Ohio Business Owner Terrorized, Shot For Being Non Union

We’ve all heard the stories of shakedowns and bullying that occurs to many non-unionized workers and private business owners. However, the thuggery might have gone beyond the pale recently when one Ohio business owner was repeatedly harassed, then shot and almost killed, for allegedly being non-union.

John King owns one of Toledo’s largest non-union electrical contracting businesses. With 25 employees and an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau, King’s business reportedly often thrives while other unionized electrical contracting businesses fail due to their higher rates.

However, King’s success may be making him a prime target for union thugs, including threats and violence.

King says he holds no animus towards the union, stating that he only ever wanted to do what he loved to do. Labor Union Report writes that after some college, King did a stint with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers before being drafted into the military. Following his service, King went solo and became the youngest independent electrical contractor in the Toledo area.

But King’s success, especially during the recession, may have come with a price, including lawsuits, harassment, slashed tires and multiple incidents of vandalism, just to name a few. LUR reports:

Unfortunately, being a non-union electrical company, King has always been on the radar of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW). In fact, in 2006, he won a significant case against the IBEW at the US Court of Appeals, after the union had improperly promised his electricians jobs on union sites if they voted the union into King’s company.

Since he’s been in business, in addition to the legal battles and verbal abuse, King’s company has been vandalized and threatened on numerous occasions.

“Back then, it was nothing to have to regularly buy a new set of tires,” King said during a telephone interview on Tuesday. “The ice pick was the weapon of choice.”

Until Wednesday, the worst of the union attacks on King and his business came in the mid-eighties during the UAW strike at AP Parts. During a lull in the lengthy strike, King’s business was picketed by more than 50 IBEW picketers. This was at a time when he only had eight or nine employees. One of his employees, whose car was trashed by the union picketers, was also reportedly assaulted by IBEW thugs.

Unfortunately, the vandalism has never stopped. This year alone, he’s had to report three incidents of damage . This doesn’t include the incidents of stalking he and his men have to go through while they’re working.

In one incident earlier this year, rocks were thrown through the front windows of his shop, one of which had the word “kill” written on it.

But last Wednesday the attacks grew more heinous when King discovered an individual on his property attempting to vandalize his SUV.  When King yelled at the man to stop, the vandal shot King, hitting him in the arm.

According to LUR, police recovered a shell casing from the scene the night of the shooting in addition to a Swiss Army knife. The knife was presumably going to be used to slash King’s tires yet again.

LUR reports that neither the police nor King are certain which union was behind the attack, but given that the word “SCAB” was scrawled on King’s vehicle, there is a good indication the incident was union-related.

King, who is offering a $10,000 reward for information that will lead to the arrest and conviction of the suspect, praised police for their thoroughness in the investigation.

We should perhaps also point out that King’s shooting comes on the heels of a controversial declaration made by the union that represents Verizon workers, when it declared “open season” on “managers and scabs.” The Blaze reported:

“The voice of a representative encourages members to deal harshly with ‘managers and scabs.’

‘It is open season. Follow them safely, but when you get to a location, torture them, torture them with chants and noise. Be so loud that they can’t concentrate and wish they never got out of bed,’ says the recorded voice. Another part of the message states:

      Wake up America, Unions are no good. They fight for the loosers who are not doing the job and costing us the citizens money. When the get a huge pay raise we end up paying for it. The business just passes it on to us. If you dont play by the union rules they harass you and threaten you. They should be investigated and charged. disband the Unions. On a happy note we voted out our union because all they did was take our money and do nothing for us. When a company gives a the union a demand they take it from some were, think about it. Mr. King move to FLorida and you will not have that problem, Florida is a right ot work state not a Union Dictator State. .

      If this had been a non-union worker attacking a union boss, you can bet it would have been all over the news.

      My dad worked for a union electrical company, they went on strike (this was in about ‘66-67) and when the strike was over, the company folded. He got a job at Proctor and Gamble, non-union, and retired after about 26 years. Every time the union vote came up, it got voted down because P&G treated their people better than any union could, and the people knew it.

      If unions are allowed to continue, (and they currently are a MENACE to society), there should be NO SUCH THING as an ALL-UNION shop. Unions should have to earn their memberships by giving value. I don’t know exactly how that could be structured, but I think unions who have a guarenteed membership of a whole shop tend to take their members for granted, and as we see now, they have an incestuous relationship with the Democrat Party, so their loyalty is with that party, NOT their membership.

      The principle behind this thought is: “Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely”. Unions should have to earn the loyalty of every member, AS AN INDIVIDUAL!!!

      I disagree UNIONS are NOT bad.. UNION LEADERS are.. I know many in UNIONS from the TEAMSTERS to SEIU some still working some retired (not until 65 like the rest of us)… They are HARD working people..MOST got their jobs NOT because they are UNION jobs but because they applied for a job and it happened to be UNION.. HALF of ALL UNION membership are CONSERVATIVES.. and still more are DEMOCRATS who are in the middle or slightly to the right.. Most like the Union for a few reasons..every job has a TOP pay.. (it’s where you work.. get raises.. and after you reach a certain pay you DON’T get anymore raises)..to many companies hire a 20 year old worker who works for the company for 30 years reaches the TOP pay.. after a few more years some CEO decides to FIRE that NOW 50+ year old making TOP pay and replace them with a 20 year old making starting pay thus saving the company money.. and lets face it EVERYONE moves much FASTER at 20 than 50.. the unions and contracts with the employers STOP that..       Guess I still remember reading about unions burning down buildings because they were being built by non-union companies. This was a long time ago, but it made a definite impression on me and I made it a point to never be involved with Unions. They are bad news always. Thank the Lord I never had to rely on unions for a job. The teachers unions are creating a dummy-down children by allowing bad teachers to keep their jobs. Enough is enough. Some of these teachers don’t teach, just sit it out in another room for years until their retirement (all with pay) and this is GOOD?????

    I work for the Postal Service and have seen the mess that unions make of a company. Unions demand better pay when the company is making good money. Okay… that sounds fair, enough. Now that the USPS is 15 Billion in debt, the unions won’t give an inch. I work 30 hrs a week, bring in $58,500 a year, get 19 annual days, 13 sick days, 11 paid holidays, and our unions think we should get a bail out from the gov. just like GM. It makes me sick.

      Kasich is working on dismantling the unions. It’s not an easy, fast or straightforward process, and it has to be done carefully or things can backfire in a hurry.

      Sadly that is exactly what I was thinking. The administrations response…Investigate the victim. Make that JERK pay for working hard, starting a business, employing people, give good benefits including retirement plans,

      Obviously this guy is a criminal he’s honest hardworking and decent. Up is down, right is wrong, the left is right….This story actually hurts me heart! Not because its an isolated one time incident but because the story is all too familiar. As is the predictable response from the lying left.

    The Obama brownshirts are at workin America. Being rejected by more businesses and government agencies, the brownshirts are left with no barganing chips beyond criminal activities, terrorism and mafia type shakedowns. There hopes rest with the White House Kemlin and their leader, commrad Obama.

    No employee is due more than an agreed to hourly wage or salary. They have no right to free healthcare, retirement, a percentage of profits or profit sharing, period. If expect more, then do what every other person does, that wants a better life. Start a business, take the risks and if you are lucky, you’ll make more than just wages.

    Unions and their membership are nothing more than leaches, looking for a free ride and damn the survivibility of the employers that provides the job.

    Seems pretty clear to me: find & charge the thugs under the RICO act as this was definitely organized crime.

    Offer a reward for ID leading to convicion these thugs eat their own for money; they have no principles.

    Bring civil suit against the IBEW in a court where it is much easier to prove a pattern of harassment, organized vandalism, and intimidation.

    Open a not for profit advocacy group to fund the law suit & support the right to work & I know there will be enough individual citizens w/ an actual work ethic to support him – the union mob will go down in this criminal endeavor.

      I’d happily hire the lowest bid w/ the best track record regardless of union or non-union (a BIG believer in free market & all) but 99.9% of the time that will just happen to be non-union.

    I worked the Democrat Convention back in 1996, in Chicago. The major networks gathered behind a barbed wired fence to avoid having to obey the Union’s rules. Non union employees were allowed to come and go as long as they did no work outside of the fence. The DNC protected the network employees with a fence and the Unions said nothing. Don’t expect any Democrat from voicing opposition to this kind of behavior. They are in this together.

      I have boycotted union products for 2 years now. When doing business with a new company, the first questions I ask is if they are a union shop, if they say yes, I say thank you and inform them I do not do business with union shops. If everyone did that, we, the people, could bust the unions.

    the day for Unions was back in history…before our labor laws….they are a constant reminder of everything that is wrong with the WORLD…somehow the unions became more about political power and less about the worker..and now, the worker cannot leave a union job because of things like this….GET RID OF UNIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      What we’ve seen in Egypt and other Arab countries has started with labor union strikes. The same is true in Europe.

      Who do you think will start the violence here? It’s bad enough the Tea Partiers have to protect the country from the government, why do we have to fight the Communists, too?
