College Threatens to Cancel 9/11 Tribute Unless Flags From Other Countries Are Included

An Ohio college reportedly threatened to cancel a Sept. 11 American flag memorial unless student organizers included flags from other countries that suffered losses in the attacks as well.
Sarah Snow, president of the Marietta College Republicans, told Human Events her organization planned to observe the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks by putting up 2,977 small flags on the school’s grounds, one to commemorate each person who died.
After receiving initial permission from the college to hold the memorial, Snow, a junior, said she received a second email saying the vigil would not be allowed unless it also included flags from the other countries too.
In a post on the Young America’s Foundation website, an organization for conservative students, Snow said her “jaw dropped” when she read the email.
“Why should we place the extra flags anyways? It was an attack on AMERICANS, AMERICAN ideals, AMERICAN capitalism, defense, and freedom,” she wrote. “The World Trade Center wasn’t hit because a Chinese accountant was working that morning; it was hit because American capitalists were there.”
When she went into complain to the student life office, Snow said she was told: “We have a global outlook at this school and we cannot ignore the Chinese and Muslim students who also suffered losses” and “We need to look at all aspects of the event so there isn’t a negative reaction from the International Students.”
Snow said she never received any complaints from foreign students who felt left out.
“Those in Student Life were the only ones opposing the selection of American flags,” she said. “My Saudi Arabian peers were even sympathetic, telling me, ‘It’s 9/11. We understand why you want to do it.’”
The school ultimately said they would provide the additional flags themselves, one per country, and both sides agreed to the compromise of including them along with the 2,977 American ones. Snow said it was either include the other countries or not hold display at all.
But Tom Perry, executive director of college relations at Marietta, told The Blaze that the school never threatened to cancel the memorial and the flags were not mandatory.
“They were given permission to do their display,” Perry said. “We asked if they would also include flags from other countries.”
Instead, he said it was the College Republicans who considered backing out.
“Their initial response back was that they were going to decide whether they wanted to do that or not,” Perry said.
Snow dismissed Perry’s notion, telling The Blaze in a telephone interview that it was made very clear by the college administration that the College Republicans were required to incorporate other countries if they wanted to keep their event.
Perry said he couldn’t recall whether a similar 2,977-flag memorial has been held at Marietta in the past.
An official Marietta College release lists the College Republicans’ memorial among other events planned to commemorate the anniversary.
The flags will be placed at 5 a.m. and remain up throughout the day, culminating in a candlelight vigil in the evening.
“I’m appreciative that the decision was overturned, and we now get to host this event,” Snow wrote in the YAF post. “But, it should have never been an issue to begin with.”
Two other events in the next week at Marietta will focus on the Muslim-American experience in a post-9/11 world: On Tuesday, a group “will discuss freedom of speech and how Muslims in the U.S. see/experience freedom of speech.” On Wednesday, the college will host a public speaking session “on the misconception of the Arab-Muslim culture in the western world, and the stereotypes Muslims experience in the U.S.”
Snow said although the school itself is fairly liberal, the surrounding community tends to be more conservative. She said she’s been flooded with supportive calls from local churches, 9-12 groups and Marietta alumni.
“I just wanted to honor the people who died. I never wanted this to be political,” she said.

To those students and faculty who are against this policy may I suggest a walkout in protest? Show up on 9/11 with lots and lots of American flags and on 9/12 no one show up for class! Also I would like to know who is directly responsible for this. As I always suggest get out of the debate and anger over something like this and go after the root cause. Posted on September 9, 2011 at 4:53pmPutting up a flag for each civilian murdered on September 11th is kind of drawing focus away from the country and onto the individual in the event. Because of this I can see the university’s response of having to include flags of all those effected.
If I was killed in a terrorist attack in Italy I wouldn’t want my death marked with an Italian flag, I would hope they would take the time to place my native flag in remembrance.

True…but irrelevant. There should only be one flag, a very large American one. It should be suspended flat, approx 10 ft. above ground, so people could walk under it. In the middle, should be a plaque that reads:
As YOU are under this flag, so too were all who died on 9/11. They did so enjoying the freedoms it represents and the responsibilities it requires, in the land of and for the people it represents. Unfortunately, to those who do not value Life, Liberty, and the pursuits that make them possible, it represents a target. It is THEY who desecrate this symbol, and be they from afar or from within, it is they who will pay the ultimate price in the end. We the people, shall make it so. May God bless us all, Amen.

Again, slowly this time, the students where to display 2,900 flags (I am rounding the numbers). only 2,600 were Americans the rest were nationals from other nations. Should the battlefields of Europe be fly only the flag of the nation where the battle field is located? Only french flags on Normandy, Italian on Anzio? The issue was after the 2,600 to have the remaining 300 made up of the flags of the other nations (completely reasonable. They include Britian, Ireland, Austrial, China. Germany, etc. Were you to travel to China and die in a terrorist attack over there would you want a Chinese flag flying in your honor?

Posted on September 10, 2011 at 4:14pmAlso note, it was called the “WORLD TRADE CENTER,“ not the ”American Trade Center.” 372 foreign nationals that had offices and worked in that building were also killed, from dozens of other counties like Britain, Canada, Israel, China, etc., and yes, some Middle Eastern countries too. Nearly 3,000 people killed in total, over 12% of them foreigners. It’s perfectly reasonable to be sensitive to the fact that not everybody killed was American. We weren’t the only ones attacked.

If you’re going to place flags for each individual killed, it‘s rather respectful to recognize the fact that 372 of them weren’t American citizens. NON-AMERICANS WERE ALSO ATTACKED. 372 killed to be exact, plus a tremendous amount of economic damage to millions more. Those people were guests of ours, guests in our country, and our security failed them that day. For Britains were killed during 9/11 in America than during the London Bombings in 2005. I’ve been to 9/11 memorials in other countries who were also severely effected. @Steve, it takes a pathetic and utterly narrow-minded fool to say the things that you do. You don’t know how to pick battles at all, if you were smarter you’d get a lot further with your agenda of hate.

P.S. I think they have already showed who they are anyways, just by the threat of canceling.

I have two twin girls attending college here in FL. If e school they go to pulled that crap, they will refuse to go there anymore and I wouldn’t help them with a penny if they continued to go there. You ignore the FACT that a FLAG is a statement, a symbol of “NATIONAL PRIDE.”
Foreign citizens who died were in the U.S., and had the expectation of safety. The expectation that was historically based in fact.
Were there some of what muslims call “collateral damage” killed? There sure were.
But, the INTENT was…
TO KILL AMERICANS
TO ATTACK AMERICA
TO ATTACK THE SYMBOLS OF AMERICA
THAT is what the INTENT was.
The memorial is also a statement of national pride.
This is why flags are chosen.
They could have used CROSEES.
Would THAT have made you happier??
I would guess NOT.
It is also presumptuous of you or of the college to assume the deceased had national pride in their homeland. The display is being created by a certain few people – THOSE people can only speak of their OWN national pride, their own pain, their own feelings of loss. They cannot, and do not, speak on behalf of the deceased, only on their own behalf.
You would presume to FORCE them to display pride in another country!!

Sunday is OUR remembrance. A bunch of Japanese pilots and midget sub sailors died at Pearl Harbor, too, and Hawaii doesn’t display the Rising Sun on Pearl Harbor Day.

The clearer understanding is that on 9/11 everyone was “American,” all victims of terrorism.

Posted on September 9, 2011 at 3:49pmWhat you fail to understand is that 12% of the people who died that day were not Americans. If this college is going to place 2,977 flags, one for each of the people who died, then it makes sense to indicate that some of the people killed were not American.
Yes, the attack was on the USA, but more than just Americans were killed that day. Why then are you so offended when flags from their home countries are used to honor them?
