CHARDON, Ohio (The Blaze/AP) — A gunman opened fire inside a high school cafeteria at the start of the school day Monday, killing one student and wounding five others, authorities said. A suspect — believed to be a student — was arrested a short distance away.
The suspect was taken into custody near his car about half a mile from the suburban Cleveland school, said FBI agent Vicki Anderson. The condition of the victims was not immediately disclosed.
Students screamed and ran in panic through the halls when gunfire broke out around 7:30 a.m. at the 1,100-student Chardon High School.
Heather Ziska, 17, said she was in the cafeteria when she and other students heard popping noises in the hall. She said she saw a boy she recognized as a fellow student come into the cafeteria and start shooting.
She said she and several others immediately ran outside, while other friends ran into a middle school and others locked themselves in a teachers’ lounge.
“Everybody just started running,” said 17-year-old Megan Hennessy, who was in class when she heard loud noises. “Everyone was running and screaming down the hallway.”
Television news footage showed anxious parents escorting children away from a school building, and ambulances could be seen outside.
The injured students were taken to Cleveland-area hospitals, hospital spokeswomen said.

Doug Gasper, a ninth grader at Chardon High School, is hugged by his mother, Sandy, as they leave Maple Elementary School Monday, Feb. 27, 2012, in Chardon, Ohio. Students assembled at Maple Elementary School after a shooting took place at the high school. A gunman opened fire inside the high school's cafeteria at the start of the school day, wounding four students, officials said. A suspect is in custody. (AP Photo/Tony Dejak)
CNN has more:
A student at Chardon High, Evan Erasmus, told CNN affiliate WEWS that the victims may have been students at another school in nearby Auburn, Ohio, waiting for a bus to take them there.
He said the suspect may have posted a threatening message on the social networking service Twitter before the shooting.
“I think he said that he was going to bring a gun to school, and I think that everyone just blew it off like he was joking,” Erasmus said.
One student claims there may have been a second shooter who the police cannot find.
Students at the high school and a middle school had already started their day when the shooting happened, but bus runs for elementary school children were stopped. All classes in the district were canceled.
Parents of high school students were told to go to an elementary school to pick up their children.
Chardon, a city of about 5,100 people, is about 30 miles east of Cleveland.
UPDATE: FBI officials would not comment on a motive. But 15-year-old Danny Komertz, who witnessed the shooting, said the gunman was known as an outcast who had apparently been bullied.
This is a breaking story. Updates will be added.

Posted on February 27, 2012 at 2:14pmI just heard on Megan Kelly‘s show that the shooter was a student who’d been bullied.
I’m currently enrolled in college, and it‘s been a long while since I’ve been in high school so I can’t attest to what currently goes on in high schools. However, I’ve seen leftist professors so egregiously bully their students with their Marxist propaganda, that they‘d lose custody of their children if they were parents of the children they’re bullying. Youbetcha, the biggest bullies on college and university campuses are the Marxist spewing professors as shown in “Marxist Valley College” at Youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7iVmh0VCkL4
So, what is currently going on in the classrooms of high schools across America, classrooms primarily under the influence of leftist teachers?

Posted on February 27, 2012 at 12:34pmThe problem I see with that in this situation is that I am sure it happened so fast that even if there were armed teachers, they would not have had the time to get to the location of the shooting and stop it before it ended. Now, that is not saying that not having an armed teacher is better but in situations like these, I really don’t think it would have made any difference. Like you said, if they are determined, even knowing there are others armed would not stop it.I feel for all the parents with the emotion they must have been feeling after they heard the news and especially for those of the children injured and killed. May God grant them the peace and comfort they need to endure this hardship.

Posted on February 27, 2012 at 1:20pmI’m not lying and I resent your post. I grew up in Chardon and all my family and friends are from ther. There has always been a Sheriff prescence near/on the campus. Always, even back in the day. Partly because there are 3 schools near each other, the elementary, the middle, and the high school.
I‘ve just found out there actually weren’t metal detectors. That’s not a lie, that’s a mistake on my part. The active Chardon alum is talking back and forth today in our private Facebook groups. The word was that there WERE. Obviously, that wasn’t correct.
The news coming in and out of town right now is sketchy, as the cell service is crap right now- overloaded. I have a few calls out to my police and highway patrol friends/family, trying to get a better picture.

Are the kids any safer since the first time this ever happened? No. A gun is just another tool. The liberal view that guns are to evil and bad and to be feared only encourages those weirdos who feel they need a gun to be an evil badass who should be feared. A simple hour NRA class that discusses firearms, safety and what to do if a gun is found would remove a lot of the stigma that guns are “bad and evil” and therefore, only evil badasses have guns. My 2 cents.
Report Post »LittleLeadMen
Posted on February 27, 2012 at 2:11pmWith all respect, I don’t think an NRA class would have mattered to this shooter in this situation. But some moral intervention might have.
The word coming from friends/family on social media is that this child (he’s just sophomore or junior) came from a broken home, and had been living with his grandparents. He’d been friends with a lot of kids until 8th grade, when he became withdrawn and more “Goth”. There’s talk that this was also drug related, that there was a drug deal gone bad, possibly fake drugs sold/bought.
This was a planned revenge shooting. T.J. Lane, the shooter, posted a warning type image on Twitter a day ago.

Posted on February 27, 2012 at 4:06pmI am a Second Amendment believer and I think that the sentiment is laughable, giving leftist teachers a gun would only make it easier for students to kill each other. When you have ready and easy access to weapons you will work out ways to get them when others are either distracted or not around, its called stealing them from the owner.
Our town recently had an incident in court when a suspect stole the court officers hand gun and started shooting, no one was hurt but it showed that better security was needed. Arming teachers would be the las thing I would recommend. It will not solve the emotional problem that is causing these shootings, remember guns are just tools in the hands of humans.
If we can deal with the mental state of individuals without destroying their right to think that way, you have to convince them that their behavior is not helpful to them or others. Just like God’s Law embedded in the 10 Commandments, “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you”. That is the point of those Commandments to guide us in our daily lives and how we should interact with others on this planet.

MORALITY was introduced in the book of Genesis, genius. MANKIND took it and re-developed it to fit their own agenda just so they wouldn’t have to obey God. Being disobedient to God does the following:
1. Takes you out of favor with God
2. Gives you a clear path to ‘the other place’
3. Makes you a follower of IMMORALITY, which makes you a follower of Satan.
There is ONLY morals or immorals – nothing in-between, genius.

Well apparently it is complicated seeing as how “Kill” was a mistranslation of a Hebrew word for “Murder”.
Do you honestly think “Christians” and their christian children have been immune from committing murder because of a belief in an “all powerful flying spaghetti monster” or some such? I would say you’re being intellectually dishonest but that would assume you were intellectual in the first place and not just going on some mental holier-than-thou superiority trip for your endorphin release.
@I support God’s Israel!
[when you take your last breath and scream out to Jesus to save you.]
Even if I had a mild case of dementia in my old age that is unlikely to happen and a severe case of dementia would invalidate your argument which seems to be what it depends on. I do find it amusing “Christians” show such “pleasure” in the thought of people fearful for their salvation near death. However studies show atheist are far less fearful of death than theist. Sorry to burst your bubble but my concerns will be for my physical state or my families well being when I’m dying. Not on some nonexistent place you emphatically think I’m going.
When acts of violence like this happen theist blame secularism, liberals blame guns, and politicians blame Hollywood. The only thing one can ascertain from this targeted blame is just how simple minded and ignorant the general population is.

Schools are posted CPZ’s both at state and federal level, there are cameras in this school, there is a strong anti-firearms culture amongst the “elite” types up there, and the teachers follow suit. There are even metal detectors in many schools up there. And the response on the news? “Omg, they didn’t do enough to prevent gun violence!”
This is a horrible thing to have happened. It’s shocking to hear the idiocy coming out of Cleveland at 100mph. Shadow, do you have children?? I thought not, not teenagers, anyway. When you “do have” teenagers, I don‘t think you’ll want all parents to be responsible for the misadventures of their teenagers. I have a better solution. Since there’s no doubt about the guilt of the shooter, try him, convict him, execute him, surgically, and donate his vital organs, and body parts. In that way he can partially redeem himself for the one life he’s taken. We can save at least a half dozen other lives, with his body parts.

I remember leaving Chardon with a strong foundation education, as well as deep understanding and love of liberty and civics. It was really instilled in us from that school.
Just saw a facebook post from an old school friend, who said something along the lines of “WTF?“ ”When we were young and picked on, there was a sense of, “I’m going to make something of myself” and the best revenge was success, and knowing your bully was going to be pumping gas someday”. He’s right. That was the kind of work ethic and values in our town growing up.

Given the draconian view of guns on school campuses, you can’t even store one in your car to enter a school. Meaning, that even a well intentioned teacher can’t run out to his car and arm himself in situations like this. Meaning that mom or dad with a CHL cannot be armed inside and possibly thwart these attacks. Meaning that all methods of defense are banned and your only defense is to run and hide and wait to be executed by people who don’t care about magic signs or being videoed on their rampages. This is the progressive utopia, the fully gun free zone, and what has it done? It has created easily identifiable and targetable zones where hundreds or more innocent disarmed people are gathered for predators to kill at their leisure. And when they kill, as they’re doing with more frequency, what’s the response? Try and tweak the utopia into even more of a police state configuration, under some utterly mindless premise that doing even more of what doesn’t work will somehow magically work. And the price of this madness is counted in the lives of innocent children slain so that utopian-ists can perpetrate their lethal little fantasy. These are the wages, and our children are paying. Sheer bloody minded insanity!

a corelation between school shootings and liberal indoctrination. No way, get out of town. what would ever give you that idea? You are just being mean, and you must be an NRA member.
Do you mean to tell me that when we stopped teaching kids that “thou shalt no murder”, and replaced with Humanism (state sponsored religion that teaches – if it feels good, do it) that school violence would go up?
Let me help you out. Go to Google, and study the numbers of school shootings prior to 1963 (when we replaced creation with evolution). Enlighten yourself to reality.
Ooops, I just went to google and studied it myself and guess what? There are no school shootings prior to 1963, and the average home in American back then was more likely to own a firearm, more kids grew up knowing how to shoot and learned it from their fathers, and the most popular television shows were westerns, where all the characters carried guns. How can this be.
Fellow libs – Help! Help! How can we spin this, misdirect, and blame Bush, the NRA, the 2nd Amendment, honest gun owning Americans, Christians…… Someone call Pelosi and get some advice on how to inerject some lies here. Perhaps we can blame white people, that usually works.

Apparently you are not very good at conducting your own research because there were plenty of school shootings before 1963.
What was that you just said about interjecting lies?

Cool link you posted, now go back, read it, and glean some truth from it.
We have more school shootins per year now, then were listed per century in the first couple hundred years as a nation. Also take note on who actually did most of the actual trigger pulling prior to the 60s. generaly you will find it is adults that did the shooting. It is not unilt the 80s, when you see kids doing mass murders on a regular basis in our schools, and the number of murders committed by teens outside of school went sky high also.
Taken from your post -
From the late 1980s to the early 1990s the United States saw a sharp increase in gun and gun violence in the schools. According to a survey conducted by The Harvard School of Public Health[41] “15% said that they had carried a handgun on their person in the past 30 days, and 4% said that they had taken a handgun to school in the past year.” a sharp increase from just five years earlier. By 1993, the United States saw some of the most violent time is school shooting incidences.

Posted on February 27, 2012 at 11:01amI had to laugh @godfather and his typical left-winger, elitist, pseudo-intellect. He cites WIKIPEDIA as a source!!! ROTFLMAO !!
A quick perusal of the article he cites reveals that it is frequently altered, and includes many non-school-shootings, claiming they are school shootings. Like the lady walking home after school one day who was approached and shot. Or the drunks who left a bar and were in the streets shooting, and happened to be by a school where girls ran for safety. Or the boy whose brother was beaten severely, who shot the teacher and was found innocent for reasons of justifiable homicide.
Ah, the liberal mindset. Run to a crap “source” and cite it as authority.
You have proven yourself ignorant deceitful lazy and dismissive of truths, @godfather.
You have destroyed ANY CREDIBILITY you may ever have had.

also taken from your link
According to the Center to Prevent Handgun Violence, in the United States, from September 1986 to September 1990 (four year period):[33]
At least 71 people (65 students and 6 school employees) had been killed with guns at school.
201 were severely wounded by gun fire.
242 individuals were held hostage at gunpoint
Now go back, and actually count the number of shootings by students over the 20 year period of 1940-1959. If I counted correctly, there were 16 in that 20 year period.
So, there were 71 killed by students in four year period in the 80s, and sixteen killed between the 40s and 50s. I would say there was a serious rise after we got rid of those ten commandments.
What say you?

Notice that between 1900 to 1930 only two students actually did the shootings in our Public Schools. Once again, compare that to just one year in the 80s or 90s.

The fact that school shooting have occurred more often in the 1980s and 1990s doesn’t change the fact that your assertion, that no school shootings occurred prior to 1963, is absolutely false. And, if you take a look, the vast majority of shootings in the 50s were committed by students.
Do you honestly think that public schools don’t teach children that killing is wrong? Oh yeah, I bet they teach children that it’s OK as long as it feels good, never mind that it is illegal. Are you really that delusional that you think public schools don’t teach killing is wrong and that that has somehow led to more school shootings?

No way, a wikipedia article has been altered! I never thought something like that is possible. I mean, it is only a user controlled site.
No, it is not an academic source, but do you actually have anything intelligent to say disputing the information on that page or anything to back up your implication that it is false?
I simply posted it to show that RangerP is a lying sack of **** and that there were plenty of school shootings before 1963. Do you dispute that fact?

For your sake, I will restate then. Prior to 1963, school shootings where an actual student did the shooting were very, very rare. By the time we made it to the 1980s, we have more shootings per year, than we generally had in a 20 year period in the 40s and 50s. Previously, we did not have as many shootings in a 50 year period as we have now.
I stand corrected in that I originally stated there were none prior to 63 .
I still hold that once we got rid of teaching creation, school shootings, school violence, and a whole host of other problems went through the roof. You will also notice that prior to 63, we stayed at the top of the world in mathc and science. Once we dumped prayer, creation, and discipline, we fell to where we are now. Many developing (what we used to call third world nations) now outscore us in math and science.

You will also notice that some of the large public schools in big cities now have metal detectors to check for firearms as kids enter school.
In my Father in Laws day, he would get on the school bus with a single barrel shotgun. At school, the principal would keep it in his office, and after school, my father in law and the principal would hunt qual together.
back in those days, many more young boys had access to firearms than today, and you still saw very little gun violence.

Point #1: Ranger RP did not mention Obama. He did mention Pelosi.
Point #2: If some politician tries to pass anti-gun legislation they are more likely to be Democrat or Republican? Democrat!
Given point #2, using the name of a leftist Democrat in such a discussion is apropos. Doing the same with a Blue Dog Democrat would not be. But then they are a dying breed. Pelosi head faked to the right to get more Democrats elected in 2006 & then told the more conservative Democrats to shut & sit down.

Citing wikipedia in court is a bad ideal. People can’t do just a little more research?

“February 12, 1909 San Francisco, California 10-year-old Dorothy Malakanoff was shot and killed by 49-year-old Demetri Tereaschinko as she arrived at her school in San Francisco. Tereaschinko then shot himself in a failed suicide attempt. Tereaschinko was reportedly upset that Malakanoff refused to elope with him.”
Schoolhouse violence? Really? If the teacher would have been employed elsewhere, The perp would have went there.
Go through each case point by point & categorize them. Maybe the teacher should have had a gun. Maybe the answer is to take the failed suicide person & not execute him, but consign him to breaking rocks for the rest of his life. & let anyone know about it.

It was an isolated incident. Then the national news got it and went crazy with it, making it a household story. Few months later? Bowling balls off highway overpasses everywhere. Then they had to put up all those fences you now see. Now here was are today, the media cannot get enough of making these nut job killers famous. When will the media be held accountable?
