Ohio McDonald’s Encourages Employees to Vote Republican

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A handful of McDonald’s employees in northeastern Ohio received handbills in their most recent paychecks suggesting they vote for three Republican candidates.

The fast food chain’s corporate headquarters in Oak Brook, Ill., quickly condemned the action by Canton franchisee Paul Siegfried, saying it violated company policy. Allen Schulman, an attorney representing one of the employees, said Friday he had forwarded the paycheck insert to Canton’s city law director, citing an Ohio law against corporate advocacy in elections.

Ohio McDonalds Encourages Employees to Vote Republican

“It’s no surprise to anyone that Ohio is a battleground state in this election, and for a multinational corporation like McDonald’s to threaten employees like this is morally and legally wrong,” Schulman said in a statement.

Siegfried issued an apology later Friday, emphasizing the value he places on employees and their freedom of choice in the upcoming election.

“Distributing this communication was an error of judgment on my part,” Siegfried said in a statement. “Please know, it was never my intention to offend anyone. For those that I have offended, I sincerely apologize.”

The handbill with a simple McDonald’s logo at the top recommended votes for Republicans John Kasich for governor, Rob Portman for U.S. Senate, and Jim Renacci for Ohio’s 16th congressional district. A Renacci campaign flier was also included.

“If the right people are elected we will be able to continue with raises and benefits at or above our present levels,” the insert said. “If others are elected we will not.”

Shirley Rogers Reece, general manager for the company’s Ohio region, said McDonald’s had no knowledge that the handbill was being distributed.

“We wholeheartedly respect diverse views and opinions, and our employees’ right to vote,” she said in a statement. “Our position is that every employee should make his or her own choice.”

Shulman told city law director Joe Martuccio the letter was “clearly designed to intimidate, threaten and coerce a captive group of employees to vote for specific candidates at the risk of their jobs, their raises, and their benefits.”

He called it “particularly egregious that in this time of harsh economic conditions, a corporation would stoop to this level of voter intimidation.”

In her statement, Reece said that McDonald’s did not endorse any of the candidates mentioned in the handbill.

“While clearly this was poor judgment, we don’t believe it was intended to offend anyone,” Reece said.

Kasich faces Gov. Ted Strickland in Tuesday’s election. Portman is running against Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher for the open seat currently held by U.S. Sen. George Voinovich. Renacci is challenging first-term Rep. John Boccieri in one of the most closely watched congressional races in the country. Strickland, Fisher and Boccieri are all Democrats.

I don’t particularly agree with McDonalds tactic. But as long as they aren‘t forcing the employees to vote Republican then I don’t see anything wrong with it. The employees ought to know enough to figure that if the Demos win. Then their health care is probably going to go bye bye.

while not really a threat to vote republican, its basically saying “if republicans don’t win, nobody gets raises” Not that mcDonalds would actually give people raises even if republicans do win. Pretty much McDonalds wants people to serve their interest, not their employees’ interests.

Betterthantv, one of the differences between Liberals and Conservatives is that if Liberals don’t like their jobs they demand to be accommodated by their employers, if Conservatives don’t like their jobs they start their own companies. If the company cant survive & make money how can they possible stay in business to provide a job to anyone.

Jesus, you sound like you think its a crime for a business to operate in their own interestes & try to make a profit.

There are a lot of people who think that you are voting against your own self interest. If they were in a position of authority over you, and decided to “educate” you for your own good, I don’t think you would be grateful for these gentle attempts to persuade you to come around to their point of view. I think you would view it as imtimidation, and that their arrogance would infuriate you.

However since the Unions, schools and basically all government agencies will continue to do so, and the playing field will never be fair, then perhaps it is time for companies that actually create jobs do just that – explain that they would be able to grow further and in return employees will still have their jobs down the road, if they considered such and such list of people to consider…

But, hey, it’s already done, kinda like a witness a the stand that says something and the opposing lawyer says he wants it stricken from the records, fine, but the jury already heard it and they can’t un-hear (sp) it. Actually, churches should be able to do it too. As Christine O’Donnell was trying to say, separation of church and state is not in the Bill of Rights, only a prohibition of a government-sponsored religion. There’s a big difference. The pulpit was a contributing factor in the Revolutionary War, and the IRS has done a fine job of ensuring that churches don’t have that kind of patriotic influence again.

Oh wait. Unless it’s a “black” church. Jeremiah Wright gets to say whatever he wants, but since he‘s a Marxist it’s OK…

If you would allow people to discuss Politics at work, instead of worrying that somebody will complain about the content of someone’s speech, then we all could have been having these discussions BEFORE it got this far.

The manager told them, in a note with their paycheck, if they didn‘t vote Republican they wouldn’t get raises, and he told them who to vote for. That’s a violation of State and Federal law. The Ohio law states that no employer, “shall print or authorize to be print…or post or exhibit in the establishment or anywhere in or about the establishment…handbills containing any threat, notice, or information that if any particular candidate is elected or defeated, work in the establishment will cease in whole or in part, or other threats expressed or implied, intended to influence the political opinions or votes of…its employees.”

It’s easy to sit around and type at each other. EVERYONE needs to get out Tuesday and exercise our right to vote. I think it is just as much a responsibility as it is a right.

On the other hand: Why is it that the “right” is the only group that has to be tolerent of others?? It seems to me that when a conservative speaks his mind;we are villified and attacked. When the left does it it is considered free speech.

@ Matty1631 in reply to your hypocritical (in so many ways) quote “They can call us whatever they want, it will not stop us from letting the country know that there is only one political point of view that is acceptable in this great free nation, and that all others will be tried and executed as traitors.” All that in one sentence, communistic (one political point of view), free nation (totally contradicts with previous 10 words (see one political point of view) and anarchistic revolutionary calling for 2nd amendment remedies for those having free thought in this great nation of ours.
go crawl back in your closet and hide from all the “spooky” people you’re told to be afraid of each 5-6pm.

see folks i told you this would happen.

These libs have nothing better to do than troll our boards on a friday night. Unlike us teabaggers who are out living vibrant lives.

Instead of trying to debate issues, these liberal socilists are trying to make me out to be some kind if radical. Impeach-bo is just another commie trying to discredit our movement.

Come November 2nd we will send the teabaggers to washington.

Nice try Matty, or whatever you are. Tea Party advocates don’t refer to themselves as the Anderson Cooper-coined homosexual act “*********”. By the way, if I own a company, what I say as far as advocating a candidate is my business, not the government’s. My business isn‘t here to necessarily cater to everyone’s desires. If I pay someone, I certainly can’t force anyone to vote a certain way, but I can suggest. I work for a union, and they do WAY more than suggest who to vote for. Why should this business owner apologize? The unions don’t.

Matty1631, Do you really think you are fooling anyone? Seriously, go back to Media Matters or the Huff Po or whoever signs your checks (In the end its Soros) and tell them your effort is failing. Do you show up at Rallies as Billionaires For Wealthcare, or a member of Republicorp? How much do they pay you to sit in your mom’s basement and write this drivel? Did you ever think of getting a REAL job?

“Vote republican and you get more. Vote democrat and you will get less.”

Yeah, that isn‘t intimidating anything but a person’s lively hood.

i don’t know what the big deal is, UNIONS like (SEIU) call their members on the phone and tell them who they should vote for, and i don’t hear anyone complaining about them doing that.

Chicago Unions are calling Union employees and telling them who they have to vote for this year. They use to just say it at work, now they are calling personal numbers. While it was wrong for this franchisee to do this, they did do it in a nicer manner than the Chicago Unions are doing it for the Democrats.

It is illegal to tell someone how to vote BUT it is perfectly legal to take money out of their paychecks and give it to the Dems like the UNIONS do every day…

Yes, that makes sense…IN BIZZARO WORLD!!!

Why can the unions send political flyers out to their members but private business owners cannot. My husband pays (through union dues) for Democrat propaganda to be sent to our home every election. He has no choice and no recourse. The ACLU and their lawyers never seem to be bothered by union intimidation.

Unions send out newsletters by the millions telling their people who to vote for, but that seems to be ok.

Why not? My union constantly bombards me with unwanted flyers, bumper stickers, and often quite frankly dishonest propaganda to try to get me to vote for Progressive idiots. It’s only fair that companies be allowed to express their opinions also.

Unlike Card Check, we still have a secret ballot. How can this in any way be threat because McD will never know how you voted? Besides, it was the stark truth.
