Ohio Restaurant Closes One Week After Obama Mentions it in Speech

Ohio Restaurant Closes One Week After Obama Mentions it in Speech

Chet's Restaurant (THE BLADE/LORI KING)

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio restaurant mentioned last week by President Barack Obama as an indirect beneficiary of the government’s Chrysler bailout will go out of business Sunday after a more than 70-year history.

Co-owner Richard Lawrence of New Chet’s Restaurant in Toledo says business has fallen victim to the economy and the workplace smoking ban approved by Ohio voters in 2006. He told The Blade newspaper of Toledo on Wednesday that auto industry cutbacks also hurt.

Lawrence says he used to deliver up to $300 in food per week to Chrysler Group LLC’s Jeep plant in Toledo, but now that’s down to about $100 worth.

Obama visited the plant on Friday and told workers that without them, who would eat at Chet’s or patronize other local businesses?

“And this plant indirectly supports hundreds of other jobs right here in Toledo,” President Obama said to hundreds of workers in Chrysler’s Wrangler plant. ”After all, without you, who‘d eat at Chet’s or Inky‘s or Rudy’s?”

This is known ibn Chicago as “the curse of Obama” he is so shallow he studies nothing and only reads teleprompters for his information.
Remember Joe Biden during the election telling us “I get my local information from Cathy’s Diner” proudly, only to be told “Joe, Cathy’s closed 20 years ago” Joe was surprised and then couldn’t explain from whence his “information” came and was too embarrassed to tell us he has no “information”.

It’s all about the Facist/Communist model where the government controls ALL manufacturing and distribution. WOW, that sure worked in the USSR. It worked great for Cuba. It is working great for Venezuela.

The only businesses doing well are those who cow tow to Obama. GE, with 14 BILLION dollars in profits while paying absolutely NO income tax and whose CEO was appointed to the “Jobs Creation Panel” even though GE closed a number of AMERICAN manufacturing facilities and literally exported 23,000+ jobs overseas. NBC, MSNBC and the other “News” outfits, whose “Reporters” are subservient to the far left are doing well even though less and less people actually watch their Obama worshiping drivel.

If you get down on your prayer rug and worship “The One”, your business will do well. If not, well good luck in the food stamp line.

The income taxes received from employed auto workers and employees from spin off companies will more than pay back the $14 billion in the long run. I’m sure if the auto industry imploded this “fact based” group would have blamed Obama and not Bush anyway. Gotta love a group who actually believes in the parlor games the wealthy have you play while they continue to pick the country and your pockets. Clearly according to the former speaker, it would’ve been far better for the economy if all those folks went on unemployment….

You need to research how the government defines, “profit”. If you put it on a legitimate balance sheet, the reality is a loss of billions. Chrysler ended up where it would have been with a structured bankruptcy, owned by a foreign company (Fiat). According to Bloomberg (whom I trust a little more than the Federal Gov’t), “Given such realities, Bloomberg’s survey of 21 auto analysts put the average projected price for GM at $42.85 per share a year from now. This means that, outside of miracle, taxpayers will lose anywhere from $13 to $19 billion on their principal and another $15 billion on taxes for a grand total of up to $28 to $34 billion* in losses. And that’s just for GM. Chrysler is whole different—and equally sordid—story. Even Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner acknowledged last month: “We’re going to lose money in the auto industry.”

JRook – What do you say to the secured bond holders who lost $billions. These folks may have been the only group with valid claims on company assets, and yet they received . . . NOTHING. What do you say to hundreds, maybe thousands, of suppliers who got stiffed. All for the benefit of a select special interest group. The restaurant didn’t close because of a single event on a single day; rather it was the result of a thousand scratches over a period of time. Why would anyone feel safe investing in the future where nothing is predictable, especially when politicians have inserted themselves in the role of picking business winners and losers.

@Liberalismsamentaldisorder Ok this is somewhat quantitative in nature so I’ll try and go slow here. When you make an investment, some of the payback is the original principal and some is the interest and/or capital gains depending on the type of invest. So since the auto industry would have at a minimum contracted and caused massive layoffs, income taxes would have gone down and unemployment payments would have gone up. So it would have cost the government billions. The investment in saving the companies, which assisted in modifying some legacy union costs has maintained the employment of a good portion of the workers. Yes the auto industry is paying back some of the principal, which you could regard as the money that was put in “your money”. The go forward income tax revenues from the jobs that were saved is certainly part of the larger ROI calculation along with the avoided downside costs. I think in the long run it will come out to be a positive ROI vs. a host of manufacturing jobs being lost to Japan or S. Korea. But let me hear your calculation method and result.

You completely overlook the long term costs of bailing out failed companies. They failed for a reason. giving them free money so they survive today only to fail tomorrow costs us on both ends of the equation. How many times is it now for Chrysler? Two huge ones. When’s the next one scheduled for GM? Nothings really changed there, we the people just own a huge stake in a company most people will not invest their own money in.

I find it interesting that the owner mentioned the smoking ban as a contributor to their loss of patrons & closing. I seen this happen at a lot of places here in Pittsburgh. This is a case in point. I am a smoker and quite honestly, I really enjoy going to breakfast and drinking my coffee while having a smoke. Since I can’t smoke in the restaurant anymore, I no longer go out to eat.
I don‘t understand why it wasn’t up to the owners to decide if they wanted to ban smoking or not. AS in this case, the people whining that they can’t go eat breakfast because of the smoking.. so.. they pass the ban.. Now, not enough people come to the restaurant and no NOBODY gets to have breakfast… Problem fixed !! ah….ok
I get jacked that I have to pay nearly $5 in tax on each pack of cigaretts. Let’s say I buy into the whole LIE, that the tax money goes to the health costs related to smoking, which it doesn’t. Funny how they tax the crap out of smokers for smoking, gather who knows how much revenue from this, and I wonder how much of it goes to the “evil” insurance company‘s to help cost’s and keep peoples premiums lower. This happens with all the fee’s, taxes , fines and penalty’s. They always say it goes to help costs, but instead, it ALWAYS goes to the government and they get bigger and fatter. WE still have to pay high costs associated with with whatever it is they are supposedly offsetting. Basically, they just plain search for another reason to tax us more and

The more people dependant on the government, the easier iis to control the population. The Facist model of the government controlling allo manufacturing and distribution of goods will be easier to attain.

      Hobbs57,
I hear you. As a smoker, I no longer go to restaurants, and I roll my own cigarettes, rather than risk the weird “Speed bumps” they have in the paper now. (My sister’s cigarette buying has increased two-fold since the ‘fire safe’ stoppers in the paper were introduced, because you spend half the cigarette relighting.)
I won‘t go where I’m not welcome. The last indoor restaurant I went to was empty but for one other table, and this was on a Friday night. The manager directly related the loss of customers to the smoking ban.
Another restaurant in town is booming- it has a patio setting where people can sit outdoors and smoke. It’s always crammed full on the weekends.

Instead they just do like the government does and pour more and more money into a failed and wasteful business model. I guess you’re OK with the government wasting your money. The actual numbers can be looked up, the US auto industry was selling something like a million cars a year when Obama bailed them out. They were selling all these cars and losing money doing it. Letting them fail would’ve been a far better long term solution. Those million cars were still going to be made by somebody, parts supplied by somebody, lunches bought somewhere. The “good” pieces of these companies would’ve been scooped up, the “bad” let go. The end result would’ve been a new, efficient, reborn US auto industry. Now we’re stuck with an invalid, destined to fail again as nothing has changed. The bottom line is this, while there is some pain involved with a free market, there is vastly more upside potential. Central planning breeds mediocre results at best. One companies failure is often several new companies birth. Capitalism or Socialism. That is our question.

KOOK…..I feel sorry for the 1000′s if not more Mom&Pop restaurants closed their door after antismoking laws came into effect. The first law in Ca, closed almost all of the restaurants that had been open since WW2. Not the yuppie ones but the one’s that served the working public, most of whom smoked, including me. The tree huggers and the EPA decided that a few grams of burning leaves were as dangerous as a radioactive bomb. The lawyers made a fortune. What the Gov/states won’t reveal is the taxes lost. I figured at the time that Ca lost approx 450K per day just in loss of cigarette sales. However the tree hugger and his family sitting by his fireplace in the Winter, all comfy and contented watching logs burning. I guess he doesn‘t realize that he is burning 1000’s of cigarettes and he and his tree hugger family are consuming the smoke. He‘s the same guy that burns his leaves in the yard and it’s just fine. But when his wiffe fans the air because there is a smoker 50ft down the sidewalk they bring in the ACLU because of the “infamous”, lawyer driven, “second hand smoke”, now the lawyers want to sue over third hand smoke and on and on. Our courts have been inundated with frivolous lawsuits all basically filed by the rich against the poor or the least capable of defending themselves. This has to stop……….

@ HOBBS57 and all of the others who are whining about not being able to “lite up” after a meal. A No Smoking section in a restaurant is like a No Peeing section in a pool – no matter where you are in that pool or restaurant you are going to be effected. I am allergic to cigarette smoke and quite frankly when I moved to Ohio in 2006 I was overjoyed that there was no smoking in public buildings and restaurants. Yes, I agree that it is the smokers right to smoke; however it is also my right and everyone else‘s not to endure the throat GAGGING and eye STINGING of someone else’s smoke. Just as one would not want to listen to loud talking, cursing, or children’s temper tantrums; we also want an environment of CLEAN AIR to enjoy our food. AS for the taxes ones pay for a pack of cigarettes is a luxury tax, it is there for the luxury for the right to smoke. AND someone stated that insurance companies get the tax for premiums – well I don’t know if they do or not BUT tobacco smoking lead to all kinds of terminal diseases, ie. Lung Cancer, COPD, Emphysema, etc. SO if you want to smoke in the privacy of your own home, you have the freedom and the right to do that. If I visit you in your home then I will not whine about the smoke but if you are in my home or my public space then keep you cigarettes in you pocket, your purse or rolled up in the sleeve of your tee shirt. “Do you mind if I smoke,” asks a restaurant patron. “YES, I DO”, I reply.
