Oil Surges as OPEC Unexpectedly Refuses to Increase Production

NEW YORK (AP) — Oil prices are surging above $100 per barrel after OPEC unexpectedly announced that it will keep production levels where they are.

Analysts thought the 12-member group would boost production in an effort to cool off oil prices and take some pressure off the world economy. Increased global demand combined with violent uprisings in oil-rich countries of North Africa and the Middle East forced crude prices 25 percent higher from January to April.

Benchmark crude for July delivery rose $1.25 to $100.34 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. In London, Brent crude added $1.22 at $118 per barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.

Meanwhile, retail gasoline prices dropped another 1.3 cents overnight to a new national average of $3.748 per gallon.

    We must do all to reduce the price as oil including including opening the SOR, new drilling, and reduction of private vehicle engines to 4 cylinders or less. The high price of oil is KILLING the retail, restaurant, and many other businesses that depend on disposable income. It also prevent companies from hiring. WE HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO OPEN THE STRATEGIC OIL RESERVE for its psychological effects on the market. OBAMA must do something immediately or we are screwed. (I know that he is an incompetent baboon who has no clue of what to do)

      We must produce and we must also CONSERVE our precious oil resources. We must force cars to be smaller and more efficient, and make homes more efficient. We cannot allow our oil reserves to be stupidly squandered at the expense of future generations who will have none. Oil reserves need to be made to last hundreds of years otherwise there will be no civilization in this earth.

      Good god, it does no damn good to force the poor and middle class to drive small cars. I have a rich bitch “friend” who thinks green is god, she wants laws to mandate low wattage light bulbs only, small cars, mandatory high efficiency heating/ac, force people to recycle, etc. Yet she has flown to Europe 3 times since Feb, flown across the country 2x since Feb, rented a camper drove around the grand canyon for 2 weeks since Feb, now she has rented a Camper to drive across Texas for her anniversary, she has used more energy vacationing since Feb than my family will use for the next 10 years. She, her husband, and her 3 kids live in a 8000 sq foot home, own 4 suv‘s and I’ve never seen anyone but her youngest riding with her anywhere. People like her will never save energy, it’s us poor working people that will sacrifice for no reason what so ever, we have at least 100 years worth of energy if no advancements are made at all. Advancements will be made, and even if they aren’t we have the technology to make synthetic oil from waste products from the timber industry for the equivalent for $20 a barrel. Energy cost/energy shortage/global warming are nothing but tools to make the poor poorer, the rich richer, and to make sure the middle class no longer exist.

      @Swapmy. We must require all non commercial vehicles to be 4 cylinders or less. Rich people will not be able to drive bigger cars. You will never eliminates all inequalities based on income, but oil should not be squandered necessarily if we want it to last for our children and great grandchildren.

      The rich will never go with that, it’s them that write the laws, they will allow loopholes. If we truly wanted to do something that would make a dent, they would get 18 wheelers off the roads, 70% of the fuel used for transportation in this nation is used by long haul trucking, you could cut that by 90% by putting it on rails and tugs. This would significantly cut our energy usage. If the left and their stimulus crap had been sincerer, they wouldn’t have wasted money rebuilding interstates, they would have fixed our decaying rail system. That doesn’t fit their agenda, all those union truckers are the ones that elect the liberals.

      SPR has only about 30 days worth of oil, and would have limited impact in the short term, no impact in the long term, and cost the US Taxpayers BILLIONS to refill

      No the SPR should NOT be opened, the SPR is to be reserved for a time which could come where we have no oil and the MILITARY needs it.

    Boy, it sure would be great if there was at least one Governor that will stand up for their state and just start drilling. Sad, but they are all spinless dolts. I really thought , for a second, that Rick Perry was but then he blinked concerning TSA. If he was, I would have seriously looked at moving to Texas. Jindal, where I live is a RINO. He talks alot but blocks transparency in the administration, imposes fees and increases the budget every year.

    Is anybody surprised? When we let our enemies control our energy, this is what we get. We MUST drill here and do it now. I would think that by Obama blocking any drilling, at some point, couldn’t he be charged with treason? Does this not undermine our security? I’d really like an answer to this, and if it can be construed as treason, I’ll be contacting my reps to begin the legal process.       Well, you’re half-right.

      Obama does want the price of gas to increase, but he wants it done using his own devices (gas taxes, etc.), because that keeps things within his control. If the prices increase because of OPEC, the Marxist is screwed.

      It really goes to show how brain dead half the country is if Obama maintains a 47% approval rating. It defies logic.

      That‘s why it’s gonna take a REAL wake-up call ($8 gas) before many of our brain-dead citizens will have it sunk into their thick skulls.

    There is no reason OPEC should or would lower the price… $100 is the new $80….

    They will not increase until it hit $125 or more. They have no Competition in the world so why would any business voluntarily reduce their prices

    If you want cheaper gas, we must find more suppliers than OPEC and OPEC Friendly vendors

      Devaluing the currency would actually be a GOOD thing for Domestic Oil, it is BAD for imports and long term stability, but Currency Devaluation, in the short term, has no effect on internally produced and consumed products, and boosts exports.

      Just to be clear, I do not support QE1,2,3 nor do I support devaluing the currency, I just wanted to point out that the devaluing does not have to bring up oil prices, the only reason it does is because we use Foreign sources of oil, if we used Domestic Oil as a primary source QE1, and QE2 would not have had any effect on Oil Prices. IMO

      You are right, of course, on domestic products and oil. I just do not have too many hopes about our domestic oil! Even if we did get a President who was for “Drill Baby Drill” and gave out the drilling permits……..if they did not make the explorations “lawsuit” proof, we could all be dead and gone before the environmentalists’ lawsuits were resolved. Exploration is expensive enough just for the oil…when you have to spend millions on lawsuits before you even get started………

      Eliminate ethanol from corn crops.Quit burning the corn harvests, further raising the cost of food. Open up proven oil reserves ,such as Shell oil’s, oil in Prudue Bay. Fracking in many different states, oil sands, the darn, Gulf of Mexico. Shell oil’s drill ready project is approximately 100 miles east of the existing pipeline. Can you say shovel ready and jobs. This is not rocket science!! Drill now, pump now, deliver tomorrow.

      Actually we are doing wuite a bit. Checkout the BAkken Formation in the upper great plains. It is not a question of our production as much as where our production is going. We’re SELLING oil overseas. . I think that most of the oil off the North Slope is being sold to Japan, Korea, etc. Don’t you find it just a little odd that capital hill gets their boxers in abunch- only when is serves their purposes. . The DoE has been setup, bought and paid for FORTY years. To what end- -put air in your tires ande buy ande electric rollerskate. BUT, BUT don’t worry Salazar has at least quadruled the number of “inspectors” to monitor possible ecological “damage” Wiener is not the only person that has some badass problems, if it leaks out.

      Let’s face facts folks; the only way we will be able to drill for our own oil is if gas goes to $8 per gallon. This is yet another example of how progressive/liberal policies have wreaked destruction on an ever-increasing unwitting public.

      We ARE OPEC, if we would only open our resources! Between Coal, Gas, and Oil, what is under our ground would sustain us for over 100 years! Instead, lets ship off anything that would look like a recovery to the middle east… Or should I say, “redistribute.”

      If I recall, didn’t a similar situation with electricity happen in California a few years ago? They refused to build more power plants, population and demand grew, and consumers were forced to pay ridiculous prices because the electric companies had to purchase wattage out of state.

      Do everything. Drill. Gas. Nuclear. Everything.

      Obama‘s intervention in middle east countries’ revolutions is causing OPEC to fight back. His statement yesterday telling us not to “panic” gave us good insight into his state of mind.

      I hate to say it, but listen to us all. I mean really. “We should….”, “We oughtta……”, “Impeach him….”, yadda yadda yadda. We’re a bunch of old dithering fools. The powers that be must really get a chuckle out of us. We are the epitome of “don’t step over this line“ and when they do we stomp and get mad and say ”well…you better not step over THIS one”. Yet none of us that I have seen even has it in us to engage in civil disobedience. (Myself included. I’m pretty disgusted with myself, honestly.)

      We are being scanned, groped, spied upon, threatened, stolen from via taxation, stolen from via monetary policy, intimidated by increasingly violent police, our economic choices are drying up (we won’t even be able to buy certain light bulbs, have you flushed your puny toilet lately?), our 4th amendment rights are being threatened, our second amendment rights are being threatened, 10th has been gone for a while…

      Our forefathers put their lives on the line for a fraction less than what we endure. Yet, we take it in stride and our only resolve is to rant on a web site. Do you all know the Sons of Liberty? They’d be ashamed of us. Many like me swore an oath to the constitution and many like me have done nothing while it is trampled upon. I’m ashamed of myself and of my countrymen. Let’s be honest. It won’t change until we do. Until someone stands up and says “no more” and takes the consequences for doing so will we get off our couches

      Iran’s the president of OPEC this year. 

      This is just not your every day announcement about OPEC oil production. Usually the meetings end in unanimous agreement and such is said after the meetings conclude. Today’s meeting ended in deadlock and disarray. Saudi being biggest contributor is usually followed by all the other smaller countries. Iran disagrees a lot with Saudi on oil prices and most other things but loses in OPEC due to Saudi being top influence. With unrest in Yemen and Libya, Saudi was unable to get the support needed to counter Iranian push to keep oil production at pace and ended the meeting in deadlock. They’ll meet agin in 3 months. 

      Saudi Arabia was very upset and they want to increase production. Saudi will soon check Iran.

      China is behind this. They have a lot of weight with OPEC now and they are rewarding us for our weak dollar policy by hitting us where it hurts us more than any other country in the world, because of our per-capita usage and our over reliance on imported oil.

      No problem. How about we just send Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Afghanistan, UAE, etc. a couple $ billion a piece every month to cover the costs of our military support in the region. This money could be used to offset the $ 1 or so federal and state taxes per gallon of gas.

      @ ROTH: I hear ya, I just honestly don’t know what to do – I live out in the middle of the Pacific (both literally and politically, as this is a very prog state). I write my letters, I make my phone calls – unfotunately, I can’t afford to fly to DC. A lot of you can make it to DC a lot easier than I – that’s where this all needs to happen, IMHO (something sorta like 8/28 only meatier – but still clean up after yourselves;)

      What’s stopping anyone from drilling for oil? doesn’t anyone own land? oil is everywhere.. Southern Ohio has oil all over it.. start drilling and refining it… who cares what they say you can and can’t do. they aren’t our bosses. we are their bosses. grow some balls.
