Oklahoma Governor Calls For Day of Prayer to Stop Record Heatwave

A major heat wave has taken the nation by storm. As a result, officials in 17 states have issued citizen warnings and advisories. With temperatures reaching tripple digits in some areas, the extreme conditions are dangerous to say the least. Last week, in a move to end the scorching heat, Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallins asked citizens to join together in prayer. Her hope? To see God intervene to change the unbearable weather pattern.

Fallins issued a news release last week asking Oklahomans to pray for rain. She wrote:

“I encourage Oklahomans of all faiths to join me this Sunday in offering their prayers for rain. For the safety of our firefighters and our communities and the well-being of our crops and livestock, this state needs the current drought to come to an end. The power of prayer is a wonderful thing, and I would ask every Oklahoman to look to a greater power this weekend and ask for rain.”

CBS News sheds light on just how intense the weather has been:

For 47 straight days, temperatures in Oklahoma City have topped 90 degrees. There has only been one day below 100 so far this month, and it’s expected to top the century mark through at least next Friday.

This summer’s searing heat is setting new records. This month alone high temperatures have been tied or broken over 800 times.

Unfortunately, there seems to be no end in sight to the treacherous heat. Below, see FOX23.com’s 7-day forecast for Tulsa, Oklahoma:

Oklahoma Governor Calls For Day of Prayer to Stop Record Heatwave

According to CBS News, Fallins also said, “I think if we have a lot of people praying, it moves the heart of God.” In addition to issuing her call for prayer, the governor also banned outdoor burning for the western portion of the state. Extreme drought conditions led to this decision, as wildfires burden firefighters and add insult to injury.

Some, of course, are criticizing Fallins, claiming that her call breaches the line separating church and state. Others, though, believe that she’s perfectly in line in calling for statewide prayer. One Oklahoman named Holly Carroll supports Fallins’ call and sums it up as follows: “It‘s the bible belt that’s what we do, we pray.”

Now, we’ll have to wait and see if the ongoing prayers bring some relief to the region.

That’s about the only thing the Neo-Christian right will give these days, prayer, for they sure has hell aren’t giving anything else. The teachings of Christ are lost on these individuals.

These are RECORD heat waves going across most of the country. Republicans usually wait till about the dead of winter to mock global warming “hey it’s -22 degrees outside. Where’s that global warming at”. They never realize that the winters have become much colder.

Absolutely. If you don’t believe, ignore it, if you do pray. This is not the hottest summer we have had in my lifetime so we will survive it but there will be people suffering because of the heat. I pray for those who are suffering because of the heat.
So far, Mary Fallin has done a good job as governor so I support her.

Maybe somebody can help me out. You are praying to god to stop the heat wave. Isn’t it the same god you are praying to that caused the heat wave? You are asking god to stop doing what he has been doing? Why? Why did he cause the heat wave to begin with? Did you do something wrong? If so, what have you done to repent so god can throw a little rain your way? Isn’t asking god to stop what he is doing a little pretentious? There must be a reason he is frying the middle of this country. Do you think you know better than god what is best for this country? If god is killing people and crops with a heat wave he must have a reason and I wouldn’t dare question the great one. If you question god you will fry in hell, or Oklahoma, whichever is hottest.

Here in Oklahoma all the crops are done gone – burned up. I think God is punishing us for burning our grains and corn in our cars. Everyone I know has sold their cattle or in the process. round bales if you can find are all ready doubeled in price and if you have cows you have to feed hay right now. In the town I live in there is not one gas station that sells ethinol and all have signs stating that fact. So enjoy your green gas and what grains there are now because we are going to run out.

Thank you! All the hate on this comment page just beats me down…Just why does anyone that does not believe in God really care if a bunch of Okies are praying for rain. Why the hateful remarks???? My Grandma who was a Christian-Cherokee Indian said that people that are hateful and spiteful to others really are only upset in what they lack within themselves.
But…when we had the big drought of 1980…her and I ( I was 11 at the time) got up in the middle of the living room and prayed and prayed. Then we did a little bit of Indian rain dancing. It rained a week later!!!! God loves to hear his peoples voices raised up in prayer. If you don’t believe, well then I am sorry you feel that way, but please keep your ugliness to yourself. I am sure your mature enough to manage that! God Bless all of my fellow Oklahomans….especially the farmers. I hope rain soon makes to your pastures!!!!

Children die everyday being prayed over and still die, that doesnt mean that God doesnt exist and in your rebuttal it doesnt mean that he does. Liberal atheist,

Sorry, but technical Agnostics are the critical thinkers. Atheists have made their minds up on what they believe. Evolution does not prove your beliefs. What was the first event. Where did the matter come from. Did it just appear in the void of space. Christians have faith that God created the universe, Atheists have no idea, but it wasn’t God. Until you can prove your faith to me, I’ll remain the critical thinker and you can bow to the alter of tainted science and Christians can bow to God. At least they have a theory, what is yours. The Big Bang doesn‘t answer that question so don’t try. I don’t see Christains making nonbelievers pray, so why do your ilk get to tell them they can’t pray. The hypocrisy really doesn’t help your cause.

Amen and Amen. People who mock GOD are to be pitied. We are all going to stand before JESUS and every foolish thing we have ever said and done is going to be played back to us at the Great White Throne Judgment. At that time, no one will be laughing or mocking, but there will be a lot of crying and pleading, but it will be “too late”. What a sad sad day it will be for multitudes who if only they had just read their Bible, Prayed and Accepted JESUS FREE Gift, they would be in Heaven for ETERNITY, instead of Hell for ETERNITY. ETERNITY is Endless. Even before I became a believer, I would have never ever mocked GOD. JESUS is coming soon people; the signs of his coming are everywhere. The only ones who do not know this are the ones who do not know the Prophecy Books of GOD’s Holy Bible. I have studied Prophecy for many years now and have watched as Prophecy after Prophecy unfolds. I believe deep within every person’s heart there is a longing for something and that something was put there by GOD. Some are wise enough to find what that something is; Others never do, but die believing that this is it, that once they are placed in that cold dark hole, that is it. There is no truth in that. Don’t get caught this way. At least read the Bible, if you don’t understand it, talk it out with someone who does. Read commentaries. Read “Foxes Book Of Martyers”. Find out what horrible deaths JESUS 12 Deciples experienced because they refused to deny JESUS.

      Liberal Atheist,
I wanted to reply to you about your answer, that you don’t know how creation happened. None of us know the exact specifics. If you can just imagine a small particle , floating in vast space… How did it get there? I’m not asking for you to answer, just something to think about.
And in response to “does that mean a god exists, specifically your god?” . I have no doubt God exists. But specifically “my god”? I am not so arrogant as to think I have my own. God is yours, too.
I know a few atheists , very few. But they became that way after terrible tradgedy. The hurt consumed them, and they had to blame someone. So they blamed God.
I think we are tested in this life. Will we remain faithful? It is something each person must answer for themselves.

      Why do you care?

These people are living their life, and they are asking their god to help them though a tough situation.

I am not a person of faith, I think people of faith need to do less praying and more doing; however I admire those of faith for having the ability to believe in something (someone) that can not be proven to exist.

So if you are so “Liberal” why do you care what other people are doing? Many years ago liberal and tolerant were interchangable. It doesn’t appear to be that way anymore. Now liberals (Michelle Obummer) tells you cheese burgers are bad for you so they should be illegal. Is prayer going to be the next thing Liberals try to make illegal?

To quote one of your own (a Liberal) “If you don’t like my fire, then don’t come around…”

      Live and let live!

      Liberal atheist,
We believe that God gives us what we need, not always what we want. But we also believe that he sometimes gives us what we ask for whether we truly need it or not. We also know that many times we think we need what we only want. But in praying we also learn to accept the answer. So, we may pray for something we don’t need because we are afraid and think we need it. Praying for it readies us to accept to gratefully if it comes or to accept it courageously if it doesn’t, because either way we are trusting in God, which is the far more important thing.

You see, we all are going to die anyway, so why should we waste time worrying?

God makes the sun rise on the good and the evil, He sends the rain on the just and the unjust (Matthew 5:45). He doesn’t make these things happen to people but He uses these situations that people may turn to Him. He didn‘t miraculously change Pharaoh’s heart but God knew that through the events that happened Pharaoh would harden his own heart. He still had the choice to turn to God or not. Now when it comes to today we all still have the choice to turn to God and obey what He has commanded us. That means some will do good and help feed starving children and others will not. Some will be a good Christian example and others will not and they will be judged for that. As long as we are here on this earth we all have the opportunity to do good and to help others… but along with it comes the free will, people have the choice to help or not. God requires that we love our neighbors and in doing so the rest follows after (like helping them in time of need). By demanding the government do it is basically saying “I care enough for someone else to do it” instead of rolling up your sleeves and showing your neighbor that YOU care for them.

Why would you think god would cool it off for well off people? I think you may have some deep inside hate for wealthy people. My comments were right god dose what he wants we can only ask for his blessings. If you live in a desert it will be hot and you may starve. Not beacuse he dosen’t love you but because you live in a desert. If your parents don’t work then there is no food. Like I said read the Bible and stop with all the blasphemy. If you want to think your are going to be a pile of worm dirt and you have no soul to save why be good? We raise our kids to follow the teachings of the Bible we pray that they will stay on the path but that does not mean they will. We have choices and I am sad that you made the choice to go to hell. I can only hope something happens in you life that will help you see the light.

Most of you peeps will fry(from the sun)before you recognize this fact I guess. Praying instead of taking steps to help solve this problem is useless IMO.(And I pray a lot.) Do you not believe that the world was created self sustaining and that GOD can and does change things to fulfill his purpose? I agree that the world is warming, but it certainly is NOT man’s CO2 emissions! Wouldn’t worry about population control……think they see a solution for that one!! LOL!

Liberal, Events or acts that can be accomplished by man should be by man. If one were to pray for starving children it should be for the means to do so and where it’s most needed. Notice even the “godless” know it’s right to have charity and mercy it doesn’t matter if you believe in God, He is still written in you from creation. A heat wave on the other hand is an event that no man can alter. It requires the hand of God and man having faith that He will intercede. There is no staying tuned to see what God will chose to do. There is only the recognition of what we can and cannot do then acting upon what we can do and praying for what we can’t.

      Catcher,

Where did you come up with that line of b*llsh*t? Did you make it up? Give me a break, that’s pure rationalization on your part, there’s no evidence to back up what you have said.

      Posted on July 18, 2011 at 11:09am

Pure rationalization, I like that. Yes, you are correct that is the explanation of my point. I do not understand what evidence is required. If you have ever put food up to someone’s mouth or have paid for another persons meal, there is your evidence that one person can, on their own, feed another. A heat wave, “In the summer in warm climates, an area of high pressure with little or no rain or clouds, the air and ground easily heats to excess. A static high pressure area can impose a very persistent heat wave. The position of the jet stream allows air on one side to be considerably warmer than the other side. Heat waves are far more common and more severe on the warm side and at times an unusual position of the jet stream places unusual warmth in an unusual place for hot weather, and imposes a heat wave.” Now, unless you, or any other man or woman, has the power to reposition the jet stream or whip up a low pressure system then there is your evidence that man cannot change the weather. So again, what evidence are you asking for? Now that we are enlightened to the facts that a person can feed another and no man or woman can alter weather patterns we have only two options. Sit and wait for it to go away, but not before loosing peoples lives, crops, livestock & fighting wildfires or we can pray for God to help. Finally to answer all of your questions that I can, #1 – I came up with that through basic intellect. #2 – Yes, it was made up by my mind and typed by my hands.

So, if God fixes the drought, then it is a good assumption that produce will get better and more food can be grown. Atheist…you are…critical thinker, I think not.
