Olive Garden: American Flag Display Would ‘Disrupt the Dining Experience’

80-year-old Marti Warren thought she was doing a good thing a little over a month ago when she booked a local Olive Garden restaurant in Oxford, Alabama, to host a Kiwanis club awards banquet. The chapter president got a rude awakening the night of the gathering, however, when restaurant staff refused to allow her to bring an American flag inside the restaurant.
Warren, who lived through World War II and was later part of her local desegregation movement, said, “This is not my country. This is not my country I grew up with.”
The justly outraged Warren told WBRC-TV, “I was so angry. I felt like I had been slapped in the face”:
That slap came from the Oxford Olive Garden. One hour before the Golden K Kiwanis club‘s awards banquet the restaurant manager told Warren she couldn’t bring in their banner or even an American flag. “I said having known this earlier you can bet we never would have eaten here. And I said if we had time we would have gone to McDonald’s because we know they are American all the way through,” said Warren
In response, Olive Garden’s parent company, Orlando-based Darden Restaurants, said in a statement:
“Like all Americans we have nothing but the utmost respect and admiration for the American flag and everything it symbolizes. In fact, we periodically provide American flag collar pins to our employees to wear while serving our guests. We understand and appreciate the way some people have reacted to the situation in Oxford and we’re very sorry if this decision has caused them any concern. The Oxford Olive Garden does not have a private dining area. To be fair to everyone and avoid disrupting the dining experience for all other guests, they’re unable to accommodate flags or banners of any type in the dining room.”
But Warren says that’s not what the restaurant told her:
In fact she says they told her she’d be in banquet room three. And as for being in the way, they were seated in the back by the kitchen. “I resent that. I do resent that. I‘m about truthfulness and that’s not truthful,” said Warren.
While the American flag was not present during the Kiwanis club banquet, Warren urged the group to close their eyes, picture the most “beautiful” American flag and recite the pledge of allegiance.
Warren is not taking things lying down either. She has vowed to boycott Olive Garden along with all other Darden restaurants and has urged others to do the same.
“Word of mouth is powerful and if people find this out and decide not to patronage these places…it will hurt them in their pocket,” said Warren.
It is probably worth noting that just last month, Darden Restaurants agreed to partner with Michelle Obama’s “Partnership for a Healthier America” by cutting the calorie and sodium levels of menu items by 10 percent within the next five years and 20 percent within the next 10 years.
ABC 33/40 brings us the report and an interview with Warren:

Posted on October 13, 2011 at 8:52amI am not sure this is a story about patriotism or not. Just because a business hands out American flag pins occasionally is NOT enough to placate me either. I have never been to this Olive Garden in Oxford Alabama and can’t say what the conditions were for this group either. Too little information for me to make a decision! Boycott if you want but seems to me YOU are not looking at all the facts! Glenn I am gonna have to do more research on this……

Posted on October 13, 2011 at 9:31amOlive Garden is just doing the bidding of its Father “Obama ibn Farrakhan.” You’re right about the food, too. Three weeks ago, I went to an OG (under silent protest) with some family members and watched while my sister-in-law had to push away a pasta dish that had a ton of moldy cherry tomatoes in it. Yuck! Best-case scenario: we soon see a sea of shuttered Olive Gardens across this country, with “For Lease” signs tacked on each one.

Other than that, the quality and quantity of the fish was WAY down and the prices were higher. THEN, I read about this?? Had I read it earlier, I would have puked up my Red Lobster meal. If this is Darden’s policy, I want them to FAIL. Because of this AND their crappy food, hopefully they will.

Posted on October 13, 2011 at 1:32pmWow … not sure why everyone here is claiming Olive Garden food is terrible but I’ve been in roughly 12 of them around the country and most had very good food (Salad, Breadsticks and Bruschetta is mostly what I order). It’s not McDonalds priced of course, but you don‘t do a buildout like they do and charge McDonald’s pricing.
On this one, if their rules are no banners or flags being displayed of any type in their stores, there is nothing wrong with that so long as they are consistent. That is not anti-American. It’s simple company policy. Not every eatery should have a giant American flag flying out front like Perkins does. Perkins does that and does it well, but it certainly should not be a requirement for all restaurants to prove their patriotism.
In today’s crazy political climate, perhaps there should be some sort of “I support the U.S. Constitution and our Constitutional Republic” statement at businesses, but that is going to harm them as well financially. Most businesses want to remain just selling their widgets instead of making political statements and I believe that’s how it should be. The owners and individuals should be the ones to make political statements.

Posted on October 14, 2011 at 10:58amI had family members among the first waves of Marines who landed on Iwo Jima. When the American Flag was raised on Mount Suribachi all who were fighting to secure the island ate their rations in it‘s shadows and weren’t intimidated in the least. But, they were AMERICAN PATRIOTS. We who have fought and shed our blood under the American Flag proudly display it on special occsions.
IFsuch a policy existed banning the display of all flags and banners in the restaurant, then Mrs.Warren should have been advised before hand, giving her the opportunity to book the meeting in an AMERICAN PATRIOT FRIENDLY atmosphere. If it had been me I would have ignored the “rule”and displayed the American Flag. but, that’s me.
I must have missed something somewhere at sometime. When did it become Un-American to be an American? Personally, I’m going to boycott the OLIVE GARDEN restaurants and all others owned and operated by DARDEN RESTAURANTS. Hopefully many others will do the same. I’m 73 years old and not once in my life has the display of the American Flag made me uncomfortable.
I feel that the CEO of Darden Restaurants owes Mrs. Warren a personal apology because for the humiliation and embarrassment she and others were subjected. A notice of the banning of all flags and banners in their restaurants should be publically displayed. That way, American patriots can have the opportunity to dine elsewhere. If you’re an American Patriot, BOYCOTT OLIVE GARDEN AND ALL DARDEN RESTAUR

(Dear Mike:
We are very sorry for any misunderstanding about this issue. We do not have a policy at Olive Garden concerning bringing the American flag into our restaurants. Some members of our team were misinformed about company policy by our corporate office. As a company we take responsibility for that and we regret it. We take pride in how we communicate to our restaurants and we are correcting this so it doesn’t happen again. Like all Americans we have nothing but the utmost respect and admiration for the American flag and everything it symbolizes. In fact, we periodically provide American flag collar pins to our employees to wear while serving guests. We welcome anyone who wishes to bring the flag into our restaurants.

Posted on October 17, 2011 at 4:51pmLove the Olive Garden food, no problem there. Not sure how many people have dealt with 80 year old people, but obviously this manager didn’t do it well. Just a bad situation when a group has a meeting in the middle of the dining area. I have left restaurants when there is a noisy group there. It doesn’t sound like the flag was the real issue based on the comments from the Kiwanis group, but they used it to get media traction. Sorry to see our flag used this way. By the way, I and everyone I know who has heard about this story (all conservative, southern, republicans) believes that the restaurant was in a no win situation and tried to consider the other patrons there.

Posted on October 12, 2011 at 8:22pmYou really won’t be missing anything. Really bland food. Sounds like it’s about to get worse if Mrs. Obama gets her way.

Posted on October 12, 2011 at 8:09pmIf I boycotted everyone that caused the slightest offense I would never leave the house.
I disagree with the Darden position here, but having worked as a prep chef for 8 years for Red Lobster I can say it is an awesome company and we eat at Olive Garden and Red lobster at least twice a month if not more. I will continue to dine at both restaurants just as I shop at Walmart.

Posted on October 12, 2011 at 8:35pmYeah I didnt know about their deal with Michelle…
They are not exactly fine dining but I have no complaints. It is a step up from fast food and still reasonably priced. I prefer their mixed grill and stuffed chicken Marsala to most of their other dishes.
I did notice the bread sticks have had less garlic butter on them the last few times, I wonder if this is why. Maybe I will rethink my patronage with them…

Posted on October 12, 2011 at 9:19pmThis is Anti-American. I will no longer go there. I will go where America and the American Flag is respected. They’re prices are way too high anyway. Think they made a huge mistake and will see that in time.

Posted on October 12, 2011 at 9:28pmyea but when the eatery is in direct contact with presidents wife ,
to promote her agenda,
Why dont they advertise that…?
Kinda like Bush Sr. did with The Terminator Arnold ..about fitness.
If their proud of their relationship,
I would think they would have it on every commecial..?
Instead of somekind of black opps.
Like it was the red lobsters or olive gardens great idea…..
having healthy choices on the menu..is good for people to want to eat healthy ,
But dont kid yourself.
Our President and his Wife are “ control freaks”..
So now that we know…. “the rest of the story” …
the flag issue is no surprise.
and when PRAYER ISNT ALLOWED…TO SAY GRACE.
I WONT BE SURPRISED EITHER.
And now this company……Has just been outed..
Our country….Has drawn a line in the sand.
And we are picking sides… and they chose poorly….
And by the way…
Report Post »how do you feel about what happened to the restaurants,
that were in Wisconsin…when the UNIONS went nuts …
And started boycotting storefronts… Just trying to remain nuetral..?

Enjoy yourself, Troll. I’m sure that the guy who was intimidating voters during the 08 elections will contniue to support The New Black Panthers. The Skinheads will continue their alliances, and associations with their Skinhead friends, so make yourself happy. Ideology becomes a strong emotion. I’m sure that if David Duke was a family member, or a friend of mine, I’d still tolerate him.
This is one of the freedoms of America. Have at it.

Posted on October 16, 2011 at 6:50amAs an American you have that choice. As for myself, I served under that flag in Vietnam and I can choose to eat where I’m comfortable, also. I paid for that right and I’m going to excercise it.
