Ominous Video: Hackers Say They Will ‘Erase’ NYSE From Internet

Ever since Occupy Wall Street protests began mid-September, the hacker collective Anonymous has been posting its support for protestors and threats against those like the New York Police Department, on its YouTube channel. In its most recent post over the weekend, Anonymous threatens to “erase” the New York Stock Exchange from the Internet.

When? October 10. Watch the group’s video threat — a message to the media — of a day that will “never, ever be forgot:”

As PC Magazine reports the threat, it notes that Anonymous does not explain how it will take down NYSE from the Internet. Comments on the video, however, reveal some theories:

[...] some speculated that Anonymous was planning a Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack on the public-facing NYSE.com website, similar to DDoS attacks the group has used to take down websites in the past.

Others felt that would only be a minor setback for the NYSE and guessed that Anonymous was planning a larger attack, perhaps even an attempt to actually disable trading on the exchange.

Anonymous confirms its DDoS attack with its “Message to the People”:

Forbes writes that invasion of the NYSE system — not of nyse.com – using a DDos attack is unlikely:

The exchange’s system is designed to handle massive loads of traffic every second to accommodate trading flows, and it’s doubtful a traffic spike would be successful in knocking it offline. Stopping short of that, it’s unlikely that traders and brokers – using their terminals and trading programs – will even notice any disruption should NYSE.com go down.

Anonymous includes instruction on both of its videos for people to “JOIN THE RAID” against nyse.com on Oct. 10 at 3:30 p.m. by downloading LOIC software and joining IRC, a link that will be go live when ready.

Forbes provides a few quick stats on the nyse.com, which it claims are “underwhelming:”

The website is ranked by Alexa as the 26,155th most visited site in the world. That puts it directly ahead of macromates.com, a site advertising a text editor for programming code. The 4 sites above it? A Russian gaming site, a men’s clothing company, a Geocities-esque online entertainment site and a Netherlands-based soccer network. Not exactly esteemed company. Quantcast, another web analytics service, estimates the monthly traffic to be somewhere between 250,000 and 350,000 visitors worldwide. Google gets that many hits in about 10 minutes.

Anonymous recently exposed personal details about NYPD Deputy Inspector Anthony Bologna who was accused by a protestor of brutality. Anonymous is also recently credited for hacking into the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system and releasing information after protesters’ phones were blocked.

      some of these dopes on youtube and face book have pictures of themselves, where they are from, schools they go to etc.. should n’t be hard for law enforcement to track them down. Thisshould be reason enough to clear the crowd out of wall street. It is like alqaeda sleeping the world trade center, saying they are going to attack it on 9/11. I called my senators’ offices and requested justice from these people. If any attack happens, it will be the fault of the justice dept doing nothing.

    It’s important to see, and it may have already been mentioned here, these people are giving a warning to succeed in one of two ways. They will either win by taking down/causing chaos on the NYSE site,OR they will win by causing the use of expensive resources to prepare for an attack they may never actually intend to initiate. Either way… it is a domestic threat to the infrastructure of the nation whether libby’s like that infrastructure or not. It is an attack on a centralized financial operation which represents the Capitalism of America…. sound familiar? Last time it was buidlings. This, friends, is terrorism.

      For example, my icon is the Nazi Mutterehrenkreuz -(Mother’s Cross of Honor)- which very clearly shows a Nazi swastika coupled with the cross, which proves that the Nazis were NOT anti Christian, but these Becker-heads refuse to accept it and instead accuse me of being a Nazi sympathizer.

      @beckisnuts – Alexia only give you data on GBTV seen through the eyes of search engines, and only on data the Search Engines are sharing. The only one who’s truly got the stats on gbtv.com is GBTV.com. As Glenn promotes the show as “GBTV.COM” it only makes sense that most of his visitors actually GO TO GBTV.com and not to google.com.

      Have you considered this much about the fact they do not target Beck, yet that is, for he will make sure people know what is coming — he will tell it in their exact words being played for all to hear first hand…and not because Glenn is in alliance with those wacko terrorists, to the contrary, they do not see Glenn as a vaible threat to their agenda which is to cause chaos and damage.

      seems to me while they are CLAIMING that Beck has been on for 3 months in FACT he’s only been on a month.. so the stats would be wrong..
      HOWEVER it is highly rated and will GROW.. I am positive…Right now there are many that belong to GBTV but haven’t figured out that you can watch shows you miss.. or later if your not home when they air.. In the mean time GLENN is the inventor so to speak of INTERNET T.V… he is the FIRST .. which means he has MORE courage in trying to bring the truth to us than our government

      The media and many of the old guard guru’s are being shocked and running scared as a new and incredible dynamic is coming about; once again we see the old paradigm’s are gone for good, and new ones, like Glenn is doing, are being established.

      The facts are the facts, and GBTV is not taking off and will probably fail altogether. Alexa is widely accepted as a reputable source for web stats. Forbes even uses them as the quote above shows. People, especially in this economy, don’t want to pay a monthly fee to be bored to tears by fear mongers like Beck and the ratings statistics backs up that assertion. Even with the Mormon’s support, GBTV ratings have fallen off. Face it.

      It doesn‘t look like it’s bad news to me but what specifically are you comparing it to? Also, if you look at GlennBeck.com you see it’s rated even higher… ~6,200. Newsweek.com is around 14,000. Washington Times is ~2,400. Rush Limbaugh is at ~6,700. Howard Stern is ~22,100.

      Regardless… what’s really going to decide if GBTV is successfull or not is how many people are willing to subscribe. At $5/month (the lowest subscription rate) if he can get 100,000 subsribers that’s 5,000,000 per year. I don‘t know much about running such a business but I believe he’s well over that number of subscribers and it seems that such an endeavor could be run on that budget…. and I’m not even counting advertising income here.

I will actually smile as I know that those of you who sought this mess arfe the ones who indeed are suffering the most. And when you come begging for food or help, I will have nothing for you.       Indeed, this is most likely an origination within the administration, or a allied band hired by them for the purpose of causing chaos.

      Most people forget this about the main motives of any terrorist or anarchist group:

      a. Attentionn to their cause — we are here, we can do this, we have done thus, and will continue until our goals are met.

      b. Undermind security of a interest — bring down trust in banks or wall street and facebook; even if there is nothing that actually happens, the fact they make the claim will cause some people to now doubt anything that happens could be the manipulation of this group…even if it is not.

      c. Force changes in society — big or small, society will change even after a viable threat is made, and irregardless of it happening, being attempted, or is a fabrication. They want to cause our society to change for the worse, to cause our comfort zone to change so radically we will fundamentally change our own nation to the worse (beyone what Obama is doing).

      d. Gain credibility on the international stage — to play with the big boys and stake a claim to the world of international terrorism. Note though, this stage is where they dance with the Dragons of the national governments, who as Assange of wikileaks found out, bite hard and viciously.

      @FatSoMann — anyone consider this much, with the new features of Facebook coming online, that the Annonymous group may have used them and other such sights as twitter and the like as a carrier for their attacks? Introduce a sleeper program (I think they call it a Trojan), from multiple sights and means, until one gets in and signals its ready to go off at a specific time?

      They may even hit multiple sights in addition to the Dow Jones, or use the DJ attack for the purpose of a feint while striking in another direction at a target(S).

    Huh, here’s a scoop. FOX News put up a fake list of demands of the Occupy Wall Street protesters. The list is from the Washington Times, but they changed it as soon as they found out it was fake. FOX still has it posted as real.

    If you want to know the real demands, they can be found on the Washington Times site or through a simple search. They’re… not quite as crazy as I thought they would be.

    As for Anonymous, eh, they’re a lot of talk and little action. The most they usually do are DDOS attacks.

      Only ones that look nutty to me are the fourth and eighth. The four is the “Buffet Rule,” which is bull, and the last would effectively reverse the status of corporations as they’ve been for over 100 years by removing their “personhood.” Such an action would make it too risky for most modern businesses to exist. The others? Investigate the people who led us to the recession: check. Don’t give businesses unlimited funding to politics: check. S&E Commission is definitely ineffective right now, so fix it: check. Limit lobbyists: check. Don’t let politicians work for companies they supported with legislation: check.

      As said, most are surprisingly not crazy, especially coming from a group routinely blasted as foolish. Are they naive? No more so than the Tea Party, I’d say, though obviously on the opposite side of the political spectrum.

    I think these are people to be taken very seriously. Hyerbole? We will see on October 10th. Kind of cocky to announce the date and giving NYSE time to prepare. I imagine NYSE will bring their best and brightest to address the threat. Perhaps a trojan horse is already in place… Interesting situation. React and tie up resources and money to address the threat and they win. Don’t react and go down and they win. I don’t envy this hacker group when they get caught.

      Doubtful. Plenty of New York’s “Best and Brightest” are already “on the inside”. I guarantee you the hackers have inside men.

      Plenty of these hackers would love for the internet to be the way it was 10 years ago, when things moved free and easy and not nearly as many people were able to access it. If they can drive policy that will make it harder for the average person to access the internet, so much they better. It goes back to being purely just a hacker playground.

    Is this kind of threat to be taken seriously? Absolutly, even if others say it will only be a minor event at best, the sheer pandemonium it may cause will be immense; the administration will also have a excuse via executive fiat/order/fatwah to seize more power and the internet for the sake of “national security interests.”

    Read the Tom Clancy book, Debt of Honor, to have an idea of how it could be done in a hypothetical scenario.
