$5 a Gallon? Brace Yourselves for High Gas Prices Says Ex-Shell CEO

John Hofmeister, former president of Shell Oil, warned this week that Americans could be paying as much as $5 for a single gallon of gasoline by 2012.
“I’m predicting actually the worst outcome over the next two years which takes us to 2012 with higher gasoline price,” Hofmeister told Platt’s Energy Week television, citing increasing global demand for oil.
CNN Money reports that while the price of gas is surely on the rise, it may not be quite as bad as Hofmeister predicts:
Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst with Oil Price Information Service says Americans will see gasoline prices hit the $5 a gallon mark in the next decade, but not by 2012.
“That wolf is out there and it’s going to be at the door…I agree with him that we’ll see those numbers at some point this decade but not yet.” Kloza said.
“The demand is still sluggish enough in some of the mature economies.”
Gasoline prices have been steadily rising. Last week, gas prices crossed the $3 mark for the first time since October 2008. According to AAA figures, prices are up 4% from a month ago and 16% from the $2.585 average a year ago.
A study from the Oil Price Information Service estimates drivers will spend $305 on gasoline in December. According to the study, fuel prices are up 13.6% from last December and 76% higher from December 2008.

Posted on December 28, 2010 at 10:08pmCOL.HAWK, I do salute your complete ignorance of the world’s commodities markets and their pricing of commodities. Although, when one is an ignorant, paranoid conspiracy-theory obsessed imbecile, imagining that organizing a massive (and impossible) boycott of one “gas company” (even using that term belies your complete ignorance of the marketplace) could effect gasoline prices at the pump must make complete sense. It must be frustrating for you to have your brilliance constantly ignored or ridiculed (That was sarcasm, just like my originally calling you “sir”).

There is more than enough oil and coal to sustain the US ecnomy until another competitive source is discovered. Now when oil is $91.00 a barrel, gas is $3.00 a gallon. They will continue to raise the price of oil and then the gallon of gas. Then the price of oil will drop by so much, but the price of gas won’t drop back to the original price. Then they do it all over again. We will be lucky if it stops at $5.00 dollar a gallon gas. Until we as a nation uprise and stop these thief’s Most of it is taxes anyway. Everytime it goes up the politicians put another two to three cent tax on it. Report Post »Since I know how well Ben’s policeys will work, I’ll bet on a gallon of gas being at least $7 a gallon by 2012. Posted on December 28, 2010 at 11:17pmThe answer is simple Mr. twofoot trucker. We do not drill for our own oil because of the caribou, and the polar bears, and the environment, and global warming, and climate change, and global cooling, and what if we spill something, and oil slicks, and oil wells are ugly, and oil is evil, and our own oil would destroy the market for renewable energy, and it would tick off our Arab friends, and it would tick off our Chinese friends, and it would tick off our Venezuelan friends, and we would continue to use 25% of the world’s oil while we are only 4% of the world’s population, it wouldn’t be fair, and Greenpeace, and it would disrupt the new world order, and Obama does not want to. But if we just nationalize the oil companies, I’m sure all these objections would go away and we would be able to drill for our own oil.

After all it’s what the market will bare that dictates the price. The oil companies can make good money by spending less of overhead and still make more at the pump.
Saying it another way: Supply and demand. Why would the oil companies spend all that money on drilling when they can get a good price now?

Report Post »A moratorium on drilling in the East and Gulf reduces the world’s available oil supplies. This, of course, will result in an increase in the value of oil reserves. Since BP has trillions of dollars of oil reserves, who do you think benefits from this moratorium. The gain in value of BP’s reserves will be much, much greater than the cost of paying for the damages. Especially since most of those damages were distributed to Mr. Obama’s political cronies.
Perhaps the new Congress should investigate the BP oil spill to determine if the conspiracy existed. http://commonsense21c.com/

Posted on December 29, 2010 at 8:41amHuh. They‘ve always told us drilling for oil isn’t instant relief, and that it takes about 8 years from start to finish, or lease to exploration, to drilling, to testing, to suppling. The argument‘s always been used to explain why we don’t drill to ease today’s oil supply. With this kind of prediction being made, why aren’t we thinking about drilling today for 2018 relief?
Now wrap your mind around the fact that there are 57,000 orphan oil & natural gas wells in the U.S., most of which had been producing wells prior to the oil bust in 1986, and they’re ostensably ready to go back into production with minimal cost, time, or effort. How many of them could be producing and knocking down prices within a year or two?http://www.rrc.state.tx.us/commissioners/carrillo/press/energytestimony.php
8 years from now, $5 gallon of gas, and something can be done today but they’re not doing it. That means when we’re paying $5 a gallon at Christmas, 2018, we can blame Obama and do so legitimately.
