On the Trail Santorum Says Romney Is ‘The Worst Republican in the Country to Put Up Against Barack Obama’

(The Blaze/AP) — An agitated Rick Santorum on Sunday called Mitt Romney “the worst Republican in the country to put up against Barack Obama” even as it appears the former Massachusetts governor is on pace to clinch the party’s nomination in June.
Santorum later lashed out at reporters, using a profane word as he accused them of “distorting” his speech.
Santorum told voters that Romney is “uniquely disqualified” to be the GOP’s presidential pick and urged his supporters to stand with him even as he faces an increasingly improbable pathway to the nomination. Santorum said “the race isn’t over until the people of Wisconsin sing,” and urged them to give his underfunded, underdog campaign a chance to derail Romney.
“Pick any other Republican in the country. He is the worst Republican in the country to put up against Barack Obama,” Santorum said at an evening rally near Racine.
Santorum later tried to clarify that he was talking only about Romney’s ability to campaign against the national health care law championed by Obama and the Democrats. But the candidate’s temper flared when he was pushed by reporters.
“On the issue of health care. That’s what I was talking about, and I was very clear about talking about that. OK?” Santorum told reporters who asked him about the scathing criticism. “Come on, guys, don’t do this. I mean, you guys are incredible. I was talking about Obamacare, and he is the worst because he was the author of Romneycare.”
Pressed by a reporter from The New York Times, Santorum said: “Quit distorting my words. It’s bulls—.”
Romney spokesman Ryan Williams, who attended the event, said Santorum was “panicking in the final stages of his campaign.”
“Rick Santorum is becoming more desperate and angry and unhinged every day,” Williams said. “He sees conservatives coalescing around Mitt Romney and he’s rattled by the backlash caused by his suggestion that keeping Barack Obama would be better than electing a Republican.”
Campaigning throughout Wisconsin, which has its primary April 3, Santorum hammered Romney as a candidate conservatives should not trust. He seized on a Romney adviser‘s comment last week that the race’s dynamic will change when the GOP settles on a nominee, likening it to an Etch A Sketch toy.
“I have not written my public policy pronouncements on an Etch A Sketch. They are written on my heart,” Santorum said in a Fond du Lac bowling alley.
“Gov. Romney has said in response to the Etch A Sketch comment that he wants to assure all of you – he wants to assure that he will run as a conservative in the fall. Let me assure you, that I’m not going to run as a conservative. I am a conservative.”
Santorum also called Romney “the one Republican in America who actually authored the blueprint for Obamacare.”
“We have a candidate who is running against me who is uniquely disqualified,” he said.
But that candidate is better organized and has a serious advantage on his way to clinching the GOP nomination with 1,144 delegates before the party meets for its convention in Tampa, Fla. Romney has won 568 delegates to Santorum’s 273, according to The Associated Press’ tally.
Santorum would need 74 percent of the remaining delegates to clinch the nomination before the national convention in August, and he acknowledges he is unlikely to keep pace with Romney in spending.
“I can’t outspend him in Wisconsin. No way,” Santorum told supporters here. “But you can outwork him. We can do this.”
Santorum appeared on CBS’s “Face the Nation” Sunday where he discussed the primary race as well as the Trayvon Martin tragedy in Florida:

Posted on March 26, 2012 at 1:16amI’m disappointed in all this in-fighting amongst the candidates, and I’ll vote for anyone , but, Obama! I’m from Massachusetts and I resent all the hostility against Mitt Romney over RomneyCare. Mitt Romney was a Republican Governor in a Democratic state, the Democrats came up with a Healthcare plan, that basically was an entitlement program that would bankrupt the state. There was more then enough votes to override a veto by Romney. He had no choice but to try and make some changes to the plan that would save the Commonwealth money and not give away the farm. But, alas the Dems depending on the Federal Government to reinburse for MedicAid (Mass Health) recipients went crazy giving away free healthcare while the taxpayer and working stiff eneded up paying through the nose, for, healthcare while the low income and dead beats got free care. The idea was for everyone to be responsible for their own healthcare, and make employers to provide coverage, but , why would a company cover an employee when they can get coverage from the state? It’s alot cheaper to pay a fine then to pay for coverage. Just restructure hours worked per week, for coverage and dump the majority of employees not working the required hours. There is no incentive for businesses to provide healthcare.

Posted on March 26, 2012 at 3:35amFinally some common sense here, Romney wasn’t my choice, but if the elections were fair the corporate media and GOP weren’t at all efforts to kill Pauls momentum, and he lost I would have voted for the eventual nominee, but since then I have felt so irascible at points I had thought if this is how the candidate is picked I would just vote against the party that doesn’t welcome me. I know the party is far from cohesive, but I don‘t see America’s demise, the loss of individual freedom to choose, rights, privacy, economic sustainability stopping with a war in Iran I see our problems hastened I see a loss of the republic, perhaps civil war with no idea what side the evangelicals would take these people think they are god, and I can’t reach them.

Posted on March 26, 2012 at 6:34amHe is right. Romney in the worst. Health care alone makes that decision. We will not have enough people willing to go out and vote for Mitt. They will stay home. I will also vote for anyone but Obama. But you gotta think about this. The GOP doesn’t seem to care if they take the W. House. They seem to want to get the Senate and House. If is such a stupid plan on their part. Obama already has power without the house and Senate. We needed Newt and the run him under the bus. You people fell for the GOP smear on Newt, yet you want Rick to stop smearing Mitt… double standard………….most qualified was Newt. The GOP themselves have ruined this election by promising Mitt this election. He isn’t strong enough and neither is Rick………..

Posted on March 26, 2012 at 9:17amThanks for your post. I have researched this topic quite extensively and discovered this information as well. I find it odd that the MSM does not report these facts. It just goes to show you that everyone is pushing for the ABR’s to ensure 4 more years of Obama.
I also find it interesting that Fox News,MSM and the ABR’s conveniently omit the fact that the attorney general from Florida, Pam Bondi, who is leading the 26 state lawsuit against Obamacare supports Romney. I am convinced that the ABR propaganda campaign was initiated by the Obama machine to prevent a Romney GOP nomination.

Well its not just the fact that internet connectivity may be crap in their areas.. Its also the fact that people in those areas are a bit less educated- and get all starry eyed; when they see an all caps “Christian” social Conservative. Then of course you have the ones who also hate/dislike Romney, because in their silly little minds- he doesn’t fit the Christian mold; since he is a Mormon.
With some Santorum’s comments about gays, and then the fact that he seems so judgmental; and seems too willing to get too involved in people’s personal lives… He’d be torn apart in the general election.

Far more important than a Presidential election, is a religious election. Do we elect Jesus Christ to govern our hearts and minds, or do we allow a usurpation of His right to rule us? He created us. It is His right to govern. We should do well to study His word and follow His commandments. It is for this reason that we are losing our liberties wherewith we have been made free. The answer is in your comment. And the logic is simple and history has also shown that it is sound. Increase the size and power of the American Military, so that no one dares provoke. Peace through strength. Right by Might. Do you honestly think that if we were to pull back our troops from all over the world and stick them only on our own borders that our enemies would simply relax and leave us and our allies alone? Do you honestly think that we are the sole reason and cause and provocation for their ambitions and aggression? IF you do, then you simply do not get it. We could spend the next 20 years showering their countries with money and assistance, not to mention buying up their oil at whatever price they dictate, and we will still be the Great Devil, and they will still attempt to bring us to our knees through terror. There is no security or peace that we can broker until they bury their beliefs. And that won’t happen no matter how many shovels and sand they possess.
We can never let down our guard.

A Wall Street success….22 mil. Voted for the Individual Mandate. and is being promoted by news as the winner. Takes alot of money and backing to have his perpetuation placed onto the sheep. Maybe we need to understand what is being projected by the news organizations and read thru the lines. Just saying, Obama can have a field day with Romney in any debate…….

we have obamacare, foreign wars, a financial collapse, and low/middle class suspicous of every rich person. So we nominate a guy who developed the precursor to obamacare, has never had anything to do with the military (in fact, he got two deferments), supports bank bailouts, and is wealthy to boot. Those things are a goldmine for the democrats. There is so much material that democrats may never need to mention mormonism – but they will if they have to.

Posted on March 26, 2012 at 6:43amRomney’s running a campaign. I haven’t seen any really negative, dirty commercials – have you? It’s all exaggeration designed to disarm him. He‘s spending money he has and he’s pointing out the negatives in his competition, of which they have no shortage. Santorum himself has run a horribly negative campaign, and now the buffoon is out there waving an Etch A Sketch and trying to ride it to victory. He‘s not spending as much money because he doesn’t have it. Both Santorum and Gingrich are embarrassing whiners and believe they’re above reproach and too good to criticize. They’re not, and I hope Romney keeps on pointing out how bad both would be for this country. He’ll go after Obama the same way.

Posted on March 26, 2012 at 6:56amI need to stress this point: I keep hearing Romney is running a negative campaign – scorched earth as you and others have pointed out. Where? Where is the evidence? I haven’t seen it. Where are these terrible commercials? Where are these terrible speeches? I haven’t seen any of it. Wouldn’t these awful things be on the internet, on TV? Wouldn’t the Blaze post them – they’ve been in the tank for Santorum. They haven‘t posted them because there isn’t anything to show.
The only negativity I hear comes from Rick Santorum’s big, ugly, self-righteous, whiny mouth. He’s a twisted, obnoxious buffoon with the thin skin of a school girl at a beauty pageant.

I know we disagree on some things but I think We Agree on others.
Rick Santorum being one. While I don‘t think He’s a bad Person
I think He would make a very bad President. Furthermore I think He’s
To Weak a Canditate an I think would lose to Obama in Nov.
What I disagree with you is Mitt Romney not going Negative.
Mitt Romney spent 17 million dollars on negative ads in Florida.
to take down Newt Gingrich an it worked.
Problem with that is it gave Rick Santorum a chance to Surge.
Going into Super Tuesday. Mitt created the Santorum Surge now
He can’t seem to get rid of it.
Rick Santorum will not be the Rebublican Nominee He can’t get the
Numbers he needs Almost Mathematically impossible.
But he will stay in as a Personal Vendetta same for Newt
in fact Newt said He Win but he will try to keep Mitt from getting
the Nomination.
I don‘t blame Mitt personally for this but his Supper PAC’s.
Mitt created this monster now he’s going to have to deal with it.
This is exactly the reason for Ronald Reagan’s 11th Commandment.

Again, I ask, where are those mysterious negative ads I keep hearing about? My state has already had our primary and I saw a few mild commercials but nothing harsher than anything I’ve seen in the past – tame stuff really. I keep hearing phrases like carpet-bombing and scorched earth, but those appear to be just empty words spoken by Santorum, Gingrich and their supporters, but I‘m hearing nothing from independent sources and I’m definitely not seeing any proof. Are Santorum and Gingrich running for homecoming queen at a catholic high school? If there really were these horrible, negative commercials, where are they?

I see we agree sometimes. You mention that Romney allegedly spent $17 million on negative ads in Florida to defeat Gingrich. I live in Florida and I did see some ads, from Romney and Gingrich, and I didn’t find them particularly negative – certainly nothing worse than I’ve been seeing since I was five years old. These are supposed to be grown up men – they need to act like it. They’re not running for homecoming queen at a catholic high school, they’re running for president. And if they’re not man enough to get through the primaries without whining and crying constantly, then they‘re not man enough to go up against Obama and Satan’s Democrat Party in the fall.
With regard to negative campaigning though, I think Santorum is without a doubt one of the worst I’ve seen. Some of the things he has said are beyond the pale. And, do you know who has come up with the absolute most negative, vicious commercials? Ron Paul. I like Paul, but he has put out some brutal commercials. It was Paul who put out the commercial that hurt Gingrich in Iowa.

Posted on March 25, 2012 at 10:02pmSantorum, Gingrich, and Romney are all fake conservatives. They are all dishonest in that their rhetoric contradicts their actions throughout the history of their public lives. None of these three is deserving of the presidency. Barack Obama must be sent packing if this republic is to be salvaged, but more dishonest “say anything to win” politicians are not the answer.
Even people who don’t support Ron Paul have to admit that he is honest. His words and actions have been consistent since he entered public life 30 years ago. He doesn’t blow sunshine up your a** and tell you everything you want to hear, but he ALWAYS tells the truth.
Some so-called “conservatives” claim to like Paul “except for his foreign policy”. These same gullible people believe the war rhetoric that is fed to them by the government and the complicit media, but there are many informed experts who contradict the alleged threat to America by Iran (or anybody else in the world for that matter). Good information is available here…..
