Once Again Rachel Maddow‘s Claims Ruled ’False’

Earlier this month, PolitiFact — the fact-check website run by the St. Petersburgh Times — deemed claims Rachel Maddow made about Fox News “false.” Well, it seems Maddow is at again, and this time, PolitiFact is crying foul over bold claims made about Wisconsin’s budget numbers, mainly that there is no budget deficit.
On Thursday, Maddow spent a chunk of her show advancing the popular, liberal rumor that Wisconsin is not facing a budget deficit this year, but rather a budget surplus. The governor’s recent emergency budget bill — which strips unions of much bargaining power — is then simply an “assault” on hard-working people. Maddow, and others, point to an independent report authored by Robert Lang and Wisconsin’s nonpartisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau:
Sounds damning. But it’s not.
According to the Wisconsin division of PolitiFact, Maddow didn’t read the fine print:
We re-read the fiscal bureau memo, talked to Lang, consulted reporter Jason Stein of the Journal Sentinel’s Madison Bureau, read various news accounts and examined the issue in detail.
Our conclusion: Maddow and the others are wrong.
There is, indeed, a projected deficit that required attention, and Walker and GOP lawmakers did not create it.
More on that second point in a bit.
The confusion, it appears, stems from a section in Lang’s memo that — read on its own — does project a $121 million surplus in the state’s general fund as of June 30, 2011.
But the remainder of the routine memo — consider it the fine print — outlines $258 million in unpaid bills or expected shortfalls in programs such as Medicaid services for the needy ($174 million alone), the public defender’s office and corrections. Additionally, the state owes Minnesota $58.7 million under a discontinued tax reciprocity deal.
The result, by our math and Lang’s, is the $137 million shortfall.
But what about Maddow’s other claim, the one that says that if there is a deficit, GOP tax breaks are the reason for that deficit? Again, PolitiFact says Maddow didn’t read the whole report:
Lang’s fiscal bureau report and news accounts addressed that issue as well.
The tax cuts will cost the state a projected $140 million in tax revenue — but not until the next two-year budget, from July 2011 to June 2013. The cuts are not even in effect yet, so they cannot be part of the current problem.
“With the facts unveiled,” writes Mediaite, “it will be interesting to see whether Maddow is willing to recalibrate her view.”
The more likely possibility is that she’ll just blame Glenn Beck.

@ishka4me – From what I had heard about Glenn Beck before I started listening and watching him regularly I thought he was what everybody had talked about. Well, I started listening and watching. He said, “don’t take my word for it. Do your own research”. So I did; what I found was that he wasn’t blowing smoke. The information he gave was based on fact. The predictions he makes are pretty accurate.
Now. Compare that to the likes of Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow, etc. They say things like, “there is no problem in Wisconsin”, but you look into it and find that if you look at the budget in Wisconsin, sure there is a surplus but you pull back from the tree to see the forest and you find that the surplus is dwarfed by the problems with Medicare, Medicaid, pensions, etc. and you see there is not only a problem but a huge one.

That is actually very interesting! I would love for Beck to respond to many of those. Some are notpicking, such as the heritage of the US Marine Corps. I also disagree that the Holdren statement is “pants on fire” as Holdren actually DID write those things, even if they are taken way out of context. Also the Van Jones signing of a petition…Too bad if he did not READ what he was signing…But there are some blatant accusations of Beck falsehoods there that I, for one, would like to see Beck address.

Collective bargaining of public sector jobs is nothing more than politics at its worst level. This is a good way to explain: Unions give millions and millions of dollars to help politicians get elected. They also hand-pick the companies they want awarded contracts. Union negotiator tells politician they will “support them” to be re-elected if they give wage increases and more benefits to union employees. Unlike a business owner whose bottom line in negotiating is what is good for his business, polliticians care about being re-elected, so politician agrees to unsustainable benefits and wage increases because it’s not his business (his money) that is on the line. The devastating effects of unsustainable benefits and wage increases gets kicked down the road to deal with at another time. Because unions have favorite companies that help support the union’s politicians, when open bids come forward, these companies have an unfair advantage over other companies that provide the same services. Public sector jobs should be in line with private sector jobs – it is only fair. Why should an administrator in a public sector job get more than an administrator in private business. If an employee in a public sector doesn’t like what they are being paid than go get another job.

Walker fears that Wisconsin will turn into Illinois – and rightly so. I’m a resident of Illinois and I can tell all of you that the state is toast…The state has been bankrupt for several years, however the brass and the media have been able to hide it from the gen pop via their deceptive manipulating ways. Its no longer “if” they can hide it but for how long.
Thank God Walker is saving Wisconsin…

Maddow makes me so sick to my stomach with her left wing propaganda agenda, lying and twisting at every possible moment. And i know you who know the truth feel the same. There is one problem with her and her ilk.
There are those who watch MSDNC religiously, and no other source. They allow their minds to be filled with this garbage and are heartened by it, enabling them more and more to be led by the nose to the slaughter that will be “the left wing revolution” in which most of them will fight, and die, for her words along with many othrs.
Remember, folks. These are your neighbors. These are AMERICANS. And they have been duped. Take heart in consideration of your targets when defending America and your communities A “warning shot accross the bow” can do wonders for dispersing a hate-filled, violent croud, and only take action when they are directly threatening your life or the lives of those in your charge, namely your family and neighbors.
Have mercy on those who come to you seeking redeption, but watch them closely. Assure yourself that they are genuine before securing their trust.
This will be a war beyond any we as Americans will face, and we must be careful NOT to act with a vegeful heart, but with pity and mercy upon our fellow misguided Americans.
