MOSCOW (AP) — A Russian passenger jet carrying 128 people caught fire and later exploded at a Siberian airport on Saturday, killing one person and injuring 10, officials said.
The rest of the passengers and crew were safely evacuated before the explosion in the Western Siberian oil town of Surgut.
Emergency services spokesman Vadim Grebennikov said the fire, which began in one of the engines as the plane taxied for takeoff, caused a powerful blast that destroyed the Tu-154 aircraft and spread flames across an area of 100 square meters (1,100 square feet).
The plane, which belonged to the regional Kogalymavia airline, was flying from Surgut to Moscow.
The Tu-154 has been the workhorse of the Soviet and post-Soviet civilian aviation industry, first entering service in the 1970s. But after a series of crashes involving the aging fleet raised safety concerns, flagship carrier Aeroflot withdrew all of its Tu-154s from service, with the last flight a year ago.
The midrange jet remains, however, the mainstay of smaller airlines across Russia and the former Soviet Union. It is banned from parts of Europe due to excessive engine noise.

Posted on January 1, 2011 at 9:29pmFrom what I have heard from travelers using the smaller planes on remote flights, the QA/QC are not being performed on the planes. The planes are filthy on the inside, bathrooms don’t work and the crews are just plain stupid.

Posted on January 1, 2011 at 7:11pmPerhaps this is just a freak accident but Russia in many ways is on the balls of its ass and is a society in decay. Why then did Obama feel it necessary to give them the gift of START knowing full well that Putin is a THUG? All I can come up with is that Obama is hell bent on BRINGING U.S. DOWN!

Posted on January 1, 2011 at 5:53pmThis is what happens when the manufacturers cut corners. Laziness ultimately leads to destruction as what we saw happen here. Be glad that it wasn’t as bad as it was. It could have been much worse. Let us see this as a warning and work to prevent this kind of fatal event.

Posted on January 1, 2011 at 9:33amTU-154 aircraft have been death traps for years. The engines are not adequate to cope with the weight of this Soviet beast in any slightly negative condition. The technology that built it is as flawed as the political structure. In a country that has problems flushing their toilets we should avoid this type of Soviet junk.

Posted on January 1, 2011 at 9:18amGawd, I hate those things and I only flew on one once.
Imagine this: 5×5 seating!
…and one engine just didn‘t sound right and they didn’t let that stop them!

Posted on January 1, 2011 at 9:10amThe future of American air traffic. All the airlines are cutting expenses at every corner, not to mention where maintenance is concerned. Personally, I have stopped flying for this reason and due to the government intrusion called TSA. I refuse to give up my constitutional rights to just fly on a Greyhound bus in the sky.

Posted on January 1, 2011 at 9:33amThis IS the future of U.S. aviation, maybe 10 years down the road. Fortunately, many older aircraft here in the states have been parked because their are newer, more fuel efficient models out there to be had. But yes, it‘s going to start getting worse here too if the economy doesn’t turn around, and the government continues to treat every flight like “CON-AIR”.
Report Post »Personally, I’d rather drive or take my motorcycle during good weather. And the way the fuel prices are starting to jump again due to the massive inflation taking place now, that 50mpg Harley is starting to look a lot better for summer trips! Happy New Year everyone!

If we do not stop the progressive nightmare at hand, this is what awaits all the great development we have made over the last two centuries in our land. We will win this fight, and lay the foundations of the greatest future to come for the children and grandchildren yet to come of our people.
America is the greatest!
We will Win!!!
