Online Campaign Raises $313,000 (& Counting) for Bus Monitor Abused & Threatened by Middle Schoolers

Yesterday, you first learned about Karen Huff Klein, the 68-year-old bus monitor who was assaulted, harassed and bullied incessantly by middle school students in Greece, New York. The incident — captured on video that is almost too unbearable to watch — is making waves across America. But in the wake of the tragic tale, ironically, an inspiration story is taking form, as caring individuals from across the Internet have raised more than $120,000 for Klein.

Donations continue to stream in from people across the nation who were moved and horrified by what they saw Klein endure. So far, the campaign has raised $313,489 (as of 3:05 p.m. ET) for the bus monitor. The original goal was to provide her with $5,000, enough money to send her on her dream vacation. But, as the story continues to gain national stem, it seems that the total sum is so large that she’ll be able to do much more than simply take a trip.

People Come Together to Raise Money for Bus Monitor Karen Klein

Screen shot showing the monies that came in for Klein as of 8:00 a.m. ET on Thursday morning

Klein, who was a bus driver for 20 years and who has since served as a bus monitor for the past two and a half years, will surely be astounded by the massive sum of money that is being raised for her. And considering that her yearly salary is estimated at $15,000, this is monumental.

(Related: ‘Kind of Numb’: Abused Bus Monitor Reacts to Vicious Viral Video)

The Indiegogo campaign, which was posted by a fundraiser named “Max S,” is still active and it’s ticking up quite quickly. While writing this post, the lump sum jumped from $19,700 to over $120,000 within minutes. In explaining why he commenced the campaign, Max S wrote:

As soon as I heard of Karen Huff Klein and what some condom worthy offspring have done to her, I had to create a fundraiser here for this nice lady.

Lets give Karen a vacation of a lifetime, lets show her the power of the internets and how kind and generous people can be.

Karen, you have no idea what’s coming!

The Rochester Democrat & Chronicle reports that Max’s full name is Max Sidorov and that he is a 25-year-old nutritionist from Toronto. After he saw the video on Reddit, he apparently took action.

“I saw the video and really felt for Karen,” he explained. “I have some experience with bullying from when I was young and what they were doing to her was just heartbreaking. The best thing I could think to do was start a fundraiser to send her on a vacation.”

There’s no telling how much money Max and other caring contributors will donate to the bus monitor, but the act of kindness and caring is surely evidence that horrific situations can be turned around to do good.

Yesterday, Klein spoke to local outlets in Rochester, New York, telling reporters that, while she heard the children calling her names on the bus, she originally tried to ignore them. She said she didn’t realize the extent of how terrible the abuse was until she saw the video for herself.

“It made me feel really terrible, but I will get over it. I’ve gotten over everything else,” Klein told Matt Lauer in an interview on Thursday morning’s Today show.

She also said that it took a lot of will power for her to restrain herself during the incident and that the kids “should have been taught to respect their elders.”

Currently, questions surround how the children will be punished for the incident. According to school officials, the kids will face disciplinary action in the fall. As for legal ramifications, the Democrat & Chronicle has more:

Greece police Capt. Steve Chatterton said that if criminal charges were filed, it would likely be in Family Court because the youths involved are juveniles. Chatterton said that some potentially serious charges would require that Klein had felt threatened. Klein said Wednesday that she did not feel threatened by the students.

A news conference is planned for Thursday to provide updates on the status of the investigations.

In the wake of the story going viral, Greece Police have expressed fears over the fact that someone posted the addresses of the four children being questioned in the incident online. As of Wednesday, officials said that they were concerned for the students’ safety and that they may put officers outside their homes.

This is what the Liberals don’t understand. The Conservatives ARE bleeding hearts (in the right way). When injustices are perpetrated they DO take care of the issue. I think this DOES address the issue. The children that acted stupidly will be jealous of the love that has been poured out to this woman who I dare say must be commended for her patience. It would have been a totally different incident had many of us been in her shoes.Maybe this is a “teachable moment” for these moronic mobsters. A parallel between them and OWS could easily be drawn.

This is a great example of why we need to get back to smaller government. The American people will take care of their fellow citizens. When the government plays “middle man” the citizen ultimately loses out. This is also an unfortunate example of the society in decline.

I have been a school bus driver. Kids are the cruelest people around. If I was that bus driver, we would be sitting at the side of the road, waiting…waiting….waiting, until the bus load of “kids” were under control. Bus drivers have the right to petition the school for the removal of any student, for any reason.(in MN) I have called the police at times when I couldn’t get my bus under control. The bus driver should have helped this poor woman who was only doing her job.

Now: I expect to hear something about all those kids from Greece, N.Y. and what their parents intend to do in the way of punishment. What low-lives those parents, and the children learned well from them.

We would see a huge difference in our youth and in our country if we would allow the military to take over the department of education. My 17 year old just graduated from a military academy. In 22 weeks he went from a 5th grade level to 12th grade level. Instead of arguing with me, he now says “yes sir” and does what I ask the first time I ask. His room is always clean and bed is perfectly made. He is now very health conscious and in great shape. Most importantly, he talks about his future and talks about living a life of honor. I think the military would not only improve our kids, but they’d shape up some of the sucky teachers in the public school system.

I want to add that I firmly believe it‘s the parent’s responsibility to teach their kids to respect others. My son went to military school because I tried being the “buddy dad” and it made him lazy. We shouldn’t put it all on the shoulders of the school system. However, the schools have our kids more hours of the day than we do, so it does make a difference what environment they‘re in when they’re not with us.

While I commend all who gave to this woman and glad for her fortune, it doesn’t solve the problem. I personally think that bus route should be suspended for the first month of next year. The parents of the little brats who did this should punish their children for thier dishonorable actions or face a fine. Future monitors should also be given authority over their charges, to include throwing them off the bus for a determined amount of time.
As for the Bus Monitors, I know how they came about in RI. One of my friends had been let off the bus and was heading home when he accidentally dropped something under the bus. He was killed and it destroyed his mom. Bus monitors were added the next year to make sure that didn’t happen.

apparently even theblazers have bought into the ‘victim’ mentality. If this is a job, then there are duties and responsibility. To just sit there while the kids break the rules surely is not the sign of a good bus monitor.

You are right, did she notify authorities, did she notify bus driver? At the very worst case, if she is being threatend – she should tell the bus driver to stop the bus and she calls the cops to come and take the kid(s) away. Problem solved

I think this is great. I just hope the school and more importantly the parentsDO NOT think this has anything whatso ever to do with punishishment nor restitution on their or the kids behalf. Very heavy penalties still need to be implimented against these kids and like it or not their parents who are ultimately responsible. The parents need to understand that their resposibillty does not stop at providing substance and housing for their (and I stress their) children, it also includes teaching respect.

I don’t know what a fitting punishment would be, but I do think the parents of these kids deserve to participate in some kind of restitution for the wrong done to this woman. By the way, I blame the parents AND the kids.

      the fix is simple….

Allow the bus monitor some responsibility. Let the bus monitor set the rules and any kid who acts up on the bus is not allowed to ride it for one week. Either the parent will be mad at the kid for having to drive them, or the kid will have to walk it. Both ways, the kid learns the lesson.

This was a predictable event. Without any responsibility/authority, she is a sitting duck

Dear WANT OUR COUNTRY BACK, the school you refer to is not a military school. Schooling has to start at home. You absolutely cannot exuse the parents. We can’t keep expecting institutions to instill morals into our children, that is a parents responsibility. The problem with our children IS the fact that the parents have been leaving the most important part of parenting up to the institutions/government. People have got to understand that if they are going to be parents they have to be willing to except the responsibility that goes with it.

I am the first person to say these “children” should go to adult jail for their adult action. However, a school bus monitor in NY works appox. 4 hours a day, approx. 8 months out of the year, gets all holidays off paid with extra time paid, snow days, heat days, parent conference days, teacher conference days, all paid. For this they make min. $30,000 plus a gold plated Health Care and Pension. Most are retired State Workers, double dipping.

So the article says she makes approximately $15,000 annually. Doe the Blaze have it wrong, or have you not read the article? Also, this old lady is working at 68. Is it because she has to in order to make ends meet? My father is 78 and he’s still working becuase as he put it, “.. what am I going to do, play golf and lead a sedintary lifestyle?..” My point? Lighten up francis. If you don‘t feel like stringing up those lil twerps and aren’t empathetic to this woman for the abuse you witnessed first hand then I think you need to do a little reading.

@ TOOMUCHGOVT, this woman “was a bus driver for 20 years and who has since served as a bus monitor for the past two and a half years” and “her yearly salary is estimated at $15,000″ The job is not all it is cracked up to be. In NY, you are under a huge amount of scrutiny when in charge of kids. They are protected better than a pile of gold. BTW, have you ever tried to operate an 11 ton vehicle with 60+ screening kids on it?

I am stating a fact. She referred to her purse with saying on it to the “kids” as how she lives her life. It may not be popular but it is a fact. How did they find out she makes $15k? Union Contracts control these wages. I am not putting her down. I doesn’t really matter how much she makes, nobody deserves this treatment.

I feel for this woman I’ve been in her shoes. I just don’t think money solves problems. How about some acts of kindness, like helping her clean up her yard, helping her do some chores around the house? Being a kinder person to everyone, instead of sending a check and thinking that is the end of it.

Some ask to why a 67 year old would be doing this job, some may like the idea of helping kids or like many as myself with the economy we need to work to make ends meet.
I am so glad that she is able to have a means to retire from the school district.
The drivers and monitors are expendable as they can hire more to feed into the meat grinder, it truly is sad to see this is how management feels of its workers.

I couldn’t help but wonder if the tragic and inexplicable loss of her son inspired her to be near young people, if she could help or save just one… Ironically, perhaps this is just what she, her son, and the Lord are accomplishing today…

Certainly hope the parents will be as horrified as those who have seen the video are. Where does the bus driver stand, I wonder, as this didn’t just start occuring on the day the video was shot (excuse the violent word, please). Community service at an “old folks home”, in addition to whatever punishment they receive, would hopefully benefit these young people and put ‘life’ in perspective – at least I hope that is the case.

Hope is good, but don’t hold your breath on this one. Five gets you ten, the parents of these miscreants would either not give a flying rat‘s arse about their offspring’s conduct or in some cases would congratulate their kids for ‘standing up to authority’.

I am happy for this Lady – She was taking abuse from a bunch of little brats I’m sure because she needed the job.

This is why we need to bring back public floggings – Teach these bedroom baboons a lesson in respect and humility! Give them a taste of their own medicine!

To Gonzo and all men who call themselves men

God will bless this lady. If the fund reaches millions I suspect that she will do good with the money. We all need to band together to protect this lady and other like her. We need to call on all men who have even slightest drop of chivalry in their veins.
The first order of business is to protect her from the sniveling, scheming, slime sucking pigs who call themselves lawyers. They are just drooling with schemes to get their jauntiest hands on this money. We need to establish a lawyer free zone around this lady.

I sure hope so. Does she have enough time in to receive the full healthcare benefits though?
