‘Only Hobbit Hole Company in the World’: Husband-Wife Team Make Tolkien Homesteads

Rocy Pillsbury and his wife Melissa, you might say, are avid J.R. Tolkien fans. According to Fair Companies, when they had children, they decided to build a “hobbit hole” playhouse for them with the intention of marketing it to others as well. What they found though was adults were just as interested in procuring their own Tolkien-inspired homesteads.

The pair began the company Wooden Wonders, which Fair Companies notes is licensed by Middle Earth Enterprises, to build the structures as chicken coops, sheds, playhouses and guest cottages. Wooden Wonders, Melissa says, is the “only hobbit hole company in the world.”

Melissa explains that they build both subterranean — a more expensive variety – and above-ground hobbit holes. She says their interpretation of how the hobbit homes look are an “intersection of practicality of what you can practically build and that imaginary aspect of what the mind’s eye created and applying that to what can be made into an actual structure.”

According to Fair Companies, the hobbit holes by the Maine-based builders go for about $1,000 up to $20,000 for a larger luxurious version. The chicken coops start at $999 and a 16-foot diameter, 8-foot 2-inch-tall cottage with insulation, finished flooring and windows range from $15,000 to $20,000. Their largest custom hobbit hole is about 200 square feet.

“The idea of a hobbit hole isn’t really age specific,” Melissa said. “It’s something unique and people like seeing something different in kind of a cookie-cutter world where we just see a lot of the same things repeated all the time.”

Posted on June 10, 2012 at 1:21amPretty sure the commies won’t allow this when they have full control. Too portable and independent. They will want total control. No independent ownership for you and me. Just the elites. For us it will be big concrete buildings similar to those in the ghettos, just not as nice. For the workers. For the old and cripples, they will go to centers.

Posted on June 9, 2012 at 3:18pmA 500 sq ft Hobbit Hole may make a nice weekend cottage getaway at the lake but not a home. People need space, Especially if they are cohabiting.

Posted on June 9, 2012 at 2:57amMy wife and I owned a house 7 years ago and we found it to be nothing but a money hole with a lot of work, so we sold it and bought an rv trailer and we could not be any happier. We no longer have to spend our days off working in and on our home. We from having to spend over $1500 a month to live to just over $650 a month to live. Smaller is much better. Just incase your wondering, yes the typical stereotype of being called trailer trash is still there, but, who cares. Eventually we plan to get off the grid all together. Rat race, you can have it.

Posted on June 9, 2012 at 7:07amMan, you’ve got the right idea. I worked with a contractor once who moved from job to job taking his wife and RV with him.
He was happy as can be Once his contract was up? He just attached his “home” to his fifth wheel (a big ole Dodge dullie) and moved on to the next job.
When I bug out (retire) I’m going to do the same thing. There are a lot of places across the good ole US that I want to (re)see.

Posted on June 9, 2012 at 10:17amI agree with Ruckus_Tom. I never could get with the so called American dream of purchasing a home. I have always lived in travel trailers, now in a nice motor home. I have never seen paying property/school taxes as a dream, only a nightmare. And the upkeep of a home and insurance was not something I craved either. My lot rent is only $160 a month. Electric averages about $100/mo. My most expensive home is my current very, very nice used motor home that cost me $21k.
Report Post »I used to work in the natural gas pipeline industry. Many of the pipeline crew/workers tow around travel trailers or drive motor homes between work sites. Refinery construction workers do the same thing. My invest accounts are huge as a result of all the savings.

Posted on June 9, 2012 at 8:56pmYes, a Hobbit House garden shed would go nicely in the backyard of the house of my dreams. It too has an eyebrow on the roof, beautiful custom windows and doors with hefty hinges, The round door would be a real problem, though. Grandma will just have to come around to my kitchen door. See it at Houzz.com, here’s a link: http://www.houzz.com/projects/38611/Hobbit-House
While we’re at it, here’s another little structure I just love, maybe even more than the above, a tiny rustic cabin with free-form branch railing on deck: http://www.houzz.com/projects/11711/Cozy-cabin
The Blaze has done a number of these stories on small or odd houses and I enjoy seeing them all. It reminds me of my tree house and fort building, and various small cave digging adventures as a kid. It was always “my team” against the “invader kids” in the neighborhood. We wanted our turf prominently marked and would fight to defend it against any incursions. No wonder Progressivism/Socialism seems so wrong to me today.
Glenn’s a fan of the movie “Lord of the Rings”, I know, but, hmm? Is he trying to show us the practicality and beauty of living with less for the possible day when do have less? Just a thought.

Posted on June 9, 2012 at 10:13amMESABA67, I don’t know about that. The first thing that caught my eye was the kid standing just inside the door way with his hands and fingers wrapped over the bottom of the circular door frame. The doors look cute, but it does not look safe for children. Any type of simple mishap from a slight wind to just about any other reason can close a door on young fingers. The circular design itself makes the door larger and heavier that can lead to broken bones or even worse. I do hate the nanny state telling us all how to live our lives. But, I would have installed a hydraulic closure that would close most of the sweep in a regular speed then bounce and close the last two or three inches at a super slow speed. Those closures can be locked open too. While a chicken coop is one thing, a child’s play house should be more safe.
