Beck’s OnStar Concerns Were Right — Tracking Continues Even After Cancellation

Two years ago, Media Matters mocked Glenn Beck for his “conspiracy theory” that OnStar had too much power with its ability to track cars, listen to conversations and ultimately turn the car off. Well, it looks like his concerns were accurate, as GM has just made a major announcement about the GPS system.

Here’s the video from Media Matters in 2009:

Wired now reports that even if you cancel your OnStar service, you are still being tracked:

OnStar began e-mailing customers Monday about its update to the privacy policy, which grants OnStar the right to sell that GPS-derived data in an anonymized format.

Adam Denison, a spokesman for the General Motors subsidiary, said OnStar does not currently sell customer data, but it reserves that right. He said both the new and old privacy policies allow OnStar to chronicle a vehicle’s every movement and its speed, though it’s not clear where that’s stated in the old policy.

“What’s changed [is that if] you want to cancel your OnStar service, we are going to maintain a two-way connection to your vehicle unless the customer says otherwise,” Denison said in a telephone interview.

The connection will continue, he said, to make it “easier to re-enroll” in the program, which charges plans from $19 to $29 monthly for help with navigation and emergencies.

OnStar Tracks Cars Even After Service Is Cancelled

Continuing to collect information, Denison said, makes it easier OnStar to provide information for organizations that request it:

“We hear from organizations periodically requesting our information,” he said.

He said an example of how the data might be used would be for the Michigan Department of Transportation “to get a feel for traffic usage on a specific section of freeway.” The policy also allows the data to be used for marketing purposes by OnStar and vehicle manufacturers.

Collecting location and speed data via GPS might also create a treasure trove of data that could be used in criminal and civil cases. One could also imagine an eager police chief acquiring the data to issue speeding tickets en masse.

Wired notes that blogger and forensic scientist Jonathan Zdziarski, who wrote about OnStar “spying on customers” GPS location for profit” said he was canceling his service and making sure he was fully disconnected. He wrote, “When will our congress pass legislation that stops the American people’s privacy from being raped by large data warehousing interests? Companies like OnStar, Google, Apple, and the other large abusive data warehousing companies desperately need to be investigated.”

GM has been relating auto use in it‘s computers since the 90’s. I once watched a mechanic at a dealer download info to GM from his computer. He then recited me how many people are normally in the car, how fast the car went at some time, how many hours it went over the speed limit, what radio station was listened to, how many times the seat was slid back and forth, how many panic stops, if the car was run overheated, if the car was run low on oil, it was scary. I believe it was done so that GM could dispute warrantees. Now with Onstar it is in real time eliminating the mechanic. Now is this device sophisticated enough to pick specific words out of a conversation for Gov security or a crime? Is it like the movie The Bourne Ultimatim that the CIA or such could pick just one word out of a sentence to set something in motion?

The Volt is a scam and now that GM is a wholly owned subsidiary of the UAW the cars are going to get more expensive since they need to find a way to pay for their retirement benifits that they have not funded for decades, I won‘t be surprised that the screw the workforce by dumping the retirement plan on the bankrupt Gov’t program designed to keep retirees from loosing all benefits, in that program you get only 50% of what you contracted for with the Company/Union Pension Plan.

OnStar is soon coming to a chip implanted in your hand or forehead, per REV 13. Most people will choose the hand, until news stories blame the insuing so-called crimes on non-chippers, when people realize that hands will be severed from bodies so the chip can be used to access that user’s account. THEN people will elect the forehead. You can’t tote a severed head around and scan in somwhere to get food and supplies, as you can something as concealable as a severed hand. In the new currency that is about to be imposed on us, after the dollar and the other world currencies are deliberately bankrupted, no man may buy or sell except he who has the mark, or the biometric chip that enslaves you, and the only ‘legal tender’ the world will recognize. An illusion that is the fruit of the reserve banking system. Who’s your daddy?

Is Glenn running out of stuff to frighten people over? This is really scraping the bottom of the barrel. Millions of cars have OnStar, the data collected is used for trending, traffic and pattern analysis, so what? Do most people really think that a company or government agency wants to know where and when YOU specifically go? No, and to do so legally requires a warrant, not to mention would require thousands of data analysts to track and target people specifically. Not saying don‘t pay attention to what the gov’t can do to infringe on our rights, but there’s no reason to become hysterical about it. Know what the capability is, understand how it is used, and be vigilant for abuses. No need to be so paranoid.

Satellite radio users cannot be tracked, the devices do not require 2-way communications. The satellite radio tuners that are built into car sound systems and sold as aftermarket add-ons are only receivers. Each unit has a unique ESN (Electronic Serial Number.) When you subcribe to service you have to tune the unit to a specific channel to receive an activation signal. When you’re subscription expires, a cancellation signal containing expired ESNs is broadcast on all satellite channels periodically to deactivate your radio. The deactivation signals are broadcast less frequent after 30 days due to limited bandwidth of satellite radio spectrum and number of satellite radios ever made. If you have an online satellite radio subcription on an iPod, Android, or any other network connected device, yes, tracking is possible. I hope this calms some people’s fears.

So husbands or wives can buy the “On Star data” of where their spouses were exactly and at what time to assist in proving they were cheating or lying.

Stalkers or employers can buy the data also.

between government in bed with Google (sites we visit/what we buy) and GM (where we go) and the IRS (what we earn and how), there is nothing Big Brother doesn’t know about us.

A National Sales Tax (and getting rid of the income tax) will NEVER happen because then the Sheeple won’t have to file income taxes (all that information) under force of prison to Big Brother.

I have it on three cars .. and I just got the disclaimer too… and I’m a little worried as to how they use my “personal info” as well!
We will soon be trying car accidents cases in court by black boxes and On Star.

What worries me as well are the Doctors and or someone in their office as well as personnel in labs that SELL your diagnosis your PERSONAL MEDICAL INFO to companies for profit and and even to lawyers for profit A relative of mine was recently diagnosed with lung cancer and the very week he went in for the first radiation treatment at a very well known cancer center he received an unsolicited call on an
“unlisted phone line” from an attorney asking to file a lawsuit for him? Coincidence? .. No way!

Can I prove any of it?
      No..
but I know someone “sold” my relatives medical info and diagnosis to an entity “without” permission.

Beware, it is not just onstar. Most new vehicles now come with a “black box” to help diagnose the cause of accidents. It is a small leap yo picture this data being transmitted in real time. The capability is there.,.The question is if anyone is utilizing it for any reason. I mean, what are you going to do with all this data? It is the same issue as Google recording your searches. Like it or not, this is the price we pay for the convenience of living in the digital age. The only solution I can see is to become Amish…

Agreed! I’ve been thinking a LOT about living the “Amish” way….I have actually been gearing up to get rid of the smart phone. Don’t think I need to worry about my car, it’s not a high tech vehicle, never had on star, never did. My thoughts are that the more active I get and involved I become in patriot issues (tea party type), the sooner I will need to stop all electronic communication. I need to plan for it and devise a network of people to communicate with sans cellphone-internet, etc.

More and more I am thinking about it. We have enough money to get by on if we lived frugally. If you ever go to Dollywood and ride the train up the mountain when you get to the top they have a cabin in a clearing in a small dell on top of the mountain. 10 acres or so. A stand of corn, a vegetable garden, a milk cow, some chickens, maybe a goat or two…Raise some hogs maybe…Subsistence living…I am handy enough to make most things I would need…

Anyway, it would be a hard life compared to what we have, but what a way to get back to God and family. This is what we have lost.

Either that or I buy a sailboat and float around the Caribbean…

      Crackerone,

I understand your reference but fail to see how that has anything to do with what I said?

I think in the case of the Amish it was a righteous arrest. They are driving their buggies on public roads and need to obey the regulations. If that offends their sensibilities, which I can sympathize with, then don’t use the roads. Some laws are stupid, I would not agree that this one is, but no matter, we must obey them anyway. I do not condone breaking the law. If there comes a time when I feel obligated to do so and I get caught then I will accept my punishment gracefully.

As a former GM mechanic, It was necessary at times to call onstar from the vehicle being worked on, for onstar assistance, in repairing theit system. Each time i contacted onstar through their unit, the voice on the other end was happy to tell me exactly where i was, who owned the vehicle, and the modle of the vehicle.Right then and there i knew i would never purchase a vehicle, with ANY kind of tracking device built in, and i have NEVER purchased a GM vehicle in my life, and never will.

GM has been in the back pocket of politians for many years, and mostly those on the left, its not called government motors for nothing, bail out or not….
