‘Ooooh My God’: Snake on Windshield Triggers Highway Freak Out

So what would you do if you were driving down the highway and you happened to see a snake slithering across your windshield? If you’re Rachel Fisher of Memphis, TN you’ll scream. If you’re her husband Tony, you’ll whip out a camera and record the whole thing:
The New York Daily News reports on what happened:
Rachel Fisher, 26, was at the wheel going about 65 miles an hour as the sizeable snake slid across her windshield. Her husband recorded 2 minutes and 24 seconds of the spectacle as she alternated between girly screams and nervous giggles.
“Ooooh my God. Oh my God. Oh my god,” she says, while their three children – Elizabeth, 3, Judah, 2 ½, and Rivers, 4 months – babble from the backseat of their GMC Yukon.
The family was traveling from Fisher‘s parents’ house in Cordova, a suburb east of Memphis, into the city. They had been driving for about 15 minutes, when Tony, a 29-year-old financial planner and church worship minister, noticed their unseemly visitor.
“Usually, snakes don’t freak me out that much, but I was clenching everything,” Rachel added. “It was really weird. I mean, didn’t know what the heck it was.”
The couple thinks the snake had crawled up into the engine compartment the night before and then emerged once it got too hot.
Jalopnik identifies the creepy crawler as a rat snake, not a poisonous water moccasin as Tony originally says.

Report Post »Have you thought of the possibilty that they might have been afraid to stop because that might have given the snake a chance to find a way inside? Not that it would have happened in these newer cars but I’ve seen some older ones that they could have done that. Also, while very unlikely, maybe they should have made sure that the snake wasn’t traveling with family also. Either that or they have a bigger creature than a snake in the vehicle and the snake was it‘s pet and snake was just meaning to stick it’s head out in the wind like dogs do.

Posted on August 2, 2011 at 7:43amFirst of all, the husband thought it was a Water Moccasin that is a dangerously venomous snake! Whether is was or not, whats important is the husband thought it was dangerous! At one point, if you listen, the husband says “keep going…he cant get in the car can he?“ and the wife replies ”I dont know?”. So its obvious, they were convinced it was a venomous snake, and if they pulled over, then what! Their supposed to sit there and wait to see if the snake just slithers off on its own, or take a chance that the snake will try to find a way into the car! Their not snake wranglers for goodness sake! I do feel badly for the snake, but if I was convinced it was a dangerous snake, and it was a choice between my family or the snake, the snake will loose! And for those who call them “stupid” for not knowing what kind of snake it was, 99% of the folks in this country cant identify specific snakes…GEEEZZ!

This family wanted to get on TV and they won at the cost of putting other in danager.

Posted on August 2, 2011 at 11:16amWhenever there’s a snake involved, the typical reaction is either “Water Mocassin” or “Gardener Snake” (I realize they’re called garter snakes). “It’s poisonous! Let’s kill it!” This guy looks like a Chinese ratsnake. This was an escaped pet that crept its way into the hood of the car to hunt rodents in the darkness.

Though I can see where these people might think cottonmouth, if you learn the basic signs of venomous snakes people wont freak out as much (and maybe my town could take care of its rat problem) But really- in the northern Americas you don’t really have to fear snakes. The most dangerous are the rattlers and coastal snakes and they rarely bite without you knowing about them before you get close. Ive been bitten by copperheads, pygmy rattlesnakes and a timber rattlesnake once. It really isnt as bad as you think, unless you have an allergic reaction.

Posted on August 1, 2011 at 11:08pmYou only have to look at the size and shape of its head to know its non-poisonous.
Could have been a king snake – and they eat the poisonous snakes. Even a rat snake eats bugs and vermin. Don’t kill it just because its creepy looking. The none-poisonous ones are good to have around.
I used to have quite a few copperheads on my little 1/4 acre. One good-sized king snake took care of the problem. Haven’t seen a poisonous snake in years (knock on wood) even though 1/2 of the land is covered in weeds and woods.

Most highway accidents are from people on the side of the road and rubberneckers causing accidents or people not seeing the car pulled over and plowing right into them.
