Oops: College Student Sends Mass, Unprepared E-Mail to Wall Street Trying to Get a Job

Wall Street is a tricky place. It is a tightly wound, high-stakes industry that faithfully abides by its professional (and oftentimes unspoken) “do’s“ and ”dont’s.”
For example, during a Wall Street job interview, an applicant should be assertive, professional, use only the industry approved terms, and dress appropriately. An applicant should not seem overeager and should make sure to give the appearance of being completely interested in that job only.
Pretty much like any interview, right?
Not really. If you make a big mistake in just any regular interview, you may not be as likely to become the butt of an industry-wide joke for having violated the sacred “do’s“ and ”don’ts.”
What should you not do?
Do not do what this soon-to-be graduate from the University of Pennsylvania did. Don’t carpet-bomb potential Wall Street employers with a rushed, un-proofread, generic e-mail asking for a job:
Click on the image for a larger version:
In the e-mail, the student writes:
Hello,
My name is ______ and I will be graduating from the University of Pennsylvania this May. I am very interested in investment banking upon graduation and I wanted to know if your firm would be hiring analysts this coming summer. I know you are busy and would appreciate any time you could give me. Thank you in advance and I hope to hear from you soon. My rsum is attached.
Best regards,
Ouch.
First of all, Bcc if you want to include multiple contacts. Many recruiters will immediately mark an e-mail as spam if it seems like it had little effort put into it (especially if it has the appearances of being a one-size-fits-all message).
Secondly, make sure your spelling is correct. Not many employers are interested in an applicant’s “rsum.” That will disqualify any candidate on the spot with no questions asked.
To be fair, it seems that it was out of carelessness rather than sheer stupidity that the email was sent. Scrambling to correct his error, the student quickly sent out an email apologizing for the major faux pas:
Good for him.
Although he tried to correct his error, the banking industry is infamous for being unforgiving and brutal on people who make these kind of mistakes. As a result of the mass e-mailing, the student’s job request has been “making the rounds” with “everyone . . . mocking him,” reports Business Insider.
Hopefully, he will have better luck elsewhere.
Update: How ironic. There was a typo in the original version of this story that has since been identified, caught and liquidated. Thank you.

Posted on October 3, 2011 at 2:11amHowever, if you do not feel the need to correctly spell simple words, then I must also assume that you are not to be trusted with making multi-million dollar deals, or designing my jet engines, or anything productive, for that matter.
And believe it or not, there are a great number of similarly-spelled words that have vastly different meanings. For example, pines and…well, you get the idea.

If you are talking about spelling on the internet, I agree. Leet speak is common and entertaining. However, in the medical world, misspelled words could cost someone their life. It is important in other fields too. Serving a warrant, for instance.

Posted on October 3, 2011 at 5:47amThe public school my children went to did not put a priority on spelling. I think you see more of it now than in the past when it was pushed more in the school system. To me it shows that the person is either careless or stupid. I also don’t like when they use the wrong spelling for a word….like their/there, etc. But for the younger set it seems to not be important. The education system used to focus on basics but now they have branched out into other things and have put less of a priority on spelling and penmanship. Time allotment have squeezed some things out.

Posted on October 3, 2011 at 7:12amWell, with all due respect to your arguement… the only reason your mispellings are even close to being understandable, is that you start from a baseline of correctly spelled words. In other words, there is only one “generation loss” of errors. Obviously not correct, but readable with some effort by the reader. The flaw in your arguement is that, were your misspellings accepted as being just as readable, just as valid as the correctly spelled words, what happens when the next generation loss kicks in? Reason becomes raesen become aresen becomes arson, and so on. It’s the Tower of Bable, but without rules.

Posted on October 3, 2011 at 9:34am“…spelling isn’t as important as some of you make it out to be.”
Except that people do judge you by the words you use. Proper spelling, grammar and syntax are the keys that help people unlock who we are and what we are when they must make such judgements quickly.
Report Post »It also allows us to show that all the hard work we have done to properly educate ourselves was not wasted effort. It takes very little extra time and effort to spell check and proof read.
It is well worth whatever extra effort is required.

Posted on October 3, 2011 at 10:49amActually, yes. It was pretty tough to read.
Let me try to approach this in terms everyone can easily understand: Do you want a guy that can’t spell, can‘t be bothered to use the spellcheck button and clearly doesn’t even proofread himself to put your stock orders through?
Do you remember “Fat Finger?”

Posted on October 3, 2011 at 10:08pm@Dallywama, No I’m not talking about 1337 speak. And you point about a misspelled medical word isn’t relevant here. Those words aren’t commonly used enough to be recognized by the brain in this way.
@Jujubeebee, I never said that learning how to spell in school wasn’t important. If you don’t learn how to spell, then you can’t read the words regardless of whether or not they are spelled correctly. Learning to spell in elementary, middle, and high school is clearly important. Oh, and penmanship? Really? For what?
@Bobmaynes, same thing I said to Juju. Learning how to spell in school is important. But judging someone over one spelling mistake, in my opinion, can cause you to miss the forest for the trees.
@Bloody Sam. All else being equal, of course the guy with no spelling errors wins. But writing someone off immediately simply because they used “ie” after “c” isn’t very wise, if you ask me.
I’ll say it again. My point wasn’t that spelling is useless. Clearly it’s necessary. But I’d take the guy that makes a silly spelling error, yet can think outside of the box, any day over the guy that instantly judges someone over a misspelled word.

Posted on October 2, 2011 at 12:37pmI can understand why this poor fellow is missing when it comes to getting a decent job in his chosen profession. First of all, the classes that they teach do not correspond with what they should be concentrating on. What I mean by that is all these non-sense classes, like sociology, cultural anthropology and such in order to even get to the classes that are technically what you came to learn! Not to mention about the liberal crap that they throw at you with stories that identify how we have mistreated people in the past and that we are the ones that are wrong. I don’t think that college books should have liberal opinions in them to begin with, just stated true facts pertaining to the subjects. It’s terrible that we do not put our focus on our children in what they are learning and emphesis on learning more math, science, reading, writing, physics, than all the other garbage that they throw at you. Did I mention that Algebra should be taught early? Not in 6th grade but earlier. Our school systems have failed many, now how are we going to get them on the right track? The Chinese and everyone else have a one up on us because of it! Education is the only way out of poverty in this day and age!

Posted on October 2, 2011 at 8:11pmThere are plenty of jobs in the oil field where hard work and an ability to learn will allow you to move up and make a great living. The pay for most oil field workers after 5 to 10 years in almost any service field is low to mid 6 figure. The work is hard and the hours are long. But there are many running multi-million dollar operations with no more than a high school diploma or less. The problem these days there are not many in this country willing to work 80 plus hours a week. The illegals are infiltrating this business and are finding it easy to displace the lazy Americans.

Posted on October 2, 2011 at 10:48amWhat is really getting interesting . are tv news stories . The twenty something adults today hardly ever use the old. Who, what where when and why when putting a story together. And you can plainly hear the lack of this single writing rule in their stories. Even the reporters today like at a White House press conference never use it to get details on a issue. Today it’s all about gloss over. Remember I said the lost surface to air missiles in Libya would be a major deal. Intelligence here made mention when Libya first starting to fall apart, But no reporter was smart enough to use that simple rule for details.

————————————————————————————————————————————————
You started out so well, and then? Flop!
After your first three sentences things started going downhill grammatically. “Not getting a responses to his email or negative responses will teach him a lesson.” O U C H! Two directive should have proper punctuation. That’s after guessing that the the first plural of “response” was merely a typographical error. So what should that sentence have looked like? Not getting a response to his email or, negative responses, will teach him a lesson.
“Well, you’d hope so right?” Sounds arrogant with that punctuation location. Let’s fix it without the condensation. Well you’d hope so, right?”
“I mean really”, is not a question. Drop the question mark after “Come on”. Drop the exclamation point after “mkay!” (Acceptable in a story, but not grammatically. “okay” is right). “Stupider”? Seriousl
