Oops: ESPN Analyst Jon Gruden Mistakes Michelle Obama for a Sideline Reporter

As the headline notes, this story is quite funny. But it may not be as egregious as it first sounds.

During last night’s Orange Bowl, in which W. Virginia pummeled Clemson 63-20 70-33,* ESPN booth analyst Jon Gruden — who usually does “Monday Night Football” and is a former NFL coach — decided to try and explain Clemson’s elaborate play-calling system. Here’s how it works in short: about four people on the sideline hold up various pictures, and those pictures translate into a play. One of those pictures was of Michelle Obama. But Gruden didn’t quite see it that way at first:

In Gruden’s defense, ESPN did show sideline reporter Lisa Salter moments later, who was dressed in a similar outfit as Obama and on-the-fly does somewhat resemble the First Lady:

Business Insider, however, wasn’t so forgiving.

Author’s note: apologies to WVU. I mistakenly used the score at the time of Gruden’s flub as the final score. In fact, WVU trounced Clemson 70-33. And as SportsCenter noted this morning, WVU might still be scoring if the game was longer than 60 minutes.

      Why would Gruden even think about Michelle Obama at a football game? At a glance the two women do look similar. But the sideline reporter is much prettier than Michelle.

      You are so right! Both Bush First Ladies were amazing women with a great love for their country! Both were First Class, very gracious and truly love their country! What we have now is a shadow of the worst First Lady ever since she has done NOTHING except embarrass our country! The people who surround her and are supposed to fill the First Lady in on protocol seemed to have totally failed–instead of a First Lady we continue to have an embarrassment to our country!

    I know this story is about how Clemson called plays using photos, but can the reporter at least get the facts right. West Virginia pummeled Clemson 70-33.

    Clemson had 70 points scored against them…………nice to see a loser picture being shown by a loser team.

      I am with you on this. It is tiring to hear the posters here say things about peoples appearance and/or activities unrelated to their political leaning. I don‘t care about the First Lady’s weight, appearance, skin color, etc. I do not fly into a rage when she makes appearances on Sesame Street or Disney channel. Too many posts here about ugly politicians or even worse stupid idle threats about assaulting others for mere words (Yes SpankDaMonkey, I mean you) are real turn offs. The posts remind of the children who used to post in chat boards back when I visited them in 1997.

    If they had shown a picture of a Morlock, the Yeti, or Chewie THEN a photo of Moochelle, I could see how a mistake could have been made.

      I believe that is the play where the officials wipe the scoreboard clean and inform WV that the shovel pass will no longer be allowed because it made for an unfair advantage. Clemson defenders were issued some left overs from “fast and furious” to try and stop Wv running backs but continued to be unsuccessful due to the high cost of ammo. Afterwards, both teams were issued trophies and were treated to massages compliments of the new health care bill.

    What was the purpose of showing Moochelle’s picture and why insult the side-line reporter saying she resembled the obnoxious thing we have in the White House. I will not refer to Moochelle as the first lady, she doesn’t deserve the title.

    Well maybe if Clemson would have put as much effort into their playing ball as they did in the ( so called elaborate play calling) using pictures of Michelle Obama and others they would know how to move the foot ball down the field an score points. Whatever play fat face michelle stood for didn’t work worth a dam. heck just maybe thats the way the election will go, if we have one.. .
