Santorum Rep. Cites Obamas Radical Islamic Policies During MSNBC Interview

In what is surely the most unfortunate gaffe of the day, Rick Santorum spokeswoman Alice Stewart made a comment about radical Islam and President Barack Obama on MSNBC’s “Andrea Mitchell Reports.”

This morning, we brought you Santorum’s communication director Hogan Gidley and his response to the candidate’s “phony theology” comments over the weekend. But when Stewart also took a crack at explaining the contender‘s original intentions when speaking about Obama’s agenda, she dug the controversy hole even deeper.

Stewart mistakenly claimed that Santorum was referring to Obama’s “radical Islamic policies” — a slip of the tongue that is gaining her (and the campaign) some unwanted attention.

“There is a type of theological secularism when in comes to the global warmists in this country. That’s what he was referring to,” Stewart said during the interview. “He was referring to the president’s policies in terms of the radical Islamic policies the president has.”

After the segment aired, Stewart called the network and said that she misspoke. POLITICO has more:

Mitchell noted she had missed Stewart’s phrasing of “radical Islamic policies” during the live interview.

“She had repeatedly said during that same interview ‘radical environmental policies’ and she said she slipped when she apparently said [it],” Mitchell said. “I did not hear it, or I would have caught her on it and tried to get a correction at the moment. I really, frankly, did not hear her use the word Islamic, but the tape tells the tale.”

While the comment is widely being dubbed accidental, The Washington Post’s Anne Kornblut said later in the day that conspiracy theorists may still grab onto it as an intentional message the Santorum campaign is trying to covertly convey.

“I expect we’re going to hear more from Alice Stewart apologizing about those remarks,” Kornblut said. “But there will be conspiracy theorists thinking it was some kind of message she was trying to get out or it was really on the mind of the Santorum campaign when they are talking about President Obama.”

Mediate’s Jon Bershad also commented on the error, offering his views about how Stewart’s slip-up came to fruition:

Here’s how I think it happened. Just this past weekend, the New York Times Magazine published a lengthy article about the way the brain breaks down difficult tasks into easily repeatable habit packs so that you can do them over and over again without expanding too much brain power, using as examples a rat in a maze and a person learning how to back a car out of a driveway.

People who work for the campaigns of the GOP candidates have to trash President Obama a lot. It only makes sense that their brains would package it into easy habits filled with buzzwords like “socialist” and “radical Islam” even if they have absolutely no connection to the conversation at hand. Stewart probably wasn’t attempting some kind of deceptive fear-mongering. She was just a political rat stuck in a campaign maze and trying to get to the White House cheese.

    Obama has been telling us about his Islamic faith from the beginning. He visited 57 states ( OIC), my Islamic faith to Stephinopoulis, bowing to the Saudi king, his apology tour etc,etc………..

    I wish somebody in the political arena would have the courage to say what the man himself has been telling us for years.

      I read Demas…comments as the tone of the article as being slanted negatively towrds Santorum. I have noticed headlines and other content more appropriate for HufPo and there are many references to “articles” from HufPo – just makes me wonder whether the editors previous gig with HufPo has any bearing – nah – just conspiratorial thinking I’m sure

      Item: whenever they travel, the dog goes on a separate plane. They always have some excuse for this, but Muslim custom is for pets to travel separately from the family. Item: ODumber’s wedding ring and watch are always missing during Ramadan–when Muslims are told to wear no jewelry. He always lies and says “they were sent out for repair” or something, but isn’t it odd they need repairing every time it is Ramadan? Ms. Stewart may not have meant to say Obama has radical Islamic policies but anyone whose eyes, ears, hearts and minds are opened know that to be true. He may not be sleeping with the enemy but he might as well be placing chocolates on their pillows. In my heart, this was no more of a “slip” than when Obama responded to Stephanopoulos about his Muslim faith.       I’m with you (unless someone better shows up… not really sure who that might be, at this point. I guess a part of me is still holding out a shred of hope that a genuine Reaganesque Statesman will roll into the fray in a pick-up truck full of principle, honor, and Constitutional Conservatism and commence to carpet-bomb the American people with unvarnished truth and can-do-ism… but yeah, I’m probably dreaming.) GO RICK!

      I would gladly take Marco Rubio – now, THERE is a genuine statesman who speaks Constitutional Conservatism so fluently that he exposes the vacuous inanities of progressive and liberal arguments WITHOUT EVEN TRYING. Seriously, he states his positions so well that his PERIPHERAL phrasing completely disarms the opposition, leaving the meat of his message wide open for free expression of Conservative ideals. It is actually exciting and fun for me to listen to Rubio speak, like it once was to listen to Reagan. Unfortunately, Rubio is still very young and didn’t deem himself ready for a presidential run yet. I will be praying that his being in the system doesn’t corrupt him before he can really make a difference. If Rubio gets ruined inside the beltway, then I am probably going to give up hope for our future as a united nation.

      Rick has FAR BIGGER problems fiscally than morally. Obama’s “spirituality” should be approached with apprehension, but I would not make it public. If Rick is going to take this route, then he should do it like Glenn and Rabbi Lapin in terms of Baal. Unfortunately, that will be just as problematic.

      This was not a flob or misspeak. This sounds like its something Santorum and his Press Secretary have had lots of discussions about, “his radical Islamic policies” and in this case it just accidentally slipped out. You talk about something enough you get used to saying it, its gets pretty hard to hide it.

      Romney has had every chance in the world to take this election. They were ready to give it to him in November but he failed. A spokes person slipping a tongue once isn’t something to have concern about. Rick is at least telling the truth on so many issues with Obama that the weak spineless Establishment can‘t handle it because they don’t want to win this election they just want to control Congress.
