It’s one of the sweetest, most intimate messages you’ll hear all year. A love-sick British soldier calls his girlfriend from the front lines to propose. But when she doesn’t pick up, he instead leaves the proposal as a voicemail. But there’s just one problem: he didn’t call his girlfriend.
According to the Daily Mail, the story gets even worse. Not only does the soldier admit he lost a fellow soldier and friend in a recent bombing, he apparently can’t call again for another month.
The message was supposed to be for a woman named Samantha, but instead was left on the voicemail of 44-year-old mother of three Diane Potts:
The Daily Mail provides a transcript of the call:
‘I should be back in three months so we can be together then.
‘One of my guys has just been blown up, so I feel sad, really sad.
‘I feel so sad that I didn’t get to speak to you just now, but I’ll speak to you next month.
‘Don’t ever forget I love you. I love you so much, I love you with all my heart and I was going to ask you, don’t answer, obviously you can’t answer, but will you marry me?
‘I love you and I’m really sad I didn’t get a chance to speak to you today, but you know I love you, don’t you, I love you with all my heart.
‘I don’t know what to say babes. I can’t wait until you give birth to my baby, my little soldier.
‘I’ll do everything in my heart and I’ll try my hardest to fight to protect you… (inaudible)
‘I’ve got to go back out here now.
Hi baby, it’s me. I‘m sorry I couldn’t call you last month, but you know what it’s like out here.
‘I love you with all my heart, don’t ever forget that, I love you, all right Samantha, I love you, bye bye.’
The Daily Mail says the paper is still trying to figure out the identities of the soldier and his girlfriend.

Posted on January 26, 2011 at 7:47pmOh God, please let the powers that be in the military help these 2 connect. I know my daughter-in-law & many of the other military wives on base sleep with their telephone on their pillows. I’m so sorry he dialed the wrong number. Someone will help. I have faith in God & the good in humanity.

Posted on January 26, 2011 at 12:27pmMadness is slowly taking over Great Britain in the form of Islam. We had better take a good long look and stop it before it really takes root here.

Posted on January 26, 2011 at 1:03pmI don’t want to stop it. Freedom of religion is extremely important!! However, I do want to kill the extremist muslims who want to kill me. Yep I said it! Honesty is the best policy.

Posted on January 26, 2011 at 12:26pmI think this one is a mega-ooops! However, I hope his loved has gotten the message somehow, so she knows he wants her to marry him. Sometimes these things happen, even in this age of state of the art ‘no mistake’ communications. I wish them all the best.
@82ndAirborne
Have you ever known anyone to have something like this occur to them?

Posted on January 26, 2011 at 12:37pmNo, not exactly. I have seen/heard several cases of a soldier who has multiple lady friends write several love letters only to place them in the wrong envelope. After a week or so I had to order them to go to mail call!!!!!!!!

I imagine those guys with the multi loves in life were glad to be elsewhere at the time!!! They would be in serious need of the protection just to keep what would be left of their short life span intact.
The only thing worse than a woman scorned is two (or more) women scorned.

Posted on January 26, 2011 at 11:44amOh, my heart is breaking for this young soldier, and for his fiance. What a lovely and touching story. Yes! God, please watch over this young man, let him walk through this violence physically unscathed, so that he can marry the woman he loves. Take care of his heart, Lord. Give him peace, while helping him to be the best of warriers. Thank you, God for all of the men and women who fight for the freedom of the world. Amen.

Posted on January 26, 2011 at 2:57pmMercy. He sounded so very young…….these young men and women who willingly serve in the Armed Forces, here in America, in Britain, Australia, and every other coalition country, are the very best that society has to offer. God bless each and every one of them and may God bless their families and loved ones back home.

Posted on January 26, 2011 at 12:10pmI wish the soldier and his love the most for their future togeather, stories like this remind us of just how hard they have it and what they are sacrificing to protect us, by their own choice and the choice of their loved ones. I hope messages like this will remind us of that daily, they are in harms way so we will not need to be.
Bring them home Lord, soon and safely.
