‘Operation Payback’: Notorious Hacker Group ‘Anonymous’ Unveils Pro-WikiLeaks Message

One of the World Wide Web’s most notorious underground “hacking” groups came forward Thursday with a pronouncement of their own agenda.

Anonymous, an online conglomerate of computer geniuses, nerds and troublemakers have prided themselves on carrying out disruptive stunts in the past, namely targeting Scientologists, hacking TIME’s “Most Influential” online vote and flooding YouTube with uncensored pornographic videos.  Most recently, however, the group has thrown its widespread support behind WikiLeaks and its controversial founder, Julian Assange, as the organization recently published thousands of classified government documents.

On Wednesday evening, Anonymous’ Twitter feed was unexpectedly shut down, prompting increased speculation that the group had been responsible for “hacking” several companies which have severed ties with and services to WikiLeaks — such as Visa and Mastercard — and even former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.  The group, as identified by Scientific American, is dubbing its latest ventures as “Operation Payback” and has been openly bragging of their coordinated cyber attacks.

Now, an eerie new video has been released which describes their agenda:

We are not a terrorist organization or a group of “hackers” as governments, demagogues, and the media would have you believe. We are a diverse group that touches every aspect of philosophy, religion, and politics ever conceived by man. At this time, Anonymous, as a distributed consciousness, is focused on protesting peacefully for Freedom of Expression on the Internet. We ask the world to support us, not for our sake, but for your own. When governments control information they control you. We will resist until our dying breath. Pay attention citizens and governments of the world.

    The easiest way to get the hackers to quit is to start charging Weakyleaky for all the damage that occurs because of their interference. It won’t take long for the bill to start adding up. Then just add to the charges of Julian. Hit where it hurts, and that is in the pocketbook.

    Ahhh the popular 4chan group Anonymous. Most of these guys don’t even hack, though the word hack is so misused. Most of these guys just DDoS sites until they crash. I am sure there are smart people in the bunch, but a True Hacker doesn’t tell anything. A ******* will brag and cause destruction.

    This “Anonymous” group is actually a bunch of stupid pre-teens who meet on this board /b/ on a website called 4chan. They aren’t going to do anything. They can’t do anything. They claim credit any time anyone gets hacked online, it’s pathetic. On top of that, these idiots actually believe that 4chan doesn’t disclose their IPs to the FBI at any time they feel the need to ask. Like any other pre-teen and social shut-in, these poor souls just want attention. Nothing to worry about. In fact, by just having this article here, they probably feel as if they’ve succeeded in some way – it’s THAT sad.

    Interesting that they don’t seem to be carrying out attacks anywhere, except the “free world.” Their hypocrisy is amazing. They mention supposed atrocities by the US Government, but fail to mention the massacre by the Chinese government in Tianimin square. They want people to help them and support them in “supporting freedom of expression,” and, by their latest action, full internet transparency. At they same time, they hide behind a cloak of secrecy, presumably to try and avoid having to face the consequences of their own actions.

    Whether they like to admit it or not, their actions tell us exactly what they are: cyber-terrorists and anarchists.

      @Walkwithme: It is already happening … today when I tried to access the Fox News web site, I was greeted with an alert window stating something or other about their certificate being harmful, i.e. the site wasn’t safe. I had to bypass, by adding Fox News as a trusted site, before my browser was directed to foxnews.com. I then decided to see if this same “alert” popped up if I tried to access ABC News, NBC News or CNN News … nope, not one alert … browser went straight to their sites. I live in a very small rural town in Arkansas so this truly surprises me!

      Wikileaks gives the government the excuse it wants to control the internet. Watch for increased support for internet control so that this won’t happen again.

      The real focus should be on the safeguards at the information source. How could a private walk in and download millions of sensitive documents and the system allow it and not even ask any questions?

      Here is where security should be tightened. This is where changes need to happen.
      Punish the culprits, but don’t shut down our communications.

      Glenn has been all over the place about Assange. His latest stance is that although he supports freedom of speech, Wikileaks is really about those who want revolution/anarchy. At the same time, Glenn informs us that Obama wants to use Wikileaks to justify a clamp-down on the Internet. So We the People are caught in the crossfire of this clash of the titans: the do-now revolutionaries who are out in full rioting mode, and Obama, who will not survive if he gives in to the rioters’ manifold demands. No matter what our position vis-à-vis the leaks and the ensuing revolts, including the ones in Congress, We the People lose. God forbid that I should ever “side” with the left. However, I will continue to stand with Assange ON PRINCIPLE, just like Glenn stood with that terrorist he thought deserved to have his Miranda Rights read. The left agreed with Glenn in that instance, but that did not faze him.

      I stand for freedom of the media, and IMO, the Internet constitutes a modern media outlet. If your definition of media is restrictive, call it freedom of speech. That is why I will continue to support Assange & others’ right to PUBLISH info handed to them AND the NYT. (Breaking news for jihadists: join the media, and spy away or betray!)

      Obama will likely use this “crisis” to steal yet another one of our freedoms. I will not side with him (which is ultimately what those who condemn the leaks are doing). The truth is this bottom-up revolt cannot succeed unless it is accompanied by a top-down crush. We have a deadly domestic enemy, so can Glenn please explain why we should help him fight his enemies?

      V-Grunge and others: you are correct in that the insider (angry homosexual who had no business being in the military according to current policy) has committed a crime. You are WRONG where it comes to disclosure of stolen classified information no matter how it was obtained. Had the WikiLosers turned over the classified materials, no charges would be brought against them. The fact that disclosed information clearly marked classified, means they have committed espionage against the US as you will see in the coming indictments. Were these people actually smart, as opposed to just technologically savvy; they would have kept the fact that they had the info quiet and used it in one of the following ways. Distribute the evidence indicating a crime to authorities and papers simultaneously or covertly used the info to extort a certain desired outcome form whatever Government in question. The wholesale dump is primarily intended to discredit the US and lower our status in the word. They have absolutely failed to do their PR homework and have cloaked their stupidity in a bogus 1st amendment claim. I agree with the previously stated sentiments that this incident gives the Government an excuse to further restrict the free flow of information, which is the opposite result of the Anons have stated.
