Opponents Push New Efforts to De-fund & Discredit Planned Parenthood

NEW YORK (AP) — From its defiant origins in 1916, Planned Parenthood has not shied away from controversy — fighting to legalize birth control, offering candid sex education to adolescents, evolving into America’s largest provider of abortion.

Its foes have been relentless, and it now faces some of the most withering attacks of its history. A bill in Congress would strip the organization of federal family-planning grants and a series of covertly taped videos seek to depict some Planned Parenthood staff as willing to assist sex traffickers.

On one side, there are prominent conservatives suggesting that Planned Parenthood may be a criminal enterprise.

On the other, Planned Parenthood leaders and allies are seizing the moment to rally support, saying the ultimate target of the attacks is the ability of American women to get the reproductive health services they desire.

“We’ve been here for the past 95 years, and we’ll be here for the next 95,” said Planned Parenthood’s president, Cecile Richards.

Through its affiliates, Planned Parenthood operates more than 800 clinics and health centers across the country, serving more than 3 million patients a year.

A half-dozen of those clinics — in New Jersey, New York and Virginia — figure in the undercover videos released over the past two weeks by Live Action, a California-based anti-abortion group. The videos show a man posing as a pimp and a woman posing as a prostitute seeking health services for underage sex workers.

Planned Parenthood fired one clinic manager in New Jersey who offered advice to the visitors, but otherwise says its staff responded professionally and reported the visits to their superiors.

Planned Parenthood’s national office notified the FBI before any videos were released and accused Live Action of resorting to deceptive “dirty tricks.” It also announced a nationwide retraining program to ensure that clinic staffers were familiar with rules about reporting possible danger to minors.

While much about the videos is in dispute, they provided fresh ammunition for anti-abortion activists promoting a bill introduced by Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind., that would deny federal family-planning funds to any organization that performs abortions. Pence makes clear that Planned Parenthood is his target; it would lose more than $70 million in annual funding.

“Every American should be shocked that an employee of the largest recipient of federal funds under Title X has been recorded aiding and abetting underage sex trafficking,” Pence said. “The time to deny any and all funding to Planned Parenthood is now.”

By law, federal funds may not be used directly for abortions. But Pence argues that the grants, by covering overhead and operational costs, free up other money to provide abortions.

Planned Parenthood’s staunchest allies in Congress — primarily liberal Democrats — have vowed to fight the proposed funding cut.

“In my community, Planned Parenthood is a very highly regarded mainstream organization,” said Rep. Lois Capps, D-Calif., who depicted Pence’s bill as “driven by an extreme ideological agenda.”

Richards said Planned Parenthood, with a $1 billion annual budget, could survive the loss of the federal grants but would be forced to close some clinics and serve fewer people.

“This would roll back decades of progress for women’s health care,” she said in a telephone interview.

Planned Parenthood dates its beginnings to 1916 when Margaret Sanger, her sister and a friend opened America’s first birth control clinic in Brooklyn. At the time, women couldn’t vote or divorce abusive husbands, and contraception was illegal.

The clinic was raided, and Sanger was convicted of disseminating birth control information. Undaunted, she founded two organizations that later merged to form the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

Sanger’s personal legacy is complicated. She opposed abortion — yet the organization she founded now provides a quarter of America’s 1.2 million annual abortions. Her views on eugenics and racial issues remain a subject of bitter debate to this day.

Over the decades, Planned Parenthood played pivotal roles in easing laws against contraception, popularizing the birth control pill and setting the stage for the Supreme Court’s 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling that established a woman’s right to have an abortion.

Its clinics have been repeated targets of bombings, arson and protests. A receptionist at one of its clinics in Brookline, Mass., was shot dead in 1994 by John Salvi, who described himself as a militant foe of abortion.

Abortions account for only a small fraction of the services provided by Planned Parenthood — mainly providing contraception, screening for cancer and testing for sexually transmitted diseases. Many of the clients are low-income women with few other options for non-emergency health care.

At many clinics, demand is high. On a recent workday, the waiting room at the Brooklyn health center, which occupies an entire floor of an office building, was filled to overflowing, and center director Nellie Santiago-Rivera said her 35-member staff often sees 150 patients a day.

Most of the Brooklyn clients are black and Hispanic women in their 20s, many without a primary-care doctor of their own.

“This is their community health center,” said Evelyn Intondi, a Planned Parenthood nurse-midwife.

Intondi said the undercover videos had been the topic of much discussion among clinic staff.

“You’re angry, you’re upset,” she said. “You wonder, what’s the perception of our clients coming in?”

However, she said the campaigns against Planned Parenthood reinforced her resolve.

“It reignites the fire in your belly that brought you to this in the beginning,” Intondi said. “This is what I do. There are definitely some people who don’t like it.”

Planned Parenthood’s foes are active on the federal, state and local level. On Thursday, Virginia’s House of Delegates voted to prohibit not only state government but also local governments from allocating money to Planned Parenthood clinics.

The bill’s sponsor, Delegate Robert Marshall, objects to the clinics’ role in providing abortion but also holds Planned Parenthood responsible for broader phenomena he links to the sexual revolution — including out-of-wedlock pregnancies, adolescent sex and sexually transmitted diseases.

“Clearly this group has been on the cutting edge of attacking moral standards,” Marshall said in an interview. “Now we’re reaping their revolution, and people are having second thoughts.”

While Planned Parenthood says it retains broad public support, some of its critics believe the tide of opinion is running against it.

Melinda Delahoyde is executive director of Care Net, a nationwide network of centers that counsel women with unintended pregnancies on alternatives to abortion. She said the cumulative effect of the undercover videos, public unease about abortion and parental concerns about sex education are taking a toll on Planned Parenthood.

“There are cracks in the dike that are widening on many different fronts,” Delahoyde said.

Planned Parenthood leaders say their attitude toward sexuality is a key reason for the animosity they face.

“We are a safe place where people can go and ask difficult questions about sex,” Richards said. “We do this for teens and adults, gays and straights, and that really irritates some people who believe sex is only for procreation.”

Serene Jones, president of Union Theological Seminary and an expert on gender issues, said Planned Parenthood deserved credit for directly addressing the complexities of human sexuality.

“It would be wonderful if we lived in a world where we didn’t need Planned Parenthood, where women had all the information and resources they needed regarding their own sexual health,” she said. “But given we don’t have that, it fills a very important role.”

I think Planned Parenthood should not be supported by the government. If they are as popular as they say, let them get funds from their supporters. I am not one of those supporters and I do not want to support anyone with the attitudes of these butchers. Their Founder Margret Sanger said: “…human weeds,‘ ’reckless breeders,‘ ’spawning… human beings who never should have been born.” Margaret Sanger, Pivot of Civilization, referring to immigrants and poor people. The purpose in promoting birth control was “to create a race of thoroughbreds,” she wrote in the Birth Control Review, Nov. 1921 (p. 2) . “We do not want word to go out that we want to exterminate the ***** population,” she said, “if it ever occurs to any of their more rebellious members.” Woman’s Body, Woman’s Right: A Social History of Birth Control in America, by Linda Gordon. more quotes at http://www.dianedew.com/sanger.htm. The rebellion continues in 2012. Vote.

Now it is their RESPONSIBILITY to bring forth that life! If they then CHOOSE not to raise that child, they can make the CHOICE to bestow that blessed innocent child on someone who CHOOSES to raise it gratefully!

If they are so popular, they can survive on their own financial abilities. If liberals love them so much, they should just donate money to them….out of their OWN pockets. If businesses can not survive without being propped up by Tax money, then maybe they are just not wise “investments” and the spigot should be shut off.

I don‘t know how Sanger’s racial and eugenics views could be up for debate. She was very clear. For example, she was associated with the ***** Project, the main idea of which was to recriute charismatic black ministers who would encourage black women to practice birth control. In a letter to the founder of this project, Dr. Clarence Gamble, dated December 10, 1939 she wrote:

“We do not want the word to go out that we want to exterminate the ***** population and the minister is the man who can straighten that idea out if it ever occurs to any of the more rebellious members.”

In her 1932 “Plan for Peace” Sanger wanted “to apply a stern and rigid policy of sterilization and segregation to that grade of population whose progeny is already tainted, or whose inheritance is such that objectionable traits may be transmitted to offspring.“ She also wanted to take an inventory of ”illiterates, paupers, unemployables, criminals, prostitutes, dope-fiends“ and ”segregate them on farms and open spaces as long as necessary for the strengthening and development of moral conduct.”

    Clearly a vile human being.

As I have stated before in this forum before I have no problem with an organization like Planned Parenthood that offers low cost contraceptves (I’m not catholic), STD testing and the like….HOWEVER Planned Parenthood has gone WAY beyond helping women in these areas. I do NOT believe taxpayers should foot the bill for abortions period. I also do not believe or any organization should be in the business of helping underage girls get abortions, contraceptives and such without an adults consent. They have been in the business of usurping parents and the right they have to know what goes on with their children. That is abhorrent to me and I believe this should NOT occur. I know alot of people think otherwise, but I raised 3 children and it is up to PARENTS to raise their children, not some organization. I also know there are reasons (some valid) that SOME underage children actually need their help in certain circumstances but this place is an abomination and should be defunded YESTERDAY.

This article does a great job of obfuscating the true nature of Planned Parenthood of America. As evidenced clearly by her own writings, Planned Parenthood founder, Margaret Sanger, was a racist of the most dangerous kind. Her own correspondence shows that she was happily in league with the Eugenics movement of the time, and that included alliances with Adolph Hitler, as well as British, Italian and other European fascists, communists, socialists. These people sought, not the betterment of mankind, but the “weeding out” of those they considered “undesirable”. Sanger’s present day disciples have the same goals but color them in the new euphemisms popular among the “progressive movement”. The Planned Parenthood activities exposed by the recent undercover videos, as well as the horrors exposed in the Kermit Gosnell serial murder case, simply exemplify the mindset of the organization and the results of their programs. No local, state or federal tax money should be used to support the Culture of Death promoted by Planned Parenthood and like-minded organizations.

Since the left outlined it’s only less than 10% of Planned Parenthoods entire budge, PP should be able to look at simply making up the 10% with donations from private groups. Who knows, maybe they could get Soros to make up that difference. This will by no means shut down PP, unless they are outright lying about how much federal money keeps them going.

And who decides to murder said babies? Their “elite” betters? We’ve had dictators in the past who had the same idea, and it turned out rather badly.

I’ll take my chances with God deciding which babies deserve to live, thank you, rather than Margaret Sanger’s professional death panel members. You tax the hard-working two-parent families who are struggling to take care of their OWN children and guess what you get less of? Margret was brilliant I remember Dr Mengela telling
me we should follower her lead, and so we invented
      The Final Solution.

All children born, beyond what would be required to keep up the population to a desired level, must necessarily perish, unless room is made for them by the deaths of grown persons. We should facilitate, instead of foolishly and vainly endeavoring to impede, the operations of nature in producing this mortality.

Malthus disciples believed if Western civilization were to survive, the physically unfit, the materially poor, the spiritually diseased, the racially inferior, and the mentally incompetent had to be suppressed and isolated–or even, perhaps, eliminated. His disciples felt the subtler and more “scientific” approaches of education, contraception, sterilization and abortion were more “practical and acceptable ways” to ease the pressures of the alleged overpopulation.

Critics of Malthusianism said the group “produced a new vocabulary of mumbo-jumbo. It was all hard-headed, scientific and relentless.” Further, historical facts have proved the Malthusian mathematical scheme regarding overpopulation to be inaccurate, though many still believe them.

Despite the falsehoods of Malthus’ overpopulation claims, Sanger nonetheless immersed herself in Malthusian eugenics. Grant wrote she argued for birth control using the “scientifically verified” threat of poverty, sickness, racial tension and overpopulation as its background. Sanger’s publication, The Birth Control Review (founded in 1917) regularly published pro-eugenic articles from eugenicists, such as Ernst Ruin. Although Sanger ceased editing The Birth Control Review in 1929, the ABCL continued to use it as a platform for eugenic ideas.

Sanger built the work of the ABCL, and, ultimately, Planned Parenthood, on the ideas and resources of the eugenics movement. Grant reported that “virtually all of the organization’s board members were eugenicists.” Eugenicists financed the early projects, from the opening of birth control clinics to the publishing of “revolutionary” literature. Eugenicists comprised the speakers at conferences, authors of literature and the providers of services “almost without the exception.” And Planned Parenthood’s international work was originally housed in the offices of the Eugenics Society. The two organizations were intertwined for years.

The ABCL became a legal entity on April 22, 1922, in New York. Before that, Sanger illegally operated a birth control clinic in October 1916, in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, New York, which eventually closed. The clinic serviced the poor immigrants who heavily populated the area–those deemed “unfit” to reproduce.

Sanger’s early writings clearly reflected Malthus’ influence. She writes:

Organized charity itself is the symptom of a malignant social disease. Those vast, complex, interrelated organizations aiming to control and to diminish the spread of misery and destitution and all the menacing evils that spring out of this sinisterly fertile soil, are the surest sign that our civilization has bred, is breeding and perpetuating constantly increasing numbers of defectives, delinquents and dependents.

Walkwithme, do you really expect me to think that you are so stupid as to think planned parenthood is the only source of birth control information available in the country? Or do you think I’m stupid enough to believe your statement? Sorry to disappoint you, but I’ve got a teenager in the public school system learning all about sex and birth control on my tax dollars.

I‘m hearing the same old failed liberal rational for govt’s social engineering; if we don’t continue paying the piper then there will be more, big scary problems; crime, cost, human suffering, etc. The only proven outcome of almost 3 generations of social engineering is that the more the government does to remove consequences and discourage responsibility for individual behavior, the more irresponsible people and society become.

Bottom line is government should not have any role in the sexual practices, health, or method of birth control. Making tax payers fund these controversial “services” is not constitutionally defendable and doing it for 95 years doesn’t make it so. If it is determined to be a legal and valued service, then let the free market, volunteer and charity sources fill the need. Again, like so many other things, this should NOT be a function of government and more of these kind of things will need to be axed. Rep. Pence deserves credit for his initiative and courage to lead the charge against this immoral and unjust rip off of the tax payer. Lets do our part to make sure he gets the support needed to defund it.

The shame of it all is what Obama did as one of his very first acts as president…

“Obama reverses Bush abortion-funds policy 1/23/09

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama on Friday struck down the Bush administration‘s ban on giving federal money to international groups that perform abortions or provide abortion information — an inflammatory policy that has bounced in and out of law for the past quarter-century.

Obama’s move, the latest in an aggressive first week reversing contentious Bush policies, was warmly welcomed by liberal groups and denounced by abortion rights foes.

The ban has been a political football between Democratic and Republican administrations since GOP President Ronald Reagan first adopted it 1984. Democrat Bill Clinton ended the ban in 1993, but Republican George W. Bush re-instituted it in 2001 as one of his first acts in office…”

Obama claims to be a Christian, yet he does this? He truly is evil.

I wanted to file a class action lawsuit against the federal government, for wrongfully encouraging mothers to kill their babies: the gov. And doctors have always known they were murdering a human with a heart: it cannot be taken to court because “it is a law”. Smoking was legal and it was changed. A lot of groups are making a living from killing babies!

If they are financially able to provide for themselves then why should TAXPAYERS pay this organization, whose founder believed in racial, mental and financial genocide, this is the foundation of Planned Parenthood’s “business plan”. It is to restrict the growth of minorities and undesirable classes by restricting pregnancies among those classes. In my opinion that is legal genocide since it is aimed at generations of blacks, latinos and the poor since the Progressives feel that they are not worth the air they breathe. Just watch videos of George Bernard Shaw the Progressive author of the early movement.

      - I wonder if she ever studied Christian sexuality, there’s nothing scriptural
Or theologically based that suggests we should do anything to encourage
Anyone but a married adult man& woman to be intimate. God doesn’t punish
In this life For sins we commit, but the further away we turn the more we punish

Don’t count our Lucifarian Govt to Actually listen to the people on this one.
The are making Sanger a Hero

Canadian Free Press | It’s sad that one person’s icon is another’s mass murderer. One would think the choice would be clear, but when history is disseminated based on political preference, the truth becomes a casualty. Take for example an exhibition at the Smithsonian celebrating “Women of Our Time”.
In the book accompanying the Smithsonian exhibit, “Women of Our Time: 75 Portraits of Remarkable Women,” Sanger is described as being notable for pursuing her goal of helping women “whose health had been devastated by excessive child-bearing” despite being imprisoned and attacked for advocating birth control. But Sanger, who opened hundreds of birth control clinics across the country, was also well-known for her support of eugenics and abortion.

If taxpayer monies can be used to celebrate a woman who advocated the deaths of those she deemed unworthy and useless, imagine what can happen if the same people who idolize her ideas get a greater hold on funding them

I coul dbe wrong, but I was under the impression that in nearly every state of the union, a school-age child could go into their school nurse and get exactly the assistance Planned (not) Parenthood provides, minus the perfoming of actual abortions. Advice, counseling, condoms, etc.

Is there any other medical procedure that Planned (not) Parenthood provides?

Seems to me that if school is required until a child is 16 years old, and we have sex ed in schools, everyone should have all the sex ed they need, provided by the state, independent of Planned (not) Parenthood – if they didn’t provide abortions, they really have no purpose.

Finally, is there anything Planned (not) Parenthood provides that a curious teen, single woman couldn’t learn on the internet, in a library, or at a local book store?
