Oprah Laments Having to Pay High Taxes: My Accountants Bring Me ‘Tequila’

Even Oprah hates April 15.

The media queen admitted to Piers Morgan on Monday night that she laments having to pay such high taxes every year — in the form of large checks to the IRS — and the event has even become a depressing “ceremony” complete with alcoholic drinks.

The admission came after Oprah told Morgan during an interview that she signs every check for her business over $100,000. Morgan then asked, “Does it hurt you? Do you feel pain, physical pain?”

She responded: “The most pain I feel is ‑‑ and my accountants will tell you this. Every time I write a check to the IRS, it’s a ceremony. They come in ‑‑ for years they came in with wine. Now they come in with tequila”:

On Tuesday, Glenn Beck responded to Oprah’s comments. On his radio show, he said it was ironic that Oprah laments high taxes but yet campaigned for Barack Obama — the man who has talked about redistributing wealth and recently tried to raise taxes on those making over $250,000.

“If you really believed that social justice was achieved through the IRS, you wouldn’t come in with wine or tequila,” Beck said. “You would come in with champagne. Congratulations. Do you know how much social justice you have just provided? Congratulations. You would view it as a celebration. It would not be painful”:

Does anyone blame her? I know, she has been on Mr. Obama (Tax increasers) side, but…..who can really blame her for hating the IRS? I don’t think so many people would be mad at the IRS if…..and only if….the money was spent on (Protection) that’s it! We don’t need the Federal government for anything else. States can take care of everything from roads, schools, jails/prisons, etc… The problem with the IRS/Federal Government is, they seem to be over reaching. I still wonder what would happen to our officials if NO ONE PAID taxes. Sounds far fetched, but can they really put EVERYONE in prison for tax evasion?

Sorry for the duplicate post, I replied to the wrong thread. How about a retail sales tax as our only tax. That way everyone pays. A flat tax is great for those who pay taxes. A retail Tax hits anyone that buys food, clothing, etc..

I can’t stand Oprah. She is such a phoney. Liberals knock Glenn Beck for being all about money, but they praise Oprah. Her complaining about taxes shows how hypocritical she and progressives are. If she were truly a believer of Obamics, then she would want to pay MORE in taxes to redistribute HER wealth to all “the poor people” she says she wants to help. It is the same old progressive rhetoric: “Do as I say, not as I do!“ AND ”Redistribute your wealth, but not mine. Afterall, you’re just a hardworking peon, but I’m a black goddess, so make me richer by supporting my books and network so I can support a government to take your wealth and have the means to hide and keep mine.” I bet those accountants who bring the tequila have hidden a lot and worked to find as many loopholes as possible.

I am truly bewildered by billionaire liberals. They support the left who believe in taking as much as they can from the rich, but then the billionaires do whatever they can to AVOID TAXES. Both Gates and Buffet (who endorsed Obama and endorsed raising taxes on the rich) put all their money in a TRUST so the government can’t get it. If they really believed in liberalism, they would give their money to their trusted government to spend. The ultimate in hypocracy.

Don’t be bewildered SueDinny, it is real simple. Liberals derive their meaning and purpose in life by making themselves feel “special”, “better”, and “smarter” than the “common man”, and this is why hypocrisy in its most pure form means nothing to them. While I will acknowledge that the average citizen is an ignorant, apathetic fool, I am confident the reason is elitist liberal policy to include corruption throughout government, politically correct education, and a dishonest media. The reality is liberals need others to be ignorant in order to feel important, so they promote policy that achieves these goals. Real simple, do not try to over analyze it—basic liberal human nature.

      Sue,
I had a theory once that those few people who belong to such an elite group- such as Gates and Buffet- want to keep that group exclusive and tight knit. The taxes they pay are still a drop in the bucket in the grand scheme of things. On April 16, they are still worth billions. Gates doesn’t want anyone near him, as does Buffet. Taxes is probably the most effective way of keeping things on this route.

Maybe this is true, maybe it’s complete nonsense. I don’t have any other explanation for you though..

Oprah is part of the media elite who think they are “special” but always try to be like the commoner when making appearances—-it is just her persona.

The sad reality is that if someone like Oprah, who uses rhetoric and other bile to stir up racism and hatred towards others is so successful what does that say about this country? Not much. Face it people, we are an Idiocracy, last one out turn out the lights (well, no need, we can just print more money to pay for that).

Several years ago I went to CA to be with my cousin during the time of my Aunts death. She lives in an upper middle class neighborhood, and her friends are much in the same income bracket as she is. I had taken on the airplane with me the book “The Purpose Filled Life” which was laying on the coffee table. Some of her friends coming in to pay respect made note of the book and started discussing it, and how they felt it was “preachy”, and to much Bible reference. They much preferred another book that “Oprah” had recommended and preferred TV preachers who didn’t speak so much about the Bible. I say all this to say something I noted while listening to the conversations going on around me. These folks all believe in the “Gospel according to Oprah”. I quickly recognized that they felt if Oprah says it, it must be so. When I told them that if it wasn’t in the Bible, then I didn’t believe it, they looked at me like I had horns, and dismissed me quickly after that. I watched Oprah when she first started out, but somewhere along the line, when she started becoming her own “religion”, I disenfranchised myself of the habit.

      @Ironmann

I have studied the ideas of flat taxes for a time, not as detailed as some economists do, yet the idea is simple; you pay the same rate across the board for all people. Net result is, the more money you make, the more you actually will have to pay.

A 10% flat tax, for example, means if you make 1,000,000.00 you pay 100k in taxes.

Also, we need to make sure the special interests keep their hands off the flat taxes as well.

You know when they created the “Progressive Income Tax” they forgot to tell you that it was nothing but a “Punitive Income Tax”. If they really wanted a “Progressive” Income Tax then it would be a flat tax. But as we know the rich elite have been fighting the flat tax for centuries.

As a percentage of income the rich would pay more and the poor would pay less but we would all pay the same rate percentage wise. But because the “Progressive” Party only wants to take money from Conservative Rich and its enemies.

The fair tax, or national sales tax would never be allowed by the criminals in Washington. How would they be able to pander to groups of taxpayers when we all paid the same percentage? If “We the People” all had equal skin in the game, the politicians would lose the primary tool they all use against the citizens they supposedly represent.

Drop the IRS all together, implement a flat % national sales tax. This way everyone pays…the rich, the not so rich, welfare recipients. You buy a boat, you pay same % tax as if you buy toilet paper. But now for instance, criminals will pay. Example: drug dealers who don’t pay income tax but make lots of money, buy gold jewelry, gold teeth and fancy cars will pay tax too…welfare will also be putting money back in to support itself.

I disagree DEESBULL, a flat tax would be a tax on EVERYONE, meaning that the poor would now have to vote for an increase in taxes on themselves, making it much harder to raise the rate without huge resistance from the masses. It’s WAAYYY too easy to vote that we should raise taxes on the rich, because we’re not paying, but as soon as you have skin in the game, everything changes. I wonder how many of the “poor” would suddenly get a lot more annoyed at hearing about gov‘t waste when it’s their money’s going to pay for it. How many people scamming welfare/medicare/etc. would be turned in if their neighbors knew they were funding it? I think the ONLY solution that has any chance of working is an equal rate across the board. I also heard an interesting idea, what if when you did your taxes you could decide what percentage of your taxes go to different “pots.” So if you don’t like the military, then fine, put all your money to the EPA, education, etc, and vice-versa if you support the military. The gov’t would find out really quick what programs the public supports, and which ones should be cut/reduced. Anyway, I thought it was a pretty good idea.

Nobody likes paying taxes no matter how much. Oprah should donate her money to Environmental or Peace charities to lower her taxes to the US War Machine.

It is indeed ironic. The thing is, despite how much I disagree with Oprah’s politics, I think she would do more good with her money than the government would. This is generally my reason to be against unreasonable taxes, people often have more legitimate uses for the money than the government (sending their kids to a good preschool, saving for their college education, paying the mortgage – and heck, providing for a better lifestyle for the kids and relatives).

Richer folks will either reinvest their money into business, which helps the economy thrive and creates new jobs, or puts their money into causes which they believe in, without the special interest interference of the government, not its bloated unaccountable bureaucracy.

Oprah’s support and adoration of Obama during the election cycle gained him plenty of votes, after all, Oprah is an icon for many woman who would love to live her life. That, and her unfair reporting of Katrina gave me cause to un-tevo her show and throw her mags in the trash when they arrived. If she has to pay increased taxes I’m sorry for her but she helped create the problem so take another shot of tequila and get over it.

That is why she won’t stay more than 6 months a year in her California Home, she would then owe California State tax. If she had to write a check for the Golden state, she would need sedatives. How will she feel next year paying the 66% increase for Illinois state tax. Bring Jack Daniels and hard drugs for that signing.

Be careful what you wish for you might find it comes true! Oprah you asked for Obama the man who said OUTLOUD that he was going to raise the taxes on those making over $250,000 (actually he lied everyone who makes an income will pay under Obama;s plan) and Oprah my dear you fall into that catagory now dont you. Amazing how you could spread that $100,000 around and do so much good if only you had the option of doing that rather than supporting the social agenda. Maybe next time Oprah you will vote from the checkbook rather than the heart.

Enjoy your hope and change…if you have any change left!

GONESURFIN, the only time they wake up is when it hits them in the pocket book. Dobbs, Franks, the others responsible for Fannie and Freddie, a class action lawsuit for lack of oversight that hits them personally would send a message to Congress loud and clear – don’t screw the American people!

Oprah lost all credibility when she threw 20 years of advocating for women under the bus for the cause of the color of Barack Obama’s skin.

Thanks, Oprah, for steering half of America to vote for the disastrous policies of this President… How’s all of that “Hope and Change” working for you now?

I guess the redistribution of wealth is A-Okay as long as it doesn’t come from her pocket…

I Agree with several posters here in that there needs to be a low flat tax for everyone. To make up the difference, charge sales tax on all non-essential items (exclude essential food items and water only, and lower tax rates on toiletries and other household goods). That way, if you want to keep your money or invest, no charge – when you purchase goods to sustain your life, no charge – if you want to go out and buy a carton of smokes and a box of twinkies with your welfare check, you get taxed just like everyone else. The rich would inevitably pay more in taxes due to extravagant purchases, and the poor would chip in for all the stuff they buy that aren’t necessities.

If Oprah wants to pay less taxes all she has to do is give her money to charity on a year to year basis and if an acredited charity her donation will be deductible. If she gave enough away she would pay no taxes.
If the tax code was changed to the flat tax which would be assessed when purchases are made, the IRS could be virtually eliminated and the tax coffers would benefit everytime anyone purchased anything. This would catch all of the people who either pay no taxes or minimal taxes now, i.e. protitutes, drug dealers and other criminals, people in the service industry who live, in large part, from tips received in the form of cash. No loopholes that all writeoffs to taxes would be allowed.
People could control the amount of tax they pay but buying less or buying smaller such as homes, automobiles etc etc.
Assuming a flat tax of 20 percent, 7 percent to the states and 13 percent to the feds benefits such as welfare and unemployment would have to increase by that twenty percent so recipients would be in the same net income position as they were before the change. Exceptions should apply to tobacco and alcohol with double the tax rate to cover costs of health and associated costs because of abuse of these products.
Social security and family allowances should be paid on the basis of a means test. The wealthy or high income families do not need nor should they receive such benefits. Social security should be considered insurance and those smart or fortunate enough to ensure a high quality of life for themselves should be thankful that they do not need that money.
Welfare and unemployment recipients should have to take work if they are physically able to do so. For every dollar that they earn at a job should reduce their welfare payment by $.50 cents so there is an incentive for them to work which there is not if their benefits are $1,500 per month and a job pays only $1,600 many people will stay home. In this scenario the recipient ends up with $2,350 and the taxpayer saves $750. Everybody wins and the recipient may get some self esteem back, get a better job and perhaps get off welfare/unemployment all together.
