Oprah‘s Audience Freaks Out Over ’Favorite Things’ Giveaway

Every year,* Oprah tapes an episode where she stages a massive audience giveaway. She calls it her “Favorite Things” episode, since she gives away her, well, favorite things. Audience members leave with thousands of dollars in prizes, which have included electronics, appliances, and even cars.

The catch is that the audience never knows when its coming. So that can only mean one thing: massive freak-outs, hyperventilating, and school-girl screams of joy. Below is a montage of such actions from this year’s “Favorite Things,” which aired yesterday and is the last one ever since Oprah is going off the air at the end of the season:

Here are the prizes the audience were losing it over, courtesy of Babble:

Phillip Stein limited edition Oprah 25th anniversary watch with 58 handset diamonds ($2,475)

Flannel Tory Tote ($250) and Reva Ballerina Flat ($195) by Tory Burch

Nikon D3100 Digital SLR camera ($700)

5-year Netflix membership

The Huffington Post has a slide show of all the prizes.

*Oprah canceled the episode last year and did a scaled-down version in 2008.

Yep she is stimulating the economy, the audience members have to pay the taxes. I think it is approximately 50%. And you know that she does not pay that much for these items because it is free advertising basically.

      Yes she is

In 1998, Winfrey created the Oprah’s Angel Network, a charity that supported charitable projects and provided grants to nonprofit organizations around the world. Oprah’s Angel Network raised more than $80,000,000 ($1 million of which was donated by Jon Bon Jovi). Winfrey personally covered all administrative costs associated with the charity, so 100% of all funds raised went to charity programs.

Winfrey’s show raises money through promotion of her public charity and she personally donates more of her own money to charity than any other show-business celebrity in America. In 2005 she became the first black person listed by Business Week as one of America’s 50 most generous philanthropists, having given an estimated $303 million. Winfrey was the 32nd most philanthropic. She has also been repeatedly ranked as the most philanthropic celebrity.

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Oprah created the Oprah Angel Network Katrina registry which raised more than $11 million for relief efforts. Winfrey personally gave $10 million to the cause.Homes were built in Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama before the one year anniversary of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Winfrey has also helped 250 African-American men continue or complete their education at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia.

Winfrey was the recipient of the first Bob Hope Humanitarian Award at the 2002 Emmy Awards for services to television and film. To celebrate two decades on national TV, and to thank her employees for their hard work, Winfrey took her staff and their families (1065 people in total) on vacation to Hawaii in the summer of 2006.

I hope she gave them a check to pay the taxes on all those fine presents since the IRS will soon be calling. And let’s think about how she earned all that money to do all those good deeds…..oh yes, it was the capitalist system that allowed her to make the big bucks, that afforded her the opportunity to own multiple houses and lots of toys. But then she turned on that system, altho she still rakes in the $$’s, and backed Obama (her choice). There are many people who give alot of money away to charities, that do deeds as meaningful as Oprah (like Glenn Beck) but don’t receive the pomp and circumstance that she does. I hope they all continue to make lots of money in their chosen profession (you know Glenn and Oprah basically do the same thing, their platforms are just different, not wrong, just different) and that others have the same opportunity to make their fortunes.

      13th –

What Is that in percentage terms? 1%, 10%, 40%? And what is the equivalent she tithes?

I’m more impressed with the family of 5 making less than 50K per year and tithing 10% regularly, while still giving generously to their neighbors.

It’s easy when you have it…show me those who have little and give great percentages…then, I’ll be impressed.

Excuse me—we don’t have to agree with Oprah–there’s a lot that she believes that I reject—HOWEVER—having said that–charity is charity….this is something that brings pure joy to her audience and probably to her. She can be generous if she wants to and we shouldn’t snidely sit by and pass judgement just because we might not like some things she does. If I had a platform like she does and money like she does—I would hope to be able to do these kind of things for others as well…..find something else worth actually getting upset about and just be happy for the people who were given these amazing gifts. Oprah might have been the vessel–but God gets the credit for blessing these folks.

No this is not charity… that is like saying you or I are charity cases, while we type on our phones or computers…Charity fills a need and I bet not a one in that audience NEEDED a $3,650 3D TV set.

I assume the Taxes on that stuff will be paid by the audience member??
