O‘Reilly Has Tense Exchange With Matt Lauer on ’Today‘ Over Whitney Houston’s Drug Use

Bill O’Reilly has never been one to let the media off easy, and Thursday morning was no different.

Bill OReilly and Matt Lauer Argue Over Whitney Houston on NBC Today Show

During an interview with Matt Lauer on NBC’s “Today” show, O‘Reilly let loose on Lauer when Lauer challenged the Fox News host’s comments about Whitney Houston’s death. O‘Reilly has taken the position that Whitney Houston’s years of drug abuse amounted to her “wanting to kill herself,” while Lauer made the point that some are slaves to addiction.

“I don’t believe that anyone is a slave to addiction,” O’Reilly said. “I believe it is a disease, it’s a mental disease. But you have free will and you can get through the disease as millions of people have chosen to do.”

“We the media looked the other way on Whitney Houston,” he added later. “Everyone knew she was a drug addict for two decades.”

Lauer went on to say that he‘s seen several media reports detailing Houston’s addiction, but O’Reilly responded by saying those were mainly sensationalized stories meant to exploit the star, and that the media does not do a good job of holding drug users accountable. But Lauer didn’t back down, and that’s when things took off.

    Matt Lauer=Useless *******. O’reilly is right with his description of WH. Whitney Houston was a junkie, no different then the millions of dope addicted poor throughout this country. She just happened to be a junkie with money. Why do we glorify some loser who pissed her life down the latrine? Becasue it’s politically correct and insensitive to respond like Bill did. His favorite line is “am I right?’ and the 2nd favorite is “tell me where I’m wrong”…. After that it’s the smug holier than thou look and the phrase, “I’m a simple man”.

      Yes, it is true that Miss Houston, Michael Jackson, John Belushi, Jimi Hendrix, ad infinitum; have destroyed their lives with drugs. I truly have tried, but have never been able to understand the concept of being addicted to anything other than breathing. It is said that many folks have addictive personalities, if this is true and there is a family history of addiction. This does not mitigate but enhances our failure as “fans” to require these roll models to our children and grandchildren to maintain themselves in recognition of the influence they may have on some folks.

      I never got Lauer (or Couric). I know he thinks he’s smarter than GOD, but he’s just a morning hack.

      I’m amazed at the INSENSITIVITY of CHRISTIE by lowering the NJ Flags half staff. I agree with the NJ mother of fallen soldier who says “WHAT????” I think, now, that the reason Christie is so fat…I mean FAT…is because he has emotional instability of some type ….very emotional guy…He needs a few years to come to grips with growing up (He’s still very young) having learned how to give quick answers when confronted…but he hasn’t learned to make best judgement calls…yet. The weight and the lack of reasonable judgement go hand in hand. It takes time. HE owes the Fallen Soldier’s families of NJ an Apology and should probably have a “NJ HONORS it‘s FALLEN SOLDIER’S DAY” now and very soon.

      I am libertarian on many issues. But when it comes to drugs I’m with Bill and I think people that are pooh poohing drug use and attempting to get it legalized are MORONS. What the hell is wrong with people? Victimless crime? Tell that to the MILLIONS that have died because of the drug trade and drug use in just the last 50 years. Tell that the families of people that have lost loved ones.

      It shouldn’t be legal to commit suicide. It shouldn’t be legal to murder. It shouldn’t be legal to poison yourself with illegal drugs. It shouldn’t be legal to sell poison to others so that they can poison themselves.

      @PATHENRY: I agree, Christie shouldn’t be lowering flags to half staff for Houston or any other celebrity. That honor is reserved for those that serve the country and either die doing so or have made such a positive impact that decorum dictates them being honored.

The youth of Iran was screaming out and being killed or trampled by Iran’s regime and the MSM ignored it in favor of sensationalizing what happened to Jackson.     So is Matt Laurer going to give every drug addict that you see on the street “a slave to addiction,” you and I both know he wouldn’t – he would not even care what was said about them- all this is amounting to is a celebrity of high star status and he does not want to be the one to say “why did she do this to herself” Yes she was talented, yes she was amazing but such a gift that she was given- wasted– for what – DRUGS! When are we going to go after the doctors who are not monitoring how often they are refilling medications- how about bogus names so they can get more drugs- there are a lot of people to blame in this case- but as much as I do not always agree with Bill O’Reilly- he has a point– maybe it came across to harsh too soon but I have dealt with drug addicts in my family- and until they want help- you can not help them- so stop being enablers to them – call it what it is- WRONG!

      with drugs/alcohol…there is NEVER too soon, too strong….Whitney was adored by the public/press and got away with murder, her own…
      she did this intentionally…no one forced her to be an addict..
      the whole thing concerns me because the public needs to see these things in the clear light of day and not put these people on a pedestal…especially our young people.

    I am no longer an O‘Reilly fan because I think he is too arrogant to admit that Glenn has had it right all along and therefore will never be brave enough to stand up for what’s right because it will jeopardize his star status.
    However, on this point he is absolutely correct. The media does wink-wink and use the tragic tales of celebrity drug and alcohol abuse as fodder to spice up their daily hum-drum offerings.
    Addiction is a death-wish and these stars are not to be pitied. They need a lot of reality therapy from a news media which makes them social outcasts – like they’ve done so brutally with smokers.

      Except O’reilly likes the way Singapore handles their drug problem. They can grab anyone at anytime and drug test them. If you test positive, you are whisked away, no trial, to drug prison. People who sell drugs are killed. O’reilly must not like the Constitution very much.

    My cousin was a drug user. A heavy drug user. One night, he and a friend were sitting on the front porch (yes this is the south) and his friend went to the store. When the friend returned, my cousin was dead. How? Years of drug use lead to a very weak heart. All it took was a little more then his heart could handle. So he had a little more than he could handle and it killed him.

    How does this relate to Whitney? Years of drug use weakened her body. She got into a warm bath and that causes your heart to race a little bit. A racing, weak heart can cause a heart attack. My belief is she had a heart attack and then sank in the bathtub.

    The coroner’s report will say she died of heart failure. My belief it is heart failure due to years of drug abuse.

    That’s my story and I am sticking to it.

    I would normally agree that Hannity and O’Reilly are in the same boat. However, I’ve been listening to Hannity lately (won‘t watch O’Reilly any more) and Hannity at least is trying to give equal time to all the candidates. He seems to truely want to give everyone a voice and allows liberals to call in and actually tries to have a logical conversation with them (impossible in my opinion but he believes in giving people an equal opportunity which I can totally respect.) O’Reilly on the other hand does just seem to be a media whore. He refuses to admit the obvious when it‘s staring him in the face that our President definitely has an alterior motive with all of his policies and he isn’t just incompitent. Supremely arrogant yes but not incompitent. He knows what he wants and is going after it. He just can‘t tell the american public yet because we won’t buy what he’s selling (yet.) O‘Reilly doesn’t want to entertain these thoughts until everyone else has and it’s staring him in the face. I believe that Beck, Limbaugh, Hannity, Savage all really do have the American future in their hearts to help. All still businessmen but at least with their hearts in the right place (as far as I can see, I could be dead wrong as that has happened in the past and I’m not God so I do make mistakes.) Just my humble opinion I don‘t think Hannity deserves to be put in the same category as O’Reilly who at this point has lost my respect and confidence. Sorry O’Reilly I liked

      You are so correct. Orelliy is just looking to retire at the top and too be looked at as a idol. My dad is a big Oreilly fan and he is even starting too see it. And for Obama, Ive been saying it for years that he has an agenda to bring down America in order to induce chaos and to transform this nation to a communist one. there is no way he can be this ignorant. No way this is all a coinceidence or someone with a good heart just making the wrong decisions. I believe that when the truth hits the masses it will be too late.

      The sign will be when Oreilly finally admits it. Be prepared because if and when that day comes are days will be numbered. It will hit the masses like a ton of ******. Kind of like a theif in the night. Just know that the sign I feel will be when Oreilly admits Obama is and has a destructive agenda for us. Like I said when that time hits be ready to lock and load and have plenty of food ready for the long hall. Take no man at his word and only trust real conservatives who are ready to put up a fight. All others in my opinion can go straight to hell because most likely those are the ones that put us in this volunerable situation. I surely hope I am wrong. But the facts, evidence and my gut feeling tells me I’m alot more right then wrong. May the blessing of Jesus be with all with open hearts and eyes.

    She had the chance just like anyone else to get help. We all have demons and we all have to either address them or continue on the same journey. She is no hero and she is no victim. Western medicine is not longer the answer. Doctors over medicate daily. It is absurd to demand their records. We all know they are looking for someone else to blame. This is what we do in our society now find someone else to point the finger towards. She took the drugs, she drank the booze she is responsible for her life and the end of it. It is tragic and sad but we have got to stop blaming other people for our actions and decisions. I agree with Bill in the fact we all knew she was a drug addict not a surprise. She didn’t have it to get the help and change. No question it is hard to do but millions do it every day

    Bravo to Bill O’Reilly. No one could have explained this better! Too many in the media are making Whitney out to be a victim of addiction. While Matt Lauer thinks that shining a light on her problems is all that the media need to without so much as making it about free will and in a judgemental capacity they are not helping the situation with others. The media does a Willy Nelson wink wink with the drug use in hollywood and then when something happens tragicly they call it a disease as if the star had no will to change or counter her addiction. It is time that light is shown in clear broad daylight and not the hollywood glamour lights. It may make some of these celebrities think about their problem and get help to counter it. A disease is something you have no control over…like cancer. Drugs are a choice that can become a very difficult situation to push yourself out of ….requiring enormous free will……but it is ultimately up to the individual to do it. If the media casts a glowing light instead of a hard and judgemental bright light they are not covering this in a way that is helpful to those with the addiction.

      He may never admit he is wrong but he is right about this. Tough love is the only thing that is going to move these addicts to doing something about the situation they created for themselves. Standing by and watching it and reporting it is not going to move this anywhere. It is voyeurism which may get viewers but won’t help the situation. To may it taboo will help some. To shed a light of reality may help some. Whitney is responsible ultimately for her own destruction.

      I actually agree with you. He should be highlighting what Ron Paul says about the fed and what his positions are just as equally as the other candidates. We need Ron Paul’s message. Even though I disagree with making drugs legal and cannot wholeheartedly embrace his foreign policy beliefs alot of what his message needs to be out there. Alot of what he is saying needs to be said…..especially what he has said about the Fed and the fact that we do not need to be nation building and policing the world.       Bill lost my viewership, and respect, last year, when he began telling us who was electable and who wasn’t. Fair and balanced, no more. Opinionated, or worse, (paid off, controlled ???) just like the rest of them. I also cancelled my tv network service because all there was to watch were unfo-mercials, idiotic movies, misinformation and propaganda. Not worth my time or money anymore.

    How about some reporting on some issues that have real substance like the countless ways federal, state and local goverments have been corrupted and what can be done about it; holding politicians accountable.

    Once he started appearing on The View, I stopped watching him because I realized it was more important for him to be an entertainer than an investigative reporter.

      I really perked up and noticed his rude, mean treatment of Beck when he would appear on the factor…it was a down hill ride for BOR…he seems to be afraid to offend the left on his show… we don’t watch it much anymore, infact we feel that way about the whole FOX network…except Kelly’s show..

      .oh yes, the very talented singer that gave her God given talent over to a drug dealer 15 years ago..and chose not to reclaim it..
      Her family could use this opportuity to do public service announcements using her death as a center point…and help open rehab centers for the every day person .
      I hope they do not waste this opportunity for good…I realize it would be a change… using her name and talent for something constructive

    Houston was a drug user who could sing. She had the world by the balls. Never should she be celebrated and never should a sitting, fake conservative, governor honor a drug user by lowering the state flag.

    The two of them put together would not equal one brain. A Liberal and a Progressive that thinks he is a Conservative….Both of them make me puke…

    An addict is an addict. I have now pity other than saying it is a pity she wasted her talent by using drugs. But the weak fail and the strong survive. It is what freedom minus responsibility does to you…

    Although drug addiction is a terrible thing, it is ultimately an individual’s personal responsibility. Some seem to thing that declaring addiction to drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or whatever substance, is a disease it somehow removes all responsibility for the addiction from the individual. It is very sad, but still her fault.

      I believe those who say addictions are a disease and not the fault of the addict are really justifying their own bad habits that they do not want to take responsibity for. It is easier to continue to indulge as long as you are able to point the finger at someone else or some other reason than your own weakness of character and decision to swallow, pop, shoot, smoke, drink, snort, huff, or however you choose to injest, whether it came from a doctor or not.

      What killed her, was what her doctor prescribed her. Depression meds, pain killers, sleeping pills. Once you take them and drink with it. You could end up sleeping and never waking up. Sadly to say, but the legal drugs are more harmful than the illegal drugs.

    O’Reilly doesn’t really seem to stand for anything, he just makes a living having “heated exchanges” with people that conservatives don’t like. I’m sorry Whitney died like that but really, we have bigger problems to worry about and Bill spent the first 2 years of Obama’s presidency trying to cover for him.

      THE_JERK…What bugs me the most about Hannity is his dishonesty. I don’t mind honest commentary…right or left. But Hannity takes lying to whole new level. I have seen him doctor quotes or blatantly misquote people, particularly Obama, to the point where it far exceeds any standard pf fairness.

      Bill is only interested in ratings. He will not criticize any one so that he can book them on his show. He laid off Obama in spite of the harm that Barry is doing to the country. In the end his interview was very soft ball. If he offers any criticism is starts with “I don’t have anything against president Obama but”
      So much for fair and balanced! Beck, Miller and Laura Ingram all show impatience with the self- absorbed bully!

      Fuzzy, he really doesn’t even get big names on his show anymore, they all avoid him. Hannity has a lot of heavy hitters in the following hour. It must drive Bill O. nuts.
