Oreo Cookies Go Gay on Facebook

Oreo Facebook Post in Favor of Gay Pride Draws Boycotts and Internet SupportThis image was posted yesterday on Facebook to the Oreo fan page, apparently by representatives of the company that makes the “world’s favorite cookie.” While the cookie depicted is not available for consumption, this decision by representatives of such an iconic snack to support gay pride has prompted (perhaps unsurprisingly) quite a high level of controversy. The Guardian reports:

While most commenters were in support of the multi-coloured equal rights cookie, others disagreed with Oreo’s tolerant stance, some even threatening a biscuit-boycott.

“This is absolutely disgusting,” opined DeseanĀ Washington. “Your attempt to ‘normalize’ the behaviour of homosexuals has cost you a customer.”

Steven Osoria was another to express displeasure with the post, which provoked such a violent response that he had decided he was “never eating an oreo ever again”.

Facebook user Steve Permar, whose interests on the site include “Sarah Palin” and “I Love Jesus”, posted: “Guess I won‘t be buying oreo’s [sic] anymore”, while Mike Wirth declared the Oreo post was evidence of “more homosexuality shoved down our throats”.

Not that all the response was negative. This image, taken from a petition at change.org, shows that some people are more upset that the rainbow cookie isn’t real than about the message it implies:

Oreo Facebook Post in Favor of Gay Pride Draws Boycotts and Internet SupportThe petition, set up by gay pride activists, lists the following reasons for wanting the cookie to be made real:

It’s important for so many reasons, with the main two being:
1. Gays deserve equal rights
2. It looks DELICIOUS
Please sign this and tell Nabisco that you want to see the 7-layer “Gay Oreo” on store shelves soon!

Meanwhile, viral internet site Reddit designed an image pointing out something problematic about the “rush to boycott” impulse typified by the reaction to this cookie:

Oreo Facebook Post in Favor of Gay Pride Draws Boycotts and Internet Support

Would you eat that cookie? Or are you going to boycott Kraft?

Well, this is a good way to make people lose weight. I’m sure lots of people will stop buying their cookies, which are fattening and bad for everyone, just because of this stupid rainbow cookie mistake.

Ok so encouraging one foolish lifestyle isn‘t enough but now we’re going to combine it with the obesity of the land as well. Incase I‘m not being clear what i’m saying is. It‘s bad enough that the majority of them can’t be gay without having to flaunt it all around, but now we’re going to make them fat too. This is Marvelous

I totally agree about politicizing a cookie, Lwestmoreland40, and I wrote to Nabisco/Kraft and said so. I didn’t get into the issue of who was politicizing the cookie, since a Muslim version would be equally offensive to me.

And someone mentioned Arizona tea and Skittles, which were politicized during the Trayvon Martin demonstrations. I’d be interested to know if the spike in sales that happened leveled off after all the protests died down.

Don’t forget to add Visa, Mastercard and Discover. And most major lenders. And Google and Yahoo (or sites that use their libraries or analytics, like The Blaze and WND). Make sure your web traffic doesn’t cross any Cisco servers, or travel down any 3M cables. Don’t read any PDFs or watch any flash videos online. Make sure none of your personal information is stored in an Oracle database. Don’t use any Java programs. You might as well stay away from all Apache projects, too, because we know what a bunch of godless homos those open source people are.

    I don’t have a problem boycotting Kraft.
They make products that make you fat anyway

And — THANKS for making a list for me of companies to boycott.

Oh – speaking on California Pizza Kitchen – WATCH WHAT THEY CHARGE YOU. They charged us for THREE MEALS when we only ordered TWO meals. And we didn’t catch it until we went home. …. kind of hard to go back the next day and complain — so there goes $25 right down the toilet. The waiter spilled a drink and took about 10 minutes to clean it up…. ignored us most of the night. I will NEVER go back there again.

Sure – Boycott Kraft. No problem with that.

    Consider it a done deal.

Gonzo – If you have an Aldi’s grocery store in your area, they make a generic variety of almost all of those items listed. And most of them you wouldn’t even know the difference (although if you are an Oreo aficionado, then you’ll be a little disappointed – but you get used to it). It feels good and spiritually burdenless not to contribute to their agenda.

Even here in the USA, they are currently having to pay over 200 store managers for time worked that the managers worked and never got paid for until they took ALDI to court. I just trimmed five large trees in 101 degree temperature. Swept the roof off and now I’m going for a ten mile ride on a 24 speed Motobecane road bike. Then I’m going to melt some lead down for 357 bullets. Afterwards, I’ll chop the wood debris into six foot sections and tie it up. It covers a 24 x 12 foot area. Six feet tall. I’m 59 years old. And won’t ever die of natural causes. I‘ll have to be run over by a Mac truck and even then I’d just be mad again. I squeeze Maple trees for syrup. My car knows it better ride nicely or I’d tear the engine out of it and steal two horses, one for each foot to go to the worst Walmart in existence for a piece of barbed wire for a belt. People sweat from the body heat around me. I crushed two molars and let the dentist give me a root canal without pain killers. All I have to do is threaten my computer and it automatically comes here to the baddest site on the internet. Where I am. Where I’m going to stay. And you’re stuck with me. Forever.
