‘Historic Upset’: Orrin Hatch Forced Into Primary Fight After Failing to Secure GOP Nomination

Utah Republicans denied U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch a clear path to a seventh and final term Saturday, forcing the 78-year-old lawmaker into a June primary with 37-year-old former state Sen. Dan Liljenquist.
Hatch fell short of the outright nomination by fewer than three dozen votes from the nearly 4,000 delegates at the party convention.
In a matter of weeks, Hatch turned the question of whether he would survive the convention into a question of whether he would reach the 60 percent threshold to earn the nomination. Despite the setback, Hatch holds a significant fundraising edge in what has become the stiffest challenge since his election to the Senate in 1976.
“It is time for a new generation of leaders…We know it to our bones,” his competitor Dan Liljenquist remarked.
“No one senator is too big to fail…No one senator is too important to lose.”
This year’s race essentially began in 2010, when former Utah Sen. Bob Bennett was ousted by delegates fueled by tea party politics.
Hatch reportedly remarked: “These people are not conservatives. They’re not Republicans…They’re radical libertarians and I’m doggone offended by it.”
“I despise these people, and I’m not the guy you come in and dump on without getting punched in the mouth,” he continued.
Immediately recognizing the challenge he would likely face from such groups, Hatch launched one of the most well-organized and expensive campaigns in the state’s history. Since the beginning of 2011, he has spent more than $5 million – and he still has $3 million to spend on a primary.
Hatch has also shifted his rhetoric to the right over the past two years to address the claims that he was not conservative enough (probably not a good strategy to admit you “despise” your constituents).
FreedomWorks has called the outcome “a historic upset,“ describing Liljenquist as ”an energetic, conservative underdog.”
“Utahns have spoken today, and their message is clear: it’s time for a change,” Russ Walker, national political director for FreedomWorks for America, declared.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Judging from this grudging statement, it seems that Orrin Hatch mustn’t like the concepts of liberty all that well. It looks as if the old Senator has gotten quite comfortable with the status quo the crooked GOP and DNC establishments has been maintaining for decades. After having spent 36 years in the Senate, I think it’s way past time for Orrin to retire from office…PERMANENTLY.

Here in Oklahoma we will lose Tom Colburn to term limits – Republicans and Democrats can‘t wait long enough since he’s a thorn in both sides. We would like to almost change the law for one execption but that won’t work. Remember they almost did it for Rudi after 9/11. Timmy was the only man that could save us in 2009, we had to overlook the fact that he cheated on his taxes – yet he’s over us at Treasury. Posted on April 23, 2012 at 6:54amThere are a lot of uninformed accusations and smears of Hatch here. He’s a good and decent man and has served well. There are things he could have done differently, but a Republican Senator in a Democratic Senate has to walk a difficult tightrope between being in a position to influence the outcome for better and not being in a position to do anything at all. The guy who votes a knee-jerk “no” to everything that comes up is never going to be in a position to change anything. I don’t agree with everything he did, but I most certainly don’t attribute it to him being evil or stupid or a RINO.
Having said that, I voted for Dan Liljenquist at the convention. I think Hatch is tired, his brain has been fogged by the toxic DC environment, and Dan is a potential rock star of change – he is unbelievably talented and focused.

Posted on April 23, 2012 at 7:09amI wouldn’t give the Tea Party that much credit. The delegates here got a ton of literature from Freedom Works, for example, but it contained a lot of obvious crap. It wasn’t worth reading because it had way too much spin. My experience is that none of the material disseminated by out-of-state organizations, whether anti-Hatch, pro-Hatch, anti-Liljenquist, or pro-Liljenquist, was fully truthful or factual, and that was obvious to those who took the time to do some research and who talked face-to-face with the candidates.
A lot of us, as delegates, went into the process with an open mind. Many of us concluded that Dan Liljenquist will be a more effective agent for change than would be Orrin Hatch.
Report Post »As a previous commenter noted, the Utah caucus system puts a small number of delegates in a position where we can get beyond the sound bites and spin. That’s what we did. Now that it’s going to a primary, Hatch is in the driver’s seat. It will take a heck of a campaign by Liljenquist to win.

Worse – they were handed a huge gift in ‘10 via the energized Tea Party GOPers, but warned: “You have not received a mandate and you are still ON PROBATION!” They didn’t listen and squandered the gift.

Posted on April 21, 2012 at 9:41pmLibertarians today, compared to those when the movement was gaining momentum as a respite to the Liberal party circa 1975 ~ thereby garnering Reagan’s attention briefly ~ are as crooked as they come. They are routinely bought and sold across party lines (favoring Clinton one cycle, hugs and kisses to Bush the next); degrading of the Constitution to suit their flights of fancy (claiming Americans must advocate isolationism as if Washington’s farewell speech somehow penned such “hands-off” rhetoric in invisible ink through an amendment no one can find); and routinely racist, bigoted morons who believe their millions banked off-shore somehow preclude them from practicing moral behaviors.
Today’s (Ron Paul) Libertarians are not the “Libertarian-Conservatives” Reagan once praised.
Through the 60s, as the Liberal Party gained one black eye after another, another name came up for debate… Libertarians. ‘We can do as we wish, vote how we want, love the left, hate the right; change gears as the winds blow, hell we can even sell ourselves as socially liberal, politically conservative.
One should always remember and recognize that Reagan held fault with many in the Libertarian party due to their socialist tendancies.
Report Post »TIME_2_END_THE_PAUL_CAMPAIGN_IN_12
Posted on April 21, 2012 at 9:49pmit is these new Libertarians whom require a great deal of exposure. We now ~again~ we have Ron Paul who stands in the town square and preaches to the masses from atop his soap-box. One who rails against the government, preaching for absolutely zero tolerance of any governmental bodies ~ be those in the arenas of taxation, the military, foreign relations, energy ~ even to the most basic levels as required for national security or the stability of health and human services. The Libertarians of today advocate near-anarchy-like conditions between populace and government ~ a condition precisely as those promoted by the likes of Lenin, and Stalin his successor.
As the Left has pulled further left, and some on the Right further right, we’ve all come to realize that Moderate is a misnomer. And it’s time to understand, too, that Libertarians, lost in a sea of “nearly-theres” and “could-have-beens” have become dangerously radical towards a goal of recognition. Their hands are every bit as open as any other Abramoff sell-out. Their records prove it. It’s time we focus on a candidate Reagan would have us to and it ain’t Ron Paul.

Considering Colonel Macgregors credentials and all I’ve heard and read from him, (in addition to the fact that he would never stoop to posting hateful, often childish, and usually untrue comments on a web blog), I find it hilariously ironic that YOU can’t take HIM seriously.
And since, according to you, “you are who you align yourself with”, (and you consider Ron Paul a racist because of some mildly offensive comments – by others – in old newsletters), then you must also be a racist, because you have aligned yourself (by your own logic) with many other Ron Paul haters on The Blaze, and I’ve seen some incredibly racist posts from some of the Ron Paul haters here.

Posted on April 22, 2012 at 12:38amGetting back to the point…
Libertarians destroy the Constitution to suit their agendas. For example, read Ron Paul’s “The Revolution”. He uses Washington’s Farewell Address to lay claim our Founding Father’s demanded isolationism and that to ignore such a claim Americans may as well just flush the entire Constitution down the toilet. Washington’s address was 20 years removed from the Constitution’s signing and 5 years removed from the Barbary Wars. Read his positions on the issues; another strange and convoluted attempt to marry the Constitution and his demands for compassion for Jihadists. The man wants America to return land to the very people who blew up the towers on 9/11… claiming it’s the fault of the United States we were attacked. And he’s not the only Libertarian espousing these views.
In short, the links between Socialists and modern day Libertarians are many and frightening. Reagan saw it 35 years ago.

Posted on April 22, 2012 at 7:27pmTime,
By your own logic, you are aligned with those who share your political views. These are your rules, not mine. So – using your rules, you must be a racist like some of your fellow haters on The Blaze. You can‘t get away with using this type of logic to indict Ron Paul and all those who support his candidacy and then say that the alignment rule doesn’t apply to yourself.
While we’re playing your alignment game, the fact that you so adamantly oppose Austrian Economists like Mises, Rothbard, and Paul, it seems that you are aligning yourself with the Keynesian Economists (including Obama) and of course that must also mean that you are just like John Maynard Keynes. Talk about skeletons in the closet.
If these examples seem silly to you, it shows just how ridiculous you look when you make the same type of associations.
You are so full of distortions and nonsense, I think that your strategy is to try to overwhelm with too many lies to address. Socialism and libertarianism have so many links? Really? These ideologies are polar opposites. You are either ignorant or lying. Isolationism? There is a big difference between isolationism and non-intervention, and it has been clearly explained ad nauseum. If you still call Paul an isolationist, you are either ignorant or lying. Calling Murray Rothbard a racist is either ignorant or lying. Anyone who has read and/or listened to Rothbard knows where these accusations come from and also knows that they are not true.

Posted on April 22, 2012 at 9:18pmTime_2 is a liberal in disguise here, have you ever followed his posts? He must hate Ronald Reagan also:
“I believe the very heart and soul of conservatism is libertarianism. I think conservatism is really a misnomer just as liberalism is a misnomer for the liberals – if we were back in the days of the Revolution, so-called conservatives today would be the Liberals and the liberals would be the Tories. The basis of conservatism is a desire for less government interference or less centralized authority or more individual freedom and this is a pretty general description also of what libertarianism is.”
