Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinjad was reportedly slapped in the face by Revolutionary Guard Chief of Staff Mohammed Ali Jafari, according to a recently released cable obtained by WikiLeaks.
According to the cable, Ahmadinejad took a “liberal” position on Iran’s opposition protests which surprised the security council. According to the cable, the Iranian president warned that the country’s people felt “suffocated” and that more personal freedoms — including more freedom for the press — may help to defuse tensions in Tehran.
But the talk of freedoms apparently angered Chief of Staff Jafari. The Feb. 11, 2010, cable reads:
According to source, Ahmedinejad’s statements infuriated Revolutionary Guard Chief of Staff Mohammed Ali Jafari, who exclaimed “You are wrong! (In fact) it is YOU who created this mess! And now you say give more freedom to the press?!” Source said that Jafarli then slapped Ahmedinejad in the face, causing an uproar and an immediate call for a break in the meeting, which was never resumed.
Source said that SNSC did not meet again for another two weeks, after Ayatollah Janati succesfully acted as a “peacemaker” between Jafarli and Ahmedinejad. Source added that the break in the SNSC meeting, but not the slap that caused it, has made its way on to some Iranian blogs.

Posted on January 4, 2011 at 5:16amYou cannot be for “free speech” and then deny wikileaks.
The culprit is the leak-er, while it is also a crime to possess US state secrets – the offended state can take matters into their own hands. or pursue the expositor.
I’m left to wonder a few things: 1) can you imagine a leak like this during the cold war? 2) how does a lowly PFC have access to sensitive upper-level security information? and finally; 3) Odd that no real damning or even credible cables has been presented tarnishing/implicating/revealing China to be anything more than “frightened” by Ms. Pelosi…our own Camilla Parker Bowles….?
Odd, don’t you think?
A regime that forced down a U.S. military plane for “flying too close to their border” when they were well within an allies airspace, was caught attempting espionage against America, and fuels armed conflicts around the world with enemies of America – isn’t named in ANY damning wikileaks?
Oh yeah, I forgot, that all actually happened – it just happened under the LAST Republican administration. The current occupier identifies more with Mao than he does Monroe…
Stop looking at the silly private – he’s just the Lee Harvey Oswald of the wikileaks story. Any day now I expect Jak Luby to cause him to stop “leaking” all over…already….
lol.

Posted on January 4, 2011 at 7:33amVox, There were leaks during the cold war as bad, and argueably worse, than what came out recently. There wasn’t, however, an internet and a world community ready and willing to deseminate the info. Leaks were much, much easier to tamp down and contain in those days.
Your second question is a great one, that I would love to see answered. Generally a PFC doesn’t have much in the way of clearance. I wondered the same thing when the story broke. Then, too, most of what‘s come out hasn’t been all that damning. I hope we eventually get an answer.
The China Question: interesting. Let’s see.

Posted on January 4, 2011 at 5:05amTheatrics ! This is nothing but a staged event released to the Iranian media to make Amadinejad look moderate. This supposedly happened about the time of the open protests in the streets of Tehran last year. It’s just another, ” the right hand doesn’t know what the left hand is doing” sort of thing. Nothing has changed politically in Iran. It’s still a country that threatens security and safety of the world with a nuclar bomb capability, now or in the very near future. What I don‘t understand is why the democratic world is sitting back and giving Iran a free hand to pursue it’s nuclear program that will have tremendous military capabilities.

Posted on January 4, 2011 at 3:09amThis particular leak may, in some small way, help the people of Iran but, may also add to the problems they have already. Having this leak out in the world press will probably inspire Iran’s tyrannical leadership to drive their communications further underground.

Posted on January 4, 2011 at 2:49amAhmadinjad was actually quite liberal when he was mayor of Tehran and a no name politically in Iran (or at least not a national office holder). It was not until he ran for President that he became uber-conservative in terms of adhering strictly to the Ayatollah’s will. But that‘s an artifice of the entire religious and political institutions of that country being intermingled and the Ayatollah having his hand so far up Ahmadinijad’s pooper. Just an example of what happens when you have state Establishment of religion–this is EXACTLY the kind of crap Madison and Jefferson warned about and why Rhode Island exists.

It is a dilemma! I have no qualms with respecting the privacy, and thus secrecy, of others, or to extend such privilege to families, businesses, religions, governments, militaries. Privacy/Secrecy is an inherent quality of individuality.
It is a dilemma! I have no qualms with appreciating transparency, and thus the sacrifice of secrecy, to others, or to extend such to families, businesses, religions, governments, militaries. Transparency is an inherent quality of relationships and culture.
The truth is, we are culturally oriented individuals, always weaving the complexities of secrecy and transparency.
To tell, or not to tell, is an ongoing dilemma. To know or not to know, is that a dilemma or a blessing? Is learning truth, good or bad? Quite honestly, it is hard for me to put ‘truth’ into any formula that leads to harm, to evil. Truth may hurt, but will not the pain, if heeded, ultimately find lasting benefits?
Here in America, we cry for truth, even if it is delivered by Congressional investigation. Does method of delivery make lies, out of truth, or defines the value of the truth, or determine the privilege to know? Do not we all have an obligation to learn fully about our world? Does not God expose the shadows? Can I not, ought I not, perceive any and all truth coming my ways as a gift from God? He does know it all. In His eternal eyes, whatever is hidden, is only a temporary mirage for us. Is this thread of truth out of Iran a miracle? Does God still, today, confound the enemies of His people? Because of this, perhaps some powerful forces on this continent will shrink a bit from their foolishness, fearing exposure. Perhaps some who hoard secrets, will be embolden to shed the light. These are fearful days, for those who hide much.
