Outcry After Parents Learn English Teacher By Day Is Erotica Author By Night

The Daily Mail reports that an English teacher at a Middleburg, Pennsylvania high school has a much racier job when she’s outside the classroom – and some parents are none to pleased with the revelation:

Outcry After Parents Learn English Teacher By Day Is Erotica Author By NightA group of high school parents have complained to their local education board after discovering a quiet English teacher writes racy, erotic novels when she’s not working with their children.

They are asking that the board investigates the matter and presents Judy Buranich with a choice: either quit teaching or quit writing the books.

Mrs Buranich has taught at the Midd West High School in Middleburg, Pennsylvania, for nearly 25 years.

But recently parents and students found out that outside of class she is Judy Mays, author of titles such as A Breath of Heat, Undercover Heat, and Rednecks ‘N’ Romance.

The books, which feature aliens, vampires and werewolves, are freely available at web sites such as Amazon.com and at book chain stores such as Waldenbooks.

But for the parents, the racy novels are just a little too racy.

Have a gander at some samples of her work:

Scranton’s WNEP-TV talked with parents and students at the school:

Parent Wendy Apple has a son in 10th grade at Midd West High School in Middleburg. His English teacher’s name is Judy Buranich. Apple said she recently found out that after school Buranich has a second job; she writes erotic romance novels.

“Now my son knows so how is he thinking when he’s sitting in her class knowing what she does on the side,” Apple said. She added she found all of the information on the internet. Apple said Buranich writes under the pen name Judy Mays.

If you go to Judy May‘s website she said she’s disguised as a mild-mannered tenth grade English teacher in a small public high school. If you want to get in contact with her you are asked to write to a post office box in Selinsgrove.

A photograph of Buranich matches a YouTube interview in which she talks about her novels.

Parent Deanna Stepp said the evidence is clear. “She is teaching children that are under the age of 18 and definitely the books that she is writing are adult books. I think she needs to make a decision as to what she wants to do. Either be a school teacher or author,” Stepp said.

“I was shocked. If you are a teacher you shouldn’t be doing that,” said former student Shanette Apple.

“I was sort of shocked.Sitting in her class I had no idea. She is a good teacher but I had no idea what was going on behind the scenes,” said former student Drew Hollenbach.

So what parent told the kids about her writing? She is not harming her students so the parents should just calm down a little on this. She knows how to write so she should be a good teacher on the subject.

What exactly has she done wrong? She hasn’t harmed anyone or stolen anything. So she does adult stuff at home. She doesn’t do it in the classroom? Should all teachers that have sex on their own time, in their own home be fired for teaching children while on the job. I believe there is a distinct seperation of personal life versus job life here. The parents should be alot more outraged at the teachers & administrators that are teaching our kids what to think instead of how to think.

@ColoradoDad: Would you be okay if the teacher was a pedophile on his/her own time? Just asking? To me, when they take the position of a teacher which is an instructor by words and actions, they accept a more stringent responsibility to set a proper example. Please don’t allow these people to influence our children more than they already do.

I couldn’t agree more. Most of us read the blaze because we are tired of seeing our Consitution walked on and ignored but, why are so many of you so quick to want to walk on this teachers first ammendment rights. If her adult writing is being kept out to the classroom as it appears to be then people need to not worry about it. Oh, here is one for you did you know that some teachers go home after a hard days work of teaching students and have sex with their partners oh and they might even have a drink or two or read a Playboy magazine. Maybe even watch an “R” rated movie. We better get rid of them all for doing those things. But please don’t worry about the ones trying to actively indoctrinate our children into communism.

TIERRAH: Changing the subject to fit your own agenda? We’re not talking about pedofiles. We’re discussing a teacher who is being forced out of her teaching job because of a LEGAL sideline she has as an author…Writing books for adult consumption, and seducing children may seem like the same thing to a small minded person like yourself…But in reality, it’s not justification for getting rid of a good teacher.

My apologies to all who disagreed with me. I’m just concerned about all the sexual influence our children are exposed to these days, many of them elementary aged children. Guess I’m old fashioned. I would be the first to stand up for this teacher’s right to publish her novels, just hated that it was all exposed and brought to the attention of the children. I tend to hold teachers to a higher standard, much like our politicians – I expect more out of them because they are in the limelight.

She’s capitalizing on a persons fantasies. I think it is no-ones business what she writes, unless
she has her students read them, or do a report on them. If a teacher is drunk or on drugs on the job, teaching communism or involving their students in riots or protesting I won’t stand for that, but writing steamy novels that in my eyes are a waste of time, let her enjoy her capital!

I don’t get why this is such a big deal. They said she has been teaching for 25 years and the parents had no idea she did that on the side? Obviously she didn’t incorporate her books into her English classes. That’s not fair to ask her to choose to be a teacher or author. It seems she has a passion for both. We all have our fantasies, why can’t she have hers? Again, if nobody had a clue, she’s doing pretty good with keeping her teaching and being an author separate.

It’s about the same thing…softcore porn. Who cares? A few uptight hypocrites who are probably in need of a good time start screaming bloody murder about a good english teacher who obviously knows how to keep her two different lines of income separated? Okay, so the way I see it….Yes as a libertarian, I believe this woman has the right to author these books, even if she is a high school teacher. However, these parents do not have the equal right to put their children in another school, (unless they fork out the cash for private school, or better yet home school) so in order for her rights to be respected, their rights must be infringed upon. In a true Libertarian society, she could keep teaching, and any parent who believed their child’s best interest was at stake, could remove them from the school. Until then, I would think when dealing with impressionable children/teens, we would all want to err on the side of caution.

      @KellyR

By erring on the side of caution, do you mean we should scan the hard drive of the computer of the teenage snoop in question who obviously has unfettered access to the internet? If we find any pornography trails on this hard drive (probability: 99.9999%) may we then sew a scarlet H for hypocrite on all his garments?

If these teenagers peak through a crack in the curtains of any of the teachers and see them engaging in any sexual activity may we then also blame the teachers and not the snoopy students? This woman is minding her business and even wrote under a pen name which is analogous to having all her curtains closed.

The precious “children” should stop snooping. The precious “children” should learn the universe does not revolve around them and if they don’t like what others do in privacy, they can stuff it. That’s life. Being “children” does not make them gods. I would scold my child for invading the privacy of others, being a gossip, and generally being a crybaby.

I agree, the issue isn’t whether I think she has the right to do it….As a libertarian, I just think it has to be that way for everybody. If we stand up for her right to do this, we also must also stand up for the parent’s rights. Isn’t the core of libertarianism the idea that we are free to make choices (without gov’t interference) for ourselves as long as we don’t infringe on the rights of others? In this situation, these parents are not free to place their children in a different public school. Therefore, they must accept this woman’s other occupation in order to assure her rights are not violated.

No offense, I don’t see why it matters if this only came out because some student found it on the internet by accident. She advertised who she was by putting her pic out there and stating that she was a teacher. Which is fine, but once you put something on the internet, you can’t expect it not to found eventually.

So…. stand up for parents’ rights by firing a teacher who did nothing illegal or unethical? Immoral, sure, some might say, but as a libertarian you should know better than to try to regulate what people do in their own bedrooms.

Even if their bedrooms are cold, empty places, populated by just one lonely computer the teacher pours her loneliness into each and every night.

Honestly, this is a difficult situation, and I’m not sure what the solution is. I believe she has the right to do this, but as a parent, I would also like to have the right to remove my child from the school and place them in another. Truthfully, I don‘t think anything like this can be resolved without violating someone’s rights….Unless we get rid of the Dept of Ed….(I‘m sure I’ll get attacked for this too)….and I would love to see that!

I actually think it is pretty funny because children are so coddled, the school safety czar is a homosexual advocate and we turn the other cheek, this woman is writing some trashy novels and she is vilified.

“Jennings, talking to a church audience in New York in 2000, said, “Twenty percent of people are hard-core fair-minded [pro-homosexual] people. Twenty percent are hard-core [anti-homosexual] bigots. We need to ignore the hard-core bigots, get more of the hard-core fair-minded people to speak up, and we’ll pull that 60 percent [of people in the middle] over to our side. That’s really what I think our strategy has to be. We have to quit being afraid of the religious right. We also have to quit — I’m trying to find a way to say this. I’m trying not to say, ‘[F—] ‘em!’ which is what I want to say, because I don’t care what they think!”

This is so ridiculous it makes my blood boil. This woman (albeit ugly woman) has the right to write whatever she wants to. Being an author is not a degenerate profession. If you don’t like that kind of book, don’t read it. The high school boy who was snooping and investigating his teacher should be taught the lesson that you shouldn‘t do background investigations on people if you aren’t prepared for what you will find. Gossip is also wrong and DEFINITELY unmanly.

This is quite different from a teacher violating a morality clause by being a porn star or prostitute. She’s an author. And the obscenity is in the eye of the beholder, who by the way, does not have to read it if they don’t want to! What about books previously considered obscene which are now considered classic like “Catcher in the Rye” and “Ulysses?”

These are some ugly, judgmental, ticked off fat witches with nothing else to do but sit around and grasp at straws to feel good about their pathetic lives. And to say that the “boy” now has to wonder if his teacher is “looking at him that way” is absurd. Are the books about pederasty? Didn’t think so.

If they succeed in running this teacher out, they should also run out every teacher who has biological children because it’s obvious that they are doing naughty, naughty things at home (the children are the proof.) And the high-schoolers shouldn’t have to wonder if those other teachers are looking at them “that way.”

    Beyond ridiculous.

Yeah. There’s no so many successful, published authors that even colleges can keep them on hand to teach their students. The high school is lucky to have here.

Note to Mormons/fundamentalists: there‘s no evidence that she’s in any way behaved badly in the classroom. Think about how you‘d feel if parents were calling for a teacher’s dismissal because she wrote books for Deseret/Berean in her off-time.

If nothing else, this teacher will be able to speak from experience when talking about Dangling participles, Split infinitives, and Lingual flexibility.

Porn writers fill a public need while enriching themselves. Ayn Rand published soft erotica under the name, “Ann O’Connor“ to pay the bills before her ”serious” novels took off. Ironically, this was the name she later used to receive Medicare and public assistance funds to pay her lung cancer bills, because she was ashamed to admit she needed help.)

This is nanny state BS. She makes a honest living by writing books, what is the problem? Did she make her books required reading? I doubt it. Morally she has done nothing wrong, not that it would matter if she did as long as it was legal. I do not see where this is a Conservative issue. I am all for her having another source of income. Unless she has broken laws or school policies she has every right to do this.

This is like folks who don’t want native speakers to teach their kids foreign language, because they talk funny. Way too many teachers are only theoreticians on the subjects they teach and not real practitioners. Would you rather take a course in playing the stock market from a proven mutual fund manager or from a trader that does not trade his own funds?

OH wait they did. This person writes so well that they have several series of paperback books. They have a passion to communicate through the written word. Do these people have ANY idea how hard it is to become a published author? My GOD the education on the English language this person could offer.

It is interesting that while there are so many objectivist and libertarian issues involved with this story, so many of us just feel compelled to comment on the young lady’s appearance, as if it means a thing.

I don’t see what this has to do with her teaching job .. seems that being an “accomplished” author as long as she is NOT bringing the “night work” into the classroom should show that she can do and not just “teach”.

Come on man, this so-called (transexual) guy should have give any level headed parent a red flag warning.

Teachers in years past were so straight laced as Teachers and were good at what they taught in school. At night they were what they were but at school at least they looked like decent clean cut American Females or Males.

It is to laugh. I have yet to see, hear, or read any looney lefty that believed anything was sacred other than their own desires; and, I have never seen, heard, or read the words of a looney lefty that understood the definition of honor much less actually possessed it.

Your little rant above merely confirms my observation. You and your kind are good examples of why the concept of retro-active birth control was created.

According to the story she’s been a good teacher for 25 years. Has she been a problem? Not according to the story. Has she had issues regarding the children ( sexual predator, advances ) because of her secret profession? Seems to be able to keep it seperated. Are these graphic porn type books or just racey? I don’t know. She’s just writting this stuff down. Some teachers, now believe this or not, actually go home and PARTICIPATE in the nasty when there not teaching children! For shame! Keep them away!
