Outrage After HuffPo Contributor Calls Catholics ‘Jesus Eaters’

Can you mock a religion in public and slough it off as “just a joke?” Writer Larry Doyle thinks so.

On February 24th, the Huffington Post published a piece on its Comedy page entitled “The Jesus-Eating Cult of Rick Santorum.”  The author of the post is Larry Doyle, a writer with credits on such serious TV dramas as The Simpsons, Beavis & Butt-Head, and Looney Tunes.

Mr. Doyle initially promoted the post on his Twitter feed this way.

Huffington Post Contributor Larry Doyle Calls Catholics Jesus Eaters

I’m guessing that tweet did not drive enough traffic to the site, so Doyle followed up with another tweet, using a more offensive and incendiary headline.

Huffington Post Contributor Larry Doyle Calls Catholics Jesus EatersThat tweet lit a fire and traffic has been buzzing to HuffPo and his story.

I have read the post (and Doyle’s non-apology apology). My initial response was one of non-surprise. We so often see people trashing/mocking someone or something after they have broken away from that person or thing, do not understand it, or are afraid that it is gaining influence in their world. Perhaps all three conditions exist here.

So what’s so offensive?

The headline for starters.

“The Jesus-Eating Cult of Rick Santorum” — In just a few words, a leading candidate for the GOP presidential slot is being called a cannibal and a cult member.

Doyle then launches into his brutal attacks on Catholics. He describes the faith as a “so-called church” and also refers to it as the “tactical arm of the North American Man-Boy Love Association”  (NAMBLA).

But he then takes a curious detour: he makes certain that the reader knows that his “wisdom” on the topic comes from experience. So wise is he, though, that he was clever enough to free himself from Catholicism:

As a former member of same sect (an Irish-Catholic, the worst kind), I have read the texts, participated in the rites, and even seen behind the curtain, as it were, as a one-time altar boy, so help me. I managed to escape, but then, Santorum is in much deeper than I ever was.

Doyle says clearly that he is a “former member” and yet, once criticism started piling up on his Twitter feed, he quickly reverted to the old excuse of saying, “but I’m one of YOU… that makes it okay for me to attack:”

Huffington Post Contributor Larry Doyle Calls Catholics Jesus Eaters

He did say that he is a “former member” and “managed to escape,” didn’t he? So which is it? Is he Catholic or not?

Let’s get back to the initial post and more of the offensive slurs.

Doyle claims that he has discovered a “possible connection between the Roman Catholic Church pedophile program and NAMBLA, which I discovered after conducting some research on the internet.”

That’s quite an unsubstantiated statement. A possible connection? Nothing is specified. No sources, no story links, no dates. Just a smear associating the Catholic Church with one of the most offensive groups known to man.

He also calls Pope Benedict XVI “a former Nazi.” (That’s a slam popular with the Left, as witnessed by a Blaze item published last October when Susan Sarandon said something similar. We showed the accusation is disingenuous.)

Doyle wraps his humor piece with the following:

Need I remind you that only once in our great history has a Roman Catholic been elected president, and how tragically it ended?

Nothing says funny like the assassination of a President. Bad taste aside, what’s the suggestion there?

Understandably, Catholics and people of faith have responded to Doyle’s post (including Irish-Catholics who do not consider themselves to be “the worst kind”). Many are demanding an apology from HuffPo honcho Arianna Huffington. The list of offended faithful includes Bill Donohue of the Catholic League:

These people may be threatened by Catholicism, but what gives them the chills are babies. And they really flip over couples like the Santorums and the Palins who don’t abort their disabled children.

Mr. Donohue’s response drew fire from Larry Doyle in his “apology.” He dismissed Donohue by referring to the well-respected president of the Catholic League as, “the official fake spokesman for the Church through his League of Extraordinary Catholics or whatever it’s called…”

Following the wave of demands for an apology, four days after posting his attack on Santorum and Catholics this headline appeared on the site:

Huffington Post Contributor Larry Doyle Calls Catholics Jesus Eaters

In other words, Doyle was not apologizing. And he was clear about it from the start: “Actually, I’m not sorry at all, but I suppose an explanation is in order.”

He tried to calm the waters, explaining:

My criticism took the form of a ridiculously over-the-top broadside against Roman Catholicism, a demonstration of the type of vicious religious ignorance and intolerance I too often see coming from too many so-called Christians, especially Santorum.

Larry Doyle is at least accurate in his characterization of his work as a “type of vicious religious ignorance and intolerance…” I just can’t seem to find any examples of Rick Santorum being vicious, ignorant or intolerant when it comes to the faith of others. Santorum is a practicing Catholic who wants to be able to follow his faith as his Church sees fit.

“Larry Doyle’s recent anti-Catholic screed in the Huffington Post, ’The Jesus-Eating Cult of Rick Santorum,’ is bigoted and unacceptable, and a perfect example of ‘flame-throwing, name-calling, and simplistic attack dog rhetoric,’” a group of conservative leaders said in a letter to Arianna Huffington.

“His column should be taken off your site, and you should issue an apology for ever publishing such trash.”

“Bigots like Doyle think they can hurl the most contemptible insults towards Catholics (‘Jesus eaters’) and when called out, claim it was just a joke. What cowardice. What a double standard,” the letter says later.

“If such an article was written concerning the Islamic or Jewish faith, the public outcry would be overwhelming, and rightly so. But anti-Catholicism is the last acceptable form of bigotry, and The Huffington Post is taking advantage of that bigotry for all it’s worth.”

The letter is signed by Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the pro-life Susan B. Anthony List and Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, among others.

What do you think? Is this a comedy writer just trying to be over-the-top, or did he cross a line? And are conservative leaders right to demand an actual apology?

So Larry Doyle admits he is a homosexual. Him and Bill Maher should get together and NOT reproduce. That would be 2 less stalkers walking free. At least for a few weeks until their eternal love burned out and they opt for promiscuity. Hopefully they can both see the light and repent before it is too late.

Oh, I don’t think we have to worry with either of those two. Maher may be one of the only atheists/agnostics who will go after Islam, but he’s still too much of a shill, scronny wimpy libby to land a serious chick (a brief “relationship” with Ann Coulter doesn’t count) and Doyle, well, homosexual relations = no kids so, no danger there.

BTW, in years past I always wondered what Jesus meant when he said “you will know a follower if you ask him if Jesus Christ is the Lord and savior…” I figured most people would simply lie and how would we know for sure. Thanks Larry, for making it very clear and thank you Jesus for opening my eyes every day.

All Christians eat and drink the body and blood of Christ. If these people want to go to war with Catholics just remember that in America most Catholics are armed or can get armed very quickly. This is not Egypt or a Moslem nation.

But … they are “Jesus eaters”.
And they do “drink His blood”. Just ask them.
To be Catholic means to be of a particular sort of Christian, with unique doctrines and rituals that are distinct from those of other sorts Christians.
Transsubstantiation is one of the uniquely Catholic beliefs. As such it is entirely appropriate to identify adherents as “Jesus eaters”. One might also fairly call them “drinkers of the Lord’s blood” (but that’s rather lengthy), or “Papists”, as these too denote unique aspects of their theology. Just as those Christians who believe that water baptism is an essential of their particular faith might fairly be called “baptists”; and those whose theology is unique for its confidence in the Book of Mormon might reasonably be called “Mormons” or maybe “Mornonites”.
      Seems pretty simple really.

@ConservativeCanucklehead…I don’t know if your post was meant to be offensive but as a proud Catholic, you’re right. Technically.

We eat His body and drink His blood because that’s_what_he_said. I know there are “christians” out there who when Jesus said this, would have stood up and walked out at the ludicrous statement or asked Him to clarify the comment. Not me. I know this writer called us “Jesus Eaters” to be offensive and like many so called former Catholics, they think that because they were once an altar boy they know everything there is to know about the faith. Personally, though, I’m glad people know that yes, Catholics believe we eat His flesh and drink His blood. Many Catholics don’t even know that.

What Doyle says and thinks, with inflammatory language, negates any truth, he thinks he is telling.
I am not a Roman Catholic simply because of Mariology. The RC Church teaches in it’s Catechism, that Mary was not only a virgin before the birth of Christ, but maintained it afterwards, and claim, Jesus had no brothers through Mary. Scripture of course ,does not say this. The biggest problem I have though,is that the RC church claims Mary NEVER sinned, and did not have Original sin. This of course goes against what Scripture says. That ALL have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God. I know their mariology teaching saying she was an exception to this.I have asked RC Priests and followers of the RC church teaching to explain the following to me. In Luke Ch1 V 47 Mary is quoted as saying the following: And my spirit hath rejoiced in God, my Saviour. My question is this: IF Mary does not bear Original Sin, and was sinless throughout her life ,WHY does she call the Lord her saviour.? Obviously, IF she was sinless, she had no need of Salvation.
As it says in Isaiah: Let us reason together saith the Lord. Any comments from Catholics, to explain this would be welcome. I might add, I have talked to priests. The answer I get is. IT is Church Tradition, and Teaching.,so don’t use that, since we know what Christ himself said to the Pharisees, and Saducees re the Traditions of Men. I take no delight in sharing this, but we are called to speak the truth.

And potentially, all future discourse. As you come to realize that insanity HAS, finally, over taken the slimmest tenuous margin on reality or rationality remaining to them (communists) in discourse, it must be accepted the only avenue open to either side is to completely disregard their insane ramblings as the mental disorder that it “IS”.

@Hollywood You see only what you want to. If you read Luke 1:48-49, it says “for he has looked upon his handmaid’s lowliness … the Mighty One has done great things for me.” Also, Luke 1:28 says “Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you.”

Mary was sinless because she was filled with God’s grace, a gift from God. Just like you or I or the saints may be gifted with grace if we are lucky enough. Mary was different in that she was so entirely full of grace, that she was sinless. So she did need God. He made her sinless. And there is nothing in the Bible which states that Mary had other children. In fact, Jesus entrusted John, the beloved disciple, with her care while he was on the Cross. In those days, one would only do that if one had no siblings to take care of one’s widowed mother. Before you cite to passages which talk about Jesus’ “brothers” asking for him in a verse in the Bible, let me tell you that the Greek word used in those passages means “cousins”, not literal siblings.

RCs follow Church tradition as well as Scripture. My question for you or others who proclaim Sola Scriptura (and who thereby disregard tradition) is this: read John 6:53-56. Then tell me how the Eucharist and the Wine are not Jesus’ body and blood. If you follow the Bible, then do so. Are you receiving his body and blood as he told you to? In John 6, many disciples left Jesus because they could not understand what he was asking them to do. Rather than trust him, they doubted.

In endless amusment I watch the unbelivers flop around in their endless stupidpitty talking about their lack of knowledge on relegion. christ broke bread at the last Supper as a token of rememberence in his coming broken body. The fruit of the vine was in rememberence of his future shed blood. I do have to smile at the use of waffers. I guess stale waffers are easy to handle. Even unleven bread is not correct. Christ was breaking bread during passover, the only bread available was unleven. Christ said, “bread of your kind,” should be used. Even a French loaf could be passed around and small bits torn from it if that was the desire.

      Doyle’s just being an idiot.
At the last supper Christ broke from the traditional passover/pasach celebration and offered bread and wine to his disciples saying…“eat for this is my body”. It was the first communion, the first gathering of an infant church. His body is the church by eating the bread/wafer you are part of that body. “Drink for this is my blood that I shed for you”. Christ was about to undergo 72 hours of torture and humiliation leading to his death on the cross. His blood was to be shed for the forgivness of our sins..even for men like Doyle. This of course breaks from Jewish law because in Jewish law, only God can forgive sins and Jews don’t accept Christ as the son of God. Christ said this would be so. So drinking his blood through consecrated wine (in Christian Orthodoxy the whole congregation drinks the wine, unlike Catholicism) is the acceptance of his sacrifice to forgive our sins. The most profound event in Christianity, an utterly selfless act of sacrifce to save mankind, Doyle reduces to a highschool level “yuck yuck”. He’s an idiot.

      @Avengerk

Just an FYI on two points.

      1. Rose-Ellen was obviously responding to @Teamarcheson, who claimed Catholics were being attacked in Egypt (which is false). You can try and spin it another way, but no one else mentioned Egypt in the entire article.

      2. On the subject of Catholicism (which is the topic at hand, not Christianity as a whole), over 20% of San Francisco is Catholic. It’s pretty unlikely that anyone selling plates at a fundraiser there is going to purposely malign one of the largest religious groups in their area.

Also, one more note. When you change the wording from “Catholicism” to “Christianity,” you’re also setting up a strawman argument. For example, this entire article is about Catholicism (as was Rose-Ellen‘s and Teamarcheson’s comments). Despite Beck’s plea that “we all are Catholics,” not respecting the differences between Christian denominations denigrates them. You don’t seem to recognize this, so I thought I should point it out :-)

When someone in the public eye makes disparaging comments against any group of people especially someone who writes for the younger crowd, it can make his/her comments mainstream rather quickly. Why? Because you are dealing with people that are younger, immature and more impressionable. That type of sickness spreads. It also validates those on the far left who relish in hate speach to help further the Obama Administration’s agenda against the Catholic Church.

I bet Mr. Doyle was probably rewarded handsomely by the Obama Administration as well as the Huffington Post for publishing the comments.

I very much agree. Disrespectful? For sure. But it was so over-the-top (and as it was coming from the comedy section) it was pretty obvious it was satire. But Mormons have to deal with it all the time (magic underwear, anyone?) and the people making such comments aren’t trying to be satirical; they’re trying to be insulting. Heck, the worst part is half the insults from his article are commonly uttered by people. Insulting priests for celibacy, the Eucharist’s transubstantiation, the pope’s past as a Hitler Youth, and the paedophilia? I’ve seen every one of those said on this site by commentators at some time. That doesn’t even come close to the hatred thrown on Muslims here.

People need to chill out and stop antagonizing others’ religions. It’s the difference between saying “I don’t believe the Eucharist turns into the literal body of Christ“ and ”you’re a cannibal.”

Billy Graham’s Prayer For Our Nation

Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask your forgiveness and to seek your direction and guidance. We know Your Word says, ‘Woe to those who call evil good’, but that is exactly what we have done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values. We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery. We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare. We have killed our unborn and called it choice. We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable. We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self esteem. We have abused power and called it politics. We have coveted our neighbor’s possessions and called it ambition. We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression. We have ridiculed the time-honored values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment. Search us, Oh God, and know our hearts today; cleanse us from sin and set us free. Amen!’

Would he write similar satire about Allah? If he did, his life will be at risk. I am not easily offended, especially by Catholic jokes and such, but this does offend me. I take Jesus very seriously. It hurts me to hear Him mocked in the sacrament of the Eucharist. I think he was mocked enough before His crucifixion. I’m sure Jesus can handle it since He is God, but it saddens me that such nastiness occurs anyway. Doyle is a very bitter person. I wonder if he is motivated by guilt and jealousy.

They subcribe to the heresy that Jesus ransomed mankind on the cross and the ransom was paid to God the father-the God depicted in the old testament which coptics believe was not a true lover of man but a rathful vengeful God.Jesus is the lover of mankind -not the father of the Old Testament..catholics in egypt are not experiencing problems with moslems in egypt.

Satire is merely a form of communication meant to send a message. What that message is can vary greatly from innocently poking fun at someone’s quirks, mistakes, etc. to outright vicious attacks on someone’s beliefs. Interpreting someone’s message can be tricky, but sometimes it can be obvious. I think most informed, devout Catholics would see this as being at the vile end of the spectrum. About as mature as a school yard bully making fun of and mocking someone. If others don’t stand up to this kind of immature bullying, then it will only continue and get worse. I say enough is enough. Be the one who stands up to the bully. Claiming satire, is irrelevant.

TOKYOROSE….Doyle’s spite against christians should be taken very seriously. His playground level “humour” may be inocuous to some, but his intent to devalue Christianity is glaring and real. His twisted hermeneutics betray the typical godless liberal who believes they know all there is to know about the church and christianity yet they actually know very little. I can understand why you want him ignored. His malice towards christians adds to the meme that Obama and his liberal supporters really do have animus towards the church and you need votes this year from those “folks”. They’re “folks” of course when you need their votes of course and “bible thumping, gun totting, bigots” when you’re addressing $3k a plate elites in San Francisco. Meanwhile Obama and the professional left shake every tree for every lefty vote in the country. Nice try.

mary is the arc of the new covenant-who is jesus.just like the arc of the old covenent[the holie of holieswhich contained the ten commandments was a sacred undelifed container -the church projected that the arc of the new covenent [mary-where christ dwelt till he was born] was also undefiled and sacred. That is why the church says she remained a virgin and was outside the condition of the rest of mankind and did not inherit the stain of original sin.asa special gift God gave to her .She did not know she was conceived without the stain of sin .She could have sinned because she as a human had free will but we believe she didn’t as that would be consistent with her status as being holy [the arc of the new covenent].In her humbleness she would not claim to have never sinned. She partakes in the falleness of man in that she suffered and died too,so existentially -as a human she is in need of salvation too [the gift of eternal life after death in heaven].That morally she never sinned is posited because she was free to never sin and she was conceived as a sacred vessel [arc of the covenent].Nothing sugests she sinned but that she was submissive and humble so the church views her as sacred from conception to death; an undefiled arc of the new covenent-who though free to sin chose not to;a perfect arc for our new covenent -jesus christ

Now in the part of calling people of faith “Jesus-eaters” that refers to cannibalism; and anyone who is even partly familiar with the four gospels sees the Sanhedrian council of old Israel accused Jesus of the same thing.

You are among my favorites out here Snow, may God Bless You! From a Catholic Perspective, I’d just like to add a few thoughts in regards to John 6:51-58. But before I do, it’s important to realize this took place during Passover as John 4 reveals. We Catholics believe the New Testament is fulfilling the Old Testament here because during Passover in the OT, God stipulated through Moses, you’re going to have to take an unblemished male lamb, slaughter him, sprinkle his blood on your doorpost, roast that lamb and eat that lamb. Now suppose a family did all that but didn’t eat the lamb, what would have happened to that family? They would have woken up the next day and found their first born son dead. It wasn’t enough to kill the lamb, they had to eat the sacrificial lamb. And if Jesus Christ is coming to perfect the OT types which he does, then he really is the Passover lamb. He is slain, his blood is sprinkled but if he is the sacrificial lamb of the new covenant Passover, it isn’t enough for the lamb to die, it isn’t enough for his blood to be shed, we have to eat the lamb. We have to consume sacrifice for communion to be reached.

60 Therefore many of His disciples, when they heard this, said, “This is a hard saying; who can understand it?”

61 When Jesus knew in Himself that His disciples complained about this, He said to them, “Does this offend you? 62 What then if you should see the Son of Man ascend where He was before? 63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life. 64 But there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who would betray Him. 65 And He said, “Therefore I have said to you that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted to him by My Father.”

66 From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more. 67 Then Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also want to go away?”

68 But Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 Also we have come to believe and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

Ahhh yes, this is an oldie but goodie. Cannibalism was used..say what…2000 years ago. Satan pulled this one out of the mothballs and dusted it off to use against followers of Christ. Soon evil will be declaring that Christians are killing and eating children (also an oldie but goodie from the past to demonize a certain selection of people).

One day all will be rounded up and those that refuse to accept the one world religion, who refuse the mark of the beast, will be put to death. Christians will be the first because satan knows where salvation flows from and the good news of salvation must be (for total evil to succeed) stopped at all costs.

Well, how about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints? Romney and his Morman faith have been a target for some time, and now that Santorum is moving up in the polls, it‘s the Catholic’s turn.

Black Liberation Theology is fine with that. Endorses it even as white on white violence would be a new holiday in BLT thinkspeak.

I heard Lutherans eat Jesus as well.

Baptists believe Jesus sacrificed himself for their sins.

Still others believe that committing themselves to Christ and being “born again” will save them from hell.

Wow, sounds crazy doesn’t it? or does it?

its quite barbaric. life is in the blood therefore the signifigance is great. – hey those dems critical of Christian faith are aware that Obama claims that His saviour is Jesus. So, the president believes He will be saved based on the sacrifice of Jesus Christ and its atonement for his sins. Are y’all okay with that? That would mean He believes in Jesus. How do you feel about a man who believes that Jesus Christ saved him? Im curious.

BIDDLE…Obama doesn‘t try to ram religion down anyone’s throat like people on the right are inclined to do. Besides…I thought the religious people on the right believe Obama is a Muslim.

I never understood the “eat for this is my flesh…..drink for this is my blood” aspect of christianity either. It is a finite collection of cells that eventually are no more. For the physical, sure it may have some significance, . . . . but could have no bearing on “the spiritual” [for those who believe in the spirit].

Since you bring up “barbaric”, what is your position on abortion?

Abortion is not a religious ritual…it’s a medical procedure.

A person who isn‘t spiritual doesn’t accept the things of God’s Spirit, for they are nonsense to him. He can’t understand them because they are spiritually evaluated. 1 Cor 2:14

The message about the cross is nonsense to those who are being destroyed, but it is God’s power to us who are being saved. 1 Cor 1:18

As Moses’ Teachings tell us, blood was used to cleanse almost everything, because if no blood is shed, no sins can be forgiven. Heb 9:22

Under the old system, the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a young cow could cleanse people’s bodies from ceremonial impurity. Just think how much more the blood of Christ will purify our consciences from sinful deeds so that we can worship the living God. For by the power of the eternal Spirit, Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins. Hebrews 9:13-14

      Medical procedure huh?

That’s kind of “sanitizing” it for the sheep, isn’t it?

My how wonderful all these medical advancements are for the sheep these days.

      @ lumbarspine

It’s very simple, God ask for sacrifices so that humans would feel their sorrow (for sin) or celebration (for newborns, harvest, provision, etc.).

Now, what was the TRUE SACRIFICE? Most think it was killing and offering the remains on the altar. However, the instructions to bring a “blemish free, young male goat or lamb,“ or ”first fruits of of the harvest” were the actual sacrifice in an AGRARIAN SOCIETY! I raise sheep and dogs. For me to remove form my breeding program THE BEST is antithetical to improving my breeding program or production of my crops!

The “sacrifices” of Cain and Able which occurred before instructions given concerning “cereal sacrifices.” Cain’s “sacrifice” of fruits and vegetables did not meet the early instructions from God that a true sacrifice FOR SIN must be a BLOOD SACRIFICE. Hence by God like Able‘s sacrifice of a blemish free lamb from his flock over Cain’s gift from the ground he worked which was bloodless and not as figurative in it’s horrid appearance of the horribleness of sin.

Jesus, the firstborn, blemishless Son of God replaced the animal sacrifices as they could only prefigure the true sacrifice of Jesus giving Himself in payment of the sins of the world. As humanity moved from an agrarian society to more of a town society the understanding of sacrifice became more distant, including buying animals for sacrifice right at the Temple, not a true sacrifice!

      Thank you Lord Jesus!
