Outrage After Power Co. Charges Fee to Hang American Flags Honoring Fallen Soldier

Outrage After Power Co. Charges Fee to Hang American Flags Honoring Fallen SoldierResidents in a small Long Island, NY community are fuming after a local power company charged a fee in order to hang American flags along a parade route honoring a fallen soldier.

“Absolutely ridiculous,” Shelter Island Town Councilman Peter Reich said of the $5 per-flag fee assessed by the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA). The flags covered 19 poles in all and were in honor of Army Lt. Joseph Theinert who died last June.

But according to the power company, the controversial fee is mandated by state law. And in a show of good faith, LIPA Chairman Michael Hervey has even offered to pay the fee himself:

On Wednesday, Councilman Reich discussed the issue with WNYW-TV:

Just before 9/11 there was a car dealership that had about 100 or more American flags proudly waving everyday along a major highway in Minneapolis. There was talk about removing those flags because it was becoming an “eye sore”. An eye sore?
After 9/11 there wasn‘t a house on the block that didn’t have an American Flag waving in the wind.
What happened America? Where did your sense of Pride go? Hundreds of years of blood and treasure has been reduced to this?
When I was 4th grade me and another student were in charge of the Flag. We would unfold it, hook the clips in the holes (making sure it never touched the ground), then raising the flag.
At the end of the school day we did the opposite. We folded the flag like the military does and never disrespected the flag. It was a piece of colored cloth, but I knew it was more than that, It was the pride of freedom that waves in the wind for all to see. We are the United States of America! The greatest country on earth. We lift it high so all can see our freedom. God bless all of the youth of our great country to remember like I did, that the flag is our declaration of freedom and to never disrespect it! Keep it coming Haters of America.. And we will keep kicking your ass!

During my Senior Year of High School [1978-79], I offered my service to the school by raising each morning and lowering each afternoon our American Flag. It was a joy an honor to do. I always enjoyed and still do enjoy seeing the American Flag freely flying on the flag pole.

Why is actions like this surprising? As a retired military person I can attest that many people, even businessmen, have a very low opinion of military people. During my 20 years in the U.S. Army I was asked on several occasions did I join the Army because I couldn’t find a job, or why didn’t I get out of the Army and get a “real” job. I didn’t bother telling them that I felt an obligation to pay back my Country for the life that I and my whole family lived since I felt it would be a waste of time.

WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives.

A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of the people. Only a small “inside” group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few, at the expense of the very many. Out of war a few people make huge fortunes.

In the World War [I] a mere handful garnered the profits of the conflict. At least 21,000 new millionaires and billionaires were made in the United States during the World War. That many admitted their huge blood gains in their income tax returns. How many other war millionaires falsified their tax returns no one knows.

How many of these war millionaires shouldered a rifle? How many of them dug a trench? How many of them knew what it meant to go hungry in a rat-infested dug-out? How many of them spent sleepless, frightened nights, ducking shells and shrapnel and machine gun bullets? How many of them parried a bayonet thrust of an enemy? How many of them were wounded or killed in battle?

Out of war nations acquire additional territory, if they are victorious. They just take it. This newly acquired territory promptly is exploited by the few – the selfsame few who wrung dollars out of blood in the war. The general public shoulders the

US Soldier… Freedom is not free. Do soldiers use supplies? Yes, of course. Are those supplies business products? Again, yes. Have borders changed because of wars? Yes, in fact counties have been formed because of wars.

Your slant seems to be that nothing good comes from war because someone produces the supplies used to wage war and they do so at a profit. The folks who make those products are paid, they pay for their supplies with those wages and on and on.

Does that mean that their isn’t abuse? No… That is why we the people are ultimately responsible for the actions of those we vote to represent us in this Republic. We can whine and point fingers, but ultimately the responsibility is with We The People. That is you and me.
