‘Outrage’: Company Cancels Fence Designed to Look Like a Holocaust-Era Crematorium Barricade

When one uses Holocaust-related imagery — especially in a for-profit situation — he or she had better be prepared for the subsequent outrage. Studio Job, a Belgium-based design firm known for pushing hard against conventional ideals, has landed itself some negative attention after the company proposed a Holocaust-inspired fence design for a client in the Netherlands.

The company’s design, which was meant to mimic the barricade outside of the crematoria of Buchenwald, Germany’s largest concentration camp, drew international ire. After all, nearly 50,000 people were killed at Buchenwald, which causes one to wonder why the seemingly-insensitive design was considered in the first place.

The Huffington Post describes the planned fence:

The piece consists of two chimneys connected by an arch of smoke. ‘To Each His Own’ is written in Latin on a bell that hangs from the center. These words in German were written on Buchenwald’s entrance.

The president of the European Jewish Congress was among the outraged, as he claimed that the proposed fence “[t]rivializ[ed] the Holocaust.” In the end, the design company, led by Job Smeets and Nynke Tynagel, abandoned the plan.

In a statement to Fast Code Design, they said:

“We have decided to alter the original plans for the gate/ artwork due to the commotion and unrest in society. In our work we always aim to use iconographic images. In this particular case we have insufficiently realised what the impact would be. We thoroughly regret it if this has caused upset and grief with parties affected by this, that has in no way been our intention. Art is in our view an invitation to dialogue, an invitation that is often paired with controversy. We will continue to engage in this but with a more sensitive view towards the sentiments as mentioned above/before.”

In addition to this international drama, Studio Job also recently invoked the Holocaust in yet another project. After the firm designed a tablecloth that had a concentration camp printed on it, the Groninger Museum, which has displayed the company’s unique creations in the past, refused to show it. Smeets didn’t understand why the museum treated the project in such a manner.

“It is ridiculous that in the museum you can show dicks and vaginas with no trouble, but just fifty meters away in a private lounge they say no to my cloth,” he said. ”We were using an iconography that is part of our history…. these pieces express the opposite of what you think they do …. please open your angry eyes!,” Smeets continued.

While he claims that the company is attempting to break taboos, critics maintain that the designers are attempting to capitalize off of the Holocaust. It is this exploitation that doesn’t quite sit well with individuals who stand opposed to both the Holocaust-inspired fence and tablecloth.

    read a lot of good comments. We are all noticing how the rats are emboldened to come out of their sewers. Pushing and prodding to see what they can get away with, how far they can go. I feel like I now know how it felt in Nazi Germany. Most of the rest of the world is ahead of us. Obviously they believe they are going to pull it off. Many have committed, they can’t turn back. If they lose they will be tried for treason. So they will fight like cornered rats. Or, in their case, being sociopaths, they will lie like never before, breaking all previous records. I expect a lot of truly epic whoppers to be told. And the way they can coordinate their stories now will make for an awesome time. It would be a good time to keep track of them and have a rating system. Maybe some kind of reward system for the person discovering the largest lies. Or largest number told by a particular person. Or farthest back in history.

    Well there you have it right from their own mouths, their “company is trying to break taboos”, in other words they are trying to breakdown opposition to the ma ss mur der of J e w s. Why would you want to do such a thing unless your eventual goal was to bring about the return of its acceptance?

    As a designer myself, this fence was explicitly meant to offend. There’s no doubt about it. They wanted it to be shocking and post-modern. This kind of ‘art’ is made all the time – they like to do it because they get attention from it. They want people to be upset, which gives the artist a righteous stance against those that are offended (the artist accuses them of being “angry”). These actions are morally perverse and quite sick.

    And he equates the display of “dicks and vaginas” as being just as morally appalling as the murder of millions of peaceful Jews. This is one very troubled dude.

      Another strange phenomenon is that Ron Paul supporters are (a minority of them) are becoming openly anti-semitic. That’s not to say that those who acknowledge that Isreal is not now, nor have they ever been our ally are the anti-semites.

      Rob Adkerson, You know there is a veil of it there as well. I will never understand the mind of someone who thinks it’s a good idea for IRAN to have a nuclear bomb, nor any of the other terrorist supporting nations. I think support for those nations is criminal and should that activity should be investigated and dealt with.

    You know what? I don’t believe them. Twice from them, then the book store overseas with a display suggesting Mein Komp, and the recent Blaze artiel on the Dubai gym ad. It’s like the world against Jews and Israel, are quitely testing the waters, seeing the second Jewish holocaust coming.

      Muslims use symbols to express contempt and hate and an in your face typemockery and then they deny that is what it is. This building is a good example.
      Obama is particularly adept using symbols that mean one thing to Muslims and mean something else to us. He even said this in his book.. how he realized he had this special talent. So no one can ever blame him for anything. because everything has another possible ( not probable ) meaning. like lipstick on a pig.. we know what he meant. It’s a great game for a narcissist. They frequently play these games to show themselves how smart they are and how stupid everyone else is.

    I totally get the message, objectivetruth. I recently requested my library buy the book by Andy Andrew that was discussed on GBTV. Let’s see if the lib librarians buy it. Every other book I have requested has been added to the library. I suspect this one won’t. Yes.. we are just one step away.
    But we know things the Jews did not know ( thanks to GB) and we have other ways to respond so I think we can respond differently… .which they are not expecting

    My father was one of the liberators of Ohrdruff, the first camp the allies discovered. To this day he can’t talk about it without crying. The wholesale depravity of the soul that allowed this abomination should never be forgotten. And should never be trivialized.

      My wife’s father who was Jewish also helped Liberate the camps. He never spoke about it. After he passed we got to look in his foot locker. After looking at some of the pictures, and holding a tattered shirt with a Star of David on it, I know why he did not talk about it……….

    Follow the money.This will tell the true tale as to its intention.I’m not jewish and I find it appaling.If it were to be a conversation starter and a monument to their history, why not publicize it ahead of time.Why not donate the profits or a large portion thereof to a holocaust museum or to jewish survivor
    fund?Why not let the world that you were doing just that?

    What the government needs to do is build the fence like the Great Wall of China and make it our Great Wall of Mexico; it would stem illegal movement between the borders as well as provide a tourist attraction for both countries.
