Was Christie Right to Use Police Helicopter to Get to His Son’s Baseball Game?

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has come under scrutiny for using a police helicopter and limo to get to and from his son’s baseball game yesterday (we covered this on the blog this morning as well). NJ.com reports:
As the game at St. Joseph Regional High School in Montvale was about to begin, a noise from above distracted the spectators who watched the 55-foot-long helicopter buzz over the trees in left field, circle the outfield and land in an adjacent football field. Christie left the helicopter and got into a black car with tinted windows that drove him about 100 yards to the baseball field. The governor watched from the bleachers as his eldest son, Andrew, played starting catcher for Delbarton School. Christie played the position of catcher in high school as well.
During the fifth inning, Christie and first lady Mary Pat Christie got into the car, rode back to the helicopter and departed. His son’s team won the game, 7-2…
Assemblyman John Wisniewski (D-Middlesex) said he saw no problem with the governor attending his son’s game. That said, he stated his belief that New Jersey residents shouldn’t have to “pick up the tab.” Christie headed to meet some Iowa donors after the game, which Wisniewski took particular issue with.
In an e-mail to The Blaze, Christie’s communications team defended use of the helicopter via a statement from Colonel Rick Fuentes, Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police:
Governor Christie is on duty every hour of every day. His transportation, safety and security are my responsibility, and he therefore travels with the State Police Executive Protection Unit, whether on state or personal business. As part of our long-standing security protocol, the EPU provides secure, protected travel by vehicle in the overwhelming majority of the Governor’s business and personal travel, except in those rare instances when the Governor’s schedule warrants use of air travel.
To date, Governor Christie has been aboard State Police helicopters 35 times since taking office, including aerial surveys of flood and storm damage. It is important to understand that State Police helicopters fly daily homeland security missions, and use flight time for training purposes, more so lately as we acclimate our pilots to the new aircraft. These are flight hours that would be logged in any event. Therefore, there is no additional cost to taxpayers or the State Police budget, nor is there any interference with our daily mission, by adding the state’s chief executive to any of these trips. Any flights transporting the Governor would be subordinated to priority needs for our aircraft including rescue and emergent law enforcement missions.
While some people have been focused more on the monetary values associated with the situation, Mediaite offers condolences to the governor’s son:
The problem is that this must have been terrible for his son. I mean, think about it! This is high school! High school students are mortified by their parents no matter who they are. You could be the governor, the president, or the King of Awesomevania and your kid would still be embarrassed by you. It’s a fact of life; if you’re a teenager, you don’t want your parents drawing attention.
What do you think? Was usage of the limo and helicopter warranted in this instance?

If you had any idea of who owns what and who is really in charge there you would be shocked. NJ is it’s own little Police State Kingdom. The city I grew up in was the SAFEST city in the United states 2 years in a row. (That was after I moved out of NJ) You don‘t mess with The NJ State Police EVER and you don’t mess with the NJ mafia.. Either way you‘ll end up in a landfill somewhere after you’ve been put through a tree shredder. No one will know you’re gone or care either..

Posted on June 1, 2011 at 11:36pmLOL! Yeah, I thought so, too. For two reasons – 1) 100 yards isn’t that far and could only do him some good. And 2) if he needed a ride for some unforeseen reason, couldn’t he have used a golf cart?

Posted on June 2, 2011 at 2:34amIf some emergency were to happen and the helicopter crew had to take off and handle it, do you expect the Governor to catch a cab ride home? Of course they have to have the limo handy. Besides the fact that Governors don’t travel alone; they always have a detail of several police officers (usually Highway Patrol) with them. The limo allows the small group to move from helicopter to stadium with minimal exposure to potential danger. It’s not about the 100 yards. Those of you criticizing this very wise tactical maneuver show your total ignorance of the reality of security in the current political environment. You’re thinking about this as if you were in this situation, devoid of the constant threat a governor is under and the specific death threats that Governor Christie has received.
Using the helicopter and the limo were the right tactical things to do in this situation. His security detail is well trained and chose correctly.

Posted on June 1, 2011 at 9:57pmThere is a difference in using public property for official use and that of using it for personal use. Taking that helicopter out of service for his personal use, meant that it was not in service for the public good. Posted on June 1, 2011 at 10:26pmI would think that’s why the car was available in a case the helicopter was needed elsewhere. Here‘s a governor who’s had death threats from teachers unions and members, along with many other whack jobs and he is entitled to some type of security. It’s part of the job, just because he becomes a governor doesn‘t mean he doesn’t give up on his family time. There is a line too, if he where taking his kids to school or other personal reasons and using state resources then maybe this should be looked at.
Report Post »deskpilot
Posted on June 2, 2011 at 12:31am@ Bennir Franklin – At no time was the helicopter “out of service.” It was on a reasonably accommodated trip that included the governor. Th Police flight crew was on duty, the helicopter was up and running, and the crew needed to gain flight time in a newly acquired aircraft. put the three together and compare it to the cost of police of multiple jusridictions on standby, the multiple vehicles in the governers entourage, and the helicopter probably saved money. I call that good steewardship of the taxpayer dollars. It’s certainly more efficient than the state buying a helicopter for his exclusive use like Murkowski did with an airplane in AK.
