Outrage Over Religious Leaders Exclusion From 9/11 Memorial — But Have They Ever Been Included?

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg drew criticism Wednesday when his office confirmed no religious leaders would participate in the ceremony commemorating the 10th anniversary of 9/11 next month. (AP File Photo)

As New York City’s ceremony to commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11 draws closer, Mayor Michael Bloomberg made headlines Wednesday when his office confirmed no religious leaders would be allowed to participate in it.

The announcement drew particular outrage from Rudy Washington, who served as deputy mayor under former Mayor Rudy Giuliani and organized an interfaith service at Yankee Stadium in the wake of the attacks.

“This is America, and to have a memorial service where there’s no prayer, this appear to be insanity to me,” Washington told the Wall Street Journal. “I feel like America has lost its way.”

New York City Councilman Fernando Cabrera, a pastor at a Bronx church, said he was similarly shocked and disappointed that clergy would be excluded, feeling like it was “wiping out the recognition of the importance that spirituality plays on that day.”

But despite the fresh controversy, Bloomberg‘s position isn’t anything new. Religious leaders have never been included in the city’s official memorial.

The Wall Street Journal reports:

The mayor has said he wants the upcoming event to strike a similar tone as previous ceremonies.

“There are hundreds of important people that have offered to participate over the last nine years, but the focus remains on the families of the thousands who died on Sept. 11,” said Evelyn Erskine, a mayoral spokeswoman.”

Still, Bloomberg critics have pointed out that the mayor has hardly taken a hands-off approach regarding religion. He was a vocal supporter of the so-called “Ground Zero mosque,” and earlier this month said he thinks religious symbols should be allowed at the 9/11 museum, even as an atheist group mounted a legal challenge to block the inclusion of a cross formed from steel beams found in the World Trade Center rubble.

The flap over religious leader participation is just the latest fall out regarding the ceremony.

Last week, The Blaze reported this story about the decision not to allow 9/11 first responders to attend the ceremony. The mayor’s office gave a similar reason at the time as well, saying first responders have not been invited to any of the previous nine services, but critics said this was the first year they were specifically barred from attending at all.

      Perhaps Hurricane Jesus will hit on 9/11 and prove the point that Our Lord protected so many and saved so many lives that horrific day. If no one else shows up, at least our Lord should be welcome.Who the Heck is Bloomberg to disallow an opening prayer to a memorial service…. Is he unAmerican or simply an Atheist? New York, you need to yell loudly at this exclusion. I for one will not watch the anniversary if our first responders and my Lord are not invited. One of the first to die was the Fire Dept Chaplain……. so now we disregard his sacrifice altogether.????? Speak out America, these progressive Liberals are ruining our cities and our nation…..       Presidents have always been sworn in on one religious book exclusively, and that is the Bible. When POTUS invokes a blessing upon this nation, it has always been “God bless America,“ not ”Allah bless America,” nor has that phrase ever been officially banned from a presidential speech because of its religious content.

      The decision to exclude prayer from this ceremony can be traced all the way to Barack Hussein, the commie Muslim. Bloomberg is just in lockstep with this administration’s policy of NOT OFFENDING ISLAMISTS.

      This is a repeat of what Barack Hussein did on May 5th, when instead of observing the National Day of Prayer, the commie Muslim and his followers celebrated Cinco de Mayo. The common denominator in both instances is to trample on and ultimately destroy our Judeo-Christian roots.

      So why do Christians insist on turning prayer into a public event? This is yet another case when Christians completely ignore what Jesus said and just do what they want.

Let’s see, who else isn’t “one of us?” Blacks, women, gays, children, their pets, people from Dar 4!! The list is endless, once you start down that raod of hate. Everyone was there that day, all should be there today. By the mayor, you’re banning your own people or have you forgotten the Christ was a Jew and so are all who believe.     So what if there are no religious leaders at this event. And if there was? Would this pseudo religious presence relieve the hearts of Americans that Government and religion belong in bed together? We don’t demand our places of work have religious leaders supplied; we don’t go to sports events hoping to see a multi religious prayer service. And as for Bloomberg and Religion, do we even want to see what he would permit? I feel sorry for the emergence responders, they got sold out on this, but I say leave the multi religion BS out of it.

      I kind of see Bloomberg’s point. The victims included people of all religions, and no religion. If we have Christian clergy, how many and from which churches? Would the presence of an imam or two sully the event? Do we really want Native American shamans, just because some of their ancestors lived at Ground Zero? We can be sure that affiliations, public statements, sex life and sources of income will be thoroughly aired in all cases. There will surely be a blurb on The Blaze if some clearly hates-America clergyman or woman slips in.

      On the other hand, many if not most people will see this event as an act of mourning, which brings in questins about death and its significance and its aftermath, if any, and that is what makes religion most necessary in the lives of most people. If it‘s really about the victims’ families, how many of them would want some element of their religion recognized as such? Should we be so crass as to poll them?

      Last time I checked the United States was not a Church State. Would you like it to be? As far as majority, which religion holds that majority??? Christians, Jews, Muslims??? are we to favor one over the other? Or are we talking Unitarianism, in that case, my point about it being “pseudo religion” free for all is correct. But a simple point I can make is this; religion can’t be shoved in the faces of the people or they will just end up rejecting it all together. This is the work of man not God.

      Rob_A – This Republic was founded on Christian principels. We believe in God, or most of us do. It would be appropriate to have a prayer from a Rabbi and a Pastor, but certainly not a Muslim. Australia has come out with very strong language essentially saying – we are a Christian nation, you are welcome in our country but you have to adopt to our values and constitution.     So what exactly is the problem here? That someone from the clergy isn’t making a speech at the event? As someone below mentioned, they couldn’t just pick one religion and say no to others. They aren’t saying no one can invoke spirituality at all. Honestly, you guys claim you love individualism but demand the government sponsor a religious figure that wouldn’t speak for everyone.

Our Churches have always been a place for remembrance. Go ask the Irish American firefighters that lost so many men and women on that horrible day back in September of 2001.     I also heard he‘s not allowing any ny’ers to pray for God’s protection against the incoming hurricane. I really don’t think this guy is a jew. He’s keeping all Christian ministers out, but supporting the mosque at ground zero !

      Indeed, we will, and yet I figure if anyone who is a declared Atheist or Imam asked to attend they would be allowed to do so.

      exactly. people will still pray.
      besides, you let in a priest to say something, then you also have to have the rabbi do his thing, then the muslim preacher, then a hindu priest, etc. etc. etc… the guys right, the focus should be on the people that died, and their families. i wouldn’t want this to be a religious or political event.

      Bloomberg’s left the Republican Party and be declared an independent on June 19, 2007,
