Over 2,000 Fetuses Found in Thai Buddhist Temple

BANGKOK (AP) — Thai police investigating a strong smell emanating from a Buddhist temple have found more than 2,000 fetuses hidden in the complex’s morgue that appear to have come from illegal abortion clinics.

During an initial investigation at the temple in Bangkok on Tuesday, police discovered piles of plastic bags containing more than 300 fetuses. Police Lt. Col. Kanathud Musiganont said workers pulled more bodies from the temple’s morgue Friday. More than 2,000 have been unearthed from vaults where bodies are traditionally interred pending cremation, which under some circumstances can take place years after death.

Abortion is illegal in Thailand except under three conditions — if a woman is raped, if the pregnancy affects her health or if the fetus is abnormal.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said Friday that more must be done to prevent illegal abortions but that his government would not revise the abortion-related laws. He said his government has discussed the matter and believed that “the existing laws are appropriate and flexible enough.”

Several people have already been arrested in the case: two undertakers for hiding bodies to conceal the cause of death and an abortion clinic employee on charges of operating an unlicensed medical clinic and performing abortions. The undertakers could each be sent to prison for up to one year and fined 2,000 baht ($67). The clinic employee — who police said confessed she had delivered the fetuses to the morgue workers starting early this year — could face up to five years in jail and a fine of 10,000 baht ($333).

Police Col. Sombat Milintachinda said the fetuses found Friday seemed to have been for a longer period of time than those found earlier in the week.

According to the police, Suchart Poomee, 38, one of the undertakers being questioned by the police, confessed Tuesday he had been hired by illegal abortion clinics to destroy the fetuses. He said he had been collecting the fetuses since November last year. It was not clear why they had not yet been cremated.

Despite having a huge and active sex industry, many Thais are generally conservative on sexual matters, and Buddhist activists especially oppose liberalizing abortion laws.

Public Health Minister Jurin Laksanavisith said around 1 million Thai women get pregnant each year, with 60,000 suffering miscarriages, and another 80,000 getting legal abortions. He gave no estimate for the number of illegal abortions.

Illegal abortions, he said, reflects a problem in society. “It requires efforts from both the government and the private sector to promote better understanding about sex among the Thai youngsters,” said Jurin.

Suriyadeo Tripathi, the director of Thailand’s National Institute for Child and Family Development, said young people were getting mixed messages, and sex education needs to be improved.

“On the one hand, you see many campaigns trying to promote safer sex, but on the other, a lot of people still strongly encourage abstinence and retain a stigma against premarital sex,” he said.

    This is so sad, it breaks my heart. My daughter had to move back home with me. Last year she had my frist grand child. I was lucky enough to be able to stay home, thanks for the unemployment, lord obama. However, I’ve been able to watch this little boy grow. Birth is a miricle.Watching him come along, and develope from being in my arms, to running through the house has cured me of thinking that the few cells were just that. It’s a human, from the begining.

    I’m not sure how a Buddhist Temple became entangled with this story. There were not Buddhist monks mentioned in the story, other than abortion clinic personnel. To the writer of this story: please make sure that you don’t drag Buddhism into the Christian/Islam circus war that is currently underway. Buddhism is a powerful yet peaceful religion that has been observing from the sidelines the ridiculous stone age behavior of these two religions going at each other throats. thank you!

    Something needs to be done in the US regarding our men traveling to this area just for the sake of the liberal sex industry. I’m sure a good percentage of these unwanted babies (lives) could have been prevented if we, as a people, would get tougher regarding the root of our involvement in this sex industry and it’s perpetuation. It’s not the end-all for this travesty, but it is one attack.

      I’m an Agnostic and I honestly believe it is wrong to murder humans in any way except in defense of yourself (this includes your family – pets too – or your personal property), your country or the public in general.
      I am moral to a fault and I believe that women these days need to keep their legs shut (sorry if my verbiage offends). Rape/incest in my opinion, is the only acceptable reason for abortion because I see mother’s health as being secondary.
      I am also a proud American and have absolutely NO PROBLEM with people believing in God or Allah or Buddha or the Trimurti or whatever their belief happens to be so long as they respect me and mine. That is what the founding fathers intended, a nation of laws without exception and no special privileges for this group or that. That is why we have freedom OF religion and not freedom FROM religion.
      I could go on and on.
      Now tell me… do I need to leave?!?!?

      Leagal or not the abortions will have the same procedures performed. So why is one more humane than the other?

      And the federal goverment has NO ******* BUISINESS PAYING FOR ABORTIONS! Legal or not it is not the federal goverments business. Period.

      Isn‘t Thailand one of the places in Asia pedophiles from ’western’ countries go to have semi legal sex with little children?? John Walsh just did a special on Cambodia involving that issue. I guess only the sickest perv wants to F*** a pregnant 12 year old! DISTURBING state of affairs. It‘s funny with all these liberal ’activists’ you never hear much about the child sex trade.

      Your logic is impecable. If I may add, that we can never stop someone from murdering another person, so therefore we should legalize murder. That way it can all be done in the open and not in the back alleys. This is a warped and preposterous line of reasoning. As others have said whether it is done in a sterile environment or in a basement in some deserted alley it is a barbaric and disgusting practice.
