Over 2,500 Faith Leaders Sign Letter Asking Obama to Uphold Religious Freedom

The last problem any candidate needs just months out from a tough presidential campaign season is to find him or herself embroiled in an epic war with people of faith. But in the first two months of 2012, this is exactly what President Barack Obama is facing. As the days progress, the rhetoric against his administration’s contraceptive mandate — particularly among religious leaders and communities — continues to intensify. On Monday, evangelical pastors joined Roman Catholic clergy in an effort to rail against the policy.
During the National Religious Broadcasters convention, an annual event that focuses on faith and media, Family Research Council President Tony Perkins spoke about the mandate. Perkins, among others, objects to the Obama administration’s mandate that all employers — including religious institutions, non-profits and hospitals — cover contraception, Plan B and sterilizations, among other women’s health services (read The Blaze’s extensive coverage of this debate).

During his address, he claimed that more than 2,500 pastors and evangelical leaders have signed a letter to Obama urging him to reconsider the mandate. The letter reads, in part (you read the rest here):
This mandate was not necessary, nor warranted under the provision of “preventive care services for women” contained in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Worse still is the fact that the mandate essentially ignores the conscience rights of many Catholic and Protestant Americans. Our country was founded on certain freedoms, the first of which is the freedom of religion. The ability of a religious person to follow their conscience without fearing government intervention has long been a protected right for Americans. It is unfathomable to picture a country that would deny religious freedoms. [...]
The contraceptive mandate with the requirement that there will be no co-pay to the patient means millions of Americans will incur the additional cost for these drugs and devices. Forcing religious entities to do the same, despite objections of good conscience, is a severe blow to our religious liberty. Thomas Jefferson drafted the Virginia Act for Establishing Religious Freedom in 1779, which passed in 1786, and set the stage for the First Amendment. In it, Jefferson states: “to compel a man to furnish contributions of money for the propagation of opinions which he disbelieves, is sinful and tyrannical.” Consequently, we ask that you would reverse this decision and protect the conscience rights of those who havebiblically-based opposition to funding or providing contraceptives and abortifacients.
LifeSiteNews.com explains the importance of this issue in evangelical circles:
This is not a Catholic issue. This is a religious freedom issue. As a matter of fact, as Catholic Philly reported on February 14, and another recent poll indicated, Evangelicals oppose the contraception mandate more than any other religious group…
Considering that most Protestants and non-Catholic Christians do not stand in opposition to contraception, this support is noteworthy. Of course, Plan B, which is dubbed by some to be an abortion-inducing drug, is seen as potentially problematic by some Protestants.

Tony Perkins
“This is not a Catholic issue,” Perkins reiterated. “We will not tolerate any denomination having their religious freedom impinged upon by the government.”
Others joined Perkins in chastising the Obama administration and pledging to fight the regulation. Richard Land, president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, promised to challenge the mandate both in court and in Congress.
“We are not going to stand by and allow our God-given rights, protected by the Constitution, to be atrophied, neutered, confined and restricted,” he said.
Watch Perkins and Land discuss these issues, below:
The spirit of these proclamations is one of religious freedom, regardless of whether one is a Catholic or stands in opposition to birth control. It is this sentiment that has led Glenn Beck to take the same stance. As The Blaze reported yesterday, Beck is seeking to form a collective comprised of people who espouse diverse theological views, but who share a passion and willingness to stand up for religious freedom.
As evidenced through his work, he has long encouraged people of all faiths to stand together — distinct and separate in their beliefs — but united in their support of everyone to practice those ideals without persecution.
Read more about Beck’s trip to Rome over the weekend, where he discussed these issues with Catholic leaders and pledged his support.

Does this mean that I can pay less taxes because my religion is against war? Does this mean the Catholic Church can force their beliefs on non-Catholics working at a Catholic hospital by making it too costly for them to get contraceptives?

Posted on February 21, 2012 at 1:05pm@ JZS….still at it I see huh? War is something that is done in defense of the entire nation to preserve the union. Contraceptives however fall into a slightly different category. Also, supporting a military cannot be done individually. Contraceptives however are rather inexpensive to purchase and many free clinics already give free contraceptives. If you live in this country you have no choice but to be a citizen, however, if you feel that strongly about contraceptives and them being provided for you free of charge work for someone else that has no problem with it. There is also such a thing as a conscientious objector that allows one to NOT serve in the military if it defies your conscious. Do you want to do away with that? Since we are comparing things here. We know your answer in that case, don’t we? Also, handing out free contraceptives is not a matter of life and death of a sick child that might die without proper treatment is it? And again free contraceptives are easy to obtain if they are really desired without violating the conscious of religious people. How about allowing an opt out based on matters of conscience like we do in the case of military service? Or are you against both?

Posted on February 21, 2012 at 1:10pm@ JZS….I have a question for you. What kind of society do you envision as being the most desirable? One where the benevolent state and politicians govern all aspects making us all “equal”? Or do you uphold individual freedom and responsibility? Or maybe one with no religion in it at all? I would just like to hear you describe the society you dream of and government’s role in it.

Too costly?
When a drug is invented that will remove all liberal tendencies from our species, I will expect the government to mandate that they are made available for free, to all.
As a “Health issue” of course.

Posted on February 21, 2012 at 4:27pmOther Hand says, “War is something that is done in defense of the entire nation to preserve the union.” Certainly WWII did. What about the Vietnam War? Was that fought to preserve the union? You may remember, 50,000 dead, billions spent, and in the end, the communists took over anyway. That war had nothing to do with “preserving the union.” Nor did the Iraq war. The Korean war was about preserving the union either. You’re talking about the Civil War and WWII I guess. Your premise is false.
Free clinics that give away contraceptives? You mean Planned Parenthood? You mean the ones that conservatives are determined to close? Who supports these free clinics? Tax dollars in part? And, of course, if the new wave of laws that define a person being born at the moment of conception, that will outlaw hormonal birth control and IUDs, since those methods don’t prevent conception.
“Also, handing out free contraceptives is not a matter of life and death of a sick child that might die without proper treatment is it?” If you mean with respect to this false application of the First Amendment, yes, it is the same.
Actually, you should read about Employment Division v. Smith. In the majority decision, conservative, Catholic Justice Scalia wrote, ““To permit this (read the case) would be to make the professed doctrines of religious belief superior to the law of the land, and in effect to permit every citizen to become a law unto himself…”

Offering information, correcting false premises, and debunking blatant lies are a waste of time and only keep us off track and on the defensive. Will we keep letting him shape and sidetrack the debate or leave him alone to squabble? Don’t allow your good intentions to aide him in high jacking these posts. This is not a religious freedom issue. This is a political issue preying on the fear among the religious that their freedom is being taken away. Call it what it is: an attempt to derail Obamacare by bloating it with loopholes and exceptions to then argue it needs to be scrapped.
Now, if you agree with that plan, that’s another topic entirely. But dressing it up as religious freedom? Duplicitous at best, heresy at worst.

“No Obama already filled it full of “loopholes and exceptions” for his buddies. This is about “hanging together or hanging separately.””
And some of the loopholes include
1. Churches and houses of worship are exempt
2. Religiously affiliated institutions do not need to directly pay the costs of procedures they find contrary to their faith. They cannot, however, deny insurance to their employees; and that insurance may contain these provisions.
At this point, it’s only on the employees to decide how to use their pay and benefits. Just because insurance covers birth control does not mean employees are forced to use it; but if they want it, it’s an option for them now. If it‘s the behavior that’s objectionable, then have the organization become a private institution, pay taxes, and create a rule that bans anyone on birth control from working there.

They can use their own pay for what ever they want. Their benefits come from the employer who pays for them (or a large part) An employer should not have to provide something he feels is morally objectionable. If employees don‘t like what’s offered they are free to work somewhere else.

“They can use their own pay for what ever they want. Their benefits come from the employer who pays for them (or a large part).”
Their pay also comes from the employer who pays for them. An insurance company is paid, but the benefits come from that company, not the employee.
“An employer should not have to provide something he feels is morally objectionable.”
Tell me what Christian religion (outside perhaps Christian Scientists) finds medical insurance morally objectionable? What is done with that insurance is on the employee, not the employer.

Posted on February 21, 2012 at 11:01am100% right. People should be free to disagree with Obamacare (especially how it will raise costs on all of us); but to carry on this issue claiming it is about “religious freedom” is using people’s fear for their religion for purely political reasons. There are three reasons for this argument:
1. The Catholic Church is tired of being portrayed as sexual abusers, and have immediately jumped into the sympathetic victim role.
Report Post »2. The effort of conservative politicians hope to overthrow Obamacare by bloating it with loopholes (ie: Christian Scientists don’t believe in any medical care. Do we now say that a CS-owned business unrelated to worship can choose to keep their employees uninsured?). These loopholes will increase costs (again, to be paid by us, the taxpayers), and hopefully will gain support to overthrow Obamacare.
3. The conservative Protestant denominations and politicians both are hoping this can be used as an anti-Obama slogan in 2012. Chanting “we demand religious freedom!“ is a lot more persuasive than ”we demand women cannot have their reproductive health services covered by insurance companies!”

Posted on February 21, 2012 at 10:52amRead about the American civil war and quit talking nonsense. It was bloody, nasty and will be fough in your own living room..not just on tv.
