Too Far? Satirical Rutgers Paper Publishes Fake Pro-Hitler Article Under Jewish Student’s Name

In December, The Blaze penned a report about Jewish students at Rutgers who claim that they have been harassed, intimidated and discriminated against on campus. One of those students, Aaron Marcus, came forward to discuss what he believes is an anti-Semitic environment. This week, as the battle over the climate at Rutgers continues, Marcus finds himself at the center of what he believes is a cruel, un-called for and anti-Jewish attack.
In what Young America‘s Foundation’s Ron Meyer called “a sick attempt to be funny, The Daily Medium — a satirical, student-led campus newspaper — published a fake article attributed to Marcus. The piece, which was titled, “What About the Good Things Hitler Did?” and published along with a picture of the Jewish student, was penned to appeared as though Marcus had written it.
The Medium, which calls itself the “Entertainment Weekly of Rutgers,” is apparently known for snarky and comedic content. But in an exclusive interview with The Blaze, Marcus said he hadn’t seen anything quite like this during his three years at Rutgers. He says that this, teamed with other issues that have unfolded at the school, seems to showcase that the campus is “mainstreaming anti-Semitism.”
“[In the past, they've] always used aliases,” he said, going on to lament the fact that his picture was PhotoShopped and that his name was “stolen” in an effort to provide praise to Hitler.
In an e-mail to The Blaze, Professor Ronald Miskoff, who is one of two advisers overseeing the paper, said that “this is a longtime practice of The Medium” (pretending to be a student without an alias).
“And the Rutgers community is aware that the American tradition of satire, caricature, and parody are the main thrusts of the publication,” Miskoff continued.
Meyer pulled out some of the more controversial lines in the article:
- “What about the good things Hitler did?”
- “I couldn’t help but think that history has given the Third Reich and its leaders a bad rap.”
- “More importantly, the surviving member of the Jewish faith were inspired by these ‘atrocities’ to move to Palestine… and which I think would not have happened without the help of ol’ Adolf.”
- “So the next time you are driving in a car, watching the movie ‘Armageggon’ or walking past Hillel, be sure to give Hitler a little thanks. I know I will.”
“Hillel” seems to be referring to the campus group (Rutgers Hillel) that works to celebrate Jewish culture.
Here’s a screen shot of a portion of the article that was published with his name and image:

Screen shot from The Daily Medium
“Rutgers has perpetually done nothing to protect Jewish students,” he explains. “If these types of things happened to other students on campus they would be taken care of immediately, but when they happen to Jewish students and particularly pro-Israeli students — they are ignored.”
Marcus went on to claim that the school has “made it permissible to be anti-Semitic on campus.” He says the university, which prides itself on being the most diverse in the country, is “only diverse if it’s not Jews.” He went on to describe the article’s publication as causing “an emotional pain,” as his family was personally effected by the Holocaust.
“I come from a family where my grandparents lost large portions of family in the Holocaust and it’s obviously a very emotional event in history that I don’t take lightly,” he explained.
The Rutgers student went on to describe confused phone calls he received following the article’s publication.
“It’s really disgusting,” he added, going on to describe phone calls and text messages he has received from friends and classmates who thought the article may have legitimately come from him. See, Marcus writes a column for The Daily Targum, another campus newspaper.
“People actually thought I wrote this,” he said. “People thought I wrote it because they used the identical template for how my column usually runs.”
Below the article, a short “biography” reads that Marcus is, “very excited to be graduating this semester and plans to grow up to be very rich, cause a bunch of problems and then blame poor people for all of them, thereby getting a tax break”:

According to Marcus, this isn’t the first time he has been tied to Hitler on campus — though it is the first time his name has directly been mentioned in print.
“I am seeking legal council but right now,” he explained. “It’s not that I want to sue them, but there’s been so much inaction … this is really my boiling point.”
Myer goes on to sum the situation up as follows:
This type of anti-Semitism is shocking and should be denounced by the school.
Rutgers University has already been under a federal investigation for anti-Semitism against Marcus and other Jews on campus. Young America’s Foundation and The Blaze reported last year on the violent threats made by students and faculty against Marcus’ life.
Marcus is a courageous defender of Israel and conservatism on campus—an unpopular duo. His real newspaper column in the Daily Targum (Rutgers’ more legitimate paper), titled “Marcus my Words,” courageously promotes freedom. Yet, this is the kind of filth he gets in return.
Below, watch Marcus discuss some of the issues he claims the Jewish population on his campus has faced:
While the article is immensely offensive, it must be noted that the outlet considers itself satirical in nature. Still, some will likely agree with Marcus that this is stepping over a line of acceptable print.
“The articles are vetted by editors,” Miskoff explained. “They are not filtered through the faculty or the administration, although the two advisers…do have discussions with the editors about past issues and any problems the newspaper encounters.”
The newspaper, of course, is no stranger to controversy.
“The Medium has gone through many phases, sometimes preferring to be a test of the First Amendment, and other times preferring to mimic other satire publications such as The Onion,” the newspaper’s web site reads. “Its current form is a synthesis of these two styles.”
Update: The university is currently investigating the incident, with Rutgers President Richard McCormick admitting that the newspaper went too far.

Posted on April 6, 2012 at 10:32amPublishing this article the way they did was wrong, but the irony here is that Jews continue to support the obama administration. We may soon see history repeat istelf, if not in America, then possibly Egypt. I do not understand how Jews can support this obamanation, not now, not ever. Can someone please explain it? Americans need to educate themselves on our Constitution so they can understand this country, how it is supposed to work, and see how far we have strayed from it… I include myself in this. I graduated early and did not have American Government in High School. My understanding was limited. I don‘t know if I’m allowed to put this in here, but I hope they post it. I enrolled in a FREE on-line class at Hillsdale College called Constitution 101. The lectures are professionally recorded, and you can view them at your convenience. Reading materials are provided too, if you want to learn more, but just listening to the lectures is amazing, and it’s all FREE. If we are going to save this country, we need the ammunition to do it, and that begins with understanding what makes America, America. Please take the time to check this out. http://www.hillsdale.edu/constitution/ It really is free. I do not work for them, but I am glad I have invested the time. I have learned a great deal. Knowledge empowers! The government knows this, and you will not see them teach our kids the Constitution as Hillsdale College has done here. Please check it out and share this information.

Posted on April 7, 2012 at 1:00am@ Jaycen…really? I think you have your parties seriously confused. While th GOP and conservatives have moral values, we do not enact legislation t force them, rather, we expect individuals to enact personal restaints upon themselves based upon certain guiding Turths, established long ago witht the writing of the Bible. As our founders intended and wrote about, a republic cannot stand without a moral and religious people.
The leftists however want to dictate ever aspect of life by actually enacting legislation to force particulcer behaviors upon us.
The god of the left is the environment and to make sure we have no choice but to worship upon that altar, all avenues and use of fossil fuels are regulated and stymied so that we either acquiesce to that god or pay exorbitant fees to not worship there.
Another god of the leftist is the god of healthy foods. This god intervenes in such ways that a duly packed lunch is deemed unfit by the food police and replaced by the gods who know better than parents
Then there is the 2700 page leviathan god of Obamacare, that attempts to regulate every possible aspect of living simply because we are alive and living legally within the confines of our sovereign borders.
And to top it all off, we have the EPA who wants to regulate breathing because our mere exalations may damage the first god – earth.
And anything the right may believe but doesn’t ever attempt to legislate except the sanctity of all life is the same a

Posted on April 6, 2012 at 9:28amHere’s some irony. The name “Targum”, is a classic Jewish word, Aramaic for “translation”, usually interpretive translations. But it isn’t a Jewish paper; the masthead says it days to 1869. This is a reflection of the affection that Americans of earlier generations had for “Hebrew culture”, like the Hebrew writing on the seals of some Ivy league colleges.
By the way, I used to spend a lot of time in the Rutgers library, when I lived in the borough directly east of the university, Highland Park. Highland Park and its neighbor to the North and east, Edison, have a decent sized and rather strong Orthodox Jewish community, although in my day both a Synagogue and the kosher bakery on the main street seemed to be disguising themselves.

Report Post »The specific issue in which this was written is an issue where the Medium attempts to mimic the legitimate Rutgers newspaper, The Daily Targum. In this “Daily Medium” as they call it, they borrow the font and layout of the Targum, for which Marcus writes a column. Marcus was almost certainly chosen for his views supporting conservatism and Israel (which unfortunately are considered controversial). Some of you may remember another Blaze article in which Marcus was the target of hateful language from a university professor.

So if I capture you on my iPhone and post the video on YouTube, does that now make you a public figure so I can then say all manner of untruths about you and attibute things to you, steal your name and paste it to a story parising and loving the work of the Klan, that would be ok right?

Please google defamation law and get back in touch. You have to be damaged by the falsehood to be defamed. Because this newspaper is known to be saterical it will be very difficult for Mr. Marcus to prove damages.
Lucy,
I’m not saying what The Medium did was hunky dory. I think it was pretty tasteless. Because I do not believe Mr. Marcus has a good case for Defamation it does not automatically follow that I think the medium’s peice is in any way amusing. It was tasteless. Being tasteless does not equate to defamation.

Posted on April 6, 2012 at 8:25amIf we are led to believe Marcus’ actually said these things on his own then this is not satire. Printing the article with Marcus’ name on it itself is libel. If this is intended to be satire the publisher needs to make it clearer that it is satire.

Maybe. What I’m saying is that because this publication is known for satireical content and not “real” news it is unlikely that Mr. Marcus would be able to show his reputation was damaged by the publication or that people really believed he wrote the piece in question.
Again, I think what “The Medium” published was incredibly tasteless, tacky, and simply not funny. I‘m of the opinion that doesn’t mean it will be liable for any sort of defamation action. Perhaps there is another legal theory that could be offered if Mr. Marcus wants to sue.

They are in their eighties today. The husband was forced to dig a mass grave. He was young and considered “HEALTHY” in spite of the lack of food. After the grave was dug he witnessed his Father and two older brothers marched to the edge of the pit he had dug and executed. They fell into the grave he had been made to dig. When it was over he got to shovel dirt onto the grave.
His wife, 16 at the time, was also considered “HEALTHY. She witnessed the deaths of her parents, her sisters, and her brothers to the “SHOWERS”! She went through unspeakable horrors at the hands of Hitler’s S.S..
They were both at Auschwitz. They both survived. They came to the United States. They are an asset to this nation.
And yes…,those trains did run on time. They did .And when those trains that ran on time reached their destination? Millions experienced unimaginable horror.
