OWS Inspiration Mag Calls for May Occupation of Chicago G8 in the ‘Tradition’ of 1968

Adbusters, the radical, Vancouver-based anti-consumerist magazine, credited by many media outlets for launching the Occupy Wall Street protests, has put out an ad calling for 50,000 protestors to “Occupy” the G8 summit in May.
The Adbusters ad shows a picture of policemen beating up a defenseless protestor, and comes with the caption: “In the Tradition of the Chicago 8.” The Chicago 8 were radicals who incited riots in Chicago during the 1968 Democratic convention. The 1968 convention unrest became so legendary that the band Crosby, Stills, Nash (and Young) wrote a song about it called “Chicago.” The “tradition” of the Chicago 8 included calling for displays of public fornication and attacking police.
Hey you redeemers, rebels and radicals out there,
Against the backdrop of a global uprising that is simmering in dozens of countries and thousands of cities and towns, the G8 and NATO will hold a rare simultaneous summit in Chicago this May. The world’s military and political elites, heads of state, 7,500 officials from 80 nations, and more than 2,500 journalists will be there.
And so will we.
On May 1, 50,000 people from all over the world will flock to Chicago, set up tents, kitchens, peaceful barricades and #OCCUPYCHICAGO for a month. With a bit of luck, we’ll pull off the biggest multinational occupation of a summit meeting the world has ever seen.
And this time around we’re not going to put up with the kind of police repression that happened during the Democratic National Convention protests in Chicago, 1968 … nor will we abide by any phony restrictions the City of Chicago may want to impose on our first amendment rights. We’ll go there with our heads held high and assemble for a month-long people’s summit … we’ll march and chant and sing and shout and exercise our right to tell our elected representatives what we want … the constitution will be our guide.
And when the G8 and NATO meet behind closed doors on May 19, we’ll be ready with our demands: a Robin Hood Tax … a ban on high frequency ‘flash’ trading … a binding climate change accord … a three strikes and you’re out law for corporate criminals … an all out initiative for a nuclear-free Middle East … whatever we decide in our general assemblies and in our global internet brainstorm – we the people will set the agenda for the next few years and demand our leaders carry it out.
And if they don’t listen … if they ignore us and put our demands on the back burner like they’ve done so many times before … then, with Gandhian ferocity, we’ll flashmob the streets, shut down stock exchanges, campuses, corporate headquarters and cities across the globe … we’ll make the price of doing business as usual too much to bear.
Jammers, pack your tents, muster up your courage and prepare for a big bang in Chicago this Spring. If we don’t stand up now and fight now for a different kind of future we may not have much of a future … so let’s live without dead time for a month in May and see what happens …

I’m no fan of the G8, but the theory of “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” was discredited centuries ago.
I strongly suspect this is being orchestrated to start the massive Purge/Push that the Leftists want, deliberately in a city that more or less is their ideological and political strong hold, ergo, nothing will be done to stop them, they’ll cause death and mayhem, and the government “will be forced” to act in draconian ways. The G8 is making decisions for all of us that help none of us. Only the wealthiest behind the scenes. Until now it has gone unnoticed. They are a perfect fit for the Beast in Revelations (see chapters 13 and 17 for the 8th head) when combined with the rest of the G20 and are the single greatest sign that the real end of this age is coming and Christ is returning. If the G20 becomes the new government in the coming years, say goodbye to your rights and freedoms as they will render the Constitution moot under a new world wide government NOT under God. To tax someone, they have to be here…Rich people take their money out of our economy because YOU keep trying to take it..Businesses move out because YOU call them evil…I say make it the most lucrative atmosphere for all rich and big business to want to be here…That is what puts money in your pocket, money and business here in America..I have said it before and I’ll say it again…Toyota…they use more American crafted product to build there trucks here than any other motor company…They get the tax breaks that should go to the big three..You and your OWS ideas are what the problem is…For any foreign company to have better tax breaks than a company founded here, what do you think is gonna happen? America will be full of foreign companies taking your money elsewhere..And even American companies taking your money elsewhere..Can’t have a piece of the pie, if you give all the pie to another country.

They 99% is constructive, not destructive like the OWS people. I would also support “no nuclear weapons” in the Middle East, but how do they intend to get the crazy leaders of the Middle East to comply? If they try to protest in Iran, they will be summarily shot down (literally).

I see a world where one class of people who have to sell their time for money or starve and die in the streets while another class of people own property – stocks, companies, slums, what have you – that makes money for them and live a life of luxury, even during economic hard times.
One group people work for a living and receive next to nothing. One group of people own for a living and control almost everything. That is not a world I would call espousing the “ideas of freedom and liberty.” That is a world of slavery and heirarchy.
I do not want a single, centralized government controlling our lives. On the contrary. I want to tear down the centralized institutions of economic power, corporations and the ownership class, and replace them with democratic, cooperative models of a world of freedom and equality. That’s not government control – it’s workers controlling their factories, farmers controlling their farmlands. A world where everyone must work to earn, and earns nothing at the expense of another.
Freedom from political tyranny is meaningless without freedom from economic tyranny as well.

Report Post »Those that tell you you cannot be successful because someone else is are lying to you. In fact it is one of the oldest and darkest lies. Almost anyone in America can become a millionaire. Not true you say? 1000$ a month invested in safe, growth mutual funds for 20 years equals a multimillionaire. People do it every day despite ups and downs in the stock market. Some take risks and invest in business and become multimillionaires much faster. Some do neither and retire modestly on social security. That approach is not recommended but its their choice.
The poorest among us have flat screen television, a car, heating and air, cable/internet. And the most valuable asset the poorest among us have is the upward mobility that comes from effort. It happens every day despite those who say they can’t. There are multiple ways out of ones economic plight if you choose. I’ve done it and see people every day doing the same.
These are the very people you would destroy because you refuse to read and understand history. Refuse to see the difference in merit and entitlement. You refuse to see what is great about this country, that you have opportunity but not guaranteed results and it is solely up to you not the wall street guy or the mansion owner down the street. Understand what envy is.
Understand that you are advocating great destruction when you are knowingly or unknowingly supporting a communist revolution. Stalin called people like you “useful idiots”. Don’t be that.

No no no, of course not. I would just like to see credit unions and co-operatives and workplace democracy replace banks and corporations and CEOs. I’m not against the market, I’m against the institutions of power that rig it (and the political process) to their advantage (and that includes the government, by the way; were you to talk to some average OWS people earnestly you might find you’ve more in common than you realize).

Oh sure. But mass murder and repression have been carried out in the name of capitalism, as well (Augusto Pinochet of Chile comes to mind). Listen, if you want me to denounce the Soviet Union and everyone it controlled through the Comintern I will, but understand that the Soviet model is not the sort of thing anyone in OWS looks towards as a better world.

The best humanity can do is being fair, this is the equal versus fair argument.Most people do not get into leading things unless they are forced to, however there will always be those few people who want to control others either for greed or some sick sense of entitlement. While this is common in capitalism in the place of businesses, when we go along the lines that the OWS is most noted for it tends to be the government that is the bad guy. Businesses cant arrest people for speaking against them, neither can they declare martial law and shoot them. Governments can and have done this, as things stand now if enough people can boycott or refuse services provided by these companies we can keep in control of them. The kicker is that now a days through so much regulation and other restrictions placed by the gov we don’t have very many options. There is a way for us to change the situations we gave and it is laid out in our constitution and bill of rights, it’s called voting for those who agree with our views. We don’t need the big thousands of thousands marches that are going on we just need awareness. It start by you talking to a person then that person talking to a person. I believe the system we have isn’t broken just deteriorating, and we can stop it just not how OWS is voicing doing it.

Posted on January 30, 2012 at 4:49pm@ Vox….”A world where everyone must work to earn, and earns nothing at the expense of another.” Please, Mr. Answerman, explain that..See, the problem comes in at the end of that..You will always earn something at someones expense…Even something that is free is at someones expense..To farm your farmland is at an expense to the farmer..He sells his hard work to a consumer at the price he decides..Which means the consumer needs to give something at his expense to the farmer to receive the product…Even if the farmer gives you it for free, it is at the expense of the farmer..Why did the OWS people head to the church when they needed a place to go?..That was at the expense of others in that church, who were kind enough to allow it…Your protesting, and camping in no camping zones are at the expense of the city and it’s people..You claim you want equality at no ones expense, at the same time you are bringing an expense onto the people you want to join you…Your actions ARE AT SOMEONES EXPENSE…Double talking hypocrite.

Capitalism has lifted more out of poverty than any other system man has devised hands down. Is it perfect? It’s only as good as the people and its adherence to the rule of law. Which is why you don’t throw the baby out with the dirty bath water.
The occupy method, followed to its logical conclusion is destructive by nature. Same arguments from the communist revolutions of the past. For that matter just forget the word communist. Tear this system down and put some utopian system in its place and we all live happily ever after. It never works that way because the nature of men who seek power over others. This time will be different, they say. In this case, those that seek power over others are using the occupy movement to destroy capitalism. Ask occupiers what they want out of the movement and you’ll get a variety of answers ranging from straight up communism to simple anti corruption. You seek empowerment but by occupies methods you are only empowering the few that understand history and the old methods of division through envy, greed and entitlement. Yes, if you’re chanting “we are the 99%” you are carrying out the bidding of the very few who do not have your interest in mind. This happens over and over in history.
We all can agree on the corruption in the halls of power. No doubt. I seek to restore not destroy. Choose not to be a useful idiot.

I know this because the word on the street in Oakland is that the residents have had it with these occu-tards and it is “open season” on the whiney little bitches. Since Chicago has at least equal if not more violent gangs as Oakland, I expect there will be the same attitude toward them there. At the very least, they will be preyed upon viciously from the margins.

The Chicago police do not tolerate bad behavior and they move in swiftly and forcefully to make sure the revelers know who is boss. They are still the old Chicago Police we all know and love. If the Seattle anarchists come to Chicago, I am going to camp out on a parking garage and watched them get trampled by the mounted police while eating popcorn. Chicago and New York are possibly the best towns in the US for them to have a secure Nato and G8 summit. I live in the burbs and commute to the Loop everyday. Crooked politicians? Hell yes. The Daley Machine is still in full force. Rahm is reigning the corruption and unions slowly. By no means his he Daley’s pet. He is doing a great job. I would not have voted for him originally, but he has earned my trust. If I did live in Chicago proper, I would vote for him next election cycle. He is not the Obama puppet I thought he would be.
