BERWYN, Pa. (AP) — A new mosque recently opened in this well-to-do suburb of Philadelphia, but not many people noticed.
That was fine with leaders of the Islamic Society of Greater Valley Forge. Amid a tense national climate for U.S. Muslims, they did not seek publicity for the happy occasion, only continued peace with their neighbors: a Jewish synagogue next door and Baptist church across the street.
The Muslims’ good relations with other faiths and the town at large offers a stark contrast to American communities torn by anti-Islamic acts, including arson at the site of a planned mosque in Tennessee and a threatened Quran burning in Florida.
In New York, debate rages over a planned Islamic center and mosque near ground zero. And everywhere tensions are heightened because Friday’s joyous Muslim celebration of Eid al-Fitr falls a day before the somber ninth anniversary of 9/11.
But in Tredyffrin Township, about 20 miles northwest of Philadelphia, community members say a tradition of religious tolerance, combined with an educated population and small-town friendliness, have yielded years of harmonious coexistence.
“We have much more in common than not in common,” mosque president Mohammad Aziz said. “We are blessed with very good neighbors.”
Township officials conceded some trepidation among residents when the Islamic Society sought construction permits in 2008. The growing Sunni group planned to build on land behind the small house it had used as a mosque since 1994.
Most concerns were standard zoning issues like parking, traffic and stormwater runoff. But the concept of a mosque was jarring to some, despite Muslims having long worshipped at the site, said Judy DiFilippo, a township supervisor for 20 years until her retirement in January.
“It was something brand new to the community. Even though they were using an existing building, it wasn’t an obvious mosque,” DiFilippo said.
The plans were approved; construction and fundraising began in earnest, capped by the mosque opening on June 5. DiFilippo said there have been no problems, which she attributed to an “underlying theme of tolerance that just comes with this community.”
Yossi Kaplan, a Lubavitch rabbi at Chabad Jewish Center next door, said he was approached by people seeking his opposition to the project — but waved them off. The two faiths were enjoying solid relations, to the point where they shared parking lots and Muslims helped with tasks that Jews cannot perform on the Sabbath.
The rabbi expected nothing less from his neighbors, regardless of religion. This is America, Kaplan said, and this is how it’s supposed to be.
“We’re just good friends. We’re really good neighbors,” he said. “There’s never been any issues.”
The United States has seen a 58 percent increase in the number of mosques over the past decade, from 1,200 to roughly 1,900, according to Ihsan Bagby, a professor of Islamic studies at the University of Kentucky and a researcher on American mosques.
Yet many U.S. mosques are repurposed existing buildings, retrofitted to accommodate ritual washing areas and separate entrances for men and women. Sometimes they require odd configurations for prayer so worshippers can face Mecca.
Thus the new $1.5 million mosque in Tredyffrin is truly an American Dream for Aziz. Since joining the congregation in 1998, he said, it has more than doubled in size as technology professionals arrived in the area from India and Pakistan.
The mosque has a prayer hall, library, multipurpose room, bathrooms with washing areas, WiFi and — most important — more space for the 60 or so families who worship there.
Except for dome-shaped accents around the vertical windows, it looks more like a community center than a house of worship. There are no minarets and no dome — cost-conscious omissions that Aziz said should help it blend in and attract younger generations.
“American mosques should take their own form … (and) be appealing and open to people, not just Muslims,” said Aziz, 57. “It is built for my children and my children’s children.”
Last week, the Pennsylvania chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations sponsored an event for community members to tour the mosque, learn about the faith, observe evening prayers and share dinner.
“If you get to know your neighbors, you are less inclined to be fearful of them,” CAIR-PA Executive Director Moein Khawaja said.
About 50 people came, including the Rev. John Loring, pastor of the Baptist Church in the Great Valley, just across the street. The congregation was founded in 1711 by Welsh immigrants seeking freedom to worship in Pennsylvania, then a colony that emphasized its welcome to settlers of all faiths.
“Respect for all religions is an important part of who we are,” Loring said.
Sally Bovais, 68, of Phoenixville, came with about 10 members of her nearby Presbyterian church. She said such events were important “to put a face to Muslim people.”
“The stereotype is really very dangerous,” Bovais said. “They espouse love and peace, and raise families and are involved in their faith. That’s part of the thread of our nation.”

Posted on September 10, 2010 at 11:02pmWhy is it that no one understands what the protest is about? It not the fact that it is a muslim it is the lack of sensitivity putting it so close to the trade center site. I don’t care what the joker inman says the site if a victory salute for the muslim jihadist. Why can’t they understand that. Our fearless leader stated today that we should be sensitive to the muslims about burning the koran. Where is his sensitivity to the 911 victims family? He talks out of both sides of his mouth and that is why a very large amount of people don’t trust him, including me. He also stated we could put up a church there, and a synagogue or a catholic church so why can’t we put up a mosque. A christian, jew or catholic did not attack the world trade center, muslim jehadist did and that is why we don’t want a mosque that close to the site.

Posted on September 10, 2010 at 3:56pmOk, first of all, this is nothing new. I grew up right up the street from where this is (and currently live about 10 miles away), and that mosque/community center has been there over 15 years. So I’m not sure how some extensive renovations = some kind of virgin cultural victory in that Americans are “accepting” of this being built — it has been there for a decade and a half without issue.
What it does show, however, (repeatin myself here) is that this Islamic center has had a presence in this American suburban community without issue for years. Tredyffrin Township is part of an affluent upper-middle class Philadelphia suburb; Conestoga High School is consistently one of the best in the state, along with neighboring township Radnor as well as Great Valley, all top schools in the state.
In other words, there’s a lot lot of rich white folk in this area, and there has never been an issue with this mosque here. So why is it being painted as such a victory now? It’s life as usual here. (I did always find it highly ironic to have the Islamic center and the synagogue literally right next to each other on the road)
I can tell you that if Flight 93 had crashed and burned in the farm fields of Duncans Farm behind this mosque instead of west-central PA, and this was suddenly a new mosque construction, people might have a problem with it just like they do in NYC.

Posted on September 10, 2010 at 11:48amOh please. You don’t “tolerate” the absolutely intolerant. I guess nobody saw the “seperate entrances for men and women” part.
While you all have your kumbaya moment, another house of worship devoted to the notion that Allah wishes all other religions and people to be subjugated to Islam has been enlarged. Islam is the antithesis of Western, Christian sensibilities.
The mosque, and the issue of Islam in general, are separate issues. The mosque is evidence of the absolute fraudulence of the notion that Islam desires any sort of accomodation for purposes of harmony and understanding. What sane person of honest motive would even *suggest* building a mosque anywhere near ground zero?
And now we get, “Give me my mosque, and nobody gets hurt.”
Currently in Paris, “peaceful and loving” Muslims routinely defy the law….barricading entire city blocks and engaging in public worship and prayer. This is in absolute defiance to the secular practice laws of France. These acts are to demonstrate their power, and the police and politicians of France are incapable of taking any action.
Anyone who believes that Islam can be accomodated is a fool.

Posted on September 10, 2010 at 4:20pm“It’s amazing this could take place peacefully, when Glenn Beck has made statements like the following surrounding the Cordoba house:”
Do you know the history of Cordoba?
Beyond the first two years of Muslim occupancy. You see, as year went on, the ruling class (the Muslims) became very fearful of their infidels living in the slums. After a while they declared that a tax would have to be paid for every Christian, Jew, or any other faith that wasn’t Islam. This allowed the Muslims to gain better knowledge of just how many Christians/Jews/etc lived within the borders of Cordoba. However, when confronted with the numbers, they immediately began stripping freedoms from the people living in Cordoba. This was an attempt to break the Christians and Jews, to hopefully drive them out of the city. First it was another tax, then it was a law that if they forfeited their debts (debts to Muslim creditors that is) they would either be enslaved, or put to death. If you did pay your taxes you were also liable for those in your neighborhood who didn’t. Soon prisons were over crowded, full of Christians/Jews/etc. who could afford to pay for their brethren. Thus the Muslims gave them the choice, die a Christian/Jew/etc. or convert to Islam and be absolved of all crimes, debt, and be lifted from second class citizenship.

BTW, assuming your handle means either former military and now cop or MP, thank you for your service. No matter our political views, we can all appreciate it.

Posted on September 10, 2010 at 5:26pmI’m so tired of history being written by liars. Muslims didn‘t fly airplanes into those building and I couldn’t tell you who did but you have no evidence that a Muslim was flying the plane.
The US government took down those buildings so people like you could years later blame someone else while you beat your chest and tell everyone how patriotic you are.
Want to be patriotic? Find the real killers.

Posted on September 10, 2010 at 5:35pmIf you want to compare which faith killed the greatest number of people then you would have to include Hadj Amin al-Husseini the Mufti of Jerusalem. This man assisted Hitler in the extermination of millions.

Posted on September 10, 2010 at 5:42pmNo evidence it was the radicals? Al Qaeda has accepted responsibility for the act. Video tape shows the men in the airports. The paper trail, such as tickets, show they were on the planes. Countless phone calls by people on the plane describing who they were. What more proof do you want. I just love revisionists like you. Muslim Radicals didn’t attack us. There was no Holocaust. Open your eyes and except the truth!!!!
