Painting of Obama Burning Constitution Sparks Controversy: Free Speech, Offensive or Both?

Painting is an art form that often allows the artist to present an opinion. The latest work by artist Jon McNaughton does just that, portraying President Barack Obama burning the constitution in “One Nation Under Socialism” which has drawn its far share of detractors. McNaughton describes the new painting on his Facebook page:
“’I pledge allegiance to the United States of America,
And not to an ideology, which can never stand,
One nation under socialism, divisive,
With no liberty or justice for anyone.’This November, you will make a choice. Will you choose One Nation Under Socialism?”
The painting has already drawn over 700 shares and over 1,200 comments.
“I think what you are doing is bold and should be seen/heard by all Americans!!!” writes commenter Tamara Thomas. “Dead-on! A picture that says what our mainstream media will not,” says Vincent Brusio.
But not every commenter was a fan.
“I would love to see a painting like this of Romney and his Bain Capital Wall Street cronies laughing and stuffing money in their mouths as they rip off all the gullible right-wing dupes who think SOCIALISM for the rich fat cats who looted our country (not to mention the world economy is perfectly fine,” writes John Wages. “Grow up,” Billy Bey says simply.
New York Magazine Art Critic Jerry Saltz told CBSDC that the painting contained “bad academic derivative realism,” calling it “typical propaganda art, drop-dead obvious in message” and “visually dead as a doornail.”
“It panders and preaches to the converted and tells them what they already believe,” Saltz told CBSDC. “It has no graphic power of its own. It simply attempts to crawl into the body of that sort of illustration.”
McNaughton told CBSDC that he hopes his painting will get the “public talking about what the painting represents. Is Obama pushing a Socialist agenda on the American people?”
McNaughton further explained his painting in a video on Youtube:
McNaughton has previously painted the president stomping on the Constitution and a similar pledge painting illustrating one nation under God.
What do you think of McNaughton’s painting? Free speech at its best (and no different than previous attacks from the other side) or offensive?

Posted on March 21, 2012 at 3:29pmThat is a great looking painting of President O’Bummer in action, he certainly looks like he gained some extra weight in this rendering. That choice of fresh white shirt and red patterned silk tie is exceptional and add to his ultra manly authoritative demeanor. What a captivating charismatic leader!
There is no way such an important fictional portrait painter should have to be accountable for a little playful political pandering! He can be allowed to be refreshingly funny at times, and any stick-in-the-mud who takes this devilishly boyish painting seriously is guilty of having too harsh an eye for the arts! This clever Coloradan just wants thousands of us patriots to personally hang O’Bummer!

Look at the painting above… Note the progressives are all right of the pane and conservatives (in today’s standards) to the left. Really it is big government right and little government left in the original linear political spectrum.
Even W is with the progressives looking confused and pointing to the conservatives and JFK dead center. If you hover over each president, there is a little blurb on the right about them which will tell you why they are in their positions if you see the connections.
Note who is clapping…

Our country has slowly been led towards socialism for a century by both Democrats and Republicans. Big government ideology is the problem and Obama is just not afraid to speed up the progress to socialism by pushing the pedal to the floor. Posted on March 21, 2012 at 10:27pmLook, I’m not a fancy art critic or anything. But in my opinion that doesn’t look much like President Obama. And the fire and the ashes falling from it look kind of fake and cartoonish. And seriously, is the Constitution a single page? No, of course not, so that it not represented well, although I understand the symbolism.
The color balance isn’t bad, and I like the way he lightens mottled blue background around the President’s head. The artist definitely took an art class or two and learned some basics, or at least watched a few PBS programs on painting techniques. But in my view the artist should have tried for a more realistic image of the President, including the proportions of his body as somebody pointed out.
So, in conclusion, I‘d say it’s an okay painting. Might fetch $10 at a yard sell. Some of you might even pay more. But the artist should definitely keep his or her day job.

1) your comment is lumping all readers in the same camp, so it is false on its face.
2) In the link you provided, I see some commenters that respect the right to free speech, though the may disagree or take offense to the Anti-Christian art in the piece. They point out the hypocrisy of the progressives to praise free speech on the Anti-Christian and then bash pieces like this.
3) One targets God and faith which is above all and the most sacred (even to the founding fathers), the other is targeting a man who is fallible even though he holds the office of President (to which our founding fathers warned against) . There should be no sacred cows when it comes to art. It is free speech for a reason.
4) Your premise is hypocritical in nature. Art, like comedy, will have people who love one form but hate another. Some like Adam Sandler’s stuff, some like Bill Maher, some like 3 Stooges… I frankly don’t see a hypocrisy in preference. It is only hypocrisy if a person tries to oppress one or the other. You are demonizing people based on their preference of what they consider art and trying to oppress their views through ostracizing them (IE being the PC Police).
What is needed is tolerance, even on your behalf. I am not trying to ostracize you, but teach you the difference. However, there are some people that will be hypocritical as you state. However, they have their reasons ( I am sure, and it would be found in #3 above).

We are supposed to question and vent our government (especially the President and Congress). We are supposed to stand against the natural flow of government which is to assume more power. You really need to read the writings of Thomas Jefferson.
“A Bill of Rights is what the people are entitled to against every government, and what no just government should refuse, or rest on inference.”
“A wise and frugal Government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, which shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned. This is the sum of good government, and this is necessary to close the circlue of our felicities.”
“The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.”
“The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.”
“What country can preserve its liberties if its rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance?”
Thomas Jefferson, who was a President himself, would have approved judging from his quotes above.

Agreed, none of the candidates/office holders from Socialist Party A and Socialist Party B (for President) seem to be particularly beholden to the Constitution in any significantly real way, outside of RP, who clearly is not favored to get the nod (and who has his own flaws to deal with as well).
And agreed, he does have some kind of talent, that’s not a bad painting at all, almost hearkens back to classical painting techniques and color use. If the artist enjoyed it and felt he conveyed his message, then as far as I’m concerned, that’s a great thing, regardless of his intentions in the use and disposal of the art.

Posted on March 21, 2012 at 10:36pmI agree with the depiction in the painting, but hanging it on my wall would mean I would have to look at Obumma’s face and it would be in my home. That is not something that appeals to me.

Posted on March 21, 2012 at 12:50pmI love McNaughton’s artwork. Can’t wait for the next piece and I hope he goes farther. Maybe a montage of the Progressive Movement from Woodrow Wilson to Obama, and metaphors about how each progressive president has taken our liberties away.

Posted on March 21, 2012 at 12:50pmI love it as I have loved his previous work. He paints what is happening to our country under the Obama regime. Of course the left will hate it because it puts a visual aspect to what millions of Americans think.

The metaphor is right on and if Oblama gets another term, life could very well imitate art — literally.

Posted on March 21, 2012 at 4:11pmHow true, I think there is a hidden Satan somewhere in that painting, but, I can’t find it. Inhis other paintings of Patriotism Satan is hidden among the people ie “ Forgotten Man” “Peace is Coming” I still can’t find it in “Wake Up America” either.

Posted on March 21, 2012 at 12:48pmWhat the problem the man painted what Obama is doing. Art imitates live alot more than life imitates art. Obama is merely a cog on a bigger machine he’s the president so single him out is fine. But make no mistake getting him out of office won’t change much…..it’s going to take a more than an election to take back all the GOVERNMENT HAS STOLEN FROM AMERICAN CITIZENS

Posted on March 21, 2012 at 1:18pmNochristian – have no idea what you are talking about as I don’t know where God stands on the issue of the MSM messiah, President Obama. When it was President Bush in the White House they depicted him being assassinated and called it art. This is a portrait of President Obama burning the constitution, far less violent than what they did to his predecessor. It is also rather truthful – President Obama has done end runs around congress since he has taken office, attempting to enforce his agenda without going through that nasty process of congressional approval, especially after he lost the house in 2010. You can say you don’t like the painting but why you invoke God as not approving the artist is ludicrous. I think the good Lord would be more concern with the crucifix covered in ants, the Madonna with elephant dung or the crucifix in urine than He would be about Obama burning the constitution as a metaphor of his socialistic agenda.
