Pakistan Bans ‘Obscene’ Cell Phone Text Messages Including Words Like…‘Jesus’

ISLAMABAD (AP) — Texters in Pakistan better start watching their language.
Pakistan’s telecommunications authority sent a letter ordering cell phone companies to block text messages containing what it perceives to be obscenities, Anjum Nida Rahman, a spokeswoman for Telenor Pakistan, said Friday.
It also sent a list of more than 1,500 English and Urdu words that were to be blocked.
The order was part of the regulator’s attempt to block spam messages, said Rahman. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority refused to comment on the initiative.
Many of the words to be blocked were sexually explicit terms or swear words, according to a copy of the list obtained by The Associated Press.
It also included relatively mild terms like fart and idiot.
The reasons for blocking some words, including Jesus Christ, headlights and tampon, were less clear, raising questions about religious freedom and practicality. Any word could conceivably be part of a spam message.
The letter, which was also obtained by the AP, was dated Nov. 14 and gave cell phone companies seven days to implement the order.
Rahman, the Telenor spokeswoman, said her company first received the letter Thursday and was discussing how to proceed.
“It’s a big issue, so it is being examined carefully from all points of view,” said Rahman.
The letter said the order was legal under a 1996 law preventing people from sending information through the telecommunications system that is “false, fabricated, indecent or obscene.”
It also stated that free speech can be restricted “in the interest of the glory of Islam.”
Under pressure from Islamists, Pakistan has blocked pornographic websites and ones deemed anti-Islamic. Last year, it temporarily banned Facebook because of material on the site deemed offensive to Islam.

Would you object to the names given him in the scriptures? Once a Jehovah’s Witness asked me why I prayed to God without saying his name which she thought was Jehovah; she wanted to know how He would know to whom I prayed. My answer: He is the only God, surely he knows who he is. Jehovah is an incorrect translation of God’s name. Jews would not even say the name or write it in Old Testament times because they revered God so much. Of course, they followed pagan gods, too; but, they were legalists like many Christians today so they said one thing and did another. God knows who he is. If I pray through Jesus Christ, God knows my heart. Majoring on minor issues while the world is dying without Christ is just what Satan loves.

Posted on November 19, 2011 at 4:01pmWhile I despair of Muslim’s future – I rejoice when I see proof of the scriptures every day in the world. Jesus said the world hated him and would hate us also. He said if we follow him we will face adversity for our faith. When persecution raises its ugly head, it is more validation that we are Christ’s and He is ours. The same way, when I feel the chastisement of God, I rejoice because it is further proof that I am a daughter. I do not enjoy chastisement; but, I know that it is evidence of God in my life. I pray that God will send a sign to Muslims; after all, if they believed God, they would no longer be enemies. Still, we cannot allow them to kill in the name of their religion just because we feel sorry for them.

But, after 9/11 most Muslims in this country continued to live undisturbed. Not so in Muslim countries can a Christian live, never-mind living undisturbed. It is evident you do not understand Holy Scripture. God’s glory in both Old and New Testaments is on display for anyone to see. The difference between the two testaments is that Christ came to begin the age of Grace where-by all men, Jew and Greek (gentile) can be saved from His wrath. In the Old Testament, men waited on the coming of Christ – though God revealed him in the Nation of Israel, any stranger coming into the congregation of Jews could enjoy forgiveness if he were willing to follow the Jewish law and belief. Once Christ satisfied the requirements of the law, all men can, by grace, come to God. There was no commandment to kill people who did not believe – men made that up. Unfortunately, Mohammed knew just enough Judaism and just enough Christian faith with a dash of pagan gods to make a stew most foul.
