Pakistani Blogger Slams Islamic Feast of Eid: ‘Call Me an Infidel’ But I Can‘t ’Make Merry‘ at ’Mass-Murdering’ Cute Animals

One of the most significant religious holidays celebrated by Muslims across the globe is the Eid Al-Adha, or “Festival of Sacrifice.” The three-day feast commemorates the biblical prophet Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son Ishmael in submission to God. To this end, millions of animals – goats, sheep, cows and camels – are sacrificed for the occasion.
A few days before the holiday began on November 7 a Pakistani blogger, Saad Zuberi, wrote a semi-satirical, semi-serious piece for The Express Tribune newspaper titled, “10 Things I Hate About Bakra Eid.”
Zuberi also noted the hypocrisy in Muslim children being scolded for watching action movies but not for watching the “brutal” slaughter of animals en masse, stating, ”…some parents think that watching Jackie Chan act like a nincompoop in a movie is bad influence for their kids, but that watching four blood-soaked men brutally attack, slaughter, skin and butcher an 800-pound cow – live – is healthy entertainment.”
Below is Zuberi’s laundry list of the many things he hates about Eid:
“10 Things I Hate About Bakra Eid”
1. The smell of goats, blood and freshly slaughtered meat. It’s everywhere!
2. Call me an infidel, but I just can’t bring myself to make merry at the idea of mass-murdering a few hundred thousand cute, furry, unsuspecting farm animals in a span of 72 hours… and that too publicly, in front of a sadistically gleeful audience.
3. All the barbeque talk. Show some sensitivity, people!
4. The questions: Are you slaughtering a goat or a cow? How much will you be spending this year? Only two days left, dude, where’s your animal? Seriously guys, I’ll get whatever I want, whenever I want – the fact that I’ll probably only be able to afford an undernourished midget cow is my business and my business alone!
5. How everyone, including some highly intelligent people, lose their marbles a week before Eid, spending every day just staring at their animals. Poor thing’s bound to get the heebie-jeebies!
6. Eid morning – help me God if I have to leave the house and witness the genocide… which I always do, with unrealistic expectations of remaining all Zen at the sight of blood and gutted animals.
7. Becoming a vegetarian for a couple of weeks after freaking out at the sight of above-mentioned blood. Especially if you’re the kind of person who actually looks forward to his weekly steaks and hamburgers.
8. How the true essence of the tradition is lost on most of us – people would gladly spend bundles of cash on four goats and two cows at Bakra Eid [i.e. Eid-ul-Adha] so they can feed their own greed and gluttony by stuffing their deep-freezers to full capacity, but go berserk if a truly deserving person should ask them for a little meat to feed his/her hungry children some other time during the year.
9. How some parents think that watching Jackie Chan act like a nincompoop in a movie is bad influence for their kids, but that watching four blood-soaked men brutally attack, slaughter, skin and butcher an 800 pound cow – live – is healthy entertainment.
10. Post-Bakra Eid dinner parties with red-meat dishes in great abandon. How very subtle!

Posted on November 10, 2011 at 3:10pmAt least the animals at Eid are killed before cooking- we drop live lobsters and crabs into boiling water!
Please note that this celebration is a commemoration of Abraham’s sacrifice of the ram God provided in place of his son Isaac (but Mohamed changed it to Ishmael in the Koran); it is not a sacrifice in and of itself. I know Christians who live in Muslim countries who have been invited to attend the feastwhich follows this slaughtter. They do so as it provides great opportunities to converse about the whole point of blood atonement and their faith in the fully atoning sacrificial death & subsequent resurrection of Christ.

Posted on November 11, 2011 at 12:44am@sohlzenitsin One little difference: the lobsters and crabs die the second they touch the water. The “screaming” has to do with their shell. Also, we are way more humane to our animals. Want to argue with me on that? Don’t try – my job is taking care of livestock (cows).
On a side note – I find that after taking care of most cows you don’t feel so bad about eating them (the fact that I am virtually the opposite of a vegetarian might help). Most of them even have names and I wouldn’t feel bad about eating them. One or two I wouldn‘t like to eat but I wouldn’t mind the rest.

Posted on November 10, 2011 at 1:33amIn case you missed it-Obama Nov.7 2011 Quote: Michelle and I extend our greetings for a happy Eid al-Adha to Muslims worldwide and congratulate those performing Hajj.
Thousands of Muslim Americans are among those who have joined one of the world’s largest and most diverse gatherings in making the pilgrimage to Mecca and nearby sites.
As Muslims celebrate this Eid, they will also commemorate Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son by distributing food to those less fortunate around the world. They join the United States and the international community in relief efforts to assist those struggling to survive in the Horn of Africa and those recovering from the devastating earthquake in Turkey.
The Eid and Hajj rituals are a reminder of the shared roots of the world’s Abrahamic faiths and the powerful role that faith plays in motivating communities to serve and stand with those in need. On behalf of the American people, we extend our best wishes during this Hajj season.

Posted on November 10, 2011 at 1:32amThis past Eid, I was invited to witness the sacrifice.
As a Christian, I was interested in watching the event.
It was done quickly and cleanly. It was NOT barbaric.
A prayer was said over the goat, and the goat became quiet.
The cutting was done quickly by a professional butcher.
The meat was then later distributed to members of the community.
Nothing was wasted. The clean up was done quickly too.
If you eat any meat, where do you think that meat came from and was prepared?

Report Post »loriann12
Posted on November 10, 2011 at 7:25amActually, the Apostle Paul wrote that you could eat anything. Only someone of weak faith believes that meat sacrificed to idols is bad. The reason you DON’T do it is just for that reason, the weak in faith may stumble.
The original story said the animal was gutted and skinned while still alive. It doesn‘t mention the slit it’s throat first, to kill it and then butchered it. He was thoroughly disgusted in having to watch it. I’m not against slaughtering animals and if they did it quickly and cleanly, more power to them. This is from someone of the faith (Muslim), not an outsider witnessing the event. I’m sure they were more relaxed and true to self with him.

Report Post »Every Religion has a Theology concerning Holy Sacrafice. In the OldTestament, the Meat of the Sacrifice was given to the Tribes of the Clergy. In the NewTestament, Christ as the Sacrifice (to end all other sacrifices) says to take Wine & Bread as if Blood & Meat… as Communion!
These are Religious Values, and matters of Faith… and not alike a virus that you accidently catch; if you take Communion, you profess to be a Christian, where in all are Clergy!
I suggest that you read historical references to theology as related to all Religions.
P.S. Do not just take Paul’s word for everything… but do your own research… as Paul never met Christ… but just happened to attend the same Religious Teaching School, at different times.

Posted on November 10, 2011 at 2:25amIslamic teaching is that it was Ishmael and not Isaac who would have been offered- which doesn’t make sense on many levels. If Abraham was willing to send Ishmael away, certainly, the prospect of offering him up wouldn’t have carried the same weight the request to offer Isaac did. Secondly, it was the idea that Abraham was asked to offer up what God had promised him all those years- the blessing itself returned to God, which made it such a heavy request.
Ishmael, the son born of Abraham’s agreement with Sarah to conceive through Hagar, was akin to the offering of Cain, which came from his own labor. Isaac, the branch and fruit of God’s blessing, resembled more the gift of life itself, as with Abel’s offering- returning God’s gifts back to Him. And Abraham, trusting with all of his heart, was willing.
But God had something else in mind. He knew what had to be done. And because Abraham was willing to offer up his only son- God granted him the blessing. By faith, Abraham was willing to do what only God Himself could do. For it was by the blood of Christ alone that all of mankind would be blessed. Abraham and his descendants carried that promise by inheritance and obedience, which can truly only be received by faith in Jesus Christ- God’s Son, who was sacrificed so that we could be saved.
All offerings till that moment in time pointed to Christ. He is the only fulfillment that is recognized in the heavens. His death ends in victory, so that we may tru

Really it‘s because most people are gutless cowards filled with arrogance and so they don’t want to look at the way the controllers of societies keep them wanting and discontent so they work and work and work towards nothingness, when they could have been content buzzing with their soul-mate and a common people. I call it, them plowing my fields, or them bringing a flood. And while people could have married their soul-mate who was also born in or near the same community, instead the floods carried them away to another region far far away. How do they do this sinister deed? Closing factories, opening factories, people moving away to find a job, large large companies bringing workers in from out of town, moving the family far away to a better school system, and a hundred other ways to get people to move to other regions. I just thought I would tell them, God knows.
