Pakistani Family Resists Pressure to Honor Kill Raped Daughter

One shudders to think what would happen if his or her daughter suffered the unspeakable crime of rape. For most parents, thoughts of bringing the perpetrator to justice, combined with determining how best to care for their wounded daughter and nurse her back to mental and physical health would top priorities. For rape victims in many Islamic countries, however, it is quite the opposite, with the female victim often becoming the pariah, and later, a potential target for an honor killing.

For 17-year-old Pakistani girl Kainat Soomro, who was allegedly gang raped four years ago, that fortunately was not the case. Her family resisted widespread pressure to kill their daughter for supposedly disgracing them by falling victim to the heinous crime.

Soomro has become a kind of local celebrity in her struggle for justice in the Pakistani courts while she and the entire family is allegedly under a near constant threat of death.

Her father sat next to her as she recounted the 2007 incident. Atlantic Wire reports:

“I was walking home from my school and I went to the store to buy a toy for my niece,” she said, staring at the floor of the office. “While I was looking at things a guy pressed a handkerchief on my nose. I fainted and was kidnapped. Then four men gang raped me.”

As she shared details of her days in captivity and multiple rapes, she kept repeating, “I want justice, I will not stop until I get justice.” After three days, she was finally able to escape she said. As she spoke, her father gently tapped her head. He said he tried to get Kainat’s alleged rapists arrested, but instead he was rebuffed by the police.

According to the Kainat family’s account, the tribal elders declared her kari, (which literally means black female), for losing her virginity outside marriage.

In Pakistan, as is the case in most Islamic countries, women who lose their virginity before marriage, or even those who are raped, are “shamed” and therefore run the risk of falling victim to an honor killing — often at the hands of their own family members.

“These are matters of honor and the leaders call a jirga and they declare that the woman or the couple should be killed,” said Abdul Hai, a veteran field officer for the Human Rights Commission in Pakistan. These acts of violence are most commonly labeled as “honor killings.”

According to AW, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan released a 2009 report revealing that roughly 46 percent of all female murders in Pakistan were committed in the name of “honor.“ The actual incidences of ”honor killings” in Pakistan are likely much higher, however, as many cases go unreported.

Fortunately, Kainat said that despite the pressures, her family refused to murder her:

“It is the tradition, but if the family doesn’t permit it, then it won’t happen. My father, my brother, my mom didn’t allow it,” she said.

And that defiance has left the family fearing for their lives. The family’s new home in Karachi has been attacked a number of times.

But, according to Abdul Hai, Kainat is lucky: “The woman or the girl usually gets killed and the man gets away,” he said. “Over 70 percent of the murdered victims are women and only 30 percent of victims of honor killings are male.”

Meanwhile, Kainat and her family now share one room in a dilapidated apartment building in Karachi, relying on charity for basic sustenance.

“We go hungry many nights,” Kainat’s older sister said.

According to AW the family’s fight may never yield fruit as a local judge has already ruled against Kainat.

“There is no corroborative evidence available on record. The sole testimony of the alleged rape survivor is not sufficient,” the judge said in a written document.

AW adds:

Without medical tests to corroborate her story, it remains Kainat’s word against the alleged rapists. But even having lost her case at the local court, Kainat insists, “I am not giving up, I will take this all the way to the Supreme Court of Pakistan.”

Sadly, while the struggle continues, perhaps there is some solace in the fact that they do so together, as a family — and are united in a common goal. Such is oftentimes, not the case in lands where “honor” reigns supreme.

      The mindset among Muslims is the result of constant brainwashing and propaganda pressed upon them throughout their lives, beginning at birth. With the right input a person can be made to believe whatever mind control masters want him to believe.

      The process is very similar to the process used in this country to glorify diversity and to condemn anyone or anything not in agreement with it as racists and haters. Slogans are used to inculcate a diversity mindset like, “Diversity is our strength,” so that people will eventually accept it as part of their belief system, even though they see much evidence to the contrary, because the inhabitants of diverse socities are always fighting with one another.

      Too, note that most white people, before citing an unjust , immoral or criminal incident by a non-white, usually a black, preface their remarks with the words, “I’m not prejudiced, but….” They‘re intimidated to the point that they’re terrified of complaining against obvious black on white criminal injustices for fear of being labelled a racist or hater or being thought of as such, even when the action they complain about is an obvious act of racism and hate against them.

      So, I might suggest that people who condemn the mind-control used in Muslim societies, would do well to examine themselves to see if they might be affected similarly for different reasons….but for the same purposes, which is to control their thinking…and speech.

      I am so sick and tired of people who claim I just don’t understand Islam.
      This horrific honor killing practice is coming from the same people that proclaim infidels must either convert or be put to death.
      A couple years ago, two miles from me, a Muslim teenager was hung by her father and brother because she wanted to be like the rest of the kids at school and not have to wear the sheet or whatever its called. After the police got involved, one Imam said it was wrong but the more prominent Imam told the press we had to consider the girl was dishonoring her family.
      How Obama can possibly think dealing with these people will change their behaviors is beyond me.

You see… THe muslims have never attacked papal Rome. Something about “Our Lady of Fatima” appearance changed the world”s 350 million muslims. When Mahamad’s daughter died, she was considered to be right up next to Mary, the muslims thought that they were visited by a muslim image. but Mahaamad was coviinced that someday..because of the virgin Mary and her birth to Jesus. that the musliims would come to realize the divinity of the Christ.

I would say though that a Christian religion and even the Judaism from whence it originated.. are of the true God/YWVH/Yashuah as evidenced by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Isam is a contrived religion which has been nothing but murder and hate..even of its own people. There is another religion that I can think of that did that during the Crusades in which millions of protestant Christians were murdered and millions of Bibles were destroyed…so I have to ask..who wants to control? I will pick the God who created the world over any man…which that is what these other religions coming of Bablylon have been. The story is right there in that Bible and it is all coming down just as written.

    Praise God for their strength and the love that leads them to defend their helpless daughter instead of condemn her. May God watch over them and keep them as they struggle to gain justice for this cowardly act. I find it sickly ironic that rape victims and women who are often accused of stupid crimes just to justify their MURDER are killed in the name of HONOR. Honor has NOTHING to do with it. The people that subscribe to this kind of archaic and barbaric behavior are the farthest thing from HONORABLE. They are COWARDS!!!! May God bring HIS vengence for this girl and her family and may He put the love of Jesus further into their hearts so that they come to a saving grace with HIM. They are in my prayers.

    I pray for both of these women. Our house in not large, but it is full of love. I would invite both of these women into my home in a second, and offer them safety, food, warmth and understanding. All members of my family and the community agree.

I believe that they should arrest these guys and make eunichs out of them, and then let them be ostracized by the rest of the nation as they live out their lives in prison. Let them find out how it feels when they are used by the other prisoners.     Honor killing, ya i’d do an honor killing, it would be me killing all the men who had laid a hand on my daughter, and i’d tell you this too, it wouldn’t be a fast death for the men, it would be VERY SLOW and as PAINFUL as i could make it for them! Muslin fathers not to protect your daughters after something like this had happened what a backwards people.

    God bless this beautiful young woman who is so strong and brave–and her courageous family who is standing by her side. May they find peace and love at the end of their fight. I pray that Christ will honor THEM for their courage in the face of evil within their own community (and rain down HELL on these horrible judges and clerics and those who so viciously attacked her…). I hope other families have the courage and heart to follow this example.

    In my opinion–rape is worse than murder and should be prosecuted the same. Those who are victims of this horrible crime must live with the memories for the rest of their lives. The impact cannot be minimized. Unfortunately, rape is on the rise here in the US. 1 in 4–it may be 1 in 3 young women now, and I believe 1 in 7 young men suffer molestation and/or rape before the age of 18. Think about that next time you walk down the street. Every 3rd or 4th girl could have already been, or will become, a victim. We cannot stand by idle here at home with such unacceptable statistics. We must stop this abomination. Human trafficking is also on the rise here…

    It is NOT racist to be against Islam. Why? Well, because being a Muslim means being a follower of Muhammad. If you are a follower of Jesus Christ, then you are a Christian. One can be of Arabic decent, and believe in Jesus Christ. That person would be a Christian. One can also be of Caucasian decent and believe in Muhammad. As you can see, “race” doesn’t play a part in religious beliefs.

    Anyway, I really don‘t care what one’s religious beliefs are unless they are threat to the lives and safety of others and myself. Think of the Mayans. Their religion required them to tear the hearts out of those they conquered to gain favor with their god. We had the Christian Crusades where people were killed for not converting to Christianity. We had the Salem witch trials in colonial times.

    A good rule for me is that if a religion involves killing or maiming someone for breaking it’s “rules”, then it‘s not a religion that I’d want to have anything to do with.

    Angel Gabriel, God’s messenger who appeared to the Virgin Mary, is revered in Islam for imparting the Koran to Muhammad in 610 AD. Islam however, has yet to undergo a modern reformation.

    Given it’s common origin, just as the Old Testament was adjoined with the Christian New Testament, the Koran must be similarly revised to substitute religious tenets of peace, tolerance and forgiveness as taught by Christ, for outdated dictates. Retaining obsolete teachings, whether metaphoric or not, can only misguide modern Muslims into misery, conflict and death. Devoutness must no longer be misconstrued to sanction Islamic intolerance, oppression and violence, be it directed at one person, one group or an entire populace.

    Muslims might then live a peaceful life of enlightened reverence and service, not servitude. A revised Koran would encourage embracing a peaceful life resplendent with spiritual prosperous purpose, as opposed to perpetuating primitive predilections for fearful savagery.

    Tyrannical insularity must be replaced by respect for humanity “endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” as justly deserved and equally desired by all humanity.

    The religion of peace. How they can find the religion of Mohammad the child molester superior to the sacrifice and grace of Christ, Jesus is beyond comprehension.

      Think about the story you just read. Islam involves the subjugation of the weak by the strong. The option to choose to leave Islam is essentially non- existent. It is not that they find Islam to be morally superior to Christianity — if they were free to choose, the Islamic land would become Christian very quickly.

      Chuck. I think the point should be let each person choose. After they choose don’t kill them for their choice. Only one cult that I can think of who actually kills people for being different than them. Care to name the cult?

      Most are brain washed, or live in fear of death to speak against out against the religion controlled by evil. I don’t think they would be silent if they really knew of Jesus, and did they not live in fear of death to speak out and resist this evil that surrounds them. That is what makes this story so amazing, this family has serious courage and is doing the right thing despite all the evil surrounding them.

      Example to make my case is the Pastor in Iran threatened with death if he does not recant his faith in Christ, but he knows and he won’t recant his faith in Christ, no matter the threats.

      People are people, if they knew, many more would leave this religion of evil, but they either don’t know, or don’t have the courage to face near certain death to leave it.

      Ironically this is known by the leaders of this hateful religion, which is why they are so militant and violent in spreading their “faith”.

      How can it be faith, if only believed by the masses under fear of death? – Answer it is not, it is fear that keeps many in the “faith” and most are just ignorant or so isolated, they don’t know of anything else.
