Pakistan‘s President Plays the ’Victim Card’

This morning’s Op-Ed in the Washington Post from Pakistan’s President Zardari (Pakistan Did Its Part) seems to be a curious one.
Before we delve into the details, let us be reminded of a few facts:
Since 2011, the US has sent $20 billion in ‘direct aid’ (cash payments) to Pakistan.
Bin Laden was discovered to be living in a compound less than a mile from Pakistan’s equivalent of West Point.
The first comments from Pakistan came from the Foreign Office and stated; “This operation was conducted by the US Forces in accordance with declared US policy that Osama bin Laden will be eliminated in a direct action by the US forces, wherever found in the world.”
Reports from Pakistan say Zardari has still not addressed his own people on this topic, but he has written an Op-Ed for an American paper.
In the Wa-Po piece, the Pakistani President seems to be trying to position his country as the biggest victim of bin Laden. In fact, he leads with that theory;
Pakistan, perhaps the world’s greatest victim of terrorism, joins the other targets of al-Qaeda — the people of the United States, Britain, Spain, Indonesia, Afghanistan, Turkey, Yemen, Kenya, Tanzania, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Algeria — in our satisfaction that the source of the greatest evil of the new millennium has been silenced, and his victims given justice.
In the very next paragraph, President Zardari also seems to be making an effort to both attach and distance his country from the killing of OBL;
Although the events of Sunday were not a joint operation, a decade of cooperation and partnership between the United States and Pakistan led up to the elimination of Osama bin Laden as a continuing threat to the civilized world. And we in Pakistan take some satisfaction that our early assistance in identifying an al-Qaeda courier ultimately led to this day.
He seems to be saying that Pakistan did not help the U.S., well not this time anyway, but Pakistan did something, one time, a long time ago. Doesn’t that count for anything? Maybe the Pakistani President wants to stay friends with us. He must know that the American people will not be happy learning that bin Laden may have lived in the luxurious compound for the past six years.
And then there is the possibility that Zardari is worried about retaliation from the remaining Al Qaeda members. His Op-Ed also stated;
Only hours after bin Laden’s death, the Taliban reacted by blaming the government of Pakistan and calling for retribution against its leaders, and specifically against me as the nation’s president. We will not be intimidated. Pakistan has never been and never will be the hotbed of fanaticism that is often described by the media.
Hmm, not a ‘hotbed of fanaticism?’ Here is a Reuters report of Pakistani protests AGAINST the killing of OBL;
And then there is the statement from former President Musharraf, claiming that the US mission was a violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty.
President Zardari is in a very difficult place. He runs a nation with a substantial nuclear arsenal. His late wife, President Benazir Bhutto, was killed during an Al Qaeda attack in December of 2007. And when Pakistan was found to be hosting the world’s most wanted man, America swooped in with a unilateral military action, killing this criminal without working alongside Pakistan, or even telling the country the operation was happening. Reuters has even referred to Pakistan as “embarrassed” by this.
Perhaps playing the ‘victim card’ is the only way for Zardari to save face and keep his approval rating high.
You can read the entire Op-Ed from President Zardari, ‘Pakistan Did Its Part.’

Posted on May 3, 2011 at 10:14amOur raid totally humiliated the Pakis on every meaningful level. First and worst, people in high places over there were covering bin Laden for six years. If the Paki president didn’t know about it, he looks inept and impotent as a head of state. If he did know, he’s complicit.
Second, our strike team went in undetected or at least so well disguised they slipped right past the entire Paki military. Abbottobad isn’t on the border so the flight in took time, as did the escape unscathed. I heard the Pakis scrambled fighters, but they didn’t get near our helicopters.
With a military compound a mile away, filled with men training to be soldiers, our team could have quickly been surrounded and cut off from rescue. That alone says one word our enemies need to never forget: GUTS. Had things gone terribly wrong, which I bet our men knew, the mission would have been one-way. We also didn’t know for certain if bin Laden was truly there.
The Pakis need to save face here, but I see no way out for them. Good–let them squirm, because the rumors of American decline are premature and grossly exaggerated.

Posted on May 3, 2011 at 9:57amIt was said in an interview earlier this morning on a radio talk show that Pakistan is in a very precarious position. With many Islamic fanatics living in the country, civil war is always a threat. Perhaps the government wants to do more to help us but cannot chance stirring up a “hornet’s nest.” If that be the case, Pakistan would be wise to turn its head the other way and allow US to do our thing whether informed before hand or not.

Posted on May 3, 2011 at 11:05amPaki was preparing their airforce to chase/ retaliate against our blakhawks after the raid/ assasination. that is hardly standing out of the way and letting us do what we need to. They are, and have been for years, subjucating and actively thwarting our efforts to get to the bottom of anything. They are not our allies, except by convenience because they have a nuke arsenal. As others have already posted, they are corrupt to the core. They are doing what they do (subversion) because they are in a tenious position. They are corrupt.

Posted on May 3, 2011 at 9:53amDoes anyone else think that we might be missing something BIG here? Remember how news that we lost ~ 3 trillion dollars just blew over because of the attacks on 9-11? This combined with the president’s releasing of a birth cert. has dominated the media coverage for about a week now. Just imagine what you could get away with in that time with all the news agencies paying attention to other things. I don’t mean to downplay the importance of killing Osama, but it shouldn’t be as big of a deal as it is. Most of the terrorists don’t take orders from him, and we for sure should not be celebrating the death of anyone like we are. I understand he was a horrible person but doesn’t it seem odd to celebrate a death so openly? I didn’t think we were like that as a nation. If it was a celebration to commemorate the ending of the war on terrorism that would be one thing, but it isn’t. Osama was old, and in the last ten years he could have trained a thousand replacements for himself. My point is that maybe this news is being used to block other things from reaching the public.

Posted on May 3, 2011 at 12:27pmI’m sure you are right on that one, SGTB. This is a very common ploy of politicians, to distract the people with the right hand so they don’t see what the left hand is doing. The elimination of OBL a few years ago, like closer to 9/11 would have been much more healing for our nation. Now it’s just what it looks like- another attempt to boost Barry’s poles. OBL had out lived his usefulness and was of little significance in the war on terror at this point. Don’t be distracted or deceived by this. Keep your eye on what is important. Give credit where credit is due – our men and women in uniform.

But regardless,Phokistan have been playing US for fools for quite some time. Under many presidents.
US should have no concern about Phokistan playing the victim card.
I mean, many here in the US have been playing the victim card, the race card and all kinds of cards.
I think we should try to get our “munny’ back.. w/ interest.
US borrows billions from the Communist Chinese to give to Phokistan.
Now it‘s Phokistan’s turn to borrow 20 bil from the Chinese to pay US back.
It was a Brit trained Phokistani “nukuler” scientist who got N. Korea’s nuke program cranked up.
Cut off all aid immediately. We have become the World’s biggest “suka”
Borrowing Communist “munny” to give to countries who hates US.
