Palestinian Hip-Hop Group Comparing Israelis to Nazis Performs for Oregon Public High School Students

Palestinian Hip Hop Group Dam Performs at Portland Public High School

An online petition has been landing in the inboxes of pro-Israel Americans this month, many of whom are expressing shock at the Portland public school system for allowing a Palestinian hip-hop group with offensive lyrics justifying terrorism and comparing Israelis to Nazis to perform at a city high school.

The group, named DAM, was invited to perform at Lincoln High School last month. Simply knowing the band’s name, DAM – blood in Arabic and Hebrew – raises serious questions why school officials would position this group in front of impressionable students. Their lyrics raise even more questions about the judgment of these school officials.

Sponsored by Portland State University Christians United for Israel, the petition states:

The lyrics demonize Israeli Jews, calling them rapists and Nazis, justifying terrorism against them.. (”You’re a Democracy? It’s more like the Nazis…Your raping of the Arab soul gave birth to your child: The suicide bomber.”) These lyrics are threatening to Jewish students at Lincoln, and do not represent the mainstream opinions of Palestinians and Arab Israelis.

A sample of the group’s work: one DAM song called “Min Irhabi” or “Who’s a Terrorist?” is filled with anti-Israel propaganda and in-your-face lyrics, that many parents – regardless of their political stripe – would just as soon not have their children get a free helping of at school. With these few lines, one gets the picture:

Chorus:
Who’s a terrorist? I’m a terrorist?
How am I a terrorist while I live in my country
Who’s a terrorist? You’re a terrorist!
You’re swallowing me while I live in my country
Killing me like you killed my ancestors […]

Democracy? I swear you’re Nazis
With all the times you raped the Arab spirit
It got pregnant and birthed a boy called the suicide bomber
And here you are calling us terrorists

The petitioners say even though students and parents voiced their concerns about the band’s content to the school board, the board went ahead with the performance, “despite the physical and emotional fears of the students.” The petition is asking the school board to apologize and assure students that “events with hate speech will not be tolerated again. Presently, the school board has found no breach in Lincoln High School’s policies on hate speech.”

The Jewish Review reported on the November 4th concert at a Lincoln High School student assembly. Teachers tried to prepare classes before attending the assembly. One teacher didn’t bring his class, because he felt he didn’t have enough time to prepare them. Students reported the event lasted an hour with band members speaking English, but some of the lyrics were not translated. The report did not say if the song “Who’s a Terrorist” was performed. One attendee said many “asked the trio what they thought could be done to solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict:”

“One of their answers that really bothered me was that they said the land of Israel should not be controlled by a Jewish government. It seems innocuous on the surface, because it looks like they are advocating for fairness and equality.” But what “went over a lot of heads at the assembly,” she explained, was that if there is no Jewish state, then eventually there will be no Jews in the Middle East. There is currently “only one Jewish country” among all the Muslim/Arab ones, she said, and “they are saying that the Jewish state doesn’t have the right to exist.”

[A Wilson high school student who also attended, Jewish Student Union President Becky] Davidson said that a lot of kids in the audience “just didn’t know. They were like, ‘Yeah, we want equality, too.’ It’s really idealistic, but it’s not the reality.”

After the rappers’ comments, Davidson said that [student Shoshi] Singer heard a girl in the audience say, “Oh, my God, I hate Israel! It so sucks.”

According to Davidson, when DAM members said, “We need to have equality for all people in Israel” they suggested that this would be accomplished when Israel was no longer a Jewish state.

The Jewish Review also reports the school allowed a panel discussion on November 1st to address concerns over the hip hop group’s invitation. The assembly three days later was called “optional,” meaning teachers could decide if to bring their students.

It reports the public school’s Arab Studies Program is funded by Qatar Foundation International, which also sponsored the hip hop group’s visit to the high school. Last year, Israeli, Spanish and British newspapers reported that the Qatar Foundation had given money to extremist Muslim cleric Yusuf al Qaradawi who advocates “terrorism, wife beating and anti-Semitism” and that the foundation gives money to the terrorist group Hamas:

Michael Cahana, senior rabbi for Congregation Beth Israel, attended the panel discussion as the rabbi of many families whose children attend Lincoln. He said, “This is not a free speech issue; it is an educational issue. Certainly from a Jewish perspective the lyrics of DAM’s songs promote terrorism, which strikes me as really inappropriate to bring them to a high school. To have a vibrant discussion [outside of a school] makes sense. But when you bring a group into a classroom” or, in this case an assembly, “it carries a certain responsibility. And I don’t see that responsibility being met.” […]

From the sidelines Peyton Chapman, Lincoln High School principal, jumped in with, “If the word ‘Nazi’ comes up at the assembly, we’re going to discuss it.” The Holocaust “was an incredible horror. We don’t want to have it repeated.”

If the concert during school hours wasn’t offensive enough, the school’s Arabic teacher, Sarah Standish, posted a notice on her blog to which the school’s website links offering students extra credit if they attended an off-campus screening of a documentary about the group and submitted a 300-word essay about the experience. In the same post she included a letter trying to assure parents that “DAM does not advocate violence of any kind.”

Perhaps a Lincoln senior Emilie Cohen summarized the issue most eloquently:

“My biggest concern is that our principal is supposed to keep us physically and emotionally safe. And with this group and their published videos it makes me feel like they hate Jews; they hate Israelis. I personally don’t feel emotionally safe knowing that these people – who hate me without even knowing me – come into my public school, spreading their message. …why would our principal allow this group to come in?”

The anti-Israeli curricula and atmosphere on American college campuses has faced scrutiny in recent years; this Portland case suggests there may also be a growing problem in K-12 schools.

It should be noted the members of DAM are Arab citizens of Israel who identify themselves as Palestinian. Their opinion of the city where they were raised – Lod, next to Ben-Gurion International Airport – is that it’s occupied Palestinian territory, not Israel. Or, in other words: there is no place in their world view for Jews to have their national homeland.

The Blaze reached out to the principal of the high school for comment, but did not hear back in time for publication.

    At this point, I am so ready for the second coming of Christ. The lies, deceit, and corruption has destroyed this once great country. We are kidding ourselves that winning the next election will solve the problem. Every facet of our republic has been inflicted with terminal cancer and the only hope of it being healed is through Christ himself. A Cival War would not even fix the problems, it would just create the same nightmare of the Israel/Palestinian War here in our own country. Generation after Generation of fighting.       If I may elaborate, What you said is the way I see it also, for the most part the country is over and done with. IF it can be fixed, it certainly will not happen in my life time. People think this election will be the BE ALL END ALL, but it won’t. the reality of our political parties are they are working together, maybe not on the surface but one must look into the Bilderbergers, Trilateral Commision, The council on foreign affairs, and there are more. common sense says these organizations in cooperation with and within the U.N.       I agree with both of you and I believe that we are living in the End Times. I really don‘t care who wins the GOP nomination Obama won’t let go of the office. Even if a Republican won the Oval Office the power that has been running this country will not let go of their aims.

      Things have gone too far. We are in for some really hard times ahead. I can’t wait for Jesus to take over.

    Now its true that Lincoln is one of the top performing High schools in the district,it is also in one of the highest income areas as well.
    Peyton Chapman is nothing more than an “Activist Principle” she seems to enjoy pushing the envelope with the students and especially with the parents.And she fits right in with the “Keep Portland Weird” crowd.
    I grew up in Portland, soo glad I dont live there anymore.No way I would send my kids to that craptastic school district.

      I dont understand what is going on here. Hip Hop music is not allowed in all Islamic countries. All music that does not lift up Allah is banned. If you perform or listen to Devil Music, the result is jail or death. How are they getting away with this?

      Please state your dates. From what I understand, the Palestinians relocated THEMSELVES to camps when the Arab countries surrounding Palestine threatened to attack. Now, those same arab nations are not taking those refugees in.

      Israel cannot take “Palestinian Land” any more than the US can take Californian land. Palestine doesn’t exist except in the minds of dissident Muslims.

      Everyone has to carry ID.

      Israel Cannot Occupy Palestine any more than the US can Occupy California.

      The majority of Palestinian/Israeli conflict has been Israel defending herself. The taking land has been the result of FAILED attacks in the which Israel pushed them back. By all rights, Israel should have kept ALL the land taken in those conflicts, as they were NOT the aggressors.

      You forgot a few things…like…GAS CHAMBERS and mass murder, mass graves, etc. Any comparison to the Jews of Israel BEING like Nazis falls flat on its face. ALso, you forget that there ARE Muslims (What is a Palestinian anyway?) living in Isreal, living peacefully and conducting business there. So why are Palestinians different than those Muslims? Because they REFUSE to live in peace.

      We have a very recent example of which side behaves like the Nazis. One Israeli was set free for 1027 Palestinians. The Palestinians were well treated. Otherwise, the PA would have publicly denounced Israel’s violation of Geneva Conventions as pertains to the treatment of detainees or POWs. Also, we got to see a sample of the Palestinian terrorists enjoying life at Club Med the day after their release. In stark contrast to that picture of good health, Shalit, the one Jew, was emaciated to the point that his breathing was labored and he could hardly walk. There was no difference between him and the Jews who survived the Nazi concentration camps. None.

      Nevertheless, I am not surprised at this distortion of the truth. The Muslim world worships Satan thinking he is the only true god. When people live in such depth of spiritual darkness — or embrace it from afar like you have — it follows that you will call evil good and good evil.

    The Semitic peoples are thus classed: Jews and Arabs. These two strains of humanity are by Nature violent and have been at each other’s throats since Mohammed killed a bunch of Jews at Medina and then raped the widows. The Blaze cheapens itself by retaining Jewish writers that give biased perspective on the ancient Arab-Jew conflict, and advocate for Americans to fight Israel’s battles.

    The intra-Semitic fight is none of our business. If these groups want to fight, send them home and let them go at it. As an incentive for both groups to self-deport and finally straighten their differences out, the winner gets Jerusalem, a whole bunch of oil reserves, and the potential for a lasting peace.

Funny, the First Amendment says that the Government WILL NOT establish a religion in this country, and Article Six says there WILL NEVER be a religious test in this country to hold offices or public trusts. I guess the Constitution isn’t important to you. You may not like was this group has to say, but it won’t hurt you to hear it. The group that filed suit is a Christian Zionist group, they want Israel to exist so the Apocalypse can take place and the Messiah will return. They do not represent most American Christian or Jews and probably very few Israelis. Israel can not continue as a single state, Palestinians are having more children than Israelis, if they remain as Israelis, they will outnumber Jews and vote to change the country. A two state solution, with Israel giving up some territory, that is contiguous and governable to form a Palestinian state is the only way for both peoples to survive.

      These lyrics are threatening to us all. They are manipulative, hateful, and not grounded in reality. When someone says Jews are “nazis” they are really saying that they are doing to others terrible things that were actually done to them not very long ago. What is happening in the Middle East now is not comparable to the Holocaust. Arabs rape the Arab soul with their quest for destroying the Jewish people and taking away their homeland. They are violent terrorists who play on the ignorance of people who just want to “help the poor Palestinians”. There would be peace in the Middle East if the Palestinians would resolve to live in peace with the Jewish people. They won’t even acknowledge that Jews have a right to exist!

      This performance at a public school is appalling. I see it as an attempt to brainwash young people. All anyone has to do to find factual information to disprove every ignorant remark made during this rap is a little research. This isn’t acceptable public education.

      I lived in Portland & Ashland, Oregon for 33 years total, what a mess, Portland is the worst,I woke up about 5 years ago and started doing my own homework and thinking for myself, friends who I thought were friends turned on me, even family to a point. Now God and his word is my guide. Make your stand, know what YOU believe. America is in big trouble for sure, both sides..Dems & Reps are the problem. We/man can not fix this now, only divine intervention. Prepare………..

    That’s nice, it appears that Portland public school system is an equal opportunity employer and have appointed people who are intellectually disabled to sit on the school board. I suspect that board members are actually elected so it would seem that the community voting these morons (who also appear to be haters) in must not be very bright either. JUST an observation
