Palestinian Leader Announces Bid for Full U.N. Membership

RAMALLAH, West Bank (The Blaze/AP) — The Palestinian president said Friday that he will ask the U.N. Security Council next week to endorse his statehood bid, a step that would risk a threatened U.S. veto in the council.

But in a speech to the Palestinian people before departing for New York, President Mahmoud Abbas appeared to leave himself some wiggle room, saying he did not rule out other, unspecified options. He also acknowledged that his U.N. move would not end the Israeli occupation and cautioned against outsized hopes. The New York Times has more:

The announcement by the president, Mahmoud Abbas, in a televised speech delivered at his headquarters in Ramallah in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, was the first time he has formally committed to such a strategy, which Palestinian officials have been moving toward for months as their frustration over stalled peace talks with Israel has intensified.

“We don’t want to raise expectations by saying we are going to come back with full independence,” Abbas said in an address to Palestinian leaders. He said he was going to the United Nations to “ask the world to shoulder its responsibilities” by backing the establishment of a Palestinian state in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem.

He urged the Palestinian people to refrain from violence, saying “anything other than peaceful moves will harm us and sabotage our endeavors.”

Israel – and Washington – oppose the Palestinians’ quest for a U.N. nod, saying the only way to deliver a Palestinian state is through negotiations, the cornerstone of Mideast peace efforts for the past two decades.

Palestinian Foreign Minister Riad Malki said Thursday that Abbas would submit his statehood bid to U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon after addressing the U.N. General Assembly on Sept. 23.

Although things will not change on the ground, the Palestinians hope the U.N. move will give them greater leverage in future negotiations with Israel by elevating their international profile and giving them access to world bodies like the International Criminal Court.

    Mr Williams

I want to thank you for your comments.

The school system is required by federal not to ask if a student is legal or illegal. The school is required by law to educate all regardless if the are illegal citizen of the US.

It is the school system’s job to provide the best education to all the students that attend and to do in a safe and clean environment.

    Thanks again,

Why do you waste our tax dollars educating the children of illegal’s. The next time our property taxes are increased, we will file a law suit and protest. It is time to take a stand. Government takes more and more and can never get enough of the peoples wealth.

He urged the Palestinian people to refrain from violence, saying “anything other than peaceful moves will harm us and sabotage our endeavors.” WHAT A LIE!! Hamas and Hezbollah run Palestine. Both are internationally recongnized terrorist organizations. There is NOTHING PEACEFUL regarding Palestine.

If Palestine is given statehood by the UN then it is time for Israel to remove herself from the UN and protect the city of Jerusalem from being carved in half. Believe me there are plenty of nations betrayed by the left leaning pitiful UN waiting to break off. If Israel takes that step, many other nations may just follow thereby making the UN like her predecessor the League of Nations.

When Jordan gives up Judea and Samaria, then we can talk. Until then, I don’t know why anyone in their right mind would consider granting statehood to squatters.

Fact is, Jordan hasn’t had any presence in Judaea and Samaria since 1967. It renounced all claims to the area in favor of the Palestinians as far back as 1988.

This chap has litterally been following the UN Secretary General around the world lobbying for a place in the UN. He or one of his representatives was here in New Zealand last week for the Pacific Island Forum, and he wasn’t here to watch the Rugby World Cup.

Obama is secretly pushing this agenda. He will vote for a palestinian state and statehood . Then he will brag that he brought peace…yet….the war has just begun. Obama is a secret muslim, socialist and he is an enemy to the US, the west, and Israel. Impeach him now.

Those muslim-Israelis need to move back to their original country… wherever that may be. Most are from Jordan. I think the Israelis should tear down that satanic temple that rests on the site of Soloman’s Temple and rebuild their temple to the one true God.
On the last day, even Mohammed will bow before the one true God before he is cast into the lake of fire unless he repented before his death and descension into hell.

So now the lines are being finalized for the showdown; soon enough we will see war break out between Israel and her neighbours. I do see the fact of shortly after a new state is established, which is almost a given at this stage of the game; there will occur a incident, or series of them for which Israel will be accused and the other states invade for the sake of “Protecting the new allied state of the Palestinians.”

The only question will be when it comes, and will it go nuclear.

Let ‘em do whatever they want. The Palestinians belong in The U.N. – we don’t. I believe that there have been around 350 conflicts all over the world, since the U.N was formed. They have resolved …two of them.

Let somebody else foot the bill for doing nothing.

Rewarding the Palestinian terrorist authority with statehood would be something that one would expect this corrupt organization to do. The U.N. has already been taken over by the OIC and they’re directing their every move.

It’s time to shut the disgusting U.N. down and kick them out of America. Why are we financing these supporters of terror?

Another excuse for an all out war against Israel – they will work up sympathy for “liberating” their “occupied” homeland. Bunch of lying creeps these Palestinian leaders. If they want peace it’s theirs to have if they put down their weapons; but that’s not what they want.
