Palestinians Set Date for UN Statehood Bid

RAMALLAH, West Bank (The Blaze/AP) — Palestinians will present their bid for United Nations membership on Sept. 20, the Palestinian foreign minister told French news service AFP Saturday.

Though a statehood bid has been widely expected, Riyad al-Maliki’s announcement is the first confirmation of a precise date.

According to the report, P.A. President Mahmoud Abbas will personally present the request to become a full-fledged state to U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon on the first day of the body’s new session.

Maliki said the P.A. chose September because Lebanon will hold the rotating Security Council presidency and be in a strong position to push the bid forward.

“Lebanon will hold the presidency of the Security Council in September and this will help us because the president of the council has special prerogatives, which is crucial,” Maliki told AFP.

The move will likely set the stage for a showdown with the U.S., which is expected to veto the bid — even at a time when Arab countries are rising up against authoritarian rulers.

Palestinian legislator Hanan Ashrawi said the P.A. is “going to the U.N. with all options open….We are going to the Security Council, we are going to the General Assembly. We are not limiting ourselves to one thing.”

She urged the U.S. to abstain if it would not support the Palestinian bid outright.

(Related: Palestinian Authority Threatens to Disband if U.S. Thwarts Palestinian Statehood Efforts in September)

But the U.S., Israel’s closest ally, has much invested in a peace process it has sponsored for decades, and wants the Palestinian state to emerge from negotiations, not unilateral action.

The Palestinians, however, seem to have given up on negotiations with the current hardline Israeli government. Talks have stalled for the past few years, and Palestinians instead want the U.N. to recognize their future state in the Gaza Strip, West Bank and east Jerusalem – territories Israel captured in the 1967 Mideast war.

Israel withdrew settlers and soldiers from Gaza in 2005 but still occupies the West Bank and east Jerusalem.

Ordinarily, the Security Council recommends membership and then refers the request to the General Assembly. If the council vetoes membership or delays deliberation, the Palestinians could appeal directly to the General Assembly, where they are assured the simple majority they need. They could also skip the Security Council altogether and go straight to the Assembly.

But an Assembly resolution would likely yield “nonmember state” status – at best a symbolic victory because it doesn’t empower them to challenge the occupation.

Ashrawi said the Palestinians were still drafting the text of the statehood bid and had not decided whether it would mention details such as borders or Jerusalem, whose eastern sector they claim for a future capital.

The current Israeli government, unlike earlier coalitions, insists on retaining sovereignty over all of the holy city, rejecting Palestinian claims to the traditionally Arab eastern sector for a capital.

so if you don’t like the country you live in you just goto the UN and tell them were making a new one in that country. is this really how it works? Cause if this is so i think we should have new states in our union the state of Iraq, Afgan, and a few other places come to mind as well.

Why is it that “palestine” must be created from Israeli territory? Fact is the palestinian mandate included Jordan and Iraq. Why don’t they give them some land? Answer: because its not about land; its about destroying a great example of democracy in the middle east.

It will be the undoing of things as we know them now, apparently:

Isaiah 24:1 ¶ Behold, the LORD maketh the earth empty, and maketh it waste, and turneth it upside down, and scattereth abroad the inhabitants thereof. Isa 24:2 And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the servant, so with his master; as with the maid, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the lender, so with the borrower; as with the taker of usury, so with the giver of usury to him. Isaiah 24:3 The land shall be utterly emptied, and utterly spoiled: for the LORD hath spoken this word. Isaiah 24:4 The earth mourneth and fadeth away, the world languisheth and fadeth away, the haughty people of the earth do languish. Isaiah 24:5 The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws (torah), changed the ordinance (set times-Sabbaths, etc), broken the everlasting covenant (with Abraham over land).

If you haven’t read the 24th chapter of Isaiah..might want to review it. Am NOT looking forward to a two state solution!!

      Vennoye,
I take it you don’t believe in the rapture (or snatching away) of the Church. Some man Jesus is, leaving his Bride to suffer the wrath of God together with the unrighteous! Why do we keep treating Jesus like a sissy? Yes, He‘s God but He’s also a MAN, for crying out loud, and He behaves like one. Christians who say Jesus will make us go through the Great Tribulation are as clueless about God’s character as those who claim God predetermines who goes to heaven and who perishes. Granted, the latter is more offensive to God because h*ll is horrific beyond words, but both teachings show a total disregard for the meaning of redemption. God does discipline us, but He never inflicts any measure of judgment on any of his children. The Great Tribulation will unleash his righteous wrath upon a wicked world, and it will get ugly beyond anything we can imagine. Isaiah 24 depicts said time. We are not appointed onto wrath. Jesus will come back for us and take us to be with Him. We will celebrate the marriage supper of the Lamb for seven years, following the Jewish tradition of his day (which was seven days).

In re Israel, there will be no two-state solution as long as East Jerusalem is part of the deal. Israel will never, ever, EVER give up an inch of the Holy City without a fight, and God is on their side, so it ain’t gonna happen.

Genesis 15:18-21 On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram and said, “To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates – the land of the Kenites, Kenizzites, Kadmonites, Hittites, Perizzites, Rephaites, Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites and Jebusites.”

Numbers 34:1-12 Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, “Command the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘When you come into the land of Canaan, this is the land that shall fall to you as an inheritance-the land of Canaan to its boundaries. Your southern border shall be from the Wilderness of Zin along the border of Edom; then your southern border shall extend eastward to the end of the Salt Sea; your border shall turn from the southern side of the Ascent of Akrabbim, continue to Zin, and be on the south of Kadesh Barnea; then it shall go on to Hazar Addar, and continue to Azmon; the border shall turn from Azmon to the Brook of Egypt, and it shall end at the Sea. As for the western border, you shall have the Great Sea for a border; this shall be your western border. And this shall be your northern border: From the Great Sea you shall mark out your border line to Mount Hor; from Mount Hor you shall mark out your border to the entrance of Hamath; then the direction of the border shall be toward Zedad; the border shall proceed to Ziphron, and it shall end at Hazar Enan. This shall be your northern border. You shall mark out your eastern border from Hazar Enan

This mess via Obama is just commensing.

If the president, Imam Obama, does not have the US veto this attempt to make these dysfunctional terrorists into a nation state before they have; a functional government or a way to support themselves, he will have started of WW III. This may indeed be his plan, just like

When you look at how the UN originally chopped up Zion/Palestine in 1948 – a piece here, a piece there…. it was like it was setup to fail from the get go…. why didn‘t they just slice it right up in half from the get go and the Jewish people would’ve given up a clean cut portion of their land to the land in 1948 and that would’ve been it. Instead when you look at the map you’ve got chunks of land that the Arab Palestinians hold and there is the chunks of land the Jewish Palestinians hold.
