Palin Aide Defends ‘Crosshairs’ Political Map that Targeted Giffords’ District in 2010

A spokeswoman for former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is decrying widespread “politicization” of Saturday’s shooting rampage in Arizona that has left Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., fighting for her life.

“This is a terrible politicization of a tragedy,” Palin aide Rebecca Mansour told USA TODAY.  “We don’t know (the shooter’s) motive.  It doesn’t seem like he was motivated by a political ideology.  Craziness is not an ideology,” she said.

In the hours since Saturday’s shooting, numerous media outlets and online bloggers have pegged Palin with accusations of inciting violence after the former vice president’s political action committee, SarahPAC, used what appeared to be rifle scope sights. Each “target” represented a House Democrat who voted for last year’s health care overhaul legislation who were from districts that Sen. John McCain carried in the 2008 presidential election.

Though Palin’s 2010 electoral map never put Giffords or any likeness of Giffords in the crosshairs, many were quick to make a connection.

After news of the shooting broke, Daily Kos founder Markos Moulitsas tweeted, “Mission accomplished, Sarah Palin,” with a link to another blogger’s rant about the electoral map targeting Giffords — all without a shred of evidence that the alleged shooter ever saw Palin’s electoral map, let alone interpreted it as some kind of twisted instruction.

A liberal blogger at FiredogLake also blamed Palin for Saturday’s shooting, suggesting Giffords was on Palin’s “hit list,“ and claiming her ”Don’t Retreat – Instead Reload” slogan is no longer a metaphor.

While such irresponsible assumptions may be expected from an amateur blogger, the blame game has also been playing out in the national mainstream media. As we noted, one CNN anchor claimed that Palin “allowed” the shooting to happen.  One New York Daily News reporter claimed that Palin had Gabrielle Giffords’ blood on her hands.

Sadly, many elected officials have done little try and stem the tide of wrongful backlash toward Palin.  Rep. Raul Grijalva, the Democratic representative from the district adjacent to Giffords’, remarked to the Huffington Post that Palin “need to look at her own behavior.”  ”

If she wants to help the public discourse,” Grijalva said, “the best thing she could do is to keep quiet.”

Sen. Dick Durbin, the second-ranking Democratic leader in the Senate also pointed the finger at Palin and her 2010 political map during an appearance on CNN’s State of the Union.

“These sorts of things, I think, invite the kind of toxic rhetoric that can lead unstable people to believe this is an acceptable response,” Durbin said.

But Sen. Lamar Alexander defended Palin against the accusations and condemned the media for trying to make the connection.

By Saturday evening, SarahPAC had deleted the image from its website after Palin extended her personal condolences to the shooting victims via her Facebook page.

“We had thought that ‘Take back the 20’ was taken down after the November election because it’s irrelevant now,” Mansour said. “And they called us this morning and said, ‘Do you want us to take this thing down?’ Because they realized instantly, you know.”

“And I think, you know, just reflectively without even thinking about any consequences, our PAC treasurer said, ‘Well it should have been down already. Why is it still up? We are not paying for that. It is not getting any traffic. It is no longer relevant.’ So it was taken down.”

“It was not trying to scrub anything. The original Facebook post where we had this graphic is still up. And I just want to clarify again, maybe it wasn’t done on the record enough by us when this graphic came out, the graphic is, we never, ever, ever intended it to be gun sights. It was simply crosshairs.”

Using militant rhetoric in politics is indeed nothing new and Palin is far from the first politician to utilize such imagery.  In 2008, then-Sen. Barack Obama told his supporters that if his opponents “bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun.“ Politicians from all ideologies are constantly talking about ”targeting” voters, yet no one would accuse them of wanting to shoot them.

Despite his apparent outrage over Palin’s rhetoric, Kos’ Moulitsas has previously urged his own readers to “target” Giffords and put a bullseye on her district because she “sold out the Constitution…”

Harry Mitchell, former head of the Arizona Democratic Party put his own 2006 Republican opponent, Rep. J.D. Hayworth, in the crosshairs in a televised campaign ad and the national party organization has previously used similar “targets” in their campaign rhetoric:

“The language of targeting a swing district has been used long before we used it,” Palin’s aide noted.  “We have no idea whether that person ever saw that graphic.”

While the media debates what role political rhetoric plays in driving someone to murder, Palin’s camp continues to deny any role in spurring violence.

“We never ever, ever intended it to be gun sights,” Mansour told talk radio host Tammy Bruce, noting that the graphic was contracted out and that Palin staffers approved it without much thought.  “It never occurred to us that anybody would consider it violent.” (click here for audio)

“We are all looking at our Twitter feeds and I am seeing people and it’s really sad,” Mansour said. “People actually accuse Gov. Palin of this. It’s appalling. Appalling. I cannot even express how disgusting that is.”

    This whole debate is going in a weird direction. I don‘t think many people are really suggesting that Sarah Palin’s election graphic or Obama’s “Untouchables” quote constitute a direct incitement to violence.

    There is a legitimate issue, here, though. Both sides have armies of pundits in the field, and both sides are guilty of using hyperbole to a degree that makes all civil discourse suspect. You all watch Glenn Beck — you know that his show is pretty apocalyptic — he takes it as a given that we’re headed toward a socialist dystopia. Look at the advertisers — any audience that’s a target market for seed sets and survival gear needs to take a deep breath.

    Don’t get me wrong — the left is almost as bad. We need to hold our media to a higher standard, and we need to start trusting each other again.

But there is another type that truly hate this country and everything it stands for. Control of the people is their endgame. This is not new. I have been watching them carefully for over 20 years. One… it just shows the disrepect he has for anyone who doesn’t agree with him, which is sad because he is suppose to represent us all, not talk down to those who disagree. I sat there and cried hearing Gretchen interview the slain 9-year old girls mother and on the left we got bloggers trying to throw blood on the right’s hands! This is ridiculous and I am so utterly embarrassed to be an American right now, not because of the idiot’s shooting spree but because of the way the LMS is covering this story. Other countries must be rolling on the floor laughing as they watch our media turn this tragedy into a platform for the left.

      Look this kid was clearly unhinged and a few sandwiches short of a picnic. FoxNews had an excellent interview with a shrink who explained this guys mental state. Probably one of the best diagnosis’s I have ever heard.

      What I am saying here is no different than what those on the fringe left are doing. Blaming Palin, Beck, Rush etc etc with NO proof to base this on. BUT the only difference btwn what they are doing and I have stated is they have “people” on their side in public venues calling for violence. Thus my constant attack today on various sites includ TheBlaze focusing on Van Jones, Frances Piven etc who have factually called for violence.

      I am calling for folks to blame them for this as its time to address this constant rhetoric of the left. They are experts on the blame game even though many times they have nothing to support it. Well now we have a shooter with questionable background who can be tied to the left (holes in this theory (for now) you pilot a aircraft carrier through) BUT its enough to finally go at them and hold ppl like Jones & Piven accountable.

      This is why I say the gloves are off. You have to play dirty guys trying to play this game with them fairly will do nothing but leave “you” on the sidelines with a bloody nose while they continue to bulldoze over everyone. Yea you may look good not stooping to their level but in the end you will have your ass handed to you…. at least you look good right!

      Relax everyone. “WhiteTeaParty” is not so unlike the accused in this recent shooting. Just reading the posts left by “WhiteTeaParty” you can see the similarities. My analysis would conclude that “WhiteTeaParty” is another one of these nut-jobs hanging on the edge.

      “WhiteTeaParty” NEVER has ANY facts and seems to follow the same MO of a follower of a cult whose leader is way off bubble.

      No I have compiled a list of dates and times where “WhiteTeaParty” has left comments and also the content of those comments. Based on the time of the comments here is what I might deduce.

      Age: Adolescent to 27.

      Education: Struggling or struggled through school to make low grades and was not considered popular by any means. Not athletic and never able to complete anything he/she starts. Afraid of FAILURE so tasks are left unfinished so he/she figures if task unfinished you can’t say that I failed.

      Employment: Not likely but if by chance holds a very menial low level job with no satisfaction and no chance for accomplished success or growth. Dead end job.

      Temperament: Quick to anger especially if you don‘t agree with and lets those that don’t agree eat at him/her for long periods of time.

      Relationship: Not a chance on this one. Very lonely.

      Home: Either lives in basement of parents house or a very low rent apartment with a same sex roommate. Seldom baths and nearly never does laundry. Just recycles cloths from the floor. Spends endless hours doing nothing productive at the computer or game console and usually is wearing only dirty socks, soiled underwear and a shabby out of date T-shirt. The clothing matches the lack of personal hygiene perfectly.

      So, everyone.. either ignore the mentally challenged buffoon or have some fun with him/her. We all need someone to feel sorry for.

      This was a horrible tragedy and my thoughts and prayers are with the victims and all of their friends and family, but I am afraid that we will see an attempt to use this as an excuse to pass new gun laws and strip more Americans of their second amendment rights. The left will obviously cast the blame on all of the right and accuse all Tea Party “members” of being violent loons who are on the verge of snapping. It will be interesting to watch how and if the conservative movement will react.

      GUNS don’t kill. People do. And this loser was background checked by the FBI and okay-ed for a gun permit. I think the gun was innocent and those that failed the system are guilty.

      Here we go again… The left will now seize upon this tragedy and call for an assault on our freedoms; speech, guns, assembly. They will say that it is because of Glenn Beck or Palin and deny the recent statements by Piven, Van Jones and the like, despicable.

      While we mourn the dead and call for the ultimate punishment for the perpetrator we must not retreat and become silenced by the left as they try to assign guilt to us. We are God fearing peace loving Patriots who despise this kind of violence unlike the left who secretly loves this stuff as an excuse to take away more of our freedom.

      It is ironic that idiots like this guy feel powerless when the government will not do it’s job and they decide to take matters into their own hands. This man was deranged and is not one of us or a conservative. He said he was against immigration and the governments failure to do any thing about it. When justice is not served and laws are ignored and enforced as the government sees fit the result is just this, ANARCHY!

      This is the push that left has been waiting for, don‘t take the bait but don’t back down from what we know to be right!

      This happened because of the invasion of illegals. Arizona’s – and the feds’ – lack of diligence regarding the border allowed this psychotic creep to walk around loose because so many resources were going to illegals. A decade or two ago, Loughner would have been hospitalized for his own protection.
