Palin: America Out of Step With Reagan’s Values

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) – America is on a “road to ruin” because of misguided policies in Washington and needs to get back in step with the values of Ronald Reagan, Sarah Palin said at an event honoring the former president’s legacy.
The 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee delivered a stinging critique of Washington during her speech Friday, part of the national celebration marking the centennial of Reagan’s birth on Feb. 6.
Revisiting themes familiar from her 2008 campaign, she said the nation was being shackled by high debt and taxes, dense government regulation and rising spending, often for programs that don’t work. She said a rush toward green energy was overlooking the nation’s oil and natural gas reserves, a choice that will cost jobs and drive up pump prices.
She blamed Washington leaders—an apparent reference to the Obama administration—for doing “everything in their power to stymie responsible domestic drilling.”
“This is dangerous. This is insane,” she said. “This is not the road to national greatness, it is the road to ruin.”
She alluded to President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address last month, saying it amounted to a statement that “the era of big government is here to stay.”
Palin was asked to talk about Reagan’s 1964 speech, “A Time for Choosing,” which he gave on behalf of then-Republican presidential candidate Barry Goldwater. In it, he talks at length about the dangers of high taxes and encroaching big government, as well as the necessity of strong national security.
She said the stark choices the nation faces are not unlike those Reagan talked of in the 1960s, only the economy of today is worse, from home foreclosures to high unemployment.
She said Reagan saw the danger of President Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society programs, and “he refused to sit down and be silent as our liberties were eroded by an out of control, centralized government that overtaxed and overreached in utter disregard of constitutional limits.”
“We could choose one direction or the other, socialism or freedom and free markets,” Palin said.
Palin received a roaring ovation, but Reagan‘s son told The Associated Press in an interview that he doesn’t see anything in common between his dad and the former Alaska governor, who was invited to speak by the event’s sponsor, the conservative Young America’s Foundation.
“Sarah Palin is a soap opera, basically. She’s doing mostly what she does to make money and keep her name in the news,” Reagan says.
“She is not a serious candidate for president and never has been,” said Reagan, a political independent whose politics lean left.
But former Reagan speechwriter Kenneth Khachigian praised the choice of Palin to discuss Reagan’s legacy.
Palin was a teenager when Reagan took office in 1981 and like many young people “their lives and philosophy and political fortunes were shaped by the Reagan era,” Khachigian says. “She can reflect on that as well as anyone could.”
Palin was introduced to the nation at the Republican National Convention in 2008, and her folksy, wisecracking style sometimes earned her comparisons to Reagan, who was known for his wit and appeal beyond the traditional Republican base, especially with blue-collar Democrats. She frequently referred to Reagan on the campaign trail, and in her debate with Vice President Joe Biden reprised Reagan’s famous rejoinder from his 1980 debate with Jimmy Carter, “There you go again.”
But Palin, now closely aligned with the tea party movement, has become for some a polarizing political figure.
Tea partiers rail against soaring public debt and sprawling government programs like Social Security and Medicare. But public debt roughly tripled on Reagan’s watch and he did not attempt to dismantle Social Security or Medicare during his term, says Reagan biographer Lou Cannon.
“He was no tea partier,” Cannon says.
The Young America’s Foundation was founded in the 1960s to promote conservative ideas on college campuses, and it purchased Reagan’s former ranch in 1998. The foundation is not connected with the Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley.

And of course the misinformed voters who love you and buy your books. But Sarah, you’re doing extremely well under Obama. Perhaps you’re even secretly rooting for him to win in 2012 so that you can make even more money by continuing to talk about how America is going to ruin.

Posted on February 5, 2011 at 11:29amOk…it has been LONG enough….this RANT needs to happen!!!
Report Post »I apologize if this rambles but all of these thoughts have been banging around in my head for some time now.
First off the facts: I am NOT a lefty troll. I am a 40yr. old male that lives in Minnesota and have been a conservative for as long as I can remember. Like many I assume my Shock & Awe came about when Palin was announced as the V.P. candidate, at first I thought WOW!!! bold move. (Well actually my first thought was “who the hell is this?”) But as things moved along I realized that this was a completely contrived political “Hail Mary” move on the part of the GOP. The could read the writing on the wall & knew they were going to get smacked down in the election, so they did something that MAY have given the smallest glimmer of hope for 2008. BUT more importantly was setting up the coming elections for the next several cycles.
This site is called the Blaze because the “fire” of the truth is supposed to survive. So I would like to know if the people on here REALLY believe that Palin would be or should be President??? If so, please explain. This is a person who was hand picked from obscurity and ELEVATED by a political party that is STILL run by the people we like to call RHINO’s. Why??? Does anyone actually think the powers that be believe this woman is capable of running a country??? Because after all that is what is implied if you are chosen to be V.P. Not only in terms of immediate succession but as the defacto candidate AFTER your guy has had 2 terms in office.
Now I don’t have anything against Sarah Palin personally, she seems like a very nice lady, good wife & loving mother. BUT, this is NOT the person who should even be in the conversation for President. And if you think she should be then ask yourself “did I think that 4 yrs. ago? NO and why not? Because you had NO IDEA who she was. Palin has been gift wrapped. Teed up and smacked down the fairway as the beacon for all the conservatives to rally around. My gut feeling is she will drive the GOP to the Right (and that is fine) but at some point she will do/or say something that they will HAVE to distance themselves from and she will be dismissed just like the class troublemaker.
Many of my conservative friends like her & Bachmann for the same reason. “She speaks her mind” “She is a Rogue…blah blah blah. My response is not to contradict WHAT she or they (Palin/Bachmann) say….BUT how they say it. Make no mistake these ladies are PURE politicians…just watch HOW they answer simple questions. Like “what would you do to help the economy??“ The response is ALWAYS something like ”well what I wouldn’t do is follow along the same path as the Obama administration”. The classic “Politician Pivot” and then they expound for several minutes on how bad the “other” guy is…WITHOUT ACTUALLY ANSWERING THE QUESTION!!
If you doubt me just watch or listen to them in interviews.
I have much more to say on this, but would love some opinions from others to see if my litmus test stands up…please feel free to comment.

Posted on February 5, 2011 at 11:46amI grew up in a family heavily involved in politics, very conservative. And I can tell you her track record is a hell alot more immpressive than anyother person, Dem or Rep. Facts: She has fought her own party to make things right for Alaska, she has experience in the oil/gas industry and knows what we need to do to become more independant. Any good potential candidate surround themselves with good people who can help fill the the gaps of where they do not have the “so called” experience you are looking for. Fact: Sarah has vast more experience than our current dicator, I mean President. So we can stop the whole experience issue, in my opinion.
People complain all the time they are tired of the status quo of the normal politician. Yet when someone as fresh and honest as Sarah comes along you still are not happy. Why? Yes she may not give an entire break down of what she would do, but who does? And honestly you can’t give the exact details in an interview of what your going to do. There is information you do not have, if you are not the President or V.P. How can you lay out a complete detailed plan if you don’t have all the sensative information that the President/V.P. are privy too? You can’t!
I really like Sarah, she has guts and will not be beholden to special interest groups or lobbiests. She is in it to do the right thing for the American people based on our countries values that made this country so great to begin with. All you have to do is look at her track record to know what kind of leader she would be. And the current Republicans need to stop being “middle of the road” on issues. I am sick and tired of them trying to win the middle by bypassing our countries values to only get some votes. A real conservative knows this.

Posted on February 5, 2011 at 11:58amSarah Palin is the perfect match for someone who would follow after Ronald Reagan’s own heart. But the obstacles that Palin has to overcome are Staggering even when comparing the simple politics or the situation. The republican Party is fractured in ways now that Reagan never dreamed of and the left is stronger now than when Reagan began his assualt on the Presidency. The organized conservative movement over the last 15-20 years dropped the ball like a bunch of seriously braindead Homer Simpsons! Power greed and corruption seemed to win at every turn. I agree with most of what you write,…except the fact that she and Bachman are pure politicians. I do think her expectations for this country are sincere. She is a true spokeswoman for less government and “We The People.”
I do not know how you derive your income, but my livelihood is generated from a small business that I operate and manage to keep 7 employees. I pay a TON of taxes. IT IS MY MONEY. NOT income for those (like many members of Congress) who have never had to make a weekly payroll, Sarah clearly drives this message home. That message means a great deal to me.
Perhaps it is the message of Sarah we should note, not the person.

Posted on February 5, 2011 at 12:32pmI think Sarah Palin has a different calling than being president. Something more important, she has made mistakes but who hasn’t? She has also been dead on. Both of these things come from calling it as she sees it. The McCain campaign held her back in 2008. They tried to keep her withion some cookie cutter image the campaign team had laid out for her. If they had let her go her image wouldn’t have been made into what it was. She‘s blunt and she was trying to censor herself to accomodate McCain’s campaign. I think the McCain campaign owed it to the American people to show them EXACTLY who Barack Obama was, but they tip toed around that because they were afraid of the fact that he was black and they didn’t want to be accused of racism. Sarah Palin wanted to treat him just like any other candidate, and there was the break down. They told her to keep it all gum drops and lollipops, the media would only have gum drops and lollipops when it came to Barry and the American people are now suffering the results of the giant con job that was the 2008 elections.
Tell me this, is there a single thing that Sarah Palin could possibly have done worse as president than Barack Obama? And doesn’t he sound like such a genious with all of his “uuuhhhhh, ummmmm, uhhhh, let me be clear”‘s? This man CLEARLY has no respect for the office of the presidency or the American people. He missed the wreath laying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier so he could go see Paul McCartney. The President of the United States just should NOT do such things. 60‘s pop icons don’t dictate our President’s schedule, and I don’t want my president to be “One of the Guys”.
Like I said, Mrs. Palin has made mistakes, but I don’t think she would have made me ashamed of my own president the way this treasonous clown has, and I don‘t think she would have sold out the Brit’s to the RUSSIANS or honored the murderous Chinese dictator with a State dinner.
If nothing else, my core beliefs and values are much more in tune with Mrs. Palin’s than Mr. Obama’s. She can be irritating, but he scares the living heck out of me.

Liberals look for anything to be able to call the Right into question, and make that thing relevant to the matter at hand. It’s their way, since they can’t really discuss an issue without bombing out. The cutest thing about them, when they say something like, “Well, Nixon did________”, is that they actually think they or their guy is somehow vindicated and off the hook.
Chrissy Matthews can say the most outrageous racist thing, but because Lincoln freed the slaves in 1863 instead of 1862, Lincoln is the racist and Chrissy is off the hook like he never spoke. Implied, a liberal adds a ‘so there!’.
There is something seriously wrong with liberals, as evidenced by their posts here. I don’t know about you, but I get a big kick out of it. I mean, circus clowns are intentionally funny. Liberals, thinking themselves serious arbiters and judges of all that’s sacrosanct, are a laugh riot and don’t even know how comical they are. My fave kind of humor is the ironic, unintentional kind.

My comment has nothing to do with my political view, I’m what you down in the States call an independent. My attitude would be the same if this were done on a liberal site. It’s the ethics and honor that come into question when someone is seen copy and pasting word for word someone elses article under their own name with no credit given.

It would be, if it weren’t part of every other word copy and pasted from the original article. Every time in newspapers and the likes, they not only credit files from the AP, but also share the byline with the original author. NOw, without looking up the original post, can you tell me who wrote the article? Hint: The answer isn’t Scott Baker.

Sarah Pallin has more in common with Reagan than his own son. Yet Ron Jr. has the stupidity to speak of it in public; therein proving the saying of it is best to remain quiet and thought a fool, versus opening his mouth and removing all doubt.
I don’t listen to Levin, Hannity, Beck or Limbaugh……don’t need to. I’ve been listening to 92.1 here in Madison, WI to hear what it is the other side is talking about and how they think……unbelievable intellectual corruption/bankruptcy!! The scary part is they actually believe what it is they are saying!
RJ was speaking about how at one point in time the country was “flourishing” with a 90% tax bracket. The country was doing great DESPITE the 90% tax rate…….not because of it!!! With the strained economy we have at the moment, try that $#i! now and see what a 90% tax rate will do for us…..dumba$$!!

So to blame America’s longest and best expansion over a 20 year period on Reagan, go ahead. Reagan built a strong military, CUT taxes and regulation, and we had a huge economic expansion, you should know that?? Perot was also correct, ‘do you hear that giant sucking sound’, yet????? Free trade agreements and higher taxes have sent jobs overseas, all born of a nobel liberal agenda…well thanks for that, the country is now in shambles. Muchas gracias!

Eureka College is in Illinois. (June 25, 2010)
===============
More priceless jewels from Sarah:
Katie Couric: “What other Supreme Court decisions do you disagree with?”
Sarah Palin: “Well, let’s see. There’s –of course –in the great history of America rulings there have been rulings, there’s never going to be absolute consensus by every American. And there are — those issues, again, like Roe v Wade where I believe are best held on a state level and addressed there. So you know — going through the history of America, there would be others but–”
Couric: “Can you think of any?”
Palin: “Well, I could think of — of any again, that could be best dealt with on a more local level. Maybe I would take issue with. But you know, as mayor, and then as governor and even as a Vice President, if I’m so privileged to serve, wouldn’t be in a position of changing those things but in supporting the law of the land as it reads today.” –unable to name any Supreme Court decisions other than Roe v. Wade, CBS News interview, Oct. 1, 2008
“Well, it certainly does because our — our next door neighbors are foreign countries. They’re in the state that I am the executive of. And there in Russia …
We have trade missions back and forth. We– we do– it’s very important when you consider even national security issues with Russia as Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where– where do they go? It’s Alaska. It’s just right over the border.
It is– from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right there. They are right next to– to our state.” –Sarah Palin, asked by Katie Couric how Alaska’s proximity to Russia gives her foreign policy experience, CBS News interview, Sept. 24, 2008

If you don’t trust the media, then you can‘t trust their choices for what is and isn’t news. There is an agenda in play. then the Republicans came a along, and after the Reagan and Bush #1 12-year era the Debt climbed
to 65 % of GDP,
Clinton, after 8 yrs brought it back down to around 50 %
then Bushy # 2 brought it back up to 80 % !!! and now we are at 90 %

And your source for that piece of brilliance is_____________?
Grammar lesson:
The correct verb is WERE. “If Sarah Palin’s brain WERE (but it is not) gasoline, ….”
Another example: If it WERE raining (but it is not), the dirt roads would be muddy.
On the other hand:
If Sarah Palin was born in Idaho, she would have her birth certificate registered there. (She was born there, and she does.)
Whose brain wouldn’t be enough to fuel as minibike around a BB? Careful — it might come back to bite you.
